00:00...backs who get plenty of reps in college.
00:03Chris Rose, Joe Thomas on the call.
00:05We'll see you at the half. Enjoy the game.
00:07He doesn't look any different than he did when he broke into the league at what felt like 23 years old.
00:12And he's still got that trademark energy.
00:15One of the great young minds in our game still, even after nine seasons.
00:19Dustin Hopkins getting all set to boot it away.
00:22Brennan Presley, number 81 for the Rams.
00:24Cody Schrader back there, number 32 as well.
00:30One last chance for the Browns to have a dress rehearsal before the curtain comes up.
00:37Two weeks from tomorrow, we are underway in Cleveland.
00:41Rams will take a knee and start out at the 35-yard line.
00:45And they are under the leadership this afternoon of their fourth-string quarterback, Dresser Wynn.
00:52First-year man out of Tennessee, Martin, who made 32 collegiate starts.
00:56The Browns, you're going to see a lot of starters out there, including the number five overall pick, Mason Graham.
01:03And he's played great thus far in preseason.
01:05The Browns have been very happy with his progress.
01:07Sticking him next to Miles Garrett.
01:09He's got an opportunity to be extremely disruptive for this Browns.
01:13Very, very talented defensive line.
01:15Not going to see Miles Garrett or the two starting corners.
01:18Denzel Ward, Greg Noose, and both those guys nursing shoulder injuries.
01:22They should be good to go, though, in week one.
01:26Rams are going to keep it on the ground.
01:29Tarquez Hunter, their fourth-round pick out of Auburn.
01:33Today's defensive position battle brought to you by Big Fig, the mattress made for more crafted in Cleveland, just like our Browns.
01:40Linebacker situation got a little tough this past week.
01:44Nathaniel Watson had a great preseason loss for the year with a biceps injury.
01:48Winston Reed dinged up as well, so this depth will be tested, but you see Carson Swessinger, first pick of the second round.
01:55He's going to be right in the middle of that Browns defense.
01:59It's Hunter again up the gut and about a yard shy of the first down.
02:07First two plays there for the Rams are running what we call duo, which is basically power blocking without pulling anybody.
02:14Just getting double teams at the point of attack, letting the running back find a little bit of a hole and pushing the Browns defensive line a little bit,
02:22but an opportunity here on third down to step up and get off the field.
02:26Getting a good look at Malik Collins, one of the free agent signings, a 10-year vet on that defensive line.
02:33Third and one.
02:35Whistles and a flag.
02:37First one of the afternoon.
02:38Here's our referee, Brad Allen.
02:40False start.
02:42Offense.
02:43Everyone but the snapper.
02:45One of my favorites.
02:48Do you guys all look at each other when that happens?
02:50Well, I'm glad you look at the center and you go, well, I'm glad they didn't call my number.
02:55Because I've had a few times when Alex Mack didn't snap it when he was supposed to, and so I move, and then they give me the penalty,
03:01and then now I'm answering the questions in the media after, why'd you have two penalties in the game?
03:05And then you're left with this conundrum.
03:07Do I throw Alex Mack under the bus, or do I just take it?
03:10Calling him out.
03:11Wasn't he like a seven-time pro bowler?
03:13He was all right.
03:16Third and six.
03:17Blitz by the Browns, and wind gets destroyed.
03:21It was Carson Swessinger getting right in there on the linebacker blitz.
03:25You see what sort of quickness he brings.
03:28Yeah, that was really good by the Browns, but this is what sometimes is going to happen when you've got Jim Schwartz,
03:33who's not afraid to go into his bag of tricks, even though it's some of the backups here for the Rams.
03:37He's going to blitz.
03:38It's third down.
03:39He's going to call his call, and nobody there in Carson Swessinger, who just runs right through the A-gap and smokes the Rams quarterback.
03:46Ethan Evans on to boot it away for the Rams.
03:48DeAndre Carter.
03:52First time we get a look at him in the preseason.
03:54The veteran return man takes it at the 13.
03:58Up close to the 25, and now we will get a chance to see the Browns' number one offense,
04:04led by 40-year-old Joe Flacco now in his 18th season.
04:09Your Huntington Bank quarterback profile.
04:11It's proud to be the official bank of the Cleveland Browns.
04:14Flacco wowed this organization by going 4-1 down the stretch,
04:19coming off the couch to start and lead this team to the playoffs two years ago.
04:25Man can still spin it.
04:2840 years old.
04:29I'm happy when I can get out of my chair every morning,
04:32and Flacco's out there still spinning and running around like he's almost 30.
04:36Aiden Huntington, one of the defensive linemen, the fullback in motion,
04:39paving the way for the rookie, Dylan Sampson.
04:42Yeah, we just saw number 66 line up as an extra tight end and bring it.
04:47I love that play.
04:48They're running like a wham play.
04:49So Aiden Huntington, he lines up in the fullback position,
04:52goes in short motion, and comes down and whams the defensive tackle.
04:56They run a zone-blocking concept up front, just kind of a physical in-your-face.
05:00Let them know what the day's going to be all about for the Browns' O-line.
05:03Flacco in shotgun with the fourth-round pick, Sampson, in the backfield.
05:08So first throw of the day, looks left, throws, connects, incomplete.
05:13A little too low, actually, for the pro bowler, Jerry Judy,
05:15who had an outstanding first season with the Browns a year ago.
05:18Yeah, the Browns picked up Jerry Judy last year.
05:20I think there was some wonderment about what you were going to get out of the guy,
05:24but he's been incredible.
05:26He's been a pro bowler, having his best season as an NFL player,
05:29and him and Joe Flacco have had a special connection thus far in training camp.
