00:00And I'm thinking they may be looking around the league for an experience, too, if Sam Howell is not there, too.
00:09And there's going to be guys available.
00:11I mean, you look at Kenny Pickett, the situation that's going on with Cleveland, with Joe Flacco being named the starter, the rookies behind him.
00:18Andrew, I know you do the Buffalo Bulls preseason games.
00:21There's a quarterback battle going on there with Mike White and Mitch Trubisky.
00:24So there's going to be opportunities, but who knows what they felt of how Sam Howell has performed so far in the preseason.
00:32Haley Zappi may be available in Kansas City battling Chris Ouedukin for the number three spot there.
00:41Well, there's a lot to like about Brosmer, but I think ultimately it's the question Charles put up there.
00:47Do you trust an undrafted rookie to be your backup number two to a guy in J.J. McCarthy who has yet to play a down in the regular season NFL game?
00:56On a team that you think has big expectations.
01:00But they didn't have big expectations.
01:02Brosmer might very well be the two.
01:04But you're talking about a team that you think can get in the playoffs and cause damage?
01:08That's a huge discussion up there in Minneapolis, St. Paul.
01:13Let's see what he does here on fourth down and flip.
01:164-10 to go in the third quarter.
01:18Titans bringing pressure as well.
01:22Brosmer taking a deep shot down the field.
01:24On fourth down!
01:25It's caught!
01:26What a pass!
01:29Dante Fleming reels it in!
01:35Jason, go ahead and tell us what you saw on this one because the confidence level is high.
01:40Hold on.
01:40They might be saying it's incomplete.
01:43What?
01:43They are.
01:47Incomplete pass.
01:51He got the read.
01:52Saw what he liked.
01:54I know they're going to call it incomplete.
01:56But fourth and four, Jason.
01:58And he's like, yeah, the read tells me I'd throw that ball deep.
02:01And yes, it came out of his hands.
02:03He did not possess that well enough to call it a catch.
02:06Watch how it's moving.
02:07Now it's going to move there, hit the ground.
02:10It's out.
02:11But fourth and four.
02:13My read tells me that's the play.
02:16And he does it?
02:17And you said it.
02:19Titans had about seven or eight guys at the line of scrimmage.
02:22And they're showing pressure.
02:23And whenever you have that, there's no safety back there in the deep part of the field.
02:27So that's what allows Brozmer to say, you know what?
02:30This is my opportunity to take a shot.
02:32Not only does he read it, but the throw.
02:35Under duress.
02:35Knowing pressure is coming.
02:37Put the ball right on the money.
02:39Fleming has to make that catch.
02:41What a throw.
02:43I mean, that was a great throw.
02:45As Jordan Mims starts this drive for Tennessee on the ground.
02:49Ambry Thomas on the tack.
02:51I'm going to finish it here because Tennessee has the ball.
02:54But Jason, you played a long time in the NFL.
02:56You played against a lot of guys who would have had that same read.
03:00How many of them in his situation would have thrown it deep on fourth and four
03:03and not looked for the out or the five-yard stop pass?
03:07It takes a lot of guts to make that throw.
03:09And when you have that type of confidence that not only am I willing to make that throw,
03:14but I know I can complete it.
03:15And I can put the ball right on the money where it needs to be.
03:18Put it right in the bread basket.
03:20He just made my team.
03:21I'm just telling you right now.
03:22Mims gets to midfield.
03:26It'll be third down and short for Tennessee.
03:30Look at this Tennessee offensive line and some of the improvements that they have made
03:34compared to last year.
03:36And Brian Callahan said, look, I don't want to put too much stock in the preseason.
03:40We know we're not always going against the starters on the other team.
03:43But this was their week one starting line a year ago.
03:47And this was their projected for week one with Latham going back to his natural position
03:50at right tackle.
03:52The veteran Zeitler now at right guard and bringing in Dan Moore Jr. from Pittsburgh.
