00:00Remember to kick off your mornings with News 5's Good Morning Cleveland.
00:03Tiffany Tarpley, Mike Brookbank, and meteorologist Trent McGill have more of everything you need.
00:08More local news, consumer news, traffic, and power of five weather.
00:11So you're all set for the day ahead.
00:14Browns get a short field goal from Dustin Hopkins to take a 10-0 lead.
00:18That scoring drive is presented by Howard Hanna.
00:20Win big with Howard Hanna, the official real estate provider of the Cleveland Browns.
00:24Mixed bag for Dylan Gabriel in his first drive, just 3 of 8 for 43 yards.
00:30Hopkins to boot it away.
00:33Schrader will take it.
00:34There's a flag down.
00:36He's going to get past the 30, the 35, and wrapped up there.
00:40Demonte Casey, Christopher Edmonds in on the stop.
00:50Not a ton of flags here in the first half.
00:55Illegal formation.
00:58Receiving team number 45.
01:00That five-yard penalty, as it says from the end of the play, it's first down.
01:05All right, time right now to check in with Aditi Kinkabwala, with a man who's started the game and is done for the day.
01:11We are indeed here with Joe Flacco, who's done for the day.
01:13But for the first time in seven months, live action.
01:17How did it feel?
01:17Yeah, it's—I can say, like, it's good that we did that because you get through some of the little stuff that you just, you know, you have to get through when you go back out on the field for the first time with live action.
01:31So I'm glad that we were able to get out there and get some plays under our belt today.
01:34Nine for ten in completions.
01:36The one in completion went to the guy who's supposed to be your number one receiver to six different pass catchers.
01:42What's the confidence to be gleaned from that?
01:44Well, yeah, I don't—listen, I don't think it was anything perfect.
01:47But, you know, to just get little completions, get the ball in guys' hands, and then just see what they can do with it.
01:52I mean, you saw a little bit of that in the third down that I hit our back out of the backfield with.
01:58And he made a couple guys miss.
01:59And, you know, that's what this game's all about, getting in your playmaker's hands and letting them go win the game for you.
02:05We see the way that you're walking around talking to the offensive linemen.
02:09Now that it's officially your team, what's the difference?
02:12You know, it's going to be tough for me to admit there's much of a difference.
02:18You know, I think I kind of am who I am, and I'm able to be that, you know, even without that title.
02:26But I think as far as the team's concerned, it's always good to have a guy that you can look at
02:31and know that he's going to be the guy that's under center for you.
02:33And I think it's just a good way to give everybody confidence going into the season.
02:37Like I said, I'm going to be that same person no matter what.
02:40But, yeah, it feels good to be able to look at the guys in the eye now knowing that I'm going to be out there with them on Sunday.
02:46The conversation surrounding this team, of course, is the makeup of the quarterback room
02:51and how deep it will actually go.
02:54This many years in, how much do you think about what sort of support you'd like in that room?
02:59You know, it's funny.
03:00I think I probably take for granted what that room is all about because I've been part of a QB room for so long.
03:07But it's a special place.
03:08You know, it's one of the toughest positions to play in sports.
03:11So to have a room that you can kind of all go in and feel good about and, you know,
03:15kind of bounce things off of each other and also just have good laughs and have good relationships with is important.
03:21And I probably do take that for granted a little bit.
03:23Listen, we've got a good room, you know.
03:25We've got a lot of guys that like to have fun and a lot of guys that are learning football.
03:28You know, they're young and they're anxious to learn.
03:31And it makes for a good environment and it keeps me, you know, on my toes.
03:34And, you know, I'm loving every bit of it.
03:37Keeps you young, too.
03:38Of course.
03:39You know, hanging around these guys at least gives me the illusion that I'm still a young guy.
03:43So.
03:44Last one.
03:46Do you think that your children enjoyed this performance?
03:51I'll be interested to see how much of it they watched or if they're swimming or doing something like that.
03:56They enjoyed it.
03:58I don't know if they're going to tell me that, but they enjoyed it.
03:59They're enjoying every bit of this.
04:01And honestly, like, they're a big, them enjoying it the way they are is one of the big reasons why I'm still able to do this and have so much fun with it.
04:12They make it that much more special, so.
04:14Well, hopefully Daniel believes you are indeed the starter.
04:16That's right.
04:17We appreciate it.
04:18Thanks so much.
04:19Best of luck this week.
04:20Appreciate it.
04:21Joe, you're allowed to run home and tell your kids you are indeed the starter.
04:24Whether they believe you or don't want to believe you, you are the week one starter.
04:27Sounds like they're going to have to find him at the swimming pool, though.
04:30Yeah, I know, right?
04:30They're not going to be glued to the TV, apparently.
04:33A couple of big pass plays to their second-round pick.
04:36Terrence Ferguson have gotten the Rams in the red zone for the first time today.
04:40In fact, they hadn't run a play in Cleveland territory until this drive.
04:46Dresser win.
04:48Looking plenty of time.
04:50He's got space along the left side.
04:52Rolls, throws, completes.
04:55That is a nice catch there by Drake Stoops.
04:59Stoops gets it down close to the goal line inside the two.
05:04Browns in man coverage in the back end, forcing Rams quarterback to have to scramble around
05:10because he's got a good protection, but nobody to go to.
05:12And then with a great toe tap down the sideline, Stoops is able to catch that ball with Tony
05:18Brown.
05:18Just too much time in coverage for those guys to have to hang on.
05:21Got to get some pressure from your defensive line.
05:23Good job by DeMonte KZ to Submarine Schrader before he can get in for the score.
05:29Rams are on the move.
05:30Down 10-0 at the two-minute warning.
05:35Mike Hammond's studio with this game break.
05:37It's brought to you by Best Buy.
05:39What's going on right now?
05:40It's the Broncos and the Saints.