05:34And 90 catches a year ago, that's the most of any Browns player in team history.
05:40Third and six.
05:44Flacco to throw again.
05:47Looks, reads, connects with David Njoku.
05:50He's going to be tackled shy of the first down.
05:52That's our old buddy Tony Fields wrapping him up.
05:55On his return to Cleveland, of course, spent the first four years of his career,
05:59and he's fired up.
06:01Browns go three and out.
06:02Not as excited.
06:03Yeah, not as excited for the Browns, but if you're a former Brown and you're out there,
06:07you're going to be excited about making a play against your former team,
06:10even in the preseason, and he let them know about it a little bit there.
06:13Remember me?
06:14Corey Bohorquez, who's had an outstanding preseason,
06:18on to kick it away to Drake Stoops.
06:20Yeah, that's the son of former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.
06:24This one boomed inside the 10.
06:26Stoops is going to let it hop.
06:28Takes a friendly Cleveland roll and gets down inside the five.
06:32So, Corey Bohorquez, yeah, package him up.
06:35He is ready for opening Sunday after another boot of 52 yards.
06:42Rams go three and out.
06:43Browns return the favor.
06:44We're scoreless in Cleveland.

06:56Both teams three and out in the early going,
06:59all right, dude, I see you.
07:01He's ready.
07:02He's ready for the regular season.
07:07Rams under the leadership of Dresser Wynn.
07:10Jarquez Hunter remains in the backfield.
07:12Rams will keep it on the ground for not much right in the middle of that Browns defense.
07:21And one thing we're keeping our eye on, Joe, the back seven, particularly the cornerbacks,
07:26because after Ward and Newsome, I think there's a lot of question marks right now.
07:30We have Ward banked up his shoulder, so he's not out there today.
07:34Those guys are pro bowlers.
07:36We know what we got there.
07:37But with the loss of M.J. Emerson, they've been looking for that nickel slot corner to be able to step up.
07:42And they think maybe Nick Needham has moved into that role from safety and could possibly be that answer this year.
07:49So we'll be watching him today.
07:52Second and eight for the Rams.
07:54Play fake.
07:55Wynn being chased.
07:57Throws.
07:57Ball's going to be out.
07:59It was Miles Harden that would have had an easy pick six if he could have stayed in bounds.
08:06And Harden is one of those guys that's vying for that slot corner.
08:10A missed opportunity for him in this Cleveland defense.
08:13Great job here with some pressure right in the face as the Rams quarterback's trying to boot to his left,
08:18which is challenging because you've got to flip your hips to be able to get the ball out there.
08:21And you've got to make that catch, though, there by Harden.
08:25He's one of the guys, like Chris mentioned, that's vying for that nickel slot position.
08:30And you've got to make that, take that into the zone, baby.
08:32Miles Harden, a seventh-round pick a year ago.
08:37Rams on third down.
08:38Brown's blitzed in.
08:39They're coming.
08:40And their second win just outside of the end zone, it looks like.
08:44As he's maybe about three inches clear of the goal line,
08:50it was Alex Wright continuing his outstanding camp at his defensive line.
08:55Coach Jacques Cazaire loves it.
08:58I love it.
08:58They're actually replacing a defensive tackle who's dropping into coverage,
09:02so it's a sole blitz.
09:03They're bringing their linebacker from the second level.
09:06That's Grant Delpit, actually, from the safety spot there.
09:09And the Rams just have no answer.
09:11It's interesting because the Rams didn't really treat this too seriously,
09:14but I think Jim Schwartz is saying, I don't care.
09:16We're going to make them pay anyway.
09:19Ethan Evans right up against the end line, kicks it away.
09:22Carter, and it's a good boot, takes it at his 46, into Rams territory,
09:30keeps his footing and gets it inside the 45 before he is leveled.
09:34And the Browns will start their second drive in Rams territory.
09:39Joe Flacco three and out the first time.
09:41We'll get another crack at it in a scoreless game.
09:44Kickoff to the regular season just around the corner.
09:47You do not want to miss a single play,
09:49so get your seats to your favorite matchups today.

09:56Browns with their second possession after a punt return by DeAndre Carter.
10:00And you're looking at one of the newest Cleveland Browns, Isaiah Bond,
10:03to sign this week after a Texas grand jury no-billed a sexual assault charge
10:08stemming from an April arrest.
10:09Andrew Berry, who will join us a little bit later, said they spent much of the last calendar year getting to know him.
10:15They are comfortable with him.
10:17And he is now officially a part of the team after signing a three-year deal.
10:21Joe Flacco swings it out to Ford.
10:24Gets about three down close to the 40.
10:28Aditi Kikawala joining us this afternoon from the sidelines.
10:31Hi, Aditi.
10:31Hi, Chris.
10:32Joe Flacco is the father of four boys and a brilliant little girl.
10:37And his two older sons have very famously been on the record saying they're not impressed with their dad.
10:42In fact, one of them went to a game that their dad was starting in Miami wearing a Tyree Kill jersey.
10:47So this week, Flacco tells us that he called his oldest son, Steven.
10:51He said that, I won the starting job.
10:54Steven told his second brother, Daniel.
10:55And Daniel said, nuh-uh.
10:57Flacco told us he didn't even believe it until he actually saw the news headline.
11:02Tough audience.
11:03It is a tough audience.
11:04There's a run by Ford who bounces outside.
11:08Gets the Browns' initial first down.
11:09Delivers some punishment and gets it down close to the 30.
11:12By the way, that sideline report from Aditi was presented by Sugardale, the official bacon of the Cleveland Browns.
11:19So this is a duo, just like we were talking.
