00:00Seattle ended a long losing streak in this rivalry late last season against San Francisco down in the Bay.
00:06Niners won the toss, deferred to the second half.
00:09Off we go here with week one.
00:12And the Seahawks will give it the new touchback rule if you've been watching football throughout the weekend.
00:17Today means they'll start at the 35.
00:19And thus begins Sam Darnold's time with the Seahawks.
00:23Had that dream season last year with the Vikings.
00:25Proved that he could do it in the NFL.
00:27Now Greg tries to prove that it was no fluke.
00:31And I think the biggest thing for Sam coming into this year is you don't have to recreate all of the magic of last year.
00:37And I think it's unreasonable to expect any starting quarterback who's coming off a 14-win season to just assume it's going to happen again.
00:45Let alone in a new place with a new coordinator and obviously a completely new offense.
00:49So I think early in the season, Clint Kubiak, get him comfortable, find the elements of what made him successful, and make sure they're present in this Seattle offense.
00:59From the 35, they begin with a pass play and a threaded needle over the middle for a first down to Jackson Smith and Jigba.
01:06Tied a franchise record with 100 catches last year.
01:09And he's got his first already this year.
01:11Well, with the departure of Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf now with the Steelers, Jackson Smith and Jigba, he's going to become the prominent target, the go-to guy in the passing game.
01:24And he operates out of that slot.
01:27No receiver in the league last year was more productive in yards and catches, operating in that slot position.
01:33And first play of the 25 season, they go right to him.
01:35For 18 yards into 49ers territory.
01:38Here's Kenneth Walker, his first touch.
01:41Dives ahead for 4-5.
01:43Stopped by the Amador Lenore.
01:45And it's not just Darnold.
01:47Not the only new face on this offense.
01:49You've got the first-round pick.
01:50Gray Zabel debuting at left guard.
01:52You mentioned Cooper Cup coming up from L.A.
01:54Across the board, this is a different group.
01:56Yeah, and I think what's important to point out here early, especially early in the season,
02:00for any Seattle fan who's accustomed to what they saw last year from an offensive philosophy
02:05you can throw all of that out the window, right?
02:08This is going to be a very different look.
02:10We've got Jalen Milrow in now.
02:12We knew we'd see him.
02:13He's in at quarterback.
02:14He's got a package in this system.
02:16How about this?
02:17Quickly, though, we see him.
02:18On the third play, Milrow crashes ahead.
02:21And the draft pick out of Alabama gets two.
02:23That'll be third and five.
02:25Yeah, well, we knew we'd see him.
02:27And Mike McDonald said they really liked what they've seen from him.
02:30But to finish that previous point, you know, last year it was Geno Smith
02:33in a very pass-heavy offense, no real play action.
02:37The run game was towards the bottom of the league.
02:39Clint Kubiak and this Shanahan type of system, it's going to be under center.
02:43Early first down play action shots.
02:46A very distinct difference from a year ago.
02:52First third down for the Seahawks.
02:54Third and five, facing a blitz.
02:56He got hit as he throws.
02:58Still caught.
02:58But a short game, caught by A.J. Barner,
03:02who had the rookie marquee Siegel all over him.
03:06Got you, St. Yard.
03:07It's fourth and four.
03:08And it looks like the offense is going to stay on the field.
03:12Yeah, just a really nice three-man pick game.
03:14Nick Bosa ends up coming unblocked.
03:17And we're going to keep the offense now on the field.
03:20Go for it on fourth down.
03:21This is going to be fourth left, officially five.
03:32Opening drive of the season for the Seahawks.
03:34This feels like a dummy.
03:35This feels like no snap, no play, no bite.
03:40Delay of game.
03:48Offense.
03:49Five-yard penalty.
03:51It's fourth down.
03:56Yeah, take a look at Warner.
03:57After that first motion.
03:58So you can always tell by the motions.
04:00When the guys go, like, really fast in the pre-snap motion
04:03and the quarterback is real theatric with his points and his cadence,
04:07it's usually a pretty good indicator that they're dressing that up
04:10and they just call it no snap, no play.
04:12They've got some window dressing, and now they bring out the punt team.
04:15Yeah, you're overselling it.
04:17Yeah, they need to just play it cool.
04:19They need to line up in a normal formation,
04:21cut down on the shifts and motions.
04:22From one of the last guy you're going to fool, Sky Moore.
04:26Back to return this punt from Michael Dixon.
04:28Well done inside the 10, one of the NFL's best.
04:32With a flag down back around the line of scrimmage.
04:37The Niners' offense ready to go.
04:40Let's see what this call is.
04:47During the kick, holding by the receiving team, number 27.
04:51The Phillies have the distance to the goal.
04:53First down.
04:54Brock Purdy out of his own end zone.
05:07Dumps it off.
05:09McCaffrey makes the catch.
05:10Gets just a couple.
05:11Devin Witherspoon the tackle, and it has happened fast, hasn't it?
05:15From the 262nd pick of the draft to a $265 million man.
05:21You know, his career arc is pretty unprecedented.
05:24You know, you think back to early on.
05:26All his job was to just almost stay out of the way.
05:28He's the rookie.
05:29He's Mr. Irrelevant.
05:31He's loaded with all pro talent around him.
05:33And then each year, the responsibility of this team
05:36has fallen more and more on his back.
05:38And no more than this year, as you said, $250 million.
05:42You've got to play big-time ball.
05:43Second and seven.
05:44Again from his own end zone.
05:46Runs out of a collapsing pocket.
05:48Then gets thrown down.
05:49He got a short gain, and already a third down coming up
05:52for the San Francisco offense.
05:54It just wasn't the same last year.
05:56They had key injuries.
05:57They were playing from behind more.
05:59They're trying to reset back to what we've always seen this year.
06:02Yeah, well, we've mentioned him a few times.
06:03But Christian McCaffrey is the cog that makes this entire Shanahan system work.
06:09They can use him out of the backfield.
06:10He's a man nightmare.
06:11It makes defensive coordinators spend a lot of time
06:14figuring out what coverages are you comfortable deploying
06:17against this 49ers offense.
06:19But if McCaffrey's not in the game, all of that changes.
06:27Third and four.
06:28Purdy to throw again.
06:29He's got Kittle wide open, and George Kittle's got a first down.
06:3431 years old, and talking to everybody around the 49ers,
06:37he is as much in his prime as he's ever been.
06:40Yeah, you know, as he's gotten older, he almost looks like he's gotten faster.
06:44You're going to see he just runs a little slot corner.
06:46We used to call him a little bend seven, and the ball is out on time,
06:50and it's in rhythm.
