00:00We welcome you across the Cincinnati Bengals preseason television network, including in Canada, part of the global markets program that the Bengals joined in May.
00:10Welcome fans watching on TSN, on the Bengals website, on the Bengals app.
00:15Chase Brown, star Canadian running back, will not go today, but you can be assured that all of Canada will have their eyes on him in 15 days' time.
00:25That's pretty cool. I think that's really cool. You know, a lot of times you wish you were playing, but we know what's going on.
00:31But the fact that they get to see one of their guys is pretty cool.
00:35Today's opening kickoff is brought to you by Paramount+.
00:39So many of the ones will not feature today. There's only one kicker.
00:45And so unless you throw Logan Wilson at it or bring back Chad Ochocinco, it's going to be Evan McPherson kicking off.
00:55Kicks this away. And is this returnable? It is.
01:05Bentley hammered at the 22.
01:09So Indianapolis won the toss, chose to receive.
01:13Bentley should see a bit of time at running back alongside Noel and Wright.
01:19The quarterback position is finally decided for the Colts.
01:22Daniel Jones named the starter on Tuesday.
01:25Neither he nor Anthony Richardson, the former number four overall pick, will play today.
01:31Riley Leonard, the fifth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame, with Giddens as a sidecar to his right.
01:42And it'll be Giddens up the middle and continuing to churn his way up to the 26-yard line,
01:48where he gets dropped by DJ Ivey.
01:54Let's take a look at today's Players to Watch, presented by Kettering Health.
01:59When you talk to Zach Taylor, he says the toughest position to try and look at in practice or in training camp is safety.
02:06So he has his eyes on P.J. Jules. Also, Braylon Lux has had a nice camp.
02:10Well, they get their chance. I mean, it is tough.
02:11But now they get a chance to get on film and see what they can do against the blue jerseys here.
02:18Leonard on second down will throw.
02:21And slings right, complete across the 30, up to the 36-yard line.
02:26And that is Will Mallory, who played in ten games a season ago, the fifth-round pick out of Miami.
02:32Got hit by Joe Giles-Harris and Raymond Johnson.
02:41We spoke with Zach Taylor. We spoke with Duke Tobin.
02:43Certainly we've heard from Al Golden this week.
02:46This is vanilla, as vanilla gets, on the defensive side of the football.
02:49They don't want to show anything that could tip off Cleveland or Jacksonville the first couple weeks of the year.
02:56But they want to see fewer explosives and ultimately see the team ready for the big moment as Leonard rolls, throws, and completes.
03:05That is Treadwell, who spent the entirety of 24 on the practice squad, the former first-round pick in Minnesota with Jalen Davis in the coverage.
03:14You know, you had a great point there, Mike.
03:16They're not going to show a whole lot.
03:18So it's just a matter of you're manned up.
03:20You've got to do things and beat the guy across from you.
03:22And that's just some things never change.
03:24You're not going to show things that you're going to do in the regular season because these are practice games.
03:28But you want to improve.
03:29You want to progress as a football player and as a defense and offense.
03:33That's a 22-yard pickup.
03:34Leonard hands off.
03:36And coming up from safety, P.J. Jules after Raymond Johnson anchored him to the ground.
03:42And that's the thing for a safety, right, Anthony?
03:45In practice, guy gets touched by a linebacker.
03:49You blow the whistle, you're done.
03:50It never gets to the third level.
03:52So Jules coming up and making that hit and ending the play is what they're looking for.
03:57It is.
03:57And I think a lot of times, you know, people don't realize that the safety is the tackling guy.
04:02I mean, the cornerbacks are more the cover guys.
04:04Sure, the safety's cover.
04:05But they're the guys that come up and fill in a hurry and really lay the lead of the running backs.
04:10Gould in orbit motion.
04:12And the handoff goes to the right on second down and intermediate.
04:16And it's a lot of early work for D.J. Giddens, the fifth-round draft pick out of Kansas State.
04:25You see some good penetration there by the white jerseys, the Bengals defense, and that's what you need.
04:29You need to get those arms extended and get that offensive lineman away from you.
04:33And therefore, you can see where the ball is, and at the last second, you just shed the guy.
04:39You can never have enough good linemen, offense or defense.
04:46Giddens in motion.
04:47This is Leonard throwing the out route.
04:49A.D. Mitchell.
04:51Looks like he is short of the stick.
04:54So the coverage from D.J. Ivey got him down in plenty of time, and Leonard looks like he's going to stay on the field.
04:59Leonard quick drop, quick throw, a little slip there, and it does appear that he is short.
05:06But Ivey was right down in the coverage.
05:09So the offense remains.
05:11It's fourth down in less than a yard.
05:13This would-be field goal range.
05:17And in the regular season, you'd think they'd try and take the points.
05:22Treadwell motions in.
05:23There's the handoff.
05:25Jump cut through the hole.
05:26That's a first down.
05:27And down to the 26-yard line, Eric Gregory lassos him and brings him to the turf.
05:33Isaiah Thomas makes the initial contact, first down.
05:36Great opportunity for these defensive players.
05:38Different situations.
05:39You got the first down, you got the second down.
05:41But now, let's see what we can do on third and short or second on short when we need to stop them.
05:46That's when, you know, again, I talked about the technique.
05:48That's when you have to be really sounding your technique.
05:51Gap control, make sure you're not losing that.
05:54Eighth play of the drive.
05:56It started on the opposite 22-yard line.
05:59Leonard handoff.
06:01Giddens, who was primarily a backup as a freshman and then a co-starter the two years that followed at Kansas State,
06:10plunging forward down to the 22 of Cincinnati.
06:14Young man in there that just ran off.
06:21And they've been talking about him.
06:23They say, look at him.
06:24He's been doing a decent.
06:25Now he gets a chance.
06:26And that's Howard Cross III.
06:28Of course, his father, a pretty good tight end in this time in the NFL.
06:31They say you look at him and he just continues to work hard.
06:35So he's getting his shot here early.
06:38Leonard Playfake immediately throws that into the ground.
06:43Drew Ogletree was racing out.
06:45The coverage was solid anyways.
06:47But Raymond Johnson ensured that there'd be no chance to get that off.