05:43I've got to tell you what, man.
05:44Bo Nix, this dude can deal.
05:45Courtland Sutton for the touchdown.
05:47Bo, 10 of 14 passing.
05:49110 yards.
05:50What a catch.
05:51That is a great catch.
05:53Good timing there.
05:54Let's not forget, we've got four games for you here on NFL Network.
05:57We're almost at halfway point in the first one.
05:59Seahawks and Packers at 4 Eastern.
06:01Jags and Dolphins at 7.
06:03And then it's the Raiders and Cardinals closing things out at 10 p.m. Eastern time.
06:07Steve Weich, David Carr will be joining me coming up at the half.
06:10We'll get their assessment on the quarterbacks that rocked that Cleveland Browns uniform.
06:14What they saw from Phil Placco.
06:15What we expect to see from Sanders.
06:17And, of course, we're taking a look at Dylan Gabriel.
06:20Get you back out.
06:21It's a game action.
06:26Sure, D is around here as well.
06:28Executive Vice President of the Cleveland Browns, J.W. Johnson.
06:31Checking out the Browns.
06:34Defense trying to stiffen here on second and goal.
06:38Schrader in the backfield.
06:39Play fake to him.
06:40Win.
06:41Throws.
06:43Touchdown.
06:43Stoops.
06:44And somewhere, Papa Bob, the former Oklahoma Sooners coach, is celebrating his son's touchdown.
06:54Rams do a good job.
06:55They're faking the jet sweep in one direction.
06:59All the blocking goes in the same direction.
07:01And then you boot out.
07:02And a lot of times on the backside, you get Stoops.
07:05You get those backside receivers acting like they're blocking down.
07:08And then the secondary for the Browns just lose track of who they have to be covering because they're thinking about their run fits.
07:14They're seeing that eye disguise going in the other direction with the jet sweep motion.
07:17And then completely leaving Stoops open in the end zone.
07:20Joshua Carty on to connect the PAT.
07:25And the Rams have their first points.
07:27They're down 10-7.
07:29Dylan Gabriel.
07:30Good news is you get to run a two-minute drive in your first home game with a three-point lead.
07:37Excited to watch Dylan Gabriel here with some live action two-minute drills.
07:41See how he can operate.
07:42See how he handles the pressure.
07:44Ball's going to be taken.
07:45It's a wobbly one.
07:46Carter's going to pick it up at the five.
07:48He doesn't even make it to the 15 before he gets wrapped up.
07:54I'd like to take a moment to welcome our broadcast affiliates today presented by Ken Ganley Kia.
07:59I want to see you in a Ken Ganley Kia.
08:01All our great Ohio affiliates.
08:03Also our friends watching on NFL Network nationally.
08:06And our newest affiliate all the way in Honolulu, Hawaii to check out one of their favorites.
08:10Dylan Gabriel.
08:11Yeah, the people at KGMB.
08:13They got up at 7 a.m. for kickoff today.
08:16Aloha.
08:18Hopefully enjoying some banana macadamia nut pancakes as they're enjoying their boy, Dylan Gabriel, out here in the two-minute drill.
08:26Browns with a couple of timeouts.
08:29Trevion Williams into the game in the backfield.
08:36Gabriel to throw.
08:38Looks, throws, completes.
08:41First down.
08:42That is Gage Larva Dan with the clock running.
08:45Aditi?
08:45Chris, two not ideal updates.
08:47Tight end Blake Whitehart is out with a knee.
08:50And Pierre Strong is being evaluated for a concussion right now.
08:54All right.
08:55Thank you so much.
08:56Browns have had to deal with their share of injuries all preseason long.
09:00Another connection, that to Deontay Johnson for the first time.
09:04The veteran trying to make it at the back end of the roster.
09:09Today's player to watch, though, presented by Tostitos.
09:12Tostitos team bags are backscanned the QR code to win an epic Browns game day experience.
09:16It's the undrafted rookie free agent out of South Carolina, Gage Larva Dan, who's been great this camp.
09:21Yeah, Gage has had a great camp, trying to find a spot on the roster for him.
09:26But with potentially keeping four quarterbacks, it would be tough to keep six receivers.
09:30But he's one of those guys, he's done such a great job, you almost have to find a spot for him.
09:34Gabriel throws.
09:35Ooh, another dangerous pass.
09:40Incomplete.
09:40He was looking for Larva Dan.
09:43Gabriel going back to that sideline with a quick out being run by Gage Larva Dan.
09:48And you've got to be careful going back to the well two times in a row because those cornerbacks,
09:53they're on defense, so they're not as smart as this offensive guys.
09:56But even those guys, every now and then, they can figure things out and have an opportunity
10:00to maybe jump the play and make a game-changing play for the Rams in two minutes.
10:07Whistles.
10:09And a timeout by the Rams.
10:12Charge timeout.
10:13Los Angeles.
10:15Their second will be 30 seconds.
10:17So we expect to see Dylan Gabriel play into the second half, and then Shadur Sanders will
10:23make his home debut.
10:25And that is going to be very interesting because Shadur Sanders, boy, he has had a ton of fans,
10:31a groundswell of support ever since, really, his days at Jackson State.
10:36It followed him to Colorado and then through the draft process, which was a wild rollercoaster
10:41of emotions.
10:42I've got to say, this kid has handled himself extremely well since he has come to Cleveland.
10:46But he has handled himself really well.
10:49What a tough situation.
10:50Thinking that you're going to be one of the top picks in the draft and then sliding all
10:54the way to the fifth round.
10:55I think even people that didn't love him coming out didn't expect that to happen.
10:58But he's handled it with grace.
11:00He's done a great job handling the competition with Dylan Gabriel, doing and saying all the
11:04right things, and then playing great in his first opportunity a couple weeks ago.