06:51And if McCaffrey's 1A, Kittle's 1B.
06:55I mean, these two guys are so unique.
06:57They're fit for Shanahan's offense, both run and pass.
07:02They play their position as well as anybody in this entire league.
07:08Press set of downs from the 19.
07:10Here's McCaffrey.
07:12Spins his way ahead for a few.
07:14We got stopped by Julian Love, part of this Seahawks defense
07:17that's the biggest reason for excitement around this team.
07:20They were one of the best defenses in the league down the stretch last year.
07:23No doubt.
07:24They finished the year that back last eight games of the season, the second half.
07:27It feels like that post-buy win against San Francisco.
07:31You and I were there for it.
07:32Kind of propelled them down the stretch, and obviously they didn't make the playoffs,
07:36but after winning ten games, the question I have is,
07:39is this the return to an elite, high-level Seattle defense?
07:43That's what we all know.
07:44That was the era that I played in.
07:46Defensive football was made here in Seattle.
07:48Can this unit do it again?
07:50McCaffrey again couldn't get started.
07:52Dropped in the backfield.
07:53One of the new additions right there.
07:55That's the rookie, Nick Eamon-Warri, out of South Carolina,
07:59who they traded up the draft with matchups like this in mind.
08:02Absolutely.
08:03When you have to play this style, there's such a question about,
08:06okay, so 21 personnel, they've got Juszczyk, they've got Kittle,
08:09they've got two wide receivers in McCaffrey.
08:11There is a huge element of how do I defend them,
08:14and it looks like now he's down, which would be a nightmare start.
08:20I mean, are you kidding me?
08:21He makes his first tackle in the NFL and gets hurt.
08:24You know, but finish that point.
08:25You've got to hope that he gets up and he's okay.
08:28And Mike McDonald said it was not by chance that they drafted him.
08:32They said when you have to play the types of offenses within our division
08:35and across the league that we do, guys like him and that versatility,
08:39they just bring so much to the table.
08:41That's hope coming out.
08:44Boy, the Seattle crowd revved up, bottled up energy,
08:48trying to reestablish this home field advantage.
08:58Pertie floats one, Pearsall's wide open.
09:04Ricky Pearsall, 25 yards, tackled by Kobe Bryant, first down San Francisco.
09:11Just watch the timing.
09:13Pearsall doesn't even have his head turned around yet,
09:15and this ball's already 10 yards in the air,
09:17and that's what allows that ball to get up and down in front of the safety.
09:22Kobe Bryant, that's the anticipation that Brock Pertie talked to me.
09:25He said, last year, I thought I had to make every play.
09:28I looked around the huddle, and I was missing some of my guys.
09:31I want to get back.
09:32What do you say?
09:32I want to be a machine.
09:33Just execute the system that Kyle Shanahan draws up.
09:37Off play action here.
09:39Floats one for Pearsall again.
09:40Perfect toss, and Pearsall for a dozen more.
09:45So Debo goes to Washington, still waiting for IU to come back from the knee issue.
09:49Ricky Pearsall, a guy that a lot of people are thinking has a chance to have a big year.
09:54Absolutely.
09:54And this is Shanahan's system at its finest.
09:57It's hard play action, and then they're going to run against the grain,
10:01and Pearsall just outruns the linebacker.
10:03So all week in practice, that play is covered,
10:06but the speed of Pearsall and the touch in anticipation of Pertie, he throws him open.
10:12But a huge finish the last year.
10:13Good start to this year.
10:15Back to the air.
10:17Pertie jump through.
10:18Almost intercepted by Ernest Jones.
10:21Throws behind Brian Robinson, and Ernest Jones, one of the guys that helped change this defense,
10:27helped him turn the corner last year, makes a play.
10:29They think back to prior to that bye week, they turned a lot of things over at that linebacker front.
10:35Tyrese Knight at the time was a rookie, now in his second year as a starter, and Ernest Jones,
10:40he became the green dot, he was the leader, he made all the communication checks.
10:44Mike McDonald credits getting that second level, that linebacker level right last year,
10:49as a big spark for their turnaround down the stretch.
10:55Robinson with his first touch as a 49er, got toppled in the backfield by Derek Hall,
11:00stumbled ahead for one, and it's third and nine.
11:02Okay, so I think this series, Joe, is very reminiscent of what Mike McDonald wants to be
11:10as a defensive-minded coach, right?
11:12It's bend but don't break.
11:13You see the two high safety shells.
11:16He's going to give up some yards.
11:17They want to force third and pass to dial up their pressure game.
11:21They want to win in the red zone and take the ball away.
11:23They're not worried about how much you move the ball up and down the field.
11:27That is what his system is based upon.
11:30And again, two high safeties, umbrella coverage, and they'll play everything top-down.
11:3649ers have already converted two third downs on this drive.
11:39Purdy throws incomplete, and this time Seattle's defense comes up with a stop,
11:44but a late flag flies, and this drive's going to continue
11:47with what looks like it'll be roughing the passer.
12:00I'd be curious who they'd call it on.
12:02Personal foul, roughing the passer.
12:05Defense number 99.
12:06It's a 15-yard penalty.
12:08Automatic goes down.
12:10Yeah, so I think Demarcus Lawrence, number zero, I think he did a nice job pulling up.
12:15You see Leonard Williams, he comes from behind
12:17and kind of gives that blow to the side of Purdy's helmet.
12:20And that's tough.
12:24I mean, there is contact by the letter of the law.
12:26Is it forcible, Lawrence?
12:27That's the question, right?
12:29Is that forcible contact?
12:30It looked to me like the three Seahawk defenders pulled up.
12:34But listen, it doesn't take very much effort by Leonard Williams.
12:38He gives you a 20% bump.
12:40It's a big man.
12:42It's forcible.
12:42That's a big man.
12:43It doesn't take very much, regardless of the intent.
12:466'5", 3'10", guy coming off a monster season.
12:49But his first time he gets his name called this year, it's a drive-extending penalty.
12:55Third, third down that they convert inside the 25 of the first and 10.
13:03McCaffrey back in a running back.
13:08He's got it.
13:10To the 20.
13:12Let's check in with Pam for an injury report.
13:14Yeah, Joe, just keeping an eye on Nick Imanwari.
13:17He went in and out of the 10s.
13:19He came out.
13:20He tried to run.
13:21He has since headed back to the locker room.
13:24We're waiting on an official injury report.
13:26But you saw from the pictures, it didn't look good with his ankle.
13:30All right, Pam.
13:32The rookie they're so high on and was already going to have to play an important role in this game.
13:37They'll be without, at least for the moment.
13:39Worth noting now, Devin Witherspoon.