11:21But Drone Ford does a great job.
11:23Initially running right at the line of scrimmage and draws the linebackers down to that line of scrimmage.
11:28And then he bounces to the outside to his left using his speed to run around the defense.
11:32And make a nice run with a great finish there.
11:34Lowering his shoulder and the boom on the sideline.
11:37Browns with four of their five starting offensive linemen in the game.
11:40The Pro Bowler, Joel Batonio, getting the Veterans Day off.
11:45First and ten, it's Ford.
11:48Gets wrapped up after a gain of maybe one.
11:53All right, time right now for the offensive line.
11:58The position group to watch presented to you by Big Fig.
12:02And, yeah, we're watching all these dudes right here.
12:04The interesting thing about it is that four of the five guys, when you're talking about Batonio, Posek, Teller, and Conklin, they're all in their 30s.
12:12They're all in the last years of their deal.
12:15You know, I don't usually like to talk offensive line, but we got four really veteran, excellent players here.
12:20And that's why the Browns want to lean on their run game this season.
12:24That's Gage Larvidan on the quick hitter.
12:27No gain, maybe even a loss of one.
12:29Not sure exactly what was supposed to happen there.
12:34Kate Davis was blocking for that ball to go outside.
12:38And Larvidan actually tried to cut it up inside and ended up cutting up right into the Rams defender.
12:43And that's why the play didn't work.
12:44So those two guys, not on the same page.
12:47The operation is really what we're looking for here.
12:49Making sure everybody's clean with their technique.
12:51And just not clean on that one.
12:53Third and nine for the Browns.
12:56Midway through this opening quarter.
12:58Flacco.
12:59Time.
13:00Swings it.
13:01Sampson.
13:01Spin move.
13:02First down inside the 20.
13:05Nice job by the rookie out of Tennessee.
13:10And there's bad news.
13:11The Browns starting center, Ethan Posek, is down in the backfield.
13:16Well, this is something we've seen too much of in recent years.
13:30As they look at his lower leg, we will take a break and get an update with the Browns moving.
13:38Browns preseason football on News 5 is brought to you by Toyota.
13:41For all Toyota offers, go to toyota.com.
13:43Toyota, let's go places.
13:46And unfortunately, the place where Ethan Posek went was the blue tent.
13:49He did walk off under his own power.
13:52And we will get you an update momentarily.
13:55In the meantime, Luke Whipler, the third-year center out of Ohio State, has taken his place.
14:00Browns are in the red zone.
14:01It's presented by Milkbone.
14:03Milkbone bringing War Dog to the dog pound.
14:06Rams bringing a blitz on that.
14:09Stopping Sampson.
14:10Didn't even get back to the line of scrimmage.
14:13So it'll be second and long.
14:14Harold Fennett Jr., the Browns' impressive tight end, I believe, was in there blocking back.
14:22And it looked like he was a little bit confused about who he was supposed to get there when the Rams blitzed off their left edge.
14:30And just left the guy unblocked.
14:31He was able to get in there and then running back and take him to the ground.
14:33Jerome Ford is checked back into the game.
14:37Once again, the starter's expected to play between 20 and 25 snaps.
14:41Flacco, another throw.
14:43Looks.
14:43End zone.
14:44Fannin.
14:45Touchdown!
14:45Maybe he didn't know who to block on the previous play, but he knows where to go to catch the passes.
14:52Some guys, you don't waste time teaching them out of block when they can catch like that and get themselves open, making themselves available.
15:00Great job on the skinny poster.
15:02Flacco looks off the safety and then comes right back to Harold Fannin Jr., who catches the football and then takes the hit all the way into the end zone.
15:11Great job by the young player hanging on to it.
15:13When you get those quick posts in the red zone, you've got to be ready to secure the football quickly and take that hit and go all the way to the ground with the ball.
15:22Excellent job by the young tight end.
15:24Dustin Hopkins on for the PAT.
15:27He nails it.
15:29Browns take over in Rams territory.
15:33March 43 yards.
15:34The pride of Canton McKinley and Bowling Green, his first NFL touchdown as Fannin gives the Browns a 7-0.
15:45Back in Cleveland, Browns scoring drive presented by Howard Hanna.
15:49Win big with Howard Hanna, the official real estate provider of the Cleveland Browns.
15:53Joe Flacco, 4-4-4 on that drive, including a 15-yard TD toss to the rookie, Harold Fannin.
16:01Aditi?
16:01Oh, Chris, Ethan Posick walked into the locker room of his own accord.
16:07I'm watching Dylan Gabriel warm up right now.
16:09It looks like Joe Flacco's day may be done.
16:12All right.
16:13So Kevin Stefanski told us 20-25 plays.
16:16Looks like it's going to be a little less than that.
16:18The third rounder out of Oregon will be up next.
16:22Hopkins' kick, taken by Presley, trying to get across field.
16:26He's got nowhere to go as he gets swallowed up by Christopher Edmonds at the 16-yard line.
16:32Today's Browns trivia is brought to you by Franklin University.
16:35Franklin makes it possible for you to earn an affordable degree that fits your life.
16:39Hey, who was the youngest Browns player to make a Pro Bowl appearance?
16:43Miles Garrett, David Njoku, Joel Batonio, Denzel Ward.
16:48We'll have the answer coming up in a bit.
16:51You feel pretty confident about that one?
16:52You didn't look it up, right?
16:54I did not look it up.
16:56How old were you when you first made the Pro Bowl run?
16:58I think it would have been 23.
17:0123 sounds about right.
17:02Okay.
17:03But I think those guys were significantly younger.
17:05Miles, I think it was 20.
17:07Same with Njoku.