11:08Gabriel across the middle, connects, gets the ball into Rams territory as Larvadan with
11:13a nice connection.
11:15Gets it down to the Rams, 47 clock running.
11:18Cleveland still with two timeouts.
11:20Gabriel throws, thrash, first down again.
11:31Dylan Gabriel doing a great job with quick decisions, throwing the ball accurately, but
11:35he's got to be careful.
11:36He's throwing a lot of outbreaking routes right now.
11:38And you've got to watch for a trap corner where it looks like the guy you're looking at
11:42might be playing man coverage where he can fit it in, but then they fall off with the
11:46outside corner and make a jump on those routes.
11:50Gabriel first and 10, dumps it down.
11:52Treveon Williams gets it to the 30, and the Browns utilize their second timeout.
11:57Dylan Gabriel listening to our broadcast, understanding he can't keep picking apart with the quick
12:02outs and throwing it to his running back there, which puts him in field goal range and gives
12:06him an opportunity.
12:07Cleveland their second.
12:09Well, everybody's smarter when they listen to you.
12:11Well, I don't know about that, but certainly in that moment he was using his big brain.
12:14So, when they go over that in field, is that something where they say, hey, you can get
12:20away with that on 1 o'clock on a Saturday against a bunch of guys at the back end of
12:25the roster, but that will not work on Sunday?
12:27Whether it's practice field in Berea or Philadelphia or out here on game day, like, every rep you
12:32take is a learning experience, even if it's a great rep, because in that situation they're
12:36like, hey, great throw, we love the decision making, but now here's the next level, the graduate
12:41level of thinking you need to be ready for.
12:42It's like, hey, they're going to adjust on defense.
12:44They're not just going to sit in the same coverage.
12:46They're going to look and see what your tendencies are throughout that drive, and then all of
12:49a sudden the guys up in the box are going to say, hey, let's run this coverage, because
12:53that can take advantage of what the quarterback is doing and what he's looking for with his
12:57first read.
12:58And so, just being nimble at that quarterback position is something you're learning as a
13:02rookie.
13:03Gabriel, a ton of experience.
13:05An FBS record.
13:0663 starts across three different schools.
13:08Gabriel throws wide open.
13:13Sal Cannella for the first time inside the 25.
13:19Cannella, a first-year man out of Auburn.
13:22He's done some nice things in the preseason games.
13:26Yeah, Cannella's done a really nice job there.
13:28We got Gage Larvanan as the wide receiver out wide there, of course.
13:32That's what they call him, the wide receiver.
13:33And just throwing a nice little pick for Sal Cannella, being able to run towards the sideline.
13:39Well, when I said it, I realized how silly it sounds, but that's why they call it the
13:42wide receiver.
13:44But it's a twins, a two-by-two formation, and Dylan Gabriel picking a side, going to
13:48it quickly, being really decisive in the two-minute drill.
13:51First to ten, Gabriel over Larvanan.
13:55And that is one of those balls that is dangerous for the receiver.
13:58Tanner Engel got a shot on the undrafted rookie.
14:03We've seen a few of those sail on Gabriel.
14:05Yeah, that was one that he's going to want back.
14:07He starts to his right, comes back, and I couldn't tell if the ball got tipped at the
14:11line of scrimmage a little bit.
14:12That's why it floated kind of high, because that's a dangerous throw.
14:15I think, from an offensive standpoint, I like kind of taking a little bit deeper of a
14:19shot towards that middle hash mark part of the field.
14:23But when it gets tipped, it leaves your receiver in a vulnerable position.
14:28Second and ten.
14:32Brown still with one more timeout to go.
14:35They're going to set up a screen.
14:36He's got blockers in front of him.
14:38It gets down to the 20, and the Browns will have to use their last timeout as Trevion Williams
14:43was stopped.
14:45Actually, nice job.
14:46It looked like the waters were going to part for him, and then quickly swallowed up by
14:50the Rams' defense.
14:52Yeah, Zach Zinter's out there leading the parade, and it looked like he didn't really know
14:56if he should block the corner and block out, or turn back inside and block the safety.
15:00But what they tell the first man out in a screen like that is, pick somebody and be decisive
15:05and go block them.
15:07Because if you're kind of pitter-pattering between two guys and you're not decisive, the
15:10running back doesn't know who the guy is that he owns in that situation.
15:13So he's waiting to play off of your block.
15:16You don't make a decisive decision and take somebody, and then all of a sudden the guy
15:19you weren't really paying attention to because you were thinking you were going to get outside
15:22takes out your legs.
15:23You should teach a screen class in Madison.
15:26Screen blocking 101.
15:28Screen you.
15:29The Browns are in the red zone presented by Milkbone.
15:32Milkbone bringing more dog to the dog pound.
15:35And the Rams will burn their final timeout.
15:40Los Angeles.
15:41They're third and final.
15:42They got scared, I could tell.
15:43All right, I know it's only preseason, but I'll let you throw in your offensive coordinator
15:47cap here in terms of what you're trying to do.
15:50Why not?
15:50Let's have a little fun with it.
15:52Well, what I'm trying to do here is thinking that I want to see Phil and Gabriel play out
15:56this drive.
15:57And so you've got an opportunity where the Rams are thinking we've got to protect the sticks.
16:02It's third down.
16:03If we can stop them here, we're going to force a field goal.
16:06Where if I'm the Browns, I'm going, hey, we got the whole field available.
16:09We can throw it for two or three yards.
16:11Try to gain a yard or two.
16:12Yards after catch.
16:13And then be ready for that quick situation where before you let the Rams substitute or
16:17get to a different defense, you get on the line of scrimmage and you run a quick quarterback
16:21sneaker.
16:21You run another play before they have a chance to get ready.
16:24All right, third and seven.
16:26No timeouts for either side.
16:28Gabriel, seven of nine for 67 yards on this drive.