13:42He is a superstar in the making.
13:44He's now sliding into that nickel role.
13:46Fake to McCaffrey.
13:47Throw for Kittle.
13:49And he's got it.
13:51George Kittle hangs on despite the hit from Julian Love.
13:56Well, the old announcer's jinx.
13:58You highlight a guy.
13:59And listen, we're going to talk a lot about Witherspoon.
14:01You see me.
14:01He's having a hard time getting set.
14:03He's looking at Julian Love, figuring out who he's got.
14:05And just that late reaction off the snap.
14:10Kittle does a nice job flattening that route so he can catch it in front of Love and run away from Witherspoon.
14:16Seahawks killer through the years.
14:18George Kittle already with his second catch of this drive.
14:21First and goal for San Francisco on a drive that started back at its own five.
14:28Flag down.
14:31And a false start.
14:32Before the snap.
14:34Goal start.
14:35Offense number 89.
14:37It's a five-yard penalty.
14:39First down.
14:39That's on Luke Farrell, the new tight end.
14:45Brock Purdy on this opening drive, five for six.
14:48You're talking about the way he's anticipated, trying to get back to playing like a machine.
14:52He said that he thought that he let the injuries kind of get in his head last year, tried to make up for him.
14:58Also, he said a lot of the guys who felt like were guilty of this, trying to get back to the Super Bowl every single play,
15:04instead of just making the next right play.
15:09To try to get back to that discipline mindset that helped him get here.
15:14McCaffrey bumped at the line.
15:16It's a short game.
15:17It's the new Seahawk to Marcus Lawrence with the tackle.
15:21Yeah, it was interesting.
15:21When we talked to Kyle Shanahan, he made that exact point you just mentioned.
15:25He said, you know, coming off the difficult loss the previous year to Kansas City in the Super Bowl,
15:30I think all of our veterans looked around and said, every day is the Super Bowl.
15:34Every game is about winning the Super Bowl.
15:36He said, this youth movement has kind of recalibrated us a little bit.
15:40They've seen a lot of veterans walk out the door.
15:42A lot of youth walk in.
15:43Now it's just about, let's win this practice.
15:46Let's win this game.
15:47Let's just get back to being the 49er team in contention every year.
15:52Purdy steps up.
15:53Purdy tucks it.
15:55Runs inside the 10.
15:56Down to the 5.
15:57Around the block from Pearsall.
15:59And it's third and goal.
16:00Now there's a lot of ways to talk about Brock Purdy over the years.
16:06The anticipation, his development as a drop back passer.
16:09You see him here in the gun.
16:11But probably the thing we don't give him enough credit for is he's a really good scrambler.
16:16You know, no one's going to confuse him for Lamar Jackson, but he's crafty.
16:19He can both work the pocket and activate himself as a runner downfield
16:23to put them in a lot better third down situation here.
16:27Third and goal.
16:27They're going to convert every third down on this drive.
16:30Three of them.
16:33Trying to go the distance on the opening drive.
16:36There's Kittle.
16:37He's got it.
16:39Niners go 95 on their first drive of the season.
16:46I love you.
16:47Well, you mentioned Kittle has been the Seahawks killer over the year.
16:56Over the years.
16:57Just a really nice design.
16:59You see Juwan Jennings.
17:00He runs an inside release.
17:02And that little skip by Kittle, right?
17:04That's the nuance of the route to just let Jennings run interference.
17:08He gets in his wake and runs the speed out.
17:11You know, you see a young tight end coming up running 100 miles an hour off the line.
17:16And that's the craftiness that is Kittle.
17:19And he couldn't have started his season any better.
17:22Jerry Rice, T.O., George Kittle.
17:26That's the list of the top receivers.
17:28Pretty good company.
17:2949ers history.
17:30And he is here for the long haul.
17:33Back on that four-year extension.
17:35Jake Moody adds the extra point.
17:37And the Niners are on the board first.
17:39Converted four third downs on this drive.
17:41One of them, thanks to this penalty.
17:43And a few plays later, they're in the end zone in a familiar way.
17:47So much has changed with these Niners.
17:49But this has stayed the same.
17:51Purdy to Kittle.
17:52Hoffman Rowland in 2025.
17:55Ivan San Francisco strikes first.
18:00Trying to bounce back from that 6-11 year last year.
18:04Perennial contender.
18:05And we're going to be wide open in the NFC West division this year.
18:10And you're getting these two teams going head-to-head to open the year.
18:13Good early test on both sides.
18:17There's a chip shot for Moody into the landing zone.
18:20Cody White on the return to the 30.
18:26And we look back at the touchdown.
18:28All right.
18:28So you can see Juwan Jennings.
18:29He's off on the right side of your screen.
18:30But watch the patience in the little skip release by Kittle.
18:34See the little hop?
18:36That's what allows Jennings to run that.
18:37They call that a seam release.
18:39Just a little inside release off the line.
18:41And this was pre-snap.
18:43Just that subtle glance over to his right.
18:45Make sure he's got that two-on-two matchup.
18:47And he knows from depth that is a difficult route for any safety in this league to defend.
18:53Especially against George Kittle.
18:58First play of the drive is Zach Charbonnet with a head of steam.
19:02And Charbonnet, who made a good impression when Kenneth Walker was out last year, has six or seven yards.
19:07So, you know, we talked about it a little bit, the change in this offense.
19:11Third different coordinator they've had in three years.
19:13From Shane Waldron to Ryan Grubb and now Clint Kubiak.
19:16And the question that Mike McDonald had to ask wasn't just, how do we score more points?
19:20But how do I find a coordinator and a system that complements who we are?
19:24Yeah, and I think when you look back to last year and to Ryan Grubb, first time coaching in the NFL, nothing aligned.
19:29The run game, the pass game, there was a lot of misalignment.
19:32And I think going out and getting Clint Kubiak to marry those two was a big part of the decision.
19:36Charbonnet again.
19:37Lowers the shoulder for a first down.
19:39Time for our first game break.
19:42Hello, Carissa Thompson.
19:44Hello, Joe.
19:44So the Bucs were down three with a minute left.
19:46Baker Mayfield finds Emeka Abuka.
19:49This one puts the Bucs in front by three.
19:52Falcons had a chance to tie you guys but missed the field goal.
19:55Bucs win 23-20.
19:56And I just want to say congratulations to Cam Oliver on the induction into the sports broadcasting Hall of Fame.
20:02Yes, a legend and a penalty at the end of this play.
20:12D'Amador Lenore.
20:17Well, D'Amador Lenore had a lot of interesting conversations, a lot of interesting tweets and posts in his interviews all offseason.