06:51And you called number 56 a couple times already, Raymond Johnson.
06:55You know, it's one of those things.
06:57I mean, you know, I think we might have talked about it earlier.
07:00People talk about, well, you're going to do the preseason game.
07:02You know, you know, Jamar.
07:03No joke.
07:03But the guys out here are earning.
07:05They're trying to earn a spot.
07:06They're trying to get their time in the NFL.
07:09So they're going to be busting their tails here.
07:11Everyone's worried about the 53.
07:12But the next 16 are all eligible to jump into the active roster three times.
07:17And, of course, get signed any time.
07:19Throw here from Leonard.
07:20Really tight coverage.
07:21Got batted away.
07:23Marco Wilson dealt with injury at the beginning of training camp.
07:29And the former Florida Gator and a fourth-round pick in Arizona.
07:32Able to bat it down.
07:34Let's look at that.
07:35He laid out.
07:36I mean, what a great job by Marco Wilson.
07:39He knew he had to lay out in order to get the football down.
07:41And he did that.
07:42Excellent coverage.
07:44Came in off waivers midseason from New England last year.
07:48And that sets up fourth down.
07:50And too long to actually attempt to do anything with it.
07:54And so Spencer Schrader is on for the field goal try.
08:00From 40.
08:01That is knuckling inside the post.
08:07It's good.
08:09So Indianapolis grabs three points on their opening drive.
08:12Cincinnati's defense stands up at the cusp of the red zone.
08:15Offense coming.
08:16Game presented by Paramount+.
08:18Bengals football.
08:22Uday Nation, we're back in the jungle for opening orange on Sunday, September 14th, 1 p.m.
08:27We'll take on the Jags.
08:29Visit Bengals.com slash tickets to find seats and experience the jungle in all orange.
08:35Just like we're wearing today, partner.
08:36I'm going to wash it up after this game, and I'll be ready for that game, the 14th.
08:40I know you will be.
08:42So Schrader hits a 40-yard field goal.
08:44Concludes an 11-play, 56-yard, five-plus-minute drive.
08:49And sends this away.
08:50Burton takes it on a knee and will run it forward across the 25, looking for the sideline.
08:55And stutters into the Cincinnati bench at the 34.
09:01So here's the Cincinnati offense.
09:03Desmond Ritter will lead the charge.
09:06What is there to be said that hasn't been said already about his career as a Bearcat?
09:1042-6 as a starter.
09:13Threw for 10,000 yards.
09:1687 touchdowns through the air.
09:1828 more on the ground.
09:19Two-time American Athletic Conference Player of the Year took them to the college football playoff.
09:25And despite being a Colts tryout player in minicamp over the summer, arriving late,
09:31he's audibling on his first play, takes a hit, and tosses into the flat.
09:36Gallimore is the one who just unloaded on him.
09:39Kendall Milton was charging into the flat.
09:43It's soft target for him.
09:45Let's take a look at today's Players to Watch presented by Kettering Elf.
09:48We're going to see Rivers, who so often plays tackle, sliding inside to guard.
09:53And then we saw Jermaine Burton on the kickoff return.
09:56He's going to get some time in offense, too.
10:03Whenever Lou Anarumo is setting up for the Colts, Desmond Ritter and the Bengals are having to make changes on the fly.
10:09This is first down yardage.
10:15Isaiah Williams, who was a punt returner at the tail end of last season after being cut by Detroit, signed on November the 8th.
10:25And gets a good amount of run here to start.
10:27There is Lou Anarumo, six years in Cincinnati.
10:30As his first full-time defensive coordinator job, multiple AFC championship games, ultimately winds up in Indianapolis.
10:40This is a good run across the Bengal Bay, continuing to charge Kendall Milton.
10:45There is a flag back at the line of scrimmage.
10:49The initial hit from Jonathan Edwards.
10:52Stymied, but didn't stop Milton.
10:54Holding.
10:55Offense number 60.
10:57Ten-yard penalty.
10:59Repeat first down.
10:59Ronald Torbert is our referee.
11:02Last chance for the stripes to get ready, too.
11:05Well, I know there was a holding penalty there, but Kendall Milton, what a cutback.
11:09Man, he saw that lane and didn't hesitate and got it through there.
11:13It's too bad there was a holding penalty.
11:15Number 60, Jackson Kirkland.
11:17First down and 18.
11:33And it's a run off right guard.
11:35Pick up a couple.
11:36About, we head downstairs to the third member of our crew, Marissa Contepelli.
11:40Marissa.
11:40Well, guys, there's a lot of familiar faces squaring off this afternoon.
11:43As you mentioned, Mike, Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo returning to Cincinnati, being on Zach Taylor's staff from 2019 through last season.
11:51Colts linebacker Joe Bocci spent the past four seasons as a Bengal before signing with Indianapolis this last offseason.
11:58Bengals D-Taffel Taven Bryan was with Indy the last two seasons.
12:01And then there's a handful of former college teammates on opposing sides.
12:05Of course, Desmond Ritter used to toss touchdowns to Colts receiver Alec Pierce for four years up the road up at University of Cincinnati.
12:11And then you have Jordan Moore and Shaka Hayward.
12:13They were teammates at Duke with Colts quarterback Riley Leonard before his time at Notre Dame.
12:19So everybody knows everybody today.
12:21Good catch by Burton right at the first down marker.
12:23And able to muscle his way through for a chance to move the sticks after being behind schedule.
12:29First and 18 turns into first and 10 in Indy territory.
12:37The motion across from Pryor.
12:40Ritter with time.
12:42Throws short.
12:43Flag is down.
12:45You see a good amount of Gary Brightwell and Kendall Milton here at the outset.
12:49That was Milton.
12:49That was Milton.
12:53Looks like a procedural problem.
12:56Ineligible player downfield.
12:57Offense number 65.
12:59Five-yard penalty.
13:01Repeat first down.
13:02Mike, that's one of the things.
13:03You have these guys that are fighting for position.
13:06You do not want to see these penalties.
13:07You want to make sure you're disciplined.
13:09You're tight.
13:10And right here we see Zach Taylor and Lou.