16:33Gabriel looks left, throws, Thrash connects for the first down inside the five.
16:42Beautiful ball placement and a great job by Thrash to hang on it even after Cam Lampkin lit
16:49him up.
16:49Great job here by Dylan Gabriel, just layering that throw over that first level of the defense,
16:55but getting it down before the receiver gets hit right at the goal line there.
17:01Thrash doing a great job bringing it in, getting those feet inbounds and giving the Browns an
17:06opportunity here inside the five-yard line.
17:08Browns have first and goal at the three.
17:13Williams remains in the backfield.
17:15Gage Larvedan back in the game.
17:18Gabriel looks, throws, right up and Larvedan touchdown!
17:22Gage Larvedan all by himself in the end zone.
17:34Dylan Gabriel going through his progression, finds his man wide open and makes the easy
17:40look easy and routine.
17:42Great job by Dylan Gabriel.
17:43Still a couple misfires during that drive, but he stuck with it.
17:47He continued to read the defense and trust in his arm and trust in what his eyes are showing
17:52him and finds Gage Larvedan in the corner of the end zone for a big touchdown there for
17:56the Browns and for Dylan Gabriel to finish that drive the right way.
18:02Dustin Hopkins.
18:03And he pulls the PAT.
18:10And so the Browns will have to settle for six instead of seven on that drive and a nine-point
18:15lead.
18:21All right, that is our Howard Hanna scoring drive.
18:25Win big with Howard Hanna, the official real estate provider of the Cleveland Browns.
18:29An impressive 11-play, 86-yard drive in a minute 38.
18:34Gabriel, nine of 11 for all 86 yards, and it wraps up with a three-yard touchdown toss
18:40to a wide-open Larvedan.
18:42Yeah, great decision-making, great patience back there.
18:45That's one of the things that rookies do have to learn is you've got plenty of time, right?
18:49The clock stops when the ball goes out of bounds.
18:52You've got plenty of timeouts.
18:53You don't have to be in a rush.
18:54You don't have to be panicked.
18:55You can take what the defense gives you because you've got plenty of time to get down the
18:59field and give yourself an opportunity to score a touchdown just like they did right
19:03there.
19:04And so taking a lot of nice, easy throws to guys that were open, distributing the football
19:08to multiple players, finding little windows as the coverage is getting changed from one
19:13play to the next.
19:14Really nice drive there by Tony Gabriel.
19:15Ball sails into the end zone, and you've got to imagine the Rams will probably take a
19:24knee with no more timeouts.
19:27So Gage Larvedan, you know, he was just excited to be on the same field with Joe Flacco in practice.
19:32Earlier this year, he tweeted out he caught a TV from Mr. Joe Flacco, so life is complete.
19:37Not quite.
19:39Not quite.
19:40You get to score a touchdown like that in the preseason, whether it's from Joe Flacco
19:44or a fellow rookie at Gabriel, it doesn't matter, man.
19:48You love seeing those rookies showing the vets respect and showing excitement, right?
19:53Because, I mean, everybody that's watching at home, these guys are living our dream.
19:56I mean, even though I did get to play, I still get jealous of what these guys get to do out
20:01here, play in front of a huge crowd.
20:03Maybe not huge today, but on a normal situation, but it's just such an honor to be able to go
20:09wear the orange and brown at the NFL Shield and go out and play a kid's game for a King's
20:14Ransom.
20:14That's what we always said, and it's fun to see that joy from these guys.
20:18So Joe Flacco and the first stringers, they got on the board early on.
20:22Dylan Gabriel in the backups, a couple of...
20:24And half action.
20:25Well, Shador Sanders does have his helmet on.
20:27Dylan Gabriel does not.
20:31I'm no detective.
20:32Oh, but I think that means that perhaps Shador is about to enter the game.
20:36I thought you were going to say, but I play one on TV?
20:38No, I definitely don't.
20:39You play a lot of roles.
20:40That's not one of them.
20:41That's not one of them.
20:42Uh-oh.
20:43That's a bad kick that's shy of the 20-yard line, and so it's going to be a problem for
20:48the Rams.
21:01Landings on infraction.
21:02Kicking team.
21:04The ball will be placed at the 40-yard line.
21:06First down.
21:06And here comes Shador Sanders for the first time in Cleveland.
21:23Loved by many.
21:24It has been a national story throughout training camp.
21:30Did not play last week in the win over the Eagles because of an oblique injury, but lit
21:36up the Carolina skyline.
21:38His NFL debut.
21:40And Sanders, the throw, flushed out of the pocket, looking, dumps it down and connects
21:49with Sal Cannella for a gain of about five and a half.
21:55So, Shador Sanders, your quarterback profile presented to you by Huntington Bank, in that
22:01season opening win over the Panthers, 14-23, almost 140 yards, a couple of touchdowns, most
22:06importantly, did not turn it over that day.
22:08And to me, that was really the big difference between the two rookie quarterbacks, Dylan
22:11Gabriel, with the two turnovers credited to him in his start.
22:14Shador Sanders was clean with zero in his start.
22:18Amani Marshall in the backfield and gets it on second down and gets nowhere.
22:23Maybe loses a half yard.
22:27So, Shador, as we mentioned in the first half, has done and said all the right things.
22:33There's been a lot of people, a lot of national shows that have an opinion on where he should
22:37be on the depth chart, how many reps he should be getting with certain players.
22:41And he has just kind of played football.
22:43He's done a great job blocking out the noise.
22:45You know, he's been a superstar since probably high school and national fans all over the
22:50place.
22:51It can become a distraction if you allow it, but he's just done a great job showing maturity,
22:56keeping it about, hey, I'm just trying to get better.
22:58I'm just trying to help the team.
22:59And he's really been everything the Browns have wanted when they drafted him.
23:03Third and five, Sanders is going to run, and he will not get to the first down.