20:23Him and DK Metcalf used to have a pretty heated relationship on the field.
20:28And he said now it's going to turn to Jackson, Smith, and Jigba.
20:31That time it just takes a little too far.
20:33Metcalf out.
20:33Lock it out.
20:34More than 50% of the receiving yards from last year gone.
20:38They're having to replace more than any offense.
20:40Darno folks on Smith and Jigba's loose.
20:44Jackson, Smith, and Jigba gets behind the rookie Upton Stout for 22.
20:48Again, working out of the inside, in the slot.
20:53It's just a little wheel route.
20:56Look, he sells like he's going to the flat and then turns it up the sideline.
21:00The anticipation and the touch.
21:02We talked Brock Purdy did it on his opening drive, throwing guys open, putting the air on the ball there by Sam Darnold.
21:09What's allowed Smith and Jigba to run away from Stout and run underneath the ball.
21:14Really well done.
21:15Charbonnet again.
21:16He's going to slice his way through.
21:19Pads cracking as he runs through Marquis Siegel.
21:23He got five.
21:24So the first step, Greg, was finding a coordinator in a system.
21:27And then it was finding a quarterback to be the guy to pair with.
21:32We'll talk about that in a second.
21:33You're checking on this injured player.
21:34It's Fred Warner.
21:36A key guy on this San Francisco defense, which so much new.
21:42Veteran that they can rely on right here.
21:44As they check on Warner, we'll take a break.
21:55This is obviously a huge deal for a defense that already has seven new starters.
21:59Part of the reason they felt like they could do that is because they had guys like Fred Warner, leading tackler all seven seasons.
22:06He's been in the NFL with the 49ers, but he leaves the game with an injury here.
22:12Hard to tell exactly what happened.
22:14It's good to see him be able to walk off.
22:16Yeah.
22:16I mean, really, with all the people that have left the building, kind of the mass exodus of vets on the defensive side of the ball.
22:22It's Bosa, Warner, Diamador, Lenore.
22:25They've got one guy left at each side of the ball on each level, and they've got to carry that load.
22:30So they've got a bunch of new guys, but they also have established that core, extended these guys in the offseason after they had other extensions the prior year.
22:38Ayuk, Trent Williams, and trying to piece it all together with the guys that they've labeled as the core, and all these new pieces they're trying to tackle me.
22:48Seahawks on the move here, second and five.
22:51Kenneth Walker's back in and running back.
22:56He's got it.
22:57He's got a hole.
22:59He's got close to a first down.
23:02So this is a great example.
23:04When we talked earlier, prior to the break, we said, you know, it's going to look so much different than the grub offense from last year.
23:11All right, so what does that mean?
23:12Last year, pretty much a non-existent run game.
23:15Everything was out of the gun on first and second down.
23:18It was predominant pass.
23:20With Kubiak, it's going to be more downhill run.
23:22That inside-outside zone.
23:24And just get that run and pass game tied together.
23:30They're a little bit short there, so they sneak it.
23:32And now get the first down.
23:34And then the final piece, after they got Kubiak, they said, okay, what quarterback fits this style of system?
23:43A great play-action passer, someone who's accurate and can throw the ball downfield.
23:47And obviously that was Sam Darnold.
23:49That's what he did last year under Kevin O'Connell, a very similar type of system.
23:53He was the most accurate and the most effective downfield passer in the entire league in his single season in Minnesota.
24:00And I think a lot of Seahawks fans are sitting here saying, well, which guy are we going to get?
24:04Are we going to get the guy that was in the wilderness for the first six or seven years of his NFL career?
24:08Or the guy that was in the MVP conversation last year?
24:11They don't necessarily need him to be that guy, though.
24:14First down and 10 from the 11, back in the hands of Charbonnet, and he's to the six.
24:20San Francisco still without Fred Warner.
24:26Tatum Bethune is in form as his first quarter winds down.
24:32Niners go 95 yards on their first possession of the year.
24:36The Seahawks try to respond as we go to the second.
24:40Week one in Seattle.
24:42Back in a moment.
24:43News for the 49ers.
24:45Fred Warner promptly back in the game here.
24:48Seahawks have a second down at the seven-yard line.
24:51Second down and six.
24:52Can't get a first down without scoring.
24:59Toss to Charbonnet.
25:00Straight ahead.
25:01Inside the five.
25:02Down to the three.
25:04Third and two for the Seahawks.
25:06Man, you look on the San Francisco side, on the defensive side of the ball, Robert Sala,
25:11former head coach of the Jets.
25:13He's now back coordinating this defense.
25:15And besides trying to get all these young guys caught up to speed, and we've covered that
25:19a little bit here early on, one of their biggest issues last year, 31st in the league in red
25:24zone defense.
25:25If you're going to have a lot of young guys now, two areas, take the ball away and be
25:29really good in the red zone, you can mask a lot of other issues.
25:33Third and short.
25:34Back to Charbonnet.
25:35He got hit in the backfield and barely made it back to the line of scrimmage.
25:39Dee Winters taking over for Dre Greenlaw, making a play right there.
25:44And it's fourth down and two.
25:47Yeah, take a watch.
25:48Take a look here at Winters.
25:49Watch how fast he plays downhill.
25:53The double teams are not able to get down, so they teach those linebackers, if you play
25:57fast downhill, it gets the double teams off the defensive linemen.
26:01Now important, teams are going to be going for fourth down more and more, Joe.
26:05The kickoff rule, following a field goal, the touchback being on the 35, changes the math
26:11here on fourth and goal.
26:12Darnold, scanning, throwing, end zone for Cup, but incomplete.
26:18A flag flies.
26:20Cup had a step on Stout, and the flags fly out.
26:24Yeah, I thought that was pretty clear.
26:29Upton Stout, one of those young rookie defensive players taken in this year's draft by San Francisco.
26:37We've already gone after him a couple times.
26:39Defense number 20.
26:41The ball will be placed at the one-yard line, his first down.
26:43And it's first and goal at the one after that penalty on Stout.
26:48Got beat for a 25-yard catch by Smith and Jimbo earlier on this drive, and now call for this penalty.
26:54So, just part of being a young defensive back, when the ball's in the air, they tend to panic
26:59a little bit.
27:00Instead of getting their eyes around to find the ball, they react off the movement of the
27:05receiver.
27:05And you can see pretty clearly, just grabs the arm of Cooper Cup, and pretty easy call
27:12there.
27:12Got all the big guys in here on first down and goal.
27:17Charbonnet, touchdown Seattle!
27:30They go to the ground for their first touchdown of the year, and a quick response from the Seahawks.