13:13Kind of chuckling and laughing and talking about good old time.
13:16Now that he's trying to stop Zach's offense.
13:18So, no, Lou did a great job while he was here at one time.
13:21Highly regarded as maybe a next head coach.
13:23Good to see him end up with the Colts.
13:25He was a finalist for the Arizona job.
13:29Ultimately went to Gannon.
13:30And, you know, if you're a Cincinnati fan, I think certainly the frustration last year,
13:36understandable.
13:37But what he did over the six years, give him a lot of credit.
13:41Those fourth quarter defensive performances, especially against Kansas City,
13:46you're not going to the Super Bowl without a lot of the things that Lou implemented.
13:50You know, it's tough that that happened.
13:52But you're right.
13:52You look at the entire body of work, pretty good.
13:55And it's a shame that the one year is really what, you know, really was the downfall.
14:00Ritter throwing over the middle.
14:02Isaiah Williams able to shimmy out across the 40 and set up a manageable third down.
14:07Daniel Scott chased him into the Indianapolis sideline.
14:10And Ritter doing a good job picking his receiver and getting rid of it quickly.
14:15Had a little pressure early on, but the last several times he's really unloaded in a hurry,
14:20hit his receiver, moving the stick.
14:22So good job by Ritter.
14:23It is a fast-moving first quarter.
14:27Only second drive of the game.
14:29Ritter starting to find his rhythm.
14:32Played in each of the first two weeks.
14:34We expect to see him into the third quarter for sure.
14:37We do think Peyton Thorne is going to play later in the game.
14:42Third down and five, and another flag.
14:45Ball start.
14:51Offense number 60.
14:53Five-yard penalty.
14:54Third down.
14:55These are the things that when we speak to Zach Taylor, he says,
14:58I want to see operational things look right,
15:01whether you're the guy who's going to start the first snap of the season or not.
15:12Jackson Kirkland getting time here at the outset.
15:14The news that Cordell Bolson sustained a shoulder injury this week.
15:26It's a greater highlight on the guard position.
15:29Cam Grandy motions inside.
15:33Able to chip to give a little extra time,
15:35and that is lofted perfectly, but out of the hands of Jermaine Burton.
15:39And here comes the punt team for Cincinnati.
15:50Boy, that was a heck of a throw by Ritter.
15:53Got it right over the linebacker's outstretched hands,
15:56and it kind of appeared it went right through the hands of Burton,
16:00but did a nice job on that throw.
16:03I was impressed.
16:04Lofted that right over the defender.
16:10And Rico will have his tenth punt of the preseason.
16:15Drops the nose of the football.
16:17Coleman Owen calling for a fair catch.
16:20Sam makes it at the third team.
16:21Indianapolis up by three.
16:22The game presented by Paramount+.
16:24At 5th-3rd, we work hard to make banking a 5th-3rd better.
16:30The Ring of Honor induction ceremony this year
16:48to take place at halftime of the game against the New York Jets
16:51on Sunday, October 26th.
16:53Congratulations, Dave Lapham and Lamar Parrish,
16:57who are added this season.
16:58They join Anderson, Anderson, Brown, Curtis, Dillon, Esiason,
17:03Johnson, Crumwright, Riley, and, of course, Anthony Munoz.
17:09And Dave Lapham will do game number 1,000 as player and broadcaster
17:13here in Cincinnati later this year.
17:16He is an iconic voice here and a good friend to everybody
17:20in the organization and out, for that matter.
17:22Leonard on first down, throwing to the perimeter.
17:26And there's not a lot to be had here.
17:27That is four Bengals all coming together.
17:30Davis and Hayward lead the charge and make the hit on Laquan Treadwell.
17:36Nice to have more company, huh?
17:37It really is, especially the guy that I played next to for my first four years.
17:41The guy was amazing.
17:42We all know him as a broadcaster, but an unbelievable player also.
17:45Played 10 years here.
17:46Went to USFL.
17:47As a young offensive lineman to have someone at Dave's caliber,
17:52not only physically but mentally, man, it was a plush coming into the NFL
17:55and a longtime friend, and everyone just loves the guy.
17:59Yep.
18:00Love you, Lap.
18:01Excited for you.
18:01There you go.
18:06Penetration off the edge and a big-time hit laid by P.J. Jules.
18:10There's a flag afterward.
18:13Excessive celebration is something that's being targeted by officials
18:17at the outset of the season, it should be noted.
18:20You talk about points of emphasis, you wonder if that's the issue here
18:25because that hit was certainly solid on Giddens.
18:29After the play was over and sportsmanlike conduct taunted by the defense,
18:33number 37, 15-yard penalty from the end of the play, automatic first down.
18:39This is number 37's first unsportsmanlike conduct penalty
18:41toward potential disqualification.
18:45What?
18:46What?
18:47I mean, you're on top of that rule, but come on.
18:49It's an emotional game.
18:52I mean, a couple of hand slaps, and I don't know about that.
18:56Are they going to call that in Cleveland?
18:57I doubt it, but I think every team is going to experience that one time in preseason.
19:02It always seems to go that way when you've got a point of emphasis.
19:05Yeah, but you can't take the emotion out of a great game like this.
19:08It is an emotional game, and when you make a great play like that,
19:11you've got to be able to exhibit a little bit of that.
19:13Four penalties, 35 yards for Cincinnati in this game.
19:16And Leonard slings over the middle with a fresh set of downs.
19:20They again all fly to the football.
19:22John Metta leading the way for Cincinnati.
19:26Not a ton in that either for Indianapolis, just a pickup of four.
19:31Good thing about the defense right now, they're giving everything inside.
19:34I mean, they're not letting the guys get deep,
19:36and they're covering them once they make the reception.
19:38They're making the tackle quickly for short games.
19:40So I like that.
19:41I like the reacting really quick to the ball.
19:46Leonard played at Duke, resurrected that program,
19:49then took Notre Dame all the way to the national championship game.
19:53There's pressure, down he goes.
19:55There's a flag as well.
19:56Isaiah Thomas got to Leonard and dragged him down,
20:00and I think this is against Indianapolis too.
20:02Oh.
20:06Holding.
20:07Offense number 71.