17:07Well, let's not give it away.
17:08Don't know when they came in the NFL.
17:10I got it.
17:10I got it.
17:10Just give it some, you know, tips.
17:12Tips and tricks.
17:13Whistle and a flag.
17:15And it looks like delay a game.
17:16Fire to the expiration of the play clock is a charged timeout.
17:22Los Angeles, their first.
17:25It will be 30 seconds.
17:26We talked about operation, right?
17:28Which is always the boring thing to talk about in preseason.
17:31But it's really what the coaches want to get out of this game.
17:34If you're looking at the Browns starters.
17:35And what you just saw there is what Kevin Stavancy does not want to see from his starters
17:41and from any of his guys.
17:42Because you're coming out of a timeout and you almost go through the whole play clock
17:46and have to waste a timeout.
17:47That is a bad ball.
17:49I'm guessing Sean McVay didn't love it either.
17:51Sean McVay is going, come on, guys.
17:53I know that I didn't bring all my dudes, but let's get the plan.
17:56You guys have had it for 40 seconds.
17:58The pride of Miami University, by the way.
18:00Born in Dayton, Ohio.
18:03His formative years down in Georgia where he actually won Football Player of the Year
18:07over Calvin Johnson down there.
18:09That's Hunter with some bruising running up near the 20.
18:16Defensively, you just saw Jim Schwartz now in his third year as the D.C.
18:20And two years ago, this was the number one defense in the NFL.
18:23Fell to about the middle of the pack a season ago.
18:25But based on what we've seen in camp and especially those two joint practices
18:29with the Super Bowl champion Eagles, they could be back to the 2023 level.
18:33We're really not sure how explosive this offense is going to be.
18:36It's going to be more of the ground and pound and take shots with Flacco.
18:39But watching that defense against Carolina and then specifically against the Philadelphia
18:43Eagles offense, I think gave Brown's fans a lot of confidence because they were completely
18:47dominant from the front all the way to the coverage in the back end.
18:50Well, that's Malik Collins making the stop.
18:54Ten-year vet signed in the offseason.
18:57He's former, originally a third-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys.
19:01Wherever he has gone, whether it's been with Houston or the Raiders or Dallas,
19:06the guy has always produced.
19:07Just a pro.
19:08Yeah, those are the guys that you want, especially on the defensive line,
19:11on the inside that are just reliable.
19:13They're always going to maintain their gap.
19:15They're always going to be a problem for the offense.
19:17Third and six for the Rams, still looking for their initial first out of the game.
19:28Keeping it on the ground and getting nowhere close to the sticks
19:31because Isaiah McGuire continues his remarkable run this preseason.
19:37Guess who?
19:38Isaiah McGuire.
19:38He already had two pressures on the Rams' quarterbacks, but there is a play.
19:43Let's see what this one is.
19:45Don't call Tawny.
19:46After the play was over, unsportsmanlike contact, defense number 57.
19:5215-yard penalty, automatic, goes down.
19:57Okay, well, that's one of those that the league has started to tighten the screws on in recent years.
20:05I suppose celebrating is one thing.
20:08They're drawing the line pretty early here in the preseason,
20:11make sure the guys know during the regular season that's going to be a no-go.
20:14Preseason is a lot of time for the officials to emphasize and maybe call a little bit more than they normally would
20:19on some of the points that they've been talked to by the NFL that they really want to make sure that they tighten things up.
20:25So I think that's something that maybe doesn't get called in the regular season.
20:28So first down, and that ball is incomplete as Devin Bush knocked it out of the hands of Stoops.
20:36Devin Bush doing a great job here recognizing the route coverage, seeing the eyes of the quarterback,
20:46breaking on the play, and sticking his hand out there to disrupt the opportunity for the receiver to catch the ball,
20:52bring it all the way into his chest.
20:54Excellent reaction there by Devin Bush with his eyes on the quarterback first,
20:57and then finding where that ball is going and disrupting the play.
20:59It's going to be a fast linebacking crew with Bush, Swessinger, and Diabate this year.
21:07Rams again on the ground, and again it's Devin Bush wrapping up Hunter, and a loss of a yard.
21:16Jim Schwartz doesn't care that this is a preseason game.
21:19He's blitzing.
21:20He's treating this game plan just like he would in the regular season.
21:23You see Devin Bush there from his linebacker spot to the offense is right,
21:26running right through the middle of that defense again.
21:28It's a quick recognition by him.
21:31Cleveland, their first.
21:33It will be 30 seconds.
21:34Quick recognition.
21:35Thanks, Brad.
21:35I appreciate you cutting me off there.
21:37Quick recognition by Devin Bush, understanding what the play is, seeing the ball,
21:41and then blasting right through the A-gaps of the Los Angeles Rams for a big play.
21:46All right, we will pause now for a word from Sarshawn Auto Group.
21:51I'm Miles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns.
21:53Proud to be a member of Team Sarshawn.
21:58Join us in Sarshawn Auto Group as we drive towards a brighter future.
22:15Because when we come together, on and off the field, we can accomplish anything.
22:18Community, teamwork, strength.
22:20That's what we're all about.
22:21Well, that's the most airtime Miles Garrett has gotten here in the preseason.
22:25Right there.
22:26Good job.
22:27Hope he's not tired after that long commercial there.
22:30We saw him warming up today a little bit.
22:32Yes, in pads.
22:33They're in pads.
22:34And actually, he was the last Brown to leave the field during pregame
22:37to a thunderous ovation.
22:39Or sign that four-year extension.
22:41Third and 11 for the Rams.
22:49Win.
22:49Plenty of time.
22:50Good protection.