27:35Yeah, so now we've seen each team take the ball the length of the field and have their
27:39drives kept alive by a defensive penalty.
27:42So, it's a really nice drive there.
27:45First one of the Sam Darnold era.
27:48I know Clint Kubiak and everyone up in that Seattle sideline and box are going to take a
27:53big, deep breath now and settle into this one.
27:56Well, Seahawks fans studied Kubiak's history at all.
27:59They're going to be really excited about how this year should begin, given what happened
28:02last year in New Orleans.
28:03Seahawks fans 91 points the first two games.
28:06They're looking like the greatest offense in NFL history.
28:09They scored on their first 15 possessions last year in New Orleans to start the year.
28:1311 touchdowns.
28:14He's only one for two today, so a little slow start.
28:16That's going to happen on the 16th drive.
28:18They just stopped trying.
28:19Charbonnet.
28:19For the Seahawks, and as advertised, as promised, it has been run heavy so far.
28:2411 out of their first 14 plays have been on the ground.
28:31Moore and Garendo back to receive this kick from Myers.
28:33And it is a touchback.
28:37Double-digit win campaigns.
28:39He's had four double-digit loss campaigns.
28:42The good news for 49ers fans is that the last two times he's had double-digit loss campaigns,
28:47he's followed that with deep runs for the Super Bowl in 19, to the NFC Championship game in 22.
28:52A juggle and a catch here from Bryan Robinson, able to get around the edge and lower the shoulder for four.
29:00Well, coming off of last season, Kyle Shanahan had all the veterans over to his house,
29:04said, we're going to have dinner, we're going to have some serious conversations about what went on.
29:08He said, number one, I didn't see the same kind of passion as last year.
29:12Number two, so much of next season is going to hinge on our ability to bring those young guys along,
29:18and the fastest way to make sure they hit the ground running is for you guys,
29:22you veterans, to establish that old passion, that old workman-like energy that we had every year prior to last year.
29:29Set the tone.
29:31Veterans working like rookies.
29:34Shovel pass for Kittle.
29:35He got planted.
29:37Leonard Williams was waiting.
29:41Yeah, so it was so interesting listening to Kyle kind of take us through that off-season conversation,
29:46the meeting at his house, and I think what everyone maybe doesn't pay enough respect to is
29:51it is so hard in the NFL to be good for sustained periods of time.
29:56Roster turnover, your coaches get poached,
29:58and then there's a level of expectation both inside and outside the building
30:02that it's Super Bowl or bust.
30:04And he said, listen, every day we came to work, all we thought about was the Super Bowl,
30:09and it wasn't healthy, it wasn't good for us.
30:11Let's get back to just winning the moment.
30:12Heardy on third down, retreating in trouble, heaving one up for grabs,
30:18but out of bounds and incomplete, and finally Seattle comes up with a third down stop.
30:25Jaron Reed applied the pressure right there.
30:28And I think that's going to be one of the biggest areas of impact for this Seattle defense.
30:33We've talked about the linebackers, we've talked about some of the pieces on the back end,
30:37but this defensive line, Leonard Williams, Jaron Reed, Boye Mafe, his ability to rush off the edge,
30:43DeMarcus Lawrence, who's been a multiple-time pro bowler in his time in Dallas,
30:47coming over in free agency.
30:48They're deep, they're talented, and in this McDonald scheme,
30:53it has the tendency of bringing out the best in guys.
30:55Thomas Morstead, 17th season in the NFL.
30:58Torrey Horton making his NFL debut.
31:00Back to return this.
31:01Got around the first man.
31:02Got to the 30 with a flag down.
31:04flag back at the 12-yard line after Seattle's defense comes up with a stop there.
31:14Delivers the three and out.
31:18Sean Hockey Lee, our referee today.
31:20Number 33 of the kicking team went out of bounds voluntarily during the kick.
31:34This five-yard penalty will be added to the end of the play.
31:37It's first down.
31:38Time out.
31:41Sam Donald and the Seahawks offense ready to go back to work in a 7-7 game after the defense does its part.
31:48As different as they can from last year.
31:53Heavy ground game so far.
31:55Kenneth Walker to begin this drive.
31:57Nothing there.
31:58Cracked in the backfield by Fred Warner.
32:00We've kind of laid out the picture of, okay, what's going to look different?
32:05Why does it look different?
32:06And that was the 15th snap of today's game for the Seattle offense.
32:10And it's the 11th time that Sam Donald got underneath center.
32:14Last year, it was about one out of every five.
32:17Around 20% towards the bottom of the league.
32:19The other big difference.
32:21Last year, it was pretty much Geno and Shotgun with three wide receivers in the back.
32:25But today, they've already run seven different personnel groupings in only 15 plays.
32:32Now, they're one of five teams to run the ball less than 40% of the time last year.
32:37Almost all runs so far in this game.
32:39As that throw is behind A.J. Barner.
32:41Bryce Huff coming off of the edge, applying the pressure there.
32:44Third and 12.
32:45I remember Bryce Huff had that big year with the Jets under Salah.
32:55He signed a big free agent deal in Philadelphia.
32:58Didn't really work out.
32:59He was a scratch in the Super Bowl kind of the whole time down the stretch.
33:03And now finds himself in San Francisco back with Salah.
33:07And they're trying to find some of that magic he showed as a pass rusher.
33:10Back with Salah and with Bosa.
33:12How about those two guys together coming off opposite ends?
33:15Trying to wreak some havoc on his third down.
33:18Blitz is picked up, giving Darnold time.
33:20But he throws incomplete for Smith and Jigba.
33:22Coverage from Lenore.
33:24Fourth down.
33:28Yeah, D'Amador and Lenore.
33:29Probably the one that doesn't get enough conversation and enough respect.
33:33He's another one.
33:34He signed a big extension.
33:36One of the more highly paid defensive backs in the league.
33:39And his story is awesome.
33:40Came in as a low draft pick.
33:42Kind of just earned his respect in practice.
33:44And Shanahan tells a great story about how he kind of got him in trouble with his physicality.
33:48One offseason.
33:49And he said, this guy's going to be a good fit for us in San Fran.
33:52So his toughness comes from being one of nine.
33:55Or one of 12 in his family.
33:56He's the ninth kid.
33:57So he's always punching up.
33:59This one's return for a gain of six by Sky Moore.
34:0358-yard booming punt there from Michael Dixon.
34:0649ers go back on offense in a 7-7 game after this.
34:14Christian McCaffrey, the player of the year two years ago.
34:17But then just four games last year.
34:19The Achilles.
34:19He comes back from that.
34:20Hurts his knee.