20:10Penalty's declined.
20:11Play results in third down.
20:13Shane Steichen looks on, the Indianapolis head coach.
20:17I decline that too.
20:18Isaiah Thomas, nice inside move.
20:21He starts outside and then comes inside.
20:23Just totally beats his man.
20:25Great move.
20:26Utilizing his quickness.
20:27Takes that inside hand and swipes the offensive lineman's hand down,
20:31which eliminates one of the hands,
20:33but does a lot of it with the quickness.
20:37Leonard.
20:39Third down and 13.
20:40On the rollout, throws.
20:42Caught at the 40.
20:44He's going to be short of the line to gain.
20:46Laquan Treadwell getting a lot of burn here at the outset.
20:50First time he's been on the same team back-to-back
20:52since he left Minnesota back in 2019.
20:55Stops in Atlanta, Jacksonville, New England, Arizona, Seattle, Baltimore,
21:00and now Indy.
21:02Do you think Howard Cross maybe was kind of saying,
21:05I couldn't hit you last year at Notre Dame,
21:07but I can hit you today, so you better run.
21:09Yeah, that's right.
21:19Roberto Sanchez will do the punting for the Colts,
21:23and Jermaine Burton is standing back at the Cincinnati 15.
21:26Should have a chance to return this.
21:29That is a missile.
21:31Oh, my.
21:31That's going to the water.
21:34Holy smokes.
21:36That's a 59-yard punt,
21:38but a 39-yard net.
21:40This game is presented by Paramount+.
21:43How do I love Skyline Chili?
21:47Let me.
21:49Got the black and orange look today.
21:51Black jerseys, orange pants with black stripes,
21:55and the iconic orange Tiger Stripes helmet.
21:58Coordinating orange and black,
21:59and they have striped the jungle.
22:03Sunday, October 5th.
22:05Make sure you check the map.
22:06Know what you're supposed to be wearing
22:08as we strike the jungle.
22:09It looked incredible when the Bengals did it last year
22:12when they hosted the Browns this year
22:15against the Lions.
22:16Huge game,
22:16and I think everyone's going to have a chance
22:18to get involved.
22:19It's fun.
22:19It's fun.
22:20Old guys like me open up the emails,
22:22look at your emails,
22:23and check what you have to wear,
22:25because it is fun.
22:26I mean, it's a great time to show your jungle spirit here.
22:32Milton Malone setback.
22:35It's Ritter under center.
22:36Making a man miss in the hole.
22:40That's good stuff from Milton.
22:44Left McGrone in the dust.
22:46He is fighting for that starting linebacker job
22:49alongside Joe Bocci.
22:52Nice job.
22:53Oh, nice job by Milton there.
22:54He's going right,
22:55and then he sees the backer sidesteps him,
22:57makes a few yards.
22:58Great vision,
22:59being able to see that linebacker
23:00shoot through that gap and avoid him.
23:02Would you say that some Colts fans
23:03on that missed tackle McGrone?
23:05Second down and five.
23:09Ritter lost his footing,
23:11but able to regain.
23:12Throws an interception.
23:14Carried back by Daniel Scott.
23:16Inside the 10.
23:17Scott will scoot into the end zone
23:19for an Indianapolis touchdown.
23:21Daniel Scott,
23:28the fifth-round pick,
23:30who missed all of 2023,
23:32doing an ACL,
23:33all of 2024,
23:35to an Achilles.
23:36What a moment.
23:39And it got tipped en route.
23:41Ritter stumbled a little bit,
23:42regained it,
23:43and then, yeah,
23:44tried to make the play
23:46after stumbling coming out
23:47and dropped it on the pass.
23:50Yeah.
23:51It seemed doomed from the start.
23:55He just sort of stumbled on that rollout,
23:57and then the ball gets tipped
23:58on the free rusher.
24:01And cool moment for Scott.
24:03He tore his ACL in OTAs his rookie year,
24:07then tore his Achilles in OTAs last summer.
24:11First time he's even gotten to the preseason,
24:14and he runs it back for a score.
24:15Indianapolis up by 10,
24:17less than two to play in the first.
24:24Indianapolis out to a 10-0 lead.
24:26Desmond Ritter,
24:28with a good opening drive,
24:29moved the football,
24:30but a tipped pass
24:31leads to a Daniel Scott touchdown.
24:35And Indianapolis
24:36out to a double-figure advantage
24:39late in the first quarter.
24:41Jermaine Burton will continue,
24:42it appears,
24:43to handle the return duties
24:44here at the outset this afternoon
24:46on what is a gorgeous,
24:48if for the big guys,
24:49a little bit steamy afternoon
24:51in the Queen City.
24:52Good to work up a good lather,
24:54even sitting up here in the booth,
24:55as I always do.
24:57I never lack a good lather
24:58when it's above 75.
25:00You and I were on
25:01in the pregame
25:02with Joe and Jeremy going,
25:03the lights are a little hot.
25:05Here's Burton who gets hit
25:06at the 30-yard line.
25:08We've seen a lot of Kendall Milton
25:09here at the outset.
25:10For more on him,
25:11let's go downstairs to Marissa.
25:13That's right, Mike.
25:14Well, you have to love
25:14when things come full circle,
25:16and that's exactly
25:16what Kendall Milton
25:17told me earlier this week.
25:19Kendall's uncle, Kevin Hardy,
25:20was a linebacker in the league
25:22for nine seasons
25:23after being the second
25:24overall pick in the 96 draft.
25:26Hardy finished out his career
25:27right here in Cincinnati,
25:28spending the 2003
25:30and 2004 seasons in stripes.
25:32Now, Kendall was only two years old
25:33when his uncle was a Bengal,
25:35but he said him signing
25:36onto the practice squad
25:37last season was still
25:38an exciting moment
25:39for him and his family.
25:41Now, Kendall has told me
25:42he's been feeling great this camp.
25:43He told me the difference
25:44was really him being
25:45in the same system
25:46for the last year.
25:47He's feeling comfortable,
25:48which has led to
25:48an increase in confidence.
25:50And Milton told me
25:51he's kept his head down
25:52and grinding
25:52and keeps going back
25:53to a piece of advice
25:54his uncle Kevin
25:55had given him years ago.