22:52Leaks out.
22:54He's going to run it.
22:55Ended up about six yards shy of the first down.
22:59First time the Rams' offensive line has been sound in their protection.
23:02Browns are running some stunts there.
23:05ETs, TEs, trying to get their guys free.
23:07Just rushing four for one of the few times here we've seen today.
23:11And great job by the Rams.
23:13But the secondary for the Browns holds up in coverage and forces the punt.
23:16That's really the way you draw it up.
23:17When you're only going to send four on a third and long,
23:20you've got to have that good, tight coverage in the back end.
23:22And expect a throwaway or quarterback just scrambling and getting out of bounds.
23:26Looks like Joe Flacco's going to get a third bite at the apple.
23:29He's got his helmet back on.
23:31First, Carter from the 10.
23:34Gets it up to the 20.
23:37And here comes Joe Flacco for a third and perhaps final series.
23:44Five for six today.
23:45The lone misfire.
23:46His first attempt of the day to Jerry Judy.
23:50Which was really a ball that Judy should have caught.
23:53Flacco threw it low and away.
23:55Not an easy catch.
23:56I mean, I couldn't have made it.
23:57But that's one that you'd like to see caught.
23:59So for Flacco, a very efficient outing thus far.
24:02Jack Conklin, the right tackle, has been removed from the game.
24:08So Jackson Barton, number 68, is checked in.
24:13Teller and Jones, the two opening day starters, remain in.
24:19Once again, if we hear anything about Ethan Posick, we will pass it along.
24:24Flacco on a play fake.
24:26Dumps it out to Ford.
24:27Nice adjustment on the catch.
24:29Gains about a yard or so before being brought down by Cam Lampkin.
24:35Jerome Ford does a great job finishing with the ball in his hand.
24:38A couple times down the sideline already.
24:40We've seen him lower his shoulder, gain a couple extra yards there.
24:43Running after the catch.
24:45Giving a nice little move near the sideline.
24:47But just not going down easy, right?
24:48That's that mentality that as a running back you want to build.
24:51Even in preseason, even in training camp.
24:54So it carries over during the regular games.
25:00Second and nine for the Browns.
25:04That's Pierre Strong for the first time.
25:08Dragged down after a minimal gain.
25:10Strong was great last week in the win in Philadelphia.
25:14Ran 13 times for 89 yards.
25:17Has a real burst about him.
25:18Averages five yards per carry.
25:19He's a guy I'd like to see get in on the action a little bit more.
25:22Yeah, with Quinchon Judkins' status with the Browns still a little bit in question,
25:27who are going to be the workhorse backs for the Browns this season?
25:31Jerome Ford's done a great job.
25:33They've had some really nice play from Dylan Sampson and Pierre Strong.
25:37Had the right tackle.
25:38Not missed his block on that one.
25:39You may have some space there for a man to run.
25:42Third and eight.
25:43Screen set up.
25:44Plenty of space.
25:45It's going to be strong.
25:46Gets the first down.
25:47Passed the 35 and the 40.
25:51Browns with the perfect play call against the Rams.
25:55Really nice timing on the screen.
25:57You'll see here the Browns do a great job of starting the protection and then getting out in time.
26:01You saw a great block there by number 56, Luke Whipler, the center, who's in for the Ethan Posick injury.
26:08And great job there with the finish on this run.
26:11Again, not going down easy.
26:13Getting those extra yards.
26:14Converting that thing to a first down and keeping the chains moving.
26:18Minute and a half to go here in the opening quarter.
26:20Flacco is connected on seven of his first eight for 55 yards.
26:29Flacco to throw again.
26:31Connects with Njoku.
26:33And a first down into Rams territory down at the 45.
26:36Boy, David Njoku became a different player when Joe Flacco signed on at the end of the 2023 season.
26:45These guys have tremendous chemistry.
26:46Those guys have such a special connection.
26:49Flacco feels so comfortable with the way Njoku finds the little open space, those windows.
26:54Kind of like if you remember Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelsey.
26:57It's like they're just playing basketball out there.
26:59They're going to an open spot.
27:01Nothing that's written in the playbook.
27:02But they just have that great feel between the two of them.
27:04Called them a beautiful human being.
27:06Classic Njoku comments there.
27:13Flacco again.
27:15Fannon.
27:16He's got nowhere to go.
27:17Well read by the red.
27:18But look at this.
27:19The spin move.
27:21He was not finished.
27:25That's about as good a two-yard reception as you'll see at this level.
27:30That was a fun one for being a play that really was sniffed out early by the Rams.
27:35It was supposed to be a tight end screen.
27:37They were kind of all over that.
27:39But you know what I really like is that Browns have had a physical training camp this year.
27:44You're seeing the results on the field here with that physicality.
27:48Well, the Browns starters have played the balance of the first quarter, and it has shown a little sparky.
27:54That's right.
27:56Harold Vannon Jr.
27:58Connecting with Joe and a 7-9.
27:59Today's first quarter stats brought to you by Park Place Technologies.
28:04Park Place Technologies supporting 100,000 data centers in 180 countries and your Cleveland Browns.
28:10And aren't they glad that they did?
28:12Browns with another dominant quarter.
28:14In fact, the Rams' lone first down came courtesy of a taunting penalty.
28:18Joe Flacco spinning it.
28:21Nine straight completions.
28:23Six different receivers have caught passes.
28:26It's got to go in here.
28:28As do the Browns' opening play of the second quarter.
28:32Flacco.
28:33Pressured.
28:34Dropped.
28:35Elias Neal with the sack.
28:45In the meantime, the Browns' last drive resulted in the touchdown for the first string offense.