34:21And this, of course, is a different team when he's on the field.
34:25He's got it here.
34:32And so much of the optimism around the offense this year were the reports that he was healthy again.
34:37Motivated coming off and missing as much time as he did last year.
34:40It was a dark few hours around camp on Thursday when he reported his calf hurting.
34:45They went through tests.
34:46He looked like it was like, oh boy, this looks like it could be a problem.
34:49Kyle Shanahan's thinking, my gosh, how long are we going to be without this guy?
34:52Turns out it was just a scare.
34:54He's in there with the calf.
34:55And again, it's a changing player right here for everything for San Francisco.
35:00Not much doing so far.
35:05He's got it again on second and four with a flag down.
35:08Room for McCaffrey, but a flag as he gets to the 29.
35:12Stopped by Jaron Reed.
35:24Offside, defense number 58.
35:27This penalty's declined as the play results in a first down.
35:31So Derek Hall is lined up offsides there.
35:33They'll decline the penalty, go with the first down run for McCaffrey.
35:38To kind of go back to the conversation around McCaffrey, what he brings to this offense in the mind
35:44of Kyle Shanahan between Trent Williams, Juszczyk, and Kittle, he can use those three guys in
35:50his scheme to create holes before contact.
35:53What they missed last year was the yards after contact.
35:55That's the beauty of McCaffrey.
35:57Under pressure, Purdy got sacked.
36:00Julian Love on the safety blitz.
36:02Drops him for a loss of 12.
36:12All right, so this is really hard.
36:13So McCaffrey has him.
36:15If he sees it early enough, he can do what they call abort the fake.
36:18But it's a left side fake, and then he's got to come all the way back over.
36:23That's just a really difficult assignment for McCaffrey.
36:27In a perfect world, something's got to tempt Purdy.
36:32To say, hey, this guy's coming, redirect the protection, and take him off of McCaffrey's assignment.
36:38Second and 22 after that sack.
36:41Drop play.
36:42McCaffrey trying to get some of it back.
36:45Spins his way to the 22.
36:49And when he's been healthy, there's aided coming into this year.
36:52But he and the Niners with an uphill task here, third and 16.
36:55Time out, San Francisco.
37:07And the crowd is saying, yeah, we did that.
37:09We caused that time out.
37:11Kyle Shanahan told us this week the fastest way to go up there and lose a game is to not be ready to handle that crowd.
37:17Yeah, I could tell you some horror stories of coming up here in my career, playing in this stadium, playoff games, regular season games.
37:24Everything in Seattle, every game you play feels like a night game primetime playoff NFC championship.
37:31Like, it is that kind of environment.
37:33We used to go our entire walkthroughs, all of our, you know, pre-practice stuff, and we would do everything with non-verbal communication.
37:41It was signals.
37:42It was hand gestures.
37:43Even in the huddle, face mask to face mask.
37:46When this place is rocking, you can't hear the words out of the quarterback's mouth.
37:51On third and 16, they hand it off.
37:53Get what they can with McCaffrey across the 30.
37:57They'll settle for the problem, which makes it look like a misprint when you look and see that they were three and six last year.
38:02You figure they're three and six here, they're terrible.
38:05No, this is a 10-win team that went three and six in maybe the best home field advantage place in the NFL.
38:11And they've got to get back to this being a huge home field advantage.
38:14I know it's important to Mike McDonald.
38:16It's important to this entire organization and obviously important to these fans who take great pride in it.
38:22Did a deep dive into it and how to fix it.
38:25Everything from their eating routines to how they warm up pre-game.
38:28The biggest thing, the most quantifiable thing that they've found in that deep dive is the slow starts.
38:33They had to find a better way to get off to good starts.
38:35As Trent Williams limps his way off of the field and 49ers fans are saying, not again with this.
38:41Already had two of their key guys leave the game with injuries.
38:44Warner is back, but now it's Williams leaving.
38:47And it's Morstead on to punt again.
38:49Seahawks go back on offense inside the 15.
39:12Sam Darnold heads out there.
39:13What we got here is this like, this is beyond tech mobile.
39:17This is like PS1 level as he chooses his team.
39:212018 didn't really choose his team.
39:23They chose him.
39:24The Jets drafted him.
39:25Tough position to be in.
39:26Thrown into the fire.
39:27Goes to Carolina.
39:28Then that season in 2023 that not a lot of people talk about.
39:32You know about what happened last year in Minnesota.
39:34But when you ask Sam, he points to that one year in San Francisco with Kyle Shanahan, with Brock Purdy, as transformative for him.
39:41Learning from Shanahan.
39:43Learning from Purdy, he said.
39:45The way that he just kind of looks at the game like a point guard and doesn't try to do too much.
39:50Kenneth Walker in the flat.
39:52Broke a tackle and got five.
39:54And that's the mentality that Darnold said he took with him to Minnesota last year.
39:57Yeah, and so much about quarterback success in this league for the vast majority of young quarterbacks coming out is fit, situation, and the personnel around you.
40:06And that's easier said than done.
40:08So you go back to that 23 season when he takes a backseat in San Francisco to learn from Shanahan and Purdy and kind of reset his career.
40:16And last year, the fit, the coordinator, you know, the play caller in Kevin O'Connell, the personnel around him, the scheme.
40:22That's what they're trying to recreate here in Seattle.
40:25Walker got blown up.
40:27Khalia Davis, one of the guys set to get a bigger opportunity this year with a tackle for loss of three.
40:34Yeah, Davis, he just, it's just a simple, just called defeat and wreck the block.
40:39Anthony Bradford, the right guard, he's just going to down block and he just destroys it.
40:44I mean, defensive line, they start every single individual period with just defeat and be violent at the point of attack.
40:51And there's no fancy stunt.
40:53There's no fancy defensive alignment.
40:56That leads us to another conversation, though, about this offensive line for Seattle.
41:01Can they improve?
41:02Darnold drops off the screen.
41:04It's Walker trying to find room.
41:06He gets swung around and dropped.
41:08Dee Winters was there first.
41:10Nick Bosa finished him off.
41:14And Dee Winters, who they're raving about, the improvements he made this offseason,
41:18they think he really is ready to step into those Dre Greenlaw shoes, and he's off to a good start.
41:23So everything in the screen game is the relationship between the frontside lineman and the back.
41:29And you can see Walker is out there so much faster than his center Sundell.
41:35And, like, there's no one in front of him, so he's got to be more patient.
41:38And those linemen have to get out in front of the screen earlier.
41:41Hunter's set to get good field position here.
41:44Line drive punt from Dixon.
41:46Sky Moore.
41:47On the move.