25:56That's to control
25:57what you can control,
25:58keep showing up every day
25:59with high energy,
26:00and showing the type of effort
26:01you can play with.
26:02Thank you, Marissa.
26:04He's certainly done that.
26:05Kevin Hardy was an all-pro
26:06and a pro bowler in 1999
26:08in Jacksonville.
26:09You mentioned he finished
26:10in Cincinnati.
26:11Milton was rumored
26:12to actually get a pretty big
26:13undrafted free agent
26:15money guarantee
26:15from Philadelphia,
26:17but got cut
26:17at the end of preseason
26:18last year.
26:19Ritter airing it out
26:20down the sideline,
26:22and it is incomplete
26:24seeking Kendrick Pryor,
26:26who's done some pretty good work
26:28in preseason
26:29the last few years.
26:30Juju Brents,
26:31who's been dealing
26:31with injury,
26:32a local Indianapolis kid,
26:34a season-ending injury,
26:36just week two last season
26:37in on the coverage.
26:39You know,
26:39it's interesting.
26:40You think about his uncle's advice,
26:41great advice,
26:43because so many times
26:44you get young guys
26:44that come in here to camp,
26:46and they're worried
26:47about their play.
26:48They're worried about
26:48what the coach is thinking,
26:50so just go out
26:51and take what you control,
26:51and that's what you do
26:52on the football field.
26:54Memorize and know your plays.
26:55Do it to the best
26:56of your ability,
26:57and then let the coaches
26:58and the scouts
26:59and the team
27:00do what they need to do.
27:02Ritter.
27:04That ball got batted down.
27:06There's a flag
27:07in the defensive backfield.
27:11Bengals jump on it
27:12just to be sure.
27:20Andrew Coker's like,
27:21I get to touch the football?
27:22All right,
27:22let's do it.
27:24Isaiah Land got in there.
27:25So, incomplete or fumble,
27:31question number one,
27:32and then what's the flag
27:33on the backside?
27:34There's actually two flags,
27:36both at the 41
27:37on opposite numbers.
27:38There were two fouls
27:42during the play,
27:43both by the defense.
27:45Holding,
27:45number 29,
27:46that penalty's declined.
27:48Illegal contact,
27:49number 38,
27:50that penalty will be accepted.
27:51Five yards from the previous spot.
27:53Automatic first down.
27:55Point of emphasis
27:55in preseason,
27:57illegal contact.
27:58First down, Cincinnati.
28:00Lambens was the one
28:01that the penalty was calling.
28:02He said,
28:02why did they pick up the flag
28:03from my buddy
28:04and called it on me?
28:05But you see the pressure
28:05right there by Land.
28:07Ritter doing a good job
28:08standing in there,
28:09throwing the football.
28:12Monson's actually
28:13claimed off waivers
28:14by Cincinnati
28:15back in 2023.
28:18Didn't feature.
28:22Racing toward midfield.
28:23That is a first down carry.
28:25Kendall Milton,
28:26physical downhill.
28:28The former Orange Bowl MVP
28:30at the University of Georgia.
28:33Nice job by the offensive
28:34line in Kendall.
28:34Look at that.
28:35Nice little cutback vision.
28:37And he's taking
28:38his uncle's advice.
28:39Just do what you can control.
28:41And he is.
28:41He's running the football,
28:42running it hard,
28:43making some great cuts,
28:45utilizing the nice block
28:46by the offensive line.
28:48That is great patience
28:49to eventually slalom out wide.
28:53It is Milton again.
28:55And a forward lean
28:57all the way down
28:58to the 46-yard line.
28:59It's McGrone
29:00who stood him up.
29:02You know,
29:02you look at the
29:03running back room,
29:04and it's kind of
29:04an embarrassment
29:05of riches right now
29:06because they love
29:07what they've seen
29:07out of Taj Brooks.
29:08You bring back
29:09Samajay Pirine
29:10who's a human safety blanket.
29:12And then the way
29:13Chase Brown played last year,
29:15well, I think Cincinnati
29:16is quite confident in that.
29:18As the first quarter
29:19This is the end
29:19of the first quarter.
29:21Comes to a conclusion.
29:22Thank you, Ronald.
29:25End of quarter number one.
29:26Duke Tobin
29:27set to join us
29:28in a moment.
29:29Indianapolis up 10-0.
29:30Week three of the preseason
29:37back in Cincinnati.
29:39Indianapolis a 10-0 lead
29:40as we head to the second quarter.
29:42How about you come
29:43into the booth?
29:43Director of player personnel
29:44for the Bengals, Duke Tobin,
29:46joins us as he always does.
29:47Anthony Munoz, Mike Watts.
29:49I'm just glad he got up
29:50to the booth this time.
29:51In Philly, we had you
29:52downstairs in, like,
29:53witness protection.
29:54Yeah, that was tough on me.
29:55It was a new environment.
29:56I couldn't see what was going on.
29:57It was different.
29:58I'm not good.
29:59You guys are better
29:59at that than I am.
30:00Yeah.
30:01You are the star,
30:03in essence, of this show
30:04to an extent that
30:05week three,
30:06these are the guys
30:07that you probably wanted
30:08to get eyes on
30:09in a moment like this.
30:10Guys like Kendall Milton.
30:12Milton at the 10.
30:13Continuing inside the 5.
30:16Kendall Milton
30:17putting on a show.
30:19Yeah, no penalty there,
30:20so that was good.
30:21That was good.
30:22That's good.
30:22You know, we've got to
30:23clean some of that up,
30:25and they've had their share
30:26over on their sideline as well.
30:28So, sometimes you get that
30:30in the last preseason game.
30:31Tell you, that time he hit
30:31the hole, but the previous
30:33hole, man, he's had patience,
30:35and then he's hit the hole
30:35open up, and he's hit it
30:36and done a great job.
30:39So, all of a sudden,
30:40here's Cincinnati
30:41at the Indianapolis 5.
30:43Six carries for 68 yards
30:45for Kendall Milton
30:46in what's a stacked
30:47running back room.