23:08Picks up maybe a yard, and it'll be three and out for the Browns on their opening drive
23:15of the second half.
23:17Protection just not there, but good decision by Shador.
23:21Like, every drive's not going to end in a touchdown, so you don't have to force it sometimes.
23:24The first play of the drive, he does a nice job picking up some yards instead of throwing
23:28it away.
23:29He throws it to Cannella, and then the run kind of got blown up.
23:33Not really great block by the offensive line up front, and then a good decision there.
23:37Just take a couple yards, try to scramble, but let him punt.
23:43End over end.
23:45Stoops calls for the fair catch right next to a flag.
23:50By the way, the refs have made a lineup change as well.
23:53Brad Allen, head referee, is going to sit this half out.
23:56Chad Hill has taken over.
23:58Player out of bounds on a kick, number 26 of the kicking team.
24:02Five-yard penalty, first down.
24:04And so the Browns, they go three and out on their first drive, and now we'll try and tighten
24:24it up on D.
24:28Browns preseason football on News 5 is brought to you by Toyota.
24:31For all Toyota offers, go to toyota.com.
24:34Toyota, let's go places.
24:37We welcome in the architect of the Cleveland Browns, Andrew Berry.
24:40It's our yearly visit.
24:41That's right, Chris.
24:42How you doing, man?
24:43I'm doing great.
24:44Thank you for having me.
24:45Absolutely.
24:45Boy, do we have a lot of stuff to talk about.
24:48You want to start with quarterbacks?
24:49We can start with quarterbacks.
24:51That's no problem.
24:51Let's do it.
24:52Joe Flacco obviously named the starter this past week, and a lot of people are wondering,
24:57what's the plan for the rookies moving forward?
25:00How do you balance getting a team ready for a game and developing two rookies that you drafted
25:06on the fly?
25:07Well, one of the, really the two primary responsibilities for our coaching staff are to prepare the team
25:12for the upcoming opponent and simultaneously bring our younger players along.
25:17And I know that that has gotten more attention this year just because of the two rookie quarterbacks.
25:22But it's something that Kevin and his staff have done a fantastic job of over the past
25:26five years.
25:29For our particular situation at the quarterback position, I got to give Kevin, Tommy Breeze,
25:34Bill Musgrave a lot of credit in terms of how they've designed and redesigned practices
25:38to make sure that these young players behind the scenes can get the reps necessary to improve.
25:43What sort of things have they done in practice to redesign that practice schedule to make
25:48sure that those guys are getting the quality reps that they need to continue their development?
25:51Yeah, that's a great question, Joe.
25:53I think probably the easiest example for anyone who has come out to the training camp practices
25:58is our approach with what we call two-spotting.
26:01So essentially during seven-on-seven and some team periods, we'll run two concurrent offensive
26:08groups.
26:09So essentially you have almost like a split squad where you have the two young kids on
26:14one field, you have the veterans on the other, and you run the same period concurrently, which
26:18allows all the players to get the necessary reps.
26:20It's almost a little bit like how colleges run their practice because they've got 100 plus
26:23guys, they've got to have two practices basically going on at the same time to get the reps that
26:27they need.
26:28How do you determine whether or not you're comfortable with one of those guys or both of
26:33them being one snap away?
26:34Yeah, so first of all, we have a lot of belief in both Dylan and Shidore, and both of those
26:40guys have had an excellent preseason to date.
26:43And a big part of it is like we measure and track everything in practice, you know, every
26:48throw, every decision, footwork, you name it.
26:50And we talk about the tangible progress that we're seeing on a weekly basis.
26:54Now, nothing is a substitute for competitive game situations, you know, whether it's in the
26:59preseason and then certainly the regular season.
27:01So with any rookie player, not just quarterbacks, there is a little bit of a leap of faith.
27:05But we've been able to see their progress in real time, which gives us the confidence
27:08for both guys.
27:10You always want to see your great players that are making plays in practice carry that
27:14over to game day.
27:14And as a rookie, that's always a question, right?
27:16Are they the same guy in practice?
27:17That's right.
27:18As we're going to see on game day.
27:20So for those two quarterbacks specifically, after tracking and watching them practice, how have
27:25you seen that carry over to how they play on game day?
27:27Yeah.
27:28You know, Joe, you hit the nail on the head.
27:29I call it sometimes, sometimes players get stage fright, you know, not, you know, maybe
27:33not, you know, realistically, but just how they, how they actually perform.
27:37And it's been great to see Dylan and Shadour perform under the lights.
27:42Those guys, they prepare their tails off.
27:44And I think the cooler part is in these uncontrolled settings in games, you see the playmaking
27:49come out.
27:50You know, Joe, you know, there's always a quick whistle in practice for the, you know,
27:52for the quarterbacks that can't get hit.
27:54And in these settings, it's real football.
27:56And to see them be able to produce out of structure, that's probably been the most encouraging
27:59thing.
28:01Browns make a nice play on Schrader.
28:04Who's trying just to get back to the line of scrimmage.
28:07Good job by Cam Thomas.
28:08And also Aiden Huntington, who's been a really nice pickup by you.
28:13Done some great things on special teams and defense as well.
28:16Let's continue a little bit more with the quarterback situation.
28:20Everybody's saying, well, the Browns can't keep four quarterbacks.
28:24So how do you wrestle with that over the next 72 hours?
28:27You know, honestly, it's not much of a decision for us.
28:31All four guys have done what we've asked.
28:33Obviously, three of them have dealt with injuries throughout their time here.
28:37But, you know, the reality of it is, 53-man roster, you have a great player, Cam.
28:43Yeah, there you go.
28:44You can get a little excited here, Drew Barry.
28:46Great player.
28:46That's right, Cameron Thomas.
28:48Do your thing.
28:49You know, you have 53 roster spots.