03:56They've shown a lot of improvement in that department so far.
03:59Yeah, we had a few Titans games last year.
04:01And their inability to fill that right tackle position.
04:04I remember talking to Brian Callahan.
04:06And he said it's really an open competition with a few guys.
04:09And no one was able to take on that role.
04:12Now this year you have a rookie quarterback.
04:14And now you brought in some veterans.
04:16You brought in guys like Kevin Zeitler who has been on teams that have won a ton of games
04:20with the Lions having a quarterback at Jared Goff.
04:23With the Baltimore Ravens there with Lamar Jackson.
04:26He has been around some great quarterbacks.
04:28So you mix the veterans, Charles, with the young guys.
04:31Now you create a room that can grow together and can protect your most important commodity
04:35in Cam Moore.
04:36The whole thing started with signing Dan Moore out of Pittsburgh to play left tackle
04:39so you could move Latham to right tackle.
04:41And if they get Cushenberry back for the opener and he's off the PUP list,
04:46he should be ready to go.
04:47Now they feel like they've got something working.
04:50Allen's pass is broken up.
04:52Reddy Stewart makes the play on fourth down.
04:55It's a really good play by Reddy Stewart and number 20 on right.
05:03And he does a really good job of finishing.
05:06You saw the separation at the top of the route, but he sticks with it and is able to go with
05:11that left arm and secure it and make sure that, hey, I'm not giving the officials any chance
05:16to throw a penalty.
05:17A clean breakup, a really good play on fourth down.
05:21You know what I liked about it?
05:22He didn't allow Restrepo, the rookie out of Miami, to bully him.
05:25Because Restrepo came out and got physical and tried to push off.
05:28He didn't allow himself to be backed off.
05:31Came underneath and made the play.
05:32Nicely done by Stewart.
05:33Vikings take over at midfield with Rosemar remaining the quarterback.
05:43And he'll hand it off.
05:45Valaday gets back to the line of scrimmage.
05:47Just to put a bow on the Titans' offensive line.
05:49Charles, you were talking about trying to please your dad when he was your coach.
05:53Well, that's what Brian Callahan is trying to do with his dad, Bill Callahan,
05:57who's the offensive line coach.
05:58He had to give him some new toys this year up front.
06:01And I think Dad is happy with some of those free agent acquisitions.
06:05And have you guys seen the blocking sleds that Bill Callahan has designed?
06:08His own design?
06:10He's got his own design of blocking sleds to much more emulate
06:13how a real person comes out of their stance
06:16and how you have to move them as an offensive lineman.
06:19One of them is named Bertha.
06:20And you ask the offensive lineman how it is to move it,
06:23and it takes some work.
06:25Don't give McCourty any ideas for 9-year-olds back in Jersey now
06:29with these new sleds.
06:30And if they got Big Bertha in Nashville,
06:32we'll just have to create a little Bertha.
06:34I don't know about that to New Jersey.
06:37Miles Price for 9 yards in the final minute of the third quarter.
06:41And right back to the line of scrimmage.
06:42See how they do it on short yardage.
06:44They get right up to the line of scrimmage.
06:46You talked about that earlier, Jason.
06:48And I don't know if he got there initially,
06:50but I think he did on the second move.
06:52Because he kind of slipped coming out of his stance,
06:58and then he got back up,
06:59and I think he got forward to pick up a first down.
07:05Good for a first down,
07:06and that could be the final play of the third quarter.
07:09See if Brosmer finishes his drive
07:15or if Kevin O'Connell goes back to Brett Rippon
07:18for the fourth quarter.
07:20But what a night it's been for the rookie.
07:2114 of 20.
07:23159 yards and a touchdown.
07:25And it should have been more,
07:26if not for that drop,
07:28by Fleming on fourth down.
07:30That's the end of the third quarter.
07:3217-10 Titans.
07:34We'll be back after this message.
07:35And a word from your local station.
07:37You're watching the NFL on CBS.