30:48They've brought in Gary
30:51Brightwell, and it's
30:53Brightwell rushing
30:54up the middle,
30:56and he's down
30:56around the 4-yard line.
30:59You have to love
31:00what you saw
31:00out of Chase Brown.
31:01Last year gives you
31:02all the confidence
31:03in the world.
31:03You bring Samajay back.
31:05That running back room
31:06is in a really good spot,
31:07isn't it?
31:07Yeah, yeah.
31:08We feel good about it,
31:10you know,
31:10and Chase has looked
31:12outstanding in camp,
31:13and, you know,
31:15so's our rookie,
31:16so's Samajay,
31:17and you can see
31:18we've got some depth
31:19behind them, too,
31:20and so we feel
31:21great about it.
31:22Justin does a really
31:23good job with that room.
31:26Motion into the width
31:27from Brightwell.
31:27It's Ritter throwing
31:28the fade back
31:29at the end zone.
31:30It's too high
31:31for Jermaine Burton.
31:32As we talk running backs,
31:33let's stay with the running backs.
31:34Running the ball,
31:35been really good.
31:36How has their protection been?
31:37Pickups and stuff like that.
31:38Yeah, I think they've,
31:39obviously, Samajayay
31:40is excellent at that,
31:41and one of the reasons
31:42we brought them back,
31:43and Chase has really
31:45taken a step in that,
31:46and so it's really,
31:48it's good to see
31:49it's important
31:49for what we do.
31:50That's our identity.
31:52You're going to have
31:52to do that some.
31:53You know,
31:53we want to establish
31:54the run.
31:55We want to, you know,
31:56have success on first down
31:58running the ball,
31:59but we throw the ball a lot,
32:00and we've got the people
32:02to do that,
32:02and so we try to play
32:03to our strengths.
32:04How about this power
32:06toward the goal line?
32:07It is marked just short.
32:12That was Milton
32:15getting back into the game
32:16and trying to finish
32:17what he started
32:18on this drive.
32:22He started that convoy.
32:27I can't get that number.
32:28He's trying to drag him
32:29in the end zone,
32:30his buddy right there.
32:31Yeah.
32:33That's McLaughlin.
32:34That's McLaughlin.
32:36Cincinnati's going to go for it.
32:37Fourth and goal inside the one.
32:39It's a handoff.
32:40It is hit in the backfield.
32:42There is a flag down
32:43at the line of scrimmage.
32:46And the way Desmond Ritter's
32:48pointing,
32:49he thinks they'll have
32:49another go.
32:50Offside.
32:51Defense number 91.
32:53Half the distance
32:54to the goal.
32:55Repeat fourth down.
32:57You know how often
32:58you'd be able to stop
32:58the push-push
32:59if you could just be offside?
33:01Yeah.
33:01Well, that's a strategy
33:02sometimes on defense.
33:03They're not giving up
33:04much yardage there
33:05when they're on the inch line,
33:06and so they try to get
33:07a little bit of a head start
33:08and they got caught that time.
33:15So Milton stays in
33:16and we'll do it again.
33:17Fourth down
33:18and goal inside
33:19the one-yard line.
33:20Cincinnati trying to punch
33:22this in.
33:22Milton's been the star
33:23of the drive.
33:24Ritter will carry it
33:26in for a Bengals touchdown.
33:30Sometimes you've just
33:34got to push it in.
33:35Cincinnati pulls within
33:38a field goal.
33:49That is a fourth down
33:51conversion presented
33:52by the law offices
33:53of Blake Maislin.
33:55And it's good for six.
33:57And McPherson comes on.
33:58You haven't had to worry
34:00about punter or kicker.
34:01I guess that's
34:01Holder and kicker
34:02in this instance.
34:03McPherson, a couple 50 pluses.
34:05Looks great.
34:05Yeah.
34:06He had a great camp.
34:07Came back well off the injury
34:09from last year
34:09and has looked good.
34:11I always worry about
34:12the kicker and the punter.
34:14These two guys are pretty good
34:16and we feel like
34:16we're in a good spot with him.
34:18Mind if we keep you around here?
34:19That'd be great.
34:21So Ritter able to push this
34:23into the end zone.
34:26It is enough.
34:28Plenty of fans arriving
34:42at Pacor Stadium
34:43for this last tune-up
34:44before the regular season.
34:45Week three of the NFL preseason.
34:48And Cincinnati,
34:50an excellent drive.
34:51The scoring drive brought to you
34:52by Paramount Plus.
34:54Nine plays.
34:54It's the 41-yarder
34:56from Milton
34:57that really got it going.
34:58Got it inside the five.
35:00And it takes just over four minutes.
35:03Grabbed the first touchdown
35:04of the game for the Bengals.
35:05It's bobbled in the end zone.
35:07You want to get
35:08as many returns
35:09in preseason as you can,
35:10but you don't want
35:11to get them like that.
35:12Come back into the booth, everyone.
35:14Mike Watts,
35:14Anthony Munoz,
35:15and Duke Tobin
35:16still with us here.
35:17So here comes
35:18the Cincinnati defense.
35:20What are the things
35:21you're looking for
35:21in a game like this
35:23where a lot of the ones
35:24and twos got their burn
35:25not only in the Washington game
35:26but in a pretty intense
35:28practice week as well
35:29coming out of it?
35:30Yeah, you want consistency.
35:32You want to see the next step
35:33from these guys.
35:34This is important tape
35:35for these guys,
35:36not only with the Cincinnati Bengals
35:37but the rest of the league.
35:39And for everybody
35:41that's in these last
35:42preseason games,
35:44this is their resume.
35:45And we want to see them
35:46take what they've learned
35:47and put it out on the field
35:49and play with intensity,
35:50play with violence,
35:51play with fierceness.
35:52That's what we want
35:53out of these guys.
35:54You know, Duke,
35:55and that's the fun thing for me.
35:57You know, it's like
35:58I get it all the time.
35:59Well, you're not going
35:59to see the starters.
36:00To me, it's fun
36:01to watch these guys
36:02because they're fighting
36:03for jobs.
36:03You know, they're going
36:04to lay it out there.