28:51Five are really developmental or inactive spots.
28:54Plus, post-COVID, the roster roles are just so much more flexible that you can build your
29:0148-game-day roster unless you're wiped out from injury, like, pretty creatively.
29:06Quarterback, it's the most important position in sports.
29:09We have a room that we like all the guys in there.
29:12So we don't really see that as a problem.
29:14We really more see it as an opportunity.
29:16So that typically means that if you're keeping four quarterbacks, you've got to make some
29:20harder decisions in some of those other position rooms.
29:24Is there another position room that you're looking at and saying, hey, we've got a guy
29:27that maybe can play a couple positions.
29:29So you almost get a two-for-one if we keep that player.
29:32And so we can go maybe a little bit lighter than we normally would in this position group
29:36because we are keeping those four quarterbacks.
29:38Yeah, really it's probably in our linebacker and safety rooms because in our defense, call
29:45it the strong safety or quarter position, really has a bit of a blend, you know, with
29:49our second-level defenders.
29:51And so some of the players in each of those rooms, they can live in both worlds, so to
29:57speak.
29:57And that does give us some roster flexibility as we build out the 53.
30:01Gage Larva Dan taking it from his eight.
30:04Takes a big hit with a five-yard return.
30:09And that means that Shador Sanders will return to the field.
30:13What has impressed you most about Shador?
30:15Maybe something that we, the fans, have not seen on social media since that's the end-all,
30:20be-all?
30:21I'll give you two things.
30:23So I think the first thing is it can never be, you know, underestimated how big of a transition
30:28it is for a quarterback to go from college to the NFL.
30:31I think particularly in Shador's case, like he's going from a college offensive system where
30:38you kind of give the example, it's like, okay, imagine you were fluent in English and now
30:42you have to learn Mandarin.
30:43You know, it's not even a Germanic language.
30:44And his growth really since the spring on, you know, the mental side of things, having
30:49commanded the offense, has been real impressive.
30:52And then the second part is just, like, his physical and mental toughness.
30:55You know, for him to be out here so soon after his oblique injury is really no, like, no easy
31:03thing, especially for a thrower.
31:05And, you know, he just loves playing.
31:08He loves being on the lights.
31:08He loves being there for his teammates.
31:10And that's exactly what you want out of your quarterback.
31:13Let's talk a little bit about some other positions on offense.
31:17People are curious about Quinchon Judkins and how we're doing with that.
31:22Yeah.
31:22So there's not much that, you know, that I have an update on in terms of cue.
31:29You know, we'll take that day to day.
31:32And it may not be the situation appropriately.
31:35Second and ten.
31:37After Marshall had the drop, he'll get it put in his belly and get maybe a yard or two.
31:43You just signed Isaiah Bond this week as well.
31:46We saw him on the field for a handful of plays in the first half.
31:49What made you comfortable with that signing?
31:52Yeah.
31:52A big part of it is, you know, we have gotten to know Isaiah's player person over the past
31:58calendar year.
31:59And then obviously done an enormous amount of work, you know, on his legal situation.
32:05You know, that's something that, you know, we never take lightly when a player's in, you
32:09know, involved in a situation or are alleged to be involved in a situation like that.
32:15And really, we got really comfortable doing our due diligence and our investigative work.
32:20We felt comfortable with the, you know, with the player just based on his time with Tommy
32:27Reese at Alabama.
32:29And after his criminal case was resolved, you know, we felt really good about bringing him
32:35into the organization.
32:37Sanders had gotten out of the pocket.
32:39Overshot Travion Williams down the right side.
32:42There are multiple flags down, perhaps, ineligible man downfield.
32:54Joe will always say that for offensive linemen, that's a tough go.
32:58It's a tough one.
32:59Yeah.
32:59Sometimes you're out there trying to get a block for your quarterback and you don't
33:03realize exactly where you are because you think maybe the quarterback has broken contain
33:07and is going to try to take off and run with it.
33:09But, you know, those are the breaks sometimes.
33:12The O-linemen, we're pretty low on the pecking order of if anybody really cares about what
33:15we have to say about something or what we think.
33:17Yeah, Joe, I always think about it as, like, I think O-line's the only position in any sport
33:21where you play with your back to the ball.
33:23And these guys who extend the play or play out of structure, it can make life difficult,
33:28you know, when they don't play on time.
33:31Joe used to play with his back to the basket, too, which was an animal in Wisconsin High School
33:35of Hoops.
33:36You don't want to see this drop step dunk, baby.
33:38So, Andrew, the bad news is we went three and out again on offense.
33:42The good news is you get to stick around as we're going to talk a little defense.
33:45All right.
33:46All right.
33:46More with Andrew Barry in Cleveland.
33:49Browns lead the Rams 16-7.
33:53Browns preseason football on News 5 is presented by University Hospitals, official health care
33:58partner of the Cleveland Browns.
34:00As we continue on with Andrew Barry.
34:03And here's some key dates coming up.
34:05Tuesday, 4 o'clock Cleveland time.
34:07You've got to reduce that roster to 53 players.
34:10The work doesn't stop there.
34:11What are the next several days like for you and your staff?
34:14Yeah, there's a fair amount of turnover at the bottom of the roster after the cutdown date.
34:20And just as we're getting down to 53 players, all 31 other teams are as well.
34:27And so, you know, our focus at that point is really scouring the rest of the players who release
34:33and players that could really help upgrade at the back end of some of these position groups.
34:38So, it's usually a pretty busy and a pretty long night, you know, after the cutdown when we're looking
34:46either to claim, sign, trade for players that we think can help us in the short term.
34:52And then on top of that, we're also signing our 16-member practice squad, which will be
34:57comprised of some players that are currently on R90 and others that will be external.