28:50Jerome Ford laying the wood.
28:52And then Dylan Sampson with the spin move to eventually set up the rookie tight end.
28:57Bill Fannett Jr. running the post.
28:58Doing a great job securing the football.
29:00Taking the hit and getting that touchdown in the NFL for a guy that's playing college ball down the street.
29:07That's got to be a big moment even in the preseason.
29:10Third and 18.
29:11Browns will keep it on the ground.
29:13Strong gets back a few.
29:15And so let's see if it'll be punt time.
29:18It will be.
29:18As Corey Pajorquez trots onto the field for the second time today.
29:23So the Browns were moving yet again.
29:25But the sack did them in.
29:27It's an area they're definitely going to have to clean up.
29:30But only Caleb Williams was sacked more times a season ago than the Cleveland Browns quarterbacks.
29:35And a lot of those were just getting on the same page with your protection schemes between your tight ends,
29:40your running backs, your offensive line, and then a quarterback knowing where he's protected.
29:44That one that we had a sack of Monte Marshall.
29:46Didn't use great technique and block inside out on that linebacker who was able to slip him to the inside and get up.
29:53Offense number 22.
29:55Five-yard penalty.
29:56Fourth down.
30:00So a false start almost at five yards back for the Browns.
30:05Give our punter a little bit more space there.
30:08We saw Corey Pajorquez on his last punt standing on his 20-yard line.
30:11Boothed the ball, landed on the one-yard line, bounces back.
30:15So he's got plenty of leg and probably actually is not upset about backing up a little bit.
30:19Well, you could keep it going for him.
30:21Last year, he booted an 84-yarder against the Raiders.
30:24That was the longest in Browns history.
30:28Stoops to return.
30:29It calls for the fair catch at his own 11.
30:34All right.
30:35Time right now for your trivia answer.
30:37It is brought to you by Franklin University.
30:39Franklin makes it possible for you to earn an affordable degree that fits your life.
30:42The question was, who is the youngest Browns player to make a Pro Bowl appearance?
30:45You want to guess?
30:46I would guess Myles Garrett.
30:47I think that's a safe bet.
30:49Oh, Denzel Ward.
30:51Close.
30:5221 years old.
30:53The first of four Pro Bowl appearances.
30:55And coming off his best season, by the way, a year ago.
30:58It was tough for the team.
31:00He was outstanding.
31:01Greg Newsom called him the best cornerback in the league this offseason.
31:04And he's really played like that thus far in the preseason training camp.
31:09Cody Schrader in the backfield for the Rams.
31:12His dresser win remains in the game.
31:13Looks deep.
31:14Looks left.
31:16Overthrows Terrence Ferguson, the second-round pick out of Oregon,
31:19who caught an awful lot of passes from the Browns' third-round selection, Dylan Gabriel.
31:24Rayshon Jenkins there doing a nice job.
31:26He's got man coverage there trying to run.
31:28We used to call it like a stomp route.
31:30Basically, it's just an inside fade there where when you have inside leverage by the defender,
31:35you've got some space on the sideline as long as you don't get any hook-curl player that's sliding out there.
31:40But good job, Rayshon Jenkins, squeezing the receiver to the sideline,
31:43giving the quarterback nowhere to throw the football.
31:45For a guy that played offensive line, you know a lot about catching the ball.
31:48I can look at spaces.
31:49I can't catch it, but I can tell you what you should have done.
31:51Not true.
31:51Not true.
31:53End of round.
31:54That's Presley getting up toward the 20.
31:57Good spin move.
31:58Dom Jones finally wraps him up, but not before a Rams first down.
32:04Up to the 28-yard line.
32:07Dom Jones in there on the tackle.
32:09He's going to be one of the guys that they're taking a good look at here and trying to figure out what type of a role can he have in the secondary this year with,
32:16like I mentioned earlier, the injury to MJ Emerson, trying to figure out what that depth is going to look like behind Newsom and Ward.
32:21Yeah, it's possible the Browns are going to be doing a little cornerback shopping on cut down Tuesday.
32:27Four o'clock Cleveland time.
32:30Trader right up the middle.
32:33There's a lot of the Browns' second team defense is in there now.
32:37Gain of almost eight.
32:38We talked about Jim Schwartz's defense being really impressive all preseason, pretty much unlockable from that defensive line.
32:48And one of their marquees is the way that they run to the football, the way they hit, the way they play physical, you know,
32:53kind of reflection of the defensive coordinator's attitude and the type of person he is there.
32:58So a little soft on that direct run from the Rams.
33:01You'd like to see him tighten it up here, maybe send a pressure right here from their linebacker core.
33:06Presley in motion.
33:07He's going to get it.
33:09And he spins out of a tackle.
33:11Does a nice job to get the ball back.
33:14Maybe a yard gain.
33:18Devin Bush had him wrapped up for just a second.
33:21Actually, it was Troyan Shoyinka who had him initially.
33:25And then Bush to clean it up.
33:27Nice athletic play there by Troyan Shoyinka.
33:30Seeing the jet sweep and being able to just run upfield and get his hand on that receiver.
33:35It's a tough angle for him.
33:36You've got a guy who's already faster than you running towards the sideline.
33:39And you've got to be able to make that play.
33:41Otherwise, that guy runs a long way down your sideline.
33:44Third and two.
33:45Rams on the ground.
33:47Trader tripped up behind the line of scrimmage.
33:50And he'll lose one.
33:54And they'll bring the punt unit back on.
33:57So, the Browns defense tightens.
34:00Brown sends secondary pressure there.
34:02Great job by number 28.
34:05Rayshon Jenkins is getting in there.
34:07Getting physical.