36:05They're going to be,
36:05you know, hitting hard
36:06and getting after
36:07because they want a spot
36:08somehow, either on
36:09the regular squad,
36:10the practice squad,
36:11or maybe somebody else's.
36:12Right.
36:12So I enjoy watching these guys.
36:14There's not a guy
36:15in uniform out there
36:16that we don't believe in
36:17or we wouldn't have them here.
36:18So we want the best
36:19for these guys.
36:20We want them all to produce
36:21and it's fun to see them,
36:23you know, put it all together
36:24here and play.
36:26See what they got.
36:27Riley Leonard
36:28facing second down
36:29and eight.
36:31Toss is short.
36:33Got him down.
36:34That is an excellent
36:35open field tackle
36:36from Nate Brooks.
36:38I think there's been
36:40a lot of talk about
36:40how Lux has handled things
36:42here at the outset.
36:44We get a chance
36:44to see Brooks.
36:45We saw a lot of Jalen Davis.
36:47We got to see
36:47Marco Wilson today.
36:49What have you seen
36:49out of the corner positions
36:51at this point?
36:51Real great competition.
36:52You know, we've got some guys
36:53with real traits.
36:54Speed, change of direction.
36:57You know, Al has been
36:59doing a really great job
37:00with the technique teaching
37:02and so we've got
37:04a real competition there.
37:05Who makes the team?
37:07Who is our practice squad,
37:08guys, that we can elevate
37:09and play?
37:10Offense number 62.
37:12Five-yard penalty.
37:14It's third down.
37:14But it doesn't matter
37:15how you got here,
37:16whether you're on
37:17our practice squad last year
37:18or whether you were
37:19a college free agent
37:19signed well after the draft.
37:21You know, if you have
37:23the traits, we're going
37:24to put you in a position
37:25to show it.
37:26And those guys you mentioned
37:27have all shown something
37:28to us.
37:31That'll push it back
37:32to third down and 10.
37:37Leonard fields a high snap.
37:39Gets flushed.
37:40He's on the run
37:42and he'll ground it.
37:43Before we let you go,
37:44what do you think
37:45of the rookie linebackers
37:46to this point?
37:46I think there's going
37:47to be a lot put on
37:48Carter and Knight this year
37:49from an early moment.
37:51Yeah.
37:52Transform that room.
37:53That was one thing
37:53Al wanted to do.
37:54That's one thing
37:55we attacked in the offseason
37:56and we've been really pleased
37:59with the young guys
38:00and the progression
38:01of guys like Shaka Hayward
38:03and Joe Giles-Harrison.
38:04Guys like that
38:05who have come in
38:06and done well for us.
38:07So complete transformation
38:09of the room
38:10and then we've got Logan.
38:11You know,
38:11it's kind of the anchor
38:12but we really like
38:13those young guys.
38:14That's it.
38:15I just want to say
38:16good luck up in Cleveland.
38:17Appreciate it, guys.
38:18We'll be watching.
38:18Come home with the win.
38:20That's the plan.
38:21We'll be watching
38:21the next couple days
38:22and next week
38:23on what happened.
38:24It's a busy time.
38:25It's a fun time though
38:26to get our team set
38:27and ready to go.
38:29Burton trying to reverse field
38:31goes down at the 16
38:32to Echo.
38:33Yeah, good luck in Cleveland.
38:34Good luck the rest of the way.
38:35We're going to be rooting for you
38:36all the way to the Super Bowl.
38:38Appreciate it, guys.
38:38I meant that.
38:39Great job as usual.
38:40Duke Tolbin with us
38:41here in the booth.
38:43And Cincinnati
38:44coming off a defensive stop
38:47and a nice moment
38:48for the offense
38:50getting downfield in a hurry.
38:54See what the flag is here.
38:55Number 34, the kicking team
39:01went out of bounds
39:02on his own during the kick.
39:03That five-yard penalty
39:04will be added to the dead ball spot.
39:06Cincinnati's ball
39:07first and ten.
39:08Timeout on the field.
39:09Duke Shelley probably thought
39:11that was being launched
39:12all the way to Kentucky.
39:1410-7 here in Cincinnati.
39:16Bengals have the ball
39:17presented by Paramount+.

39:35Cincinnati offense
39:37on the field
39:38but Jermaine Burton
39:39came up a bit gingerly
39:40after fielding this punt.
39:42You know,
39:42he spoke with Zach Taylor
39:43yesterday
39:44and we were trying
39:44to get an idea
39:45of what the wide receiver room
39:47and really every room
39:48would look like
39:48as cut down day arrives
39:50and he goes,
39:51what I've learned
39:51in seven years
39:52is you never know
39:53until Tuesday
39:54what that's going
39:55to look like.
39:56Ritter a deep drop
39:57and now escapes.
39:59He's going to use his legs
40:00out across the 25-yard line
40:02and scampers out
40:03at the third.
40:04He got flushed
40:05by a land
40:05who's been everywhere
40:07so far.
40:08You certainly hope
40:09it's not anything
40:10significant for Burton.
40:11He's sitting on the bench
40:12at present juncture.
40:14Odds are he wasn't
40:14going to play
40:15all that far
40:16into the game
40:17this afternoon
40:18either way.
40:19So a little more shine
40:20for some guys
40:21a little further
40:21on the depth chart
40:22and who knows
40:23maybe there's just
40:24a little glimmer
40:26for some of these guys
40:27to have that special game
40:29like we saw
40:29from Mitch Tinsley
40:30in Washington
40:31on Monday night.
40:34Ritter from under
40:35center
40:35the give
40:36it's Brightwell
40:37that's a first down
40:39and it is
40:40five Colts
40:42all together
40:43to bring him back.
40:45A first and ten
40:46for Cincinnati
40:46BJ Hill is healthy
40:48and ready
40:48for the regular season
40:49and of course
40:50he's ready
40:50to stand by
40:51with Marissa.
40:52Thanks a lot Mike.
40:53Well BJ it's been great
40:55seeing you ramp up
40:56back at practice
40:56this week
40:57just how have you
40:57been feeling
40:58and is the goal
40:58still to be ready
40:59for week one?
41:00That's the goal
41:00I'm excited to be
41:01back out there
41:02with the guys
41:02running around
41:02having fun
41:03I'm excited to be
41:05back out there
41:06playing football.