35:00So, how different is it for you guys having this long layoff versus when we played, you
35:07know, you play Thursday and then all of a sudden Labor Day weekend, you cut down and
35:10you go right back into prepping for that first game of the season.
35:14But you guys have this real long layoff and you mentioned how cut down day works, but what's
35:18the mentality as you're going through this big break here before you actually get into
35:22that game week?
35:23I'd say, number one, it's a lot better from my perspective because it gives you a better
35:28chance to really get healthy as you go into week one.
35:31In terms of the day-to-day of the team, we have next week, we call it Sharp Week, where
35:37we want to make sure we're still high-tempo, we're still making a level of sharpness for
35:42the team going Browns versus Browns.
35:44And then after Labor Day weekend, that's when we really transition into the preparation for
35:48the opener.
35:49Browns drafted Mason Graham, top of the first round, dominant defensive tackle from Michigan.
35:55And the first thing I thought was, oh, I can't wait to see him next to Miles, Garrett.
35:58What have you seen and how have the vision for Mason Graham looked thus far in training
36:03camp, lining him up with Miles Garrett?
36:05We've been very pleased with Mason's progress so far, particularly as an interior rusher.
36:11Our vision was, hey, it's very difficult if you have a guy who can really affect the
36:16passer on the edge and a guy who can do it on the inside.
36:19Miles is always going to get the slide and that gives a one-on-one opportunity for your
36:22interior rusher.
36:23Or if they're going to, you know, double Mason or double interior rusher, then you've got
36:27the best player on, best defensive player on the planet one-on-one against a tackle.
36:31So it really puts the offense in a bit of a bind if you can have two guys that are able
36:37to do that.
36:38A lot has been made about Mason Graham's role in his Michigan defense, where he was more
36:42of a two-gapper.
36:43And now where he's penetrating in Jim Schwartz's defense, how has that transition been for
36:48him?
36:48And what kind of play did you expect out of him as a penetrating guy, as a guy that's
36:53more of a disruptor now here with the Browns?
36:55So physically and his playing personality, we felt like it was going to be a really nice
37:00fit.
37:01He's got quickness.
37:02He's got power.
37:03He's a really high-motor player.
37:04He has range.
37:05That wasn't necessarily always maximized in what he was asked to do at Michigan.
37:11Typically, players that are in a system like that and then go to what we call an attack
37:14front, it takes a little bit of time for them to make the adjustment.
37:18They revert back to maybe old habits because, in Mason's case, he will have played in the
37:22same system for three years.
37:24And what we've been pleasantly surprised is that Mason has really taken to the technique
37:28quite quickly.
37:30And that's not to say that he's perfect, but he's probably learned a little bit more
37:34quickly than we would have anticipated.
37:36Rams with a long pass play to True Edwards.
37:39And the bad news for the Browns is that Julian Okwara is back down behind the play.
37:45Andrew, we're going to take a quick break and then we will continue on.
37:49Rams with the ball down nine in the third.
37:53Kickoff to the regular season just around the corner.
37:55You do not want to miss a single play, so get your seats to your favorite matchups today.
37:59Visit clevelandbrowns.com slash tickets today.
38:02I know these good fans are waiting for number 12, used to be number two, out in Boulder
38:07to get back on the field.
38:09And Andrew Barry would love that as well because it means our defense would get the Rams off
38:12the field.
38:13That's right.
38:13That's right, Chris.
38:14Let's get a stop here.
38:15Even better.
38:16Let's get a turnover.
38:17Oh, I like that.
38:18I like where your head's at there.
38:19That's a former DB for you.
38:21I mean, that's that mentality.
38:23I see.
38:24Dresser win remains in the game.
38:26It's first and ten for the Rams with this play and then start talking about the Browns'
38:32secondary.
38:33Stoops brought down at the 34.
38:37Easton Moscarenas-Arnold on the stop.
38:40So the secondary obviously suffered a really, really tough blow early in camp with MJ Emerson
38:46going down with the Achilles.
38:48Denzel Ward, Greg Newsom, both nursing shoulder injuries.
38:51They're okay.
38:52Second good to go.
38:53We've won the whole bit.
38:53So it's the depth after that that obviously would be a concern for you.
38:57Where are you?
38:58Yeah.
38:59It's, you know, losing MJ, that's a big blow.
39:03And quite frankly, we're never going to be able to fully replace that in season.
39:06But it does give great opportunity for, you know, younger players like Miles Harden and
39:12Ken Mitchell to step up.
39:13I'll touch on Miles specifically just because, you know, he missed most of his rookie year.
39:18He was a seventh-round pick out of South Dakota State for us.
39:21And he's done a really nice job acclimating to our nickel position.
39:26And we've been pleased with his progress.
39:29But we are looking for more guys to step up.
39:31And this is an important game for a number of guys for spots four and five.
39:38That is well done by you, by the way.
39:40That was excellent.
39:43Third and seven for win.
39:47Completes.
39:48Spin.
39:49And not quite getting the first down is Presley.
39:54Good fight.
39:55So that's going to bring up fourth and short.
39:58Nice defensive call by Jim Schwartz.
40:01Running that trap corner.
40:02I said that Dylan Gabriel has to be worried about where you've got your outside cornerback
40:06able to fall off and make a big hit.
40:08Almost disrupts the football there when the ball goes to the inside receiver on an out-breaking route.
40:13All right.
40:14Are we getting one of the measurements?
40:17Here it is.
40:17Yeah, this is it.
40:18It's the Hawkeye virtual measurement system.
40:21Just so that you know, it measures the ball location relative to the line of game.
40:25It does not stop the ball.
40:26That's still human.
40:28You've got a half dozen cameras on one side of the stadium doing this.
40:31It doesn't utilize lasers or chips in the ball.
40:35Here we go.
40:36Now, they say it should take about 30 seconds to do this whole thing.
40:39You don't have this system in your backyard, right?