34:08Clouding up those gaps to the inside where the Rams are trying to run.
34:11Giving them an opportunity to get off the field here.
34:14Forcing the Rams to punt.
34:1612-year veteran Shelby Harris in on the action there.
34:19Now in his third year with the Browns.
34:22What a great career he's had.
34:23As originally a seventh round pick.
34:27Evans for the fourth time.
34:29And Carter's going to watch it sail out of bounds.
34:31Well, Joe Flacco's day appears to be done.
34:39Up next, the third round pick.
34:41Dylan Gabriel makes his home debut for the Browns.
34:45With a 7-0 lead.
34:50Browns preseason football on News 5 is presented by Huntington Bank.
34:54Huntington Bank is proud to be the official bank of the Cleveland Browns.
34:58Speaking of which, our quarterback profile is also brought to you by Huntington.
35:01And Bank has made a change.
35:03It's the third round pick.
35:04Dylan Gabriel, who went 13th from 18 in a starter's role last week.
35:09The win over the Eagles.
35:10However, a couple of turnovers.
35:11He's going to look to improve on that.
35:14Looked great.
35:15Except for those two turnovers.
35:16Which is hard to say.
35:17But when you're a rookie in your first start, you've got to take the win of operation, decision-making,
35:23and just try to clean up those two mistakes here in this second opportunity.
35:26Pierre Strong spins forward for about three.
35:32So with Gabriel, and then we'll see Shador Sanders.
35:35The big question is, does this organization feel comfortable with them being one snap away?
35:41Yeah, the plan all along was going to have Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett competing for that number one spot.
35:48Flacco wins it almost a little bit by default because Kenny Pickett has a long hamstring injury.
35:53And the speculation now is, hey, these young guys have looked good enough in their first two opportunities that, hey,
35:59maybe they can be one snap away and make them really the backup quarterback when the season starts.
36:04Gabriel to throw across the middle, connects.
36:06That's Jamari Thrash for a first down past the 35.
36:10Those two had a great connection last week in Philly.
36:14Gabriel showing a veteran-like ability to look off the defense.
36:18Look at that.
36:19He's looking to his left first, and then he comes back all the way across the middle to Jamari Thrash.
36:23The second window on the dig route over the middle.
36:26Great job manipulating the defense with your eyes.
36:28Something that a lot of times you just see with veteran quarterbacks.
36:31Gain of 15, gets the ball up to the 38.
36:40Strong remains in the game.
36:46He'll get the ball.
36:47Big hole, and he takes a big hit.
36:53Tanner Engel delivering the shot, but a gain of eight.
36:57A really nice shot by the left side of the Browns' offensive line.
37:00They recognized that the Rams were bringing pressure from over there.
37:03They were able to slide out, pass off the little slant game that the Rams were trying to make,
37:09and actually stunt what the Rams were trying to do.
37:12Open up that huge lane for Pierre Strong to just run straight.
37:14And if you're running back and grab the ball and just run straight up the field for eight yards,
37:18that's what we call a good run for the offensive line.
37:21Amani Marshall, who's been really impressive as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Appalachian State,
37:26checks into the backfield.
37:28Gabriel, pressured, spins, rolls left, and just wisely throws it away.
37:35That's the type of play that the fans are not super pumped about,
37:38but the Browns coaching staff is really happy because it's decision-making as a rookie quarterback.
37:43It's deciding when to try to make that play and take that chance,
37:47and then sometimes just go live to play another down.
37:50Throw the ball out of bounds.
37:51Try to get out of the pocket, but understand you don't have to win the game on every single throw.
37:56Particularly when you gain eight yards on first down.
37:58Yeah, exactly.
37:58It's third and two.
37:59You're still in a very manageable situation to be able to pick this up.
38:03So good job knowing the situation as well.
38:04Good job by my man over here, Chris Rose, identifying that as well.
38:08Well, unfortunately, I'm not the age of a rookie.
38:10Marshall is going to get the first down and get it close to midfield as the drive continues.
38:16So big picture here.
38:17What do you think the Browns are thinking with their two rookies at this point?
38:21Obviously, a lot of it depends on the health of Kenny Pickett.
38:24He's a guy they loved.
38:25It's why they traded for him in the spring.
38:27They thought he'd have a legit shot to battle whomever they would bring into that quarterback room.
38:32It ended up being Joe Flacco yet again, and it's going to be an interesting mindset for the next 72 hours.
38:38A lot of speculation with Kenny Pickett missing most of training camp.
38:42Are they going to be able to keep him around, keep four quarterbacks,
38:45which is unorthodox because then you've got to make harder decisions at some of the other positions
38:49and cut somebody maybe that you'd want to keep?
38:52But I think they realize that Kenny Pickett, even though he's not your starter, he still has good value, right?
38:56There's a lot of teams that value him at some point in their roster.
38:59Maybe if there's some injuries across the league at the quarterback position that somebody might come calling.
39:04So possibly keeping him around to maybe have him be the backup if you don't feel great about Dylan or Shadour
39:10or as an opportunity to maybe get something from him in a trade with another team.
39:16Browns have been steadfast in their analysis of their rookies that these are both developmental guys.
39:23They have treated it as such.
39:25Strong again.
39:27Burst for another first down.
39:31I like his explosiveness, by the way.
39:33Yeah, he's seeing the blocking schemes in front of him really, really well.
39:36Tevin Jenkins, the right guard, does a great job getting hip-to-hip with his center.
39:40On the double team, creating a little bit of vertical displacement,
39:44putting that defensive tackle into the lap of the linebacker,
39:47and then allowing Pierre Strong to pick his play, pick his hole.