41:48Lost the ball.
41:50Able to get it back and goes out of bounds at the 35.
41:54Line drive punt gets him 52 yards.
41:56And this is such an honor for me.
41:58And look at me.
41:59I'm here on Sunday watching a great game, having a good time, loving life.
42:03Love it.
42:03Started at Fox in 1995 with Patton John.
42:0730 years later, Hall of Famer.
42:107-7 game.
42:12Niners go back to work.
42:13Here's McCaffrey.
42:14Waits for a block to develop.
42:16Skirts to the outside and gets 11 on the first play of the drive.
42:21Trent Williams, by the way, is back in.
42:23So all these little injury scares, putting those aside, he had McCaffrey in practice last week.
42:28He's been good to go.
42:29He had Warner leave and come back.
42:31He had Williams leave and come back.
42:33And 49ers fans are saying, okay, it already feels a little bit different than last year.
42:37Getting these guys back.
42:39I just want to say, yeah, that's all great.
42:41I'm glad everyone's healthy.
42:42Back to Pam.
42:43My favorite part of every week is walking into an NFL stadium and seeing a bunch of grown men
42:47be so excited to see Pam Oliver walk through the security station.
42:52That is the highlight of the week.
42:54She is the best.
42:56Purdy from the 45.
42:57McCaffrey again.
42:58Got six against Witherspoon.
43:00Yeah, they are force-feeding Christian McCaffrey.
43:03It's not hard to do.
43:04So many different ways you can get this guy the ball.
43:08That's the key.
43:09There's a handful of backs in the league.
43:11You talk about how many times can you hand it to him.
43:12With a guy like McCaffrey, it just touches.
43:14Whether it's a screen, whether it's an inside-outside run, whether it's in the passing game out of the backfield,
43:19or as a wide receiver, just get the ball in his hands, in space, yards after catch, yards after contact.
43:28Those were the two biggest elements that took a big dive last year in his absence.
43:33Robinson comes in.
43:34He's got it on a toss.
43:35Can't get away from Leonard Williams.
43:37What a season he had last year.
43:40That had to be the best season across the league that didn't get a lot of hype.
43:43But he had 11 sacks from an interior position to lead the NFL.
43:48Yeah, and it's just they call this a tops.
43:50Both these two defensive linemen are going to stunt because they bring Witherspoon off the edge.
43:55And when you're running this zone-style offense that really both of these teams major in,
44:01it puts so much pressure on these offensive linemen blocking moving targets.
44:06It's very difficult.
44:08And now this is where they want you.
44:10They want them in this all-out third-down pressures.
44:13And bring in a corner in Witherspoon, so they go outside to Jennings right where the blitz came from
44:18and get a first down on Jennings' first catch.
44:21It goes for 14 and extends the drive.
44:23Yeah, this is just so good by Purdy.
44:26Look, they got the backers walked up.
44:28They want everyone to get pulled inside and then bring Witherspoon off the edge.
44:33McCaffrey sees it.
44:35And more importantly, Purdy sees it.
44:37He spits it out there to Jennings and does the rest after the catch.
44:41I mean, that ball is really close to being deflected.
44:44But that's high-level quarterback play, and that's why these guys make the big bucks.
44:50And, you know, we go from him being the surprise guy to last pick of the draft, get his chance, get his contract.
44:56They're now going to lean on him a little bit more.
44:58With that contract, comes in a situation like this where Jennings has in practice,
45:03Ayuk's out, Debo's gone.
45:05You got to be able to lean on your $265 million man, and so far, 11 out of 13.
45:15Victor Robinson.
45:16Looking long.
45:18Stepping up.
45:19He's got used check wide open.
45:21Used check to the 16.
45:23He was given all day to strike downfield for 25.
45:26this is just kyle shanahan going into his bag of tricks so they use the jet motion that holds
45:38use checks gonna block chip and then he's just gonna run a delayed wheel out of the backfield
45:44it just puts so much stress on the coverage the flat defender comes up to guard the guy
45:50they faked it to and that's all use check needs to run his little wheel route downfield
45:55explosive 49ers offense big player to the 16 McCaffrey's back in he's got it hurdles for three
46:03tripped up by Devin Witherspoon
46:05so we showed George Kittle a moment ago we're getting word that Kittle suffered a hamstring
46:13injury and is out he's done for the day wow he took me at opening drive he couldn't have started
46:20his season any better they raved about his camp his conditioning I don't think he missed a single
46:26day of preseason that is a significant blow to a team that just can't seem to avoid these injuries
46:35emptied out on second down Purdy tucks it runs brought Purdy pumps reaches for the spot pulled down by
46:44he's going to get the ball and he's going to get the ball and love see where they spot him here as we get close to the two
46:51minute warning he'll be a little bit short and so we'll come out of the two minute warning with a third down and one in a seven seven game
46:57Niners and Seahawks opening up the season and this NFC West showdown
47:01with a third down and one here for the Niners yeah so I think there's a little gamesmanship here
47:12if you're Kyle Shanahan you have an opportunity to get a fresh set of downs it's third and short
47:17if it's me I'm keeping the ball on the ground picking up a first down because I want to make
47:22sure yes I want to score a touchdown but I want to bleed this clock down Seattle still has three
47:27timeouts left I don't want to give Seattle another possession to score knowing if I'm San Francisco
47:33I come out of the second half getting the ball chance of the old double dip it is McCaffrey
47:39and it's close stacked up right at the line to gain
47:45you've probably seen the new digital measurements across the NFL it's still the humans that spot the
47:53ball and then get the Hawkeye technology to tell you if he's got it or not
48:05and it is enough the first down in a minute thirty the clock runs
48:12so first and goal at the Seattle six
48:15this is an opportunity now to just continue to work the clock what you don't want to do though is be so
48:20worried about the clock that you don't call your best inside the ten red zone play and it's the
48:25best player but he's blown up in the backfield McCaffrey dropped by Lawrence
48:30Murphy was there as well on a timeout taken
48:35timeout Seattle first one used by Mike McDonald game clock to 111 this is the 32nd timeout
48:43when we wrap up this first Rodgers in his Pittsburgh debut 34
48:48unbelievable I mean
48:49I'll tell you I'm a little surprised that I know the Jets lost but pretty impressive
48:53Justin Fields to score 32 on that Steelers defense so that thing was a shootout
49:00second goal pretty looking in zone he'll throw incomplete he got hit by boy a mafia
49:06had a huge season two years ago not as productive last year
49:10flying off of the edge there and force the air and throw to Jenny's third down
49:17I'll tell you what this entire first half Brock Purdy he's faced pressure of his 17 dropbacks
49:25he's been pressured 12 times it's the highest percentage of his entire career
49:31and now he's got no Kittle he's got McCaffrey he's got Juwan Jennings those are clearly his two big
49:38options down here tight in the red zone
49:39given time here coverage tight lofts it into the end zone and incomplete more blue shirts than
49:51white in that corner of the end zone Ernest Jones applied the last pressure
49:55yeah so we've seen now the pressure on Purdy and what it's doing when he sets his drop he's about