07:42It's part of CBS Premier Week.
07:44Well, in two weeks,
07:45you can count on a huge NFL on CBS doubleheader
07:48to open up the season.
07:50Week one early games,
07:51highlighted by Aaron Rodgers
07:52and his return to New York to face the Jets.
07:55And then a great one in the late window
07:57between the Lions and Packers
07:58and the NFL Today crew
08:00will be live at Lambeau.
08:03Week one,
08:04and that all begins at noon Eastern.
08:06You can always count on Sundays
08:07with the NFL on CBS
08:08and streaming on Paramount+.
08:12Ah, how much fun are they going to have
08:14doing that?
08:15Send us pictures from the Packers Hall of Fame, guys.
08:18Listen to the voice of Lombardi.
08:21Rosemar stays in there
08:22to open up the fourth quarter
08:24and Valaday on the receiving end here.
08:29Brian Osimois makes the tackle.
08:31He was cut by the Vikings last week
08:35and claimed off waivers by the Titans.
08:37And that's interesting with Tennessee this week
08:40because they have the number one waiver priority
08:44when all the cuts are made.
08:45So it could be a lot of guys
08:47that when they hit the waiver wire
08:49that Tennessee and their new general manager,
08:51Mike Borgonzio, could say,
08:52hey, they might look good in our Tennessee blue.
08:55So look for the Titans to be active
08:57on that waiver wire with the number one priority.
08:59Be prepared to use them
09:01for them to use the waiver wire
09:02as an additional draft.
09:08Rosemar, incomplete.
09:10In the direction of Robert Lewis.
09:19There he is.
09:21There's Jettas.
09:21That's his nickname.
09:25All right, I had to...
09:26My son had to school me out now.
09:29My son says that to me all the time.
09:31What I'm impressed
09:32is those diamonds around his neck, man.
09:34They say the diamonds are dancing.
09:35The camera's doing a great job of showing...
09:38Look at Jordan Addison.
09:39Oh, my...
09:39This is unbelievable, man.
09:41It's beautiful to see the amount of money
09:43these guys are making nowadays in the league.
09:45If they can work out wearing all that,
09:47you know they're in shape.
09:47Strong neck to take on those hits.
09:52Third down and eight.
09:53Rosemar, incomplete.
09:55And there's the contact.
09:56And there's the flag.
09:57Yeah, Marcus Harris had the coverage
09:59and a little too handsy on defense.
10:03I was waiting for it
10:04because the back judge had a perfect view
10:07right into that route.
10:09That was breaking right towards him.
10:11And then the arm got extended,
10:12I thought, Jason, so they could see it.
10:14What the...
10:15Wow, they predicted it, though.
10:17It was right...
10:18It was there for the calling.
10:19I can tell you that.
10:21Look at this.
10:25What do you think?
10:27I mean...
10:27You see all of that jersey being tugged.
10:29I mean, you're a DB.
10:31I'm a DB.
10:31Normally, we didn't see it.
10:33Normally, I wouldn't say that.
10:34But the way the jersey moved
10:35with the hand wrapped,
10:38I'd say he has a legitimate call there.
10:41He definitely does.
10:41If you're Kevin O'Connell,
10:42you're not too happy about picking that flag up.
10:45Oscar Chapman is the holder.
10:47He's in that punting competition
10:48as Will Riker attempts a 55-yard field goal.
10:52And this one is no good.
10:57And Riker will have a say about that
10:59because of what you brought up, Andrew.
11:01Who holds the ball better for this kicker
11:03who does such a nice job for Minnesota?
11:08Take a look at the hold by Chapman.
11:10Oh.
11:13Oh.
11:18But tomorrow on CBS,
11:20our day begins at noon Eastern
11:21with the Major League Pickleball Finals.
11:24That's followed by the two best teams
11:26in the WNBA Eastern Conference
11:28going head-to-head
11:29when the Liberty meet the dream.
11:30And then we're on the pitch.