40:41No, no, I don't, but I'm a huge fan of the Hawkeye technology.
40:44Now, 30 seconds for the games I've watched, I will take the over in terms of how long it's taken.
40:50We're still figuring it out.
40:51But I'll just say, we use, you know, lasers, tracking, here we go, I love this.
40:55Here we go.
40:55Lasers, tracking technology for track and field, all these major sports, and, you know, for decades,
41:01we've still been using just chain loops.
41:03Like, this makes so much more sense to me.
41:05You know, you weren't working on this at Harvard?
41:07I mean, you couldn't have figured out how to get...
41:08I should have, man.
41:10You know, I'll tell you what, that's exactly right.
41:12I wouldn't have made a lot of money.
41:13But you still would have been in this job because you love it in your passion.
41:18All right, by the way, that was nine inches short.
41:20I remember the first time I called it in Carolina.
41:22I think I called it wrong.
41:23It was like, hey, that was 1.2 inches.
41:26Everybody on Twitter, of course, was wonderfully receptive for that.
41:29Yeah.
41:30They were like, hey, you idiots.
41:33I'm sure they gave you a lot of grace, Chris.
41:34All right, let's see what the Browns short yardage defense has.
41:38Let's go.
41:43Win.
41:44Pushing forward.
41:45Wait.
41:46Okay.
41:46Well, that's a first down.
41:48We don't need the Hawkeye for that.
41:51All right, so linebacker-wise, Carson Swessinger, first pick of the second round.
41:56Some people are like, wait, off-ball linebacker?
41:58And obviously you needed him.
42:00J.O.K. not playing this year.
42:01Jordan Hicks retires at the beginning of training camp.
42:04What has Carson Swessinger shown you that maybe even you didn't expect when you turned the name in?
42:10I mean, Carson, it's like we added a five-year vet to the room.
42:13It's very rare for rookie linebackers to be able to come in and wear the green dot right away.
42:20And it's really been seamless with him.
42:23He's long.
42:24He can run.
42:27Great play, RJ.
42:27Yeah, really nice play.
42:29Kamarian James.
42:32You know, Carson, he's got great instincts.
42:34And he has just this insatiable desire to be great.
42:39His work ethic is absolutely outstanding.
42:42And we compare that with physical talent and intelligence.
42:45It's obviously a winning combination.
42:47The rest of that room took a little bit of a hit this past week.
42:51Nathaniel Watson was having a great camp, done for the year with the biceps.
42:54Winston Reed is dinged up as well.
42:56He had to sign a couple of guys, I believe, Wednesday or Thursday, just to fill out for this game.
43:02By the way, good job by Easton Moscarenas-Arnold, who's been great as an undrafted rookie free agent out of USC.
43:09Is that a guy that is being discussed in that room?
43:12Chris, you could not have picked a better segue.
43:14Anyway, we're very pleased, very, very pleased.
43:17This guy's a pro here.
43:19Very pleased with Easton this preseason.
43:22It's funny, him, Carson, and Mason, we might as well call them the triplets because they're always together in the facility.
43:29Since spring, he can run, he's physical, he can play in coverage.
43:34Even though he's a little undersized, that's not as big of a deal in our system.
43:37And, you know, he's made a lot of plays this August for us.
43:41Brown's blitzing win, rolls out right, throws incomplete.
43:46Good job by K.J. Henry getting into the backfield.
43:49Of course, had a pick six last week in Philly.
43:52And the Rams will come out, and it looks like they're going to try a long field goal.
43:57Josh Cardi.
43:58Boy, you've, uh...
44:04Your time of possession this quarter has been immense, I just want to say.
44:08That's good.
44:09I was going to say, yeah.
44:10I mean...
44:10Can you use that in contract negotiations?
44:12You know...
44:13I wish.
44:14I wish.
44:15Joe will gladly volunteer to give back some of the cash he's been taking.
44:19Oh, yeah.
44:20I mean, I was doing this for free.
44:21They're paying you to do this, Chris?
44:22That other stuff that I got when I was playing, I already spent it on cattle and waggy beef and farm.
44:28So it's gone.
44:30All right.
44:32We have a quick timeout.
44:34You want to say goodbye?
44:35You can go.
44:36Or do you want to hang through the kick?
44:38I will give you...
44:39Let's hang through the kick.
44:40Look, I only get to do this once a year with you guys.
44:42That's true.
44:43I'm not trying to kick you out.
44:44You're going to stay the rest of the game.
44:45I'm going to stretch this out of here, Chris.
44:46Chris is trying to get rid of you.
44:47That is not what I'm doing.
44:49I mean, it was soft.
44:50It was professional.
44:51Don't make me come over there.
44:52Do not make me come over there.
44:53Save me, AD.
44:54I know you're a lot stronger than the three of us.
44:56You're the only guy who can help me.
44:57Were you ever the guy in the wing trying to block the kick?
45:00You know what?
45:01I was.
45:02But fun fact, I was actually the holder in college.
45:05Really?
45:05Yeah, I was.
45:06You can't come up and then go back down on the knee.
45:08You're down.
45:09Yeah, I was always a holder.
45:10Did you ever have to throw a pass?
45:11I did.
45:12I did.
45:12I did.
45:13I did.
45:13We completed it.
45:15But we did not convert.
45:17For minus two yards.
45:19So what is your career stat line at quarterback then?
45:22One for one for minus two.
45:24100 rating.
45:2545-yard attempt by Cardi.
45:28And he nails it.
45:30Andrew Barry, it was a pleasure, man.
45:32No, my pleasure is all mine.
45:34Thank you guys for having me.
45:34Good seeing you.
45:34Good luck.
45:35Can't wait to see the final 53 on Tuesday and then beyond.
45:38Janor Sanders in the odd deck circle.
45:41We'll see him right after.
45:43Remember to kick off.