41:07Now there's a handful
41:08of younger guys
41:09in this defensive line
41:10group
41:10what have you seen
41:11out of some of them
41:11through camp so far?
41:12Young, smart
41:15athletic guys
41:16that loves playing football
41:17you can see each
41:18and every day
41:18they're ready to come in
41:20and just want to get better
41:21asking a lot of questions
41:22to help their game
41:22and I'm excited
41:23for these young guys
41:24who's coming in.
41:25Now as one of the
41:26veteran defenders
41:27in this defense
41:28just what has your message
41:29to your teammates
41:30been this preseason?
41:31Just be consistent
41:32I think that's the goal
41:33for us
41:33just to be consistent
41:34make sure we're on top
41:35of our game
41:35each and every play
41:36each and every quarter
41:38in game
41:39so if we do that
41:40I think we'll take care
41:41of business.
41:41Now with Al coming in
41:43as new defensive coordinator
41:44just what has stood out
41:45the most to you
41:46with the scheme
41:46he wants to run
41:47and how is this approach
41:49maybe going to challenge
41:49you as a player?
41:51You know for one
41:52I just love the way
41:52he just comes
41:53and approaches the game
41:54with a lot of swagger
41:55allows us to be us
41:56have fun
41:57and play free
41:58I'm glad we got him
42:00in the building
42:01he's going to bring
42:02the best out of me
42:02and the other guys
42:03too in the building.
42:04Alright so I also heard
42:05that you're doing
42:06a little bit of undercover
42:0710 yard penalty
42:09repeat second down
42:10So I heard you're doing
42:11some undercover work
42:12here this afternoon
42:13have you told your teammates
42:14what your assignment is
42:15or is that staying
42:16under wraps?
42:16No I'll definitely tell them
42:17you know I don't want them
42:18saying I'm too crazy
42:19while I'm around
42:21so they're trying to avoid me
42:22as much as possible
42:23Well BJ Hill
42:25Mic'd Up will be a part
42:26of our Best of Mic'd Up
42:27series feature
42:28that will air September 1st
42:29on Fox 19
42:30now as part of our
42:31Bengals season preview special
42:32BJ thanks for the time
42:33Thank you
42:34Yeah I'll be tuning in
42:36for that
42:36I was worried
42:39we weren't going to find out
42:40what the undercover mission
42:41was for BJ Hill
42:42It was a holding penalty
42:45that inches Cincinnati
42:46back into second
42:47and 16
42:48approaching midway point
42:49of the second quarter
42:50Ritter escapes
42:51still has his eyes
42:53downfield
42:53he'll toss it
42:54toward the far sideline
42:55and that is
42:57Grandy
42:58taking it into the bench
43:01that is land
43:02pressuring
43:03again
43:04You know
43:04I think we talked
43:05with Duke a little bit
43:06about what the roster
43:08looks like now
43:09Don't forget
43:09every team's watching
43:11this game
43:11the Bengals are watching
43:12every other game
43:13and you think back
43:14BJ Hill
43:15you flip him for Billy Price
43:17and you think we have
43:18Larry Ogunjobi
43:19and we've got a plan here
43:20Ogunjobi gets hurt
43:21BJ Hill's the one
43:22who's intercepting
43:23Patrick Mahomes
43:24in the 2021
43:25AFC title game
43:26You're right
43:27always looking at
43:28the waiver wire
43:29always looking at trades
43:30until it's definite
43:31it's over with
43:32you're always looking
43:33because someone slips
43:34through and they
43:35you know
43:35gets released
43:36or this happens
43:37and you pick them up
43:38and they become
43:38a difference maker
43:39so that's why Duke
43:40and his staff
43:41are constantly
43:42looking at individuals
43:43Grandy gets this
43:45within two yards
43:46of the sticks
43:47and Ritter
43:48isn't going to the
43:49sideline yet
43:50the thing that I've
43:55been impressed with
43:56this first half
43:57not only
43:57you saw a tough run
43:59there but
43:59Brightwell
44:00and of course
44:01Kendall Milton
44:02the way they've
44:02been running
44:02hard
44:03they initiate
44:04the contact
44:05we can hear it
44:06up here
44:06they're making
44:07great reads
44:08on the run
44:08it's just not
44:09all power
44:10they're able
44:10to see holes
44:11and maneuver
44:12and sidestep people
44:13so that's been
44:14very impressive
44:15with these two
44:15running backs
44:16so far
44:16this first half
44:17Brightwell
44:18lowered the boom
44:19on that holding call
44:20he dropped
44:20his shoulder
44:21first charge
44:25timeout
44:26Cincinnati
44:27Cincinnati
44:28will use
44:29their first
44:29timeout
44:30you wonder
44:30if they'll
44:31come back
44:31out with
44:32their offense
44:36or special
44:37teams
44:37now
44:39Desmond Ritter
44:40we mentioned
44:41as he first
44:41came out
44:42onto the field
44:42chance to play
44:43in stripes
44:44as a starter
44:45in Cincinnati
44:45for the first
44:46time
44:46but
44:47Joel Burrow
44:48nearly ended up
44:49at Cincinnati
44:49goes to LSU
44:50it opens the door
44:51to Desmond Ritter
44:52and what does
44:52he do with it
44:5342 and 6
44:56as a collegiate
44:57starter
44:5810,000 yards
44:59as a Bearcat
45:00and as he comes
45:02off the field
45:03he was the face
45:06of a program
45:06that went from
45:07really solid
45:08and intermittently
45:09great to
45:10for that one
45:12amazing year
45:13sell out every
45:14weekend at
45:14Nippert
45:15and reaching the
45:16college football
45:16playoff
45:17fun because
45:19not only
45:19were the
45:20Bearcats
45:20hot
45:21but the
45:21Bengals
45:22we had
45:22two football
45:23teams at the
45:24same time
45:24that were
45:25doing pretty
45:25well
45:26yeah
45:27it was
45:27awesome
45:28Rico
45:30good punt
45:31solid coverage
45:32too
45:32and
45:33it is
45:35Wagner

45:36snapper
45:36making the