11:32The NWSL.
11:33That's all tomorrow on CBS and streaming
11:35on Paramount+.
11:37New Tennessee quarterback is Trevor Simeon.
11:40And how about this?
11:41Jamar Jefferson
11:42with a big run on first down.
11:45He had a touchdown run last week in Atlanta
11:48and Jefferson goes for 29.
11:50Look at the vision, Jason.
11:52Sees it on the backside on the jump cut
11:54and bolts through that big gap
11:56and Andrew just mentioned it.
11:58Big run, 16 yards for a touchdown
11:59against Atlanta last week.
12:01Starts off with a big run here.
12:02He wants to get involved
12:03in the running back conversation.
12:05Everybody wants to say
12:06and he catches Powell flat-footed
12:08and is able to run right around him.
12:10But you said that the cutback
12:11and hitting that hole with speed
12:13makes it so hard for the defense.
12:16Simeon right back to Jefferson.
12:18Slips one tackle.
12:19Lowers his shoulder.
12:21And he's going to be very close
12:22to a Tennessee first down.
12:24Reddy Stewart finally made the play.
12:28And it's good for another first down.
12:30Is it just me
12:31or every time I hear the name Jefferson
12:33on the football field,
12:35I think about Forrest Whitaker
12:37in Fast Times at Ridgemont High
12:39playing maybe the greatest cinematic game
12:42a guy's ever played.
12:43Jefferson with about 800 tackles in that game.
12:46Yep.
12:47Back to back here for Jermar Jefferson.
12:50I didn't Jefferson.
12:51I didn't know he went to school here.
12:53I thought they just flew him in for the game.
12:54I thought he was going to be a good one.
12:55I thought he was going to be a good one.
12:57I thought he was going to be a good one.
12:58Third straight touch for Jefferson.
13:01And some pushback here by
13:03Dorian Mausi,
13:06the rookie linebacker from Auburn.
13:08You guys just gave me an assignment
13:09for the plane ride home.
13:11I have to figure out
13:11what the heck Charles was just talking about
13:13with the Jefferson reference
13:14because I have no idea
13:16what you guys are talking about.
13:17I'm telling you,
13:18if you punch in Fast Times at Ridgemont High
13:20with Sean Penn as Spicoli,
13:23you'll call me later and thank me.
13:25Okay.
13:27Here we go again.
13:29Last year, the Beatles.
13:32Well, Mr. Hand.
13:32Don't do me like that.
13:34If I'm here and you're here,
13:36isn't it our turn?
13:39Simeon slips,
13:40and now he's taken down.
13:42And that's Austin Keyes
13:43who showed up this preseason.
13:45A loss of six on the play.
13:47He went back to back Auburn there
13:49because Mausi finished at Auburn
13:52after being at Duke earlier in his career.
13:55And here comes Keyes
13:56who spent three years at Ole Miss
13:57before his last two at Auburn
13:59and stayed within the SEC.
14:01And back-to-back good plays
14:03by guys in SEC country.
14:12That makes it third down and long
14:13for Trevor Simeon
14:14who's now in his third stint
14:16with Tennessee was on the practice squad
14:19last year as well as 2020.
14:24Simeon.
14:24Oh, what a big hit.
14:27Punishing blow by
14:28Mishael Powell.
14:31Go ahead, Jason.
14:32You saw it coming
14:33because I saw your whole body react.
14:34Man, he's reading those quarterback eyes.
14:36We talked about on the long run
14:38he got caught flat-footed.
14:39Well, not this time.
14:40He is coming forward,
14:41and that was such a good hit.
14:44And when you look at that,
14:45Hellman is in the right spot
14:46on the side of the ball carrier.
14:48All shoulder.
14:50That right there is teach tape.
14:51That's what you show
14:52the young kids at home,
14:53how you can still make a big hit
14:55and do it in a clean way in the NFL.
14:57That feeling that may come up
14:59on your practice field.
15:00Definitely.