50:03right here but now because of the inside pressure he's unable to step up so watch he wants to step up
50:10but there's nowhere to go so everything is a retreat everything is off his back foot and
50:16he mentioned the value of this McDonald defense the stress they put on obviously taking the ball away
50:21and winning in the red zone this bend but don't break it's a really nice red zone stop here by Seattle
50:26Jake Moody's looking for a bounce back here he missed nine of his last 20 tries last season and he
50:32starts this year by doinking one no good the demons of 24 live for Jake Moody
50:41wow point blank wow off the upright i think if you were to ask Jake Moody
50:49you get to go put the ball at whatever yard line and whatever hash you want for your first kick to
50:55kind of exercise the demons of last year where would you want it i think you would put the ball right
51:00there i mean that is at this level nothing's a given that's pretty much close to his that's as
51:07much of a given as it gets at this level after last year went how it did he changed his mechanics like a
51:12huge alteration he went from what he had always done which is a three-step approach to a simpler
51:16two-step approach that a lot of times you'll see veteran kickers do he felt like he was choosing
51:21accuracy reliability over distance but here needing no distance and just reliability
51:28no good with the new mechanics 57 seconds two timeouts they start the drive with a run
51:35and charbonnet gets thrown down by warner after six
51:38this will be see how aggressive kubiak the offensive coordinator that just a little drive starter seeing
51:43if you can pop a run against some of these soft two-minute type shell defenses
51:49you now throw over the middle smithing jibba
51:52now they can go fast they'll take a timeout you see mcdonald he raced down the sideline
52:00the most the most important element of the two-minute drive is the drive starter
52:06so they tried it with the handoff that put him in second and reasonable but look how deep these
52:11safeties are there's so much space in the middle of the field
52:14a very similar type defensive structure for san francisco as we've talked about
52:20with seattle sometimes the middle of the field an area that this san francisco defense always
52:26prided themselves on taking away again one of those issues that arose last year and just very
52:32uncharacteristic of this niner squad smith and jigba 20 yards a catch on three catches so far 35 seconds one
52:40timeout left from the 48 you got a kicker with a big lag and jason meyers
52:47which is man coverage across the board
52:50and he finds somebody to beat it lofty with a double move for smith and jigba again picking
52:55on the rookie stout but the throw wasn't there
52:59they have gone after this guy time and again in this first half
53:03yes right it's actually a really good double move
53:06by smith and jigba i think sam darnold just got rid of this ball a little too soon
53:10you're gonna see he tries to get him on the out and up the little wheel
53:13sam darnold had a really clean pocket
53:18and for whatever reason i think he was just a half tick click
53:21a half click late delivering that ball
53:27ronald in his first half of the seahawks six out of nine
53:29second and ten with 30 seconds looks short lets it rip tight window cooper cut first catches a seahawk
53:40to the 43 he's a little bit short and the seahawks use their last time out
53:48we'll be right back after this message from progressive yeah so now remember seattle's got no timeouts left so if they do decide to throw this ball
53:55it's a mandatory catch and get down
53:59they're gonna run it charbonnet first down so now they gotta unpile the issue with the run game is now
54:04you gotta unpile you're gonna lose a ton of time
54:08trying to get everybody up off the ground gotta imagine he's just gonna clock it
54:12you know the niners are gonna make that really hard to simply get off of the ground 12 seconds no timeouts
54:18time for what yeah so at 12 seconds you're probably right on the fringe of whether or not you can
54:25complete this ball quickly inbounds pick up a few more yards gotta slide you cannot be tackled in this
54:32situation it takes up too much time spotting the ball so of course gotta throw it out of bounds if you can
54:38but if you get caught inbounds slide get down take a look look where everybody's guarding here they're
54:44just defending the sidelines daring them to throw in the middle of the field and a timeout taken by san francisco
54:49it'd be a 56 yarder from right here career long for jason myers is 60 as a few years back
54:55but in the conversation where they are
54:59they'd love to pick up a couple more
55:02the math they're doing in their head right now is can we throw a little inside scene with all the
55:06defenders outside the numbers there's a lot of space inside inside the middle third of the defense
55:11can we get a quick little inside screen catch it run fall down and immediately you're going to see
55:17him put the ball down the referee will come in and touch it and then they've got to clock it
55:22can you do it in 12 seconds i think it's really close
55:26second and 10 12 seconds seahawks trying to take a massive turn here going into the half after the
55:32miss from moody look at the difference in the coverage now they're up here tight and darnell's
55:36going to run it right side get what they can to make this some more manageable attempts it's really
55:41smart it's man coverage so san francisco took a timeout and then they said all right we don't like
55:47where we are we're giving up a lot of space so you'll see all the defenders came up and played man
55:52coverage and diamador lenore just runs with the receiver a little quarterback sweep and
55:59feel like you're playing pony league that's really good that's just great situational football
56:05clint kubiak they work these scenarios all day long
56:10exactly the right call for that coverage of san francisco jason meyers from this distance last year
56:15was seven of eight
56:19from 48 yards it is right down the middle and not hard to find the difference in this first half
56:27the hidden hand in the nfl special teams the miss from point blank for jake moody
56:33the make from 48 from jason meyers and just again go back to right on the plus side of the two-minute
56:39warning before the moody miss we said how important it was for san francisco to not only score you can
56:45see the little doink here to not only score but knowing you get the ball back in the second half don't give
56:51seattle another possession and just that's the little things and again it's early in the season
56:58it's situational ball but again there's a lot of game left to be played in the second half but
57:04you got the ball into the two-minute warning with a fresh set of downs at the very least you are the
57:09last team to touch the ball well last year one of the things that doomed these 49ers you had the injuries
57:14but they were two and six in one score games and you think one score games you think close finishes
57:20but a lot of times it's the moments hidden in the game earlier in the game that lead to those close losses
57:24and they find themselves down 10-7 with that clear swing right there
57:37so sam darnold in his first half with the seahawks seven out of eleven purdy's been good 12 out of 16
57:45despite a lot of pressure
57:51this wide open nfc west but the rams surprise champion last year davante adams joining the picture
57:58there arizona second season under jonathan gannon and these two teams here who wants it