39:51In the middle, he's going A-gap, and then all of a sudden, boom, he jumps out.
39:53As soon as that linebacker comes downhill, picks up that first down.
39:56I don't know if you salivate more talking about offensive line play or your wagyu beef.
40:00Yeah, it might be the Hall of Fame beef, but it's definitely a tie.
40:02At this point, though, I'm not hungry.
40:04I'm just hungry for some more old line play, baby.
40:06Let's go.
40:07Gabriel, Rose, hits Marshall wide open inside.
40:10Inside the 30, inside the 25, and another easy Browns first down.
40:15Dylan Gabriel booting to his left, to his strong throwing arm, doing a great job.
40:20Just making the routine plays look easy, and that's so important for a young quarterback
40:24because you're going to get very few layups in the NFL,
40:27and you've got to be able to deliver when you have those opportunities to give your guy
40:31not only just a catch, but a catchable ball where he can run
40:35and make some yards after catch, just like he did there.
40:38Browns offense moving well.
40:42Backups in for both sides.
40:44The Rams obviously started their backups.
40:46Gabriel turns, throws, overshoots Caden Davis.
40:52Time right now for another sideline report presented by Sugar Dale,
40:55the official bacon of the Cleveland Browns.
40:57Aditi has more on the quarterback situation.
40:58Chris, one more point to add to what you and Joe are saying about Kenny Pickett.
41:03Kevin Stefanski has repeatedly said you cannot say enough good things about him,
41:08and he has repeatedly called him a good teammate.
41:10I can tell you through three games of standing here on the sideline,
41:14whenever whatever quarterback comes over to the sideline,
41:18it's Kenny Pickett who immediately sits down next to him, who has the tablet with him.
41:22We saw it all last week with Dylan Gabriel.
41:23When Tommy Reese was up in the box, it was Kenny Pickett trying to coach him up.
41:28Thank you, Aditi.
41:30Gabriel trying to squeeze it into thrash in the window.
41:33Gets knocked away.
41:36And it'll be third and long for the Browns.
41:38Yeah, Kenny Pickett is about as disappointed as anybody that in late July he pulled up lame
41:43and just was never a true part of this competition from that point forward.
41:47Yeah, I think when the Browns signed him this offseason,
41:50there was every intent to make him the starter.
41:53And then you bring in Flacco, and then you say,
41:54okay, well, let's have them compete, but we feel really good about whoever wins that job.
41:58But like you mentioned, bad hamstring injury earlier in camp,
42:01but never really had that opportunity.
42:04Third and ten for the Browns.
42:06Gabriel across the middle, connects.
42:09White Hart gets flipped head over heels, but it's another first down.
42:13Good toughness by one of the guys that's vying for that third tight end role if there is one on this team.
42:20And he's going to walk off with a little bit of a limp.
42:23And with that, the Browns are in the red zone presented by Milkbone.
42:26Milkbone bringing more dog to the dog pound.
42:29Great job by Gabriel bouncing back there.
42:31Two misfires at the beginning of that first down series and comes back on third down when you have to be big.
42:38If you want to be a big-time quarterback in the NFL, you've got to make those plays on third down.
42:43Finding the window, delivering a catchable ball.
42:46Marshall picks his way forward to about the ten.
42:50Not much there.
42:52So how would you assess the play of the two rookie quarterbacks so far?
42:56They've both been very impressive, I would say.
42:59And it has not looked like the moment was too big for them.
43:02Which so many times, I mean, having a billion rookie quarterbacks,
43:05you see them in practice.
43:06They're doing good stuff.
43:07If you feel like they're making progress, all of a sudden they go out there in the game
43:10and they lock up because it is a big deal when you're playing in the NFL.
43:14I don't care what program you came from.
43:16This is a different level of pressure.
43:18This is a different level of reading the defense and decision-making.
43:21And both those guys have shown very cool, calm poise when they're back there at quarterback.
43:26Gabriel looking in and out of the hands of Gage Larvedan,
43:30who's had an outstanding camp.
43:32Could have had it at about the five.
43:35Instead, it'll be third and eight.
43:36Brown's running just short passing concepts here.
43:40A bunch of stick routes, which like quick out here by Larvedan.
43:43He uses the speed cut, so instead of making a hard 90-degree angle,
43:47he's just kind of bending that with speed,
43:49giving the quarterback great opportunity to throw the ball.
43:52And I like Dylan Gabriel just being decisive on that concept,
43:55just getting the ball out of his hands quick, get it to your playmaker.
43:57Unfortunately, Jumari, or sorry, that was Gage Larvedan,
44:01lets the ball slip right through his fingers.
44:03Third and eighth.
44:04Gabriel retreats.
44:05Rolls left.
44:06He's got some space.
44:07He throws incomplete.
44:09He was looking for thrash in the corner of the end zone and couldn't quite get it done.
44:16So the Browns have to settle for a field goal attempt.
44:20Browns get a little bit of pressure there from the right tackle,
44:23getting pushed into the quarterback.
44:24But Dylan Gabriel does a great job recognizing it, escaping the pocket.
44:28But I don't love the decision to throw the ball.
44:30That was not really much of a window to be able to throw it towards the sideline.
44:35I would have loved to see Dylan Gabriel use those wheels
44:37and try to get himself into the end zone.
44:39Well, let's remember, he was nursing a hamstring earlier this camp.
44:43Just got cleared last week to return to team.
44:45And then the game.
44:46The field goal is good by Dustin Hopkins.
44:53And the Browns have yet another scoring drive.
44:55This one courtesy of their third-round rookie, Dylan Gabriel.
44:59It's 10-0.
45:02Remember to kick off.