15:00I sure hope so.
15:02Powell was teammates with Cam Ward
15:05last year at Miami
15:07as Sly comes out
15:08to attempt a 30-yard field goal,
15:10and it is good.
15:12The 10.40 to go.
15:15Titans 20, Vikings 10 on CBS.
15:21Back at Nissan Stadium
15:23in Nashville, Tennessee
15:24on a hot summer night.
15:27The hometown Titans up by 10
15:29on the Vikings.
15:29Our producer tonight,
15:32Steve McKee,
15:33our director,
15:34Andy Goldberg,
15:36Jason McCourty,
15:36Charles Davis,
15:37A.J. Ross,
15:38our entire crew.
15:39I'm Andrew Catalan.
15:40We thank you for joining us
15:41for this first game of the season
15:44on CBS.
15:45Looking forward to the regular season
15:47getting underway
15:48just over two weeks away.
15:51Didn't A.J. work last night, too?
15:53A.J. did do the Steelers-Panthers game
15:56last night.
15:56Made her way to Nashville
15:58to be with us here tonight.
16:00So there's no keeping up with her then?
16:02Nah.
16:02On the move.
16:04Superstar.
16:04Lewis and Bolden
16:10are back deep
16:11for the Vikings
16:12to receive the kick.
16:20And Bolden on the return.
16:24And Bolden
16:25with a flag down
16:26and is tackled
16:27at the 28-yard line.
16:29Jason, I thought
16:32with the new dynamic kickoff
16:33we would actually see
16:34less flags
16:35in the kicking game.
16:36I'm not sure
16:36that's actually happened.
16:39That's the one thing.
16:40You do it,
16:41they're going to catch you.
16:44Holding.
16:45Return team number 41.
16:4710-yard spot of foul.
16:49First down.
16:52And A.J. down
16:53on the sideline
16:54with Josh Metellus.
16:56That's right, Josh.
16:56I mean, you're listed as a safety,
16:59but we could call you
16:59a Swiss Army knife,
17:00an X-man, if you will.
17:01How fun is it
17:02playing for an innovative
17:04defensive line
17:04like Brian Flores
17:05who lets you guys play
17:06so freely and aggressively?
17:08It's really fun.
17:09You know, we play a defense
17:10where we get to highlight
17:11a lot of our skills.
17:13And, you know,
17:13we got a lot of guys
17:14who can do a lot of things well.
17:15When you play a defense
17:16that gets to highlight that
17:17and we all get to do
17:18certain things,
17:19you know,
17:19we all get to move around
17:20and play each other's spots
17:21and understand, you know,
17:23what everybody does.
17:24It's fun
17:24because you go out on the tape
17:25and everything looks different
17:26and, you know,
17:27teams are a lot more hesitant
17:29and it's always fun
17:30playing with Brian Flores.
17:31He's an aggressive guy,
17:32but, you know,
17:33there's a lot of method
17:35to the madness.
17:36Well, many people at home
17:37might not know
17:38that you played
17:3812 different defensive positions
17:40last year.
17:41You got a headset on tonight.
17:43I don't know
17:43if you're adding a position.
17:45You want to list
17:45how many positions
17:46you played last year?
17:47Yeah, I mean,
17:48I would say they moved me
17:49around the whole defense
17:50last year.
17:51A lot of it is just,
17:52you know,
17:53showing looks
17:53to get the offense
17:54to think we're doing one thing
17:55and, you know,
17:56playing something else.
17:57But shout out
17:58to the coaching staff
17:59for, you know,
17:59being able to trust me
18:00to even do stuff like this.
18:01Today they let me
18:02call a series today
18:03so that was really cool.
18:05But, yeah, you know,
18:06shout out to the coaching staff
18:07for, you know,
18:08trusting me in all those spots
18:09because I don't get
18:09all those reps
18:10like all the other guys do
18:11and I haven't been playing
18:11those positions my whole life.
18:13But for them to trust me
18:14to, you know,
18:14be able to get the job done
18:15is really special.
18:16You were a sixth-round pick
18:18out of Michigan in 2020.
18:19What's maybe been
18:20some of your advice,
18:22your words of encouragement
18:22to the guys that are
18:23looking for roster spots
18:25tonight?
18:26Yeah, I always talk to the guys
18:27about confidence and resilience.
18:29Those are two things
18:30I think that got me through,
18:32you know,
18:32those ups and downs
18:33in the beginning of my career
18:34and still to this day.
18:35You know,
18:36if you can leave
18:37the practice field
18:37or leave your practice
18:38every day feeling confident
18:40and, you know,
18:41you can wake up the next day
18:42knowing that no matter
18:43what happened to you,
18:43you're going to attack
18:44the next day
18:45and you're going to be resilient
18:46and you're going to show up
18:46and work hard
18:47and do whatever you need
18:48to do necessary
18:49to be better and be great.
18:51Everything's going to work out.
18:52So, you know,
18:52I just tell those guys,
18:53don't get lost in the end goal.
18:54Don't get lost in what you want to do.
18:56Understand that today
18:56you're just trying to build confidence
18:58and build that resilience.
18:59So this is a CBS exclusive
19:00with the headset
19:01and those words of encouragement.
19:02You might be a coach one day
19:03is what you're saying.
19:04I mean,
19:04we're trying it out,
19:05but, you know,
19:05today felt pretty good.
19:07I have to convince my wife,
19:08though.
19:08I don't know how she feel
19:09about all that time
19:10being in the building,
19:11but it felt good.
19:12It felt good to call some players
19:13to have a little bit of power.
19:15Power out there.
19:16Well, thank you
19:17and good luck this year.
19:17Thank you, AJ.
19:18How about that?
19:19Calling plays out there.
19:21How about AJ getting the exclusive
19:22like that,
19:23getting that admission.
19:25When he said that,
19:26Jason, I looked at him,
19:27whoa,
19:27he had something different.
19:28And then when they listed
19:29all the spots
19:30because AJ illuminated
19:31all the different places,
19:33the only one I didn't see
19:34was nose.
19:34Yeah,
19:35stay away from the big guy.
19:36Stay away from the big guy.
19:36He knows what he's doing.
19:38All right,
19:38he's got it figured out.
19:40Now that we know
19:41he was calling plays for a series,
19:42we need to know
19:43what series it was
19:44to know whether the Vikings
19:45had success on defense
19:46that series
19:47to know if he'll get
19:48another shot.
19:49He'll tell you
19:49it's a three and out.
19:54Rippon back in at quarterback
19:55and his pass is incomplete
19:57on fourth down.
19:58Awesome law.
19:59The former Viking
19:59got a hand on that one.
20:02And
20:02the offense will stay
20:04on the field
20:04on fourth down and two.
20:05Right now,
20:19if you're trying to make
20:20this team,
20:21every one of those guys
20:22out there is thinking,
20:23I've got to make a play.
20:25Got to make a play.
20:25And a fourth and two,
20:27it's a great time
20:27to make a spotlight play
20:28for yourself.
20:29Rippon too high,
20:33incomplete.
20:35Looking for Dante Fleming
20:37and a turnover on downs,
20:39but there is a flag
20:40that comes out.
20:40Jalen Kimber,
20:44I think,
20:45was on the coverage.
20:46The rookie out of Penn State.
20:48Let's see what they're going
20:48to discuss on the call.
20:55Hands to the face.
20:57Defense.
20:58Five yard.
20:59It's off to the first down.
21:03Didn't give a number.
21:04That felt like the good old days,
21:05right,
21:05when they just made the call
21:06and they didn't give a number
21:07and a player.
21:07And that keeps the drive
21:11going for Minnesota.
21:12I'm going to,
21:13I'm going to guess
21:16that that was on 35,
21:17Jalen Kimber,
21:18right, Jason?
21:19And look here,
21:19they threw it
21:20where the coverage was.
21:21Yeah,
21:21that's where it looked to see,
21:23that's where the ref
21:23threw the flag
21:24and that's what I would
21:25have to assume,
21:25him on the outside
21:26where the ball
21:27was intended to go.
21:28He had good coverage,
21:29but might have got in there
21:30in that face mask area
21:32early on in the play.
21:34My lady.
21:35My son.
21:37Rippin taking a deep shot
21:43down the field
21:43and it's incomplete.
21:46Coverage on the play
21:47by Clarence Lewis
21:49who played at Syracuse.
21:52It's been his last year there.
21:54He'd spent his whole career
21:55at Notre Dame.
21:56I love Andrew
21:57trying to be smooth
21:58about getting Syracuse
21:59in there.
21:59He was waiting.
22:00He was like,
22:00Clarence,
22:01I need you to make a play.
22:02You know,
22:02you notice how I threw it
22:03immediately.
22:04He spent most of his career
22:05at Notre Dame.
22:05I'm going to try
22:06to mitigate that
22:07while I can.
22:10Get used to that,
22:11Charles.
22:12When the Cuse
22:13is in the house.
22:13That's right.
22:18Rippin,
22:187 of 12
22:19for 62 yards.
22:22Eight minutes to go.
22:24Back to the air.
22:24And this time,
22:27Rippin's pass
22:27to Fleming
22:28get his feet down.
22:30I don't think he did.
22:31I think Lewis
22:31got another good play
22:32on the sideline.
22:36Lewis undrafted
22:3713-all ACC
22:39a year ago
22:39with the Orange.
22:41Had an interception
22:41for Syracuse.
22:44He does a really good job
22:45right here
22:45on the sideline
22:46recognizing
22:47once the receiver
22:48goes up in the air,
22:49I don't have to do
22:50anything else
22:51other than just push him
22:52out of bounds.
22:52There is no force out
22:54or anything of that nature.
22:55If you don't get your feet
22:56down in bounds,
22:56it's an incomplete pass.
23:00Third down and check.
23:03Rippin,
23:04and it is intercepted!
23:07Picked off
23:08by Julius Wood.
23:10And Wood
23:11laying
23:12down
23:13Stewart
23:14on his way
23:15out of bounds.
23:19Second year
23:20defensive back
23:21out of East Carolina.
23:22And he comes up
23:23with the INT
23:24here in the
23:25fourth quarter.
23:36Part of CBS
23:37Premier Week.
23:42While we were away,
23:43they took a look
23:44at that interception
23:45in replay,
23:46and they have ruled
23:47it an incomplete pass,
23:49Gene Steratore.
23:49And he's going to the
23:50second half
23:50of the second half
23:51of the second half
23:52of the second half.
23:53And he's going to the
23:53second half.
23:54Yeah, Andrew,
23:55I think when Julius Wood
23:56goes to make that
23:57interception,
23:58initially had both hands
23:59there just briefly,
24:01but then you can see
24:02the left hand
24:03kind of come away.
24:03This is a great shot
24:04by our camera people
24:05here.
24:06As you watch this one,
24:07now you'll see that ball
24:08separate right there.
24:10You got two hands on side,
24:11and now we're using the ball
24:13right now to finish
24:14that control.
24:15In that space,
24:16as he's going to the ground,
24:17that's the ball
24:18helping him make
24:19the interception.
24:20That's why they
24:21overturned incomplete.
24:22Yeah, great camera angle
24:23there.
24:23Thank you very much, Gene.
24:24And now,
24:25Kevin O'Connell
24:26will send Will Reichert
24:28out with Ryan Wright
24:29as the holder.
24:32You saw Oscar Chapman
24:33have a tough time
24:35with the hold
24:35on the previous
24:36field goal attempt.
24:38Yeah, this operation
24:39is clean.
24:41The punting competition
24:42is officially over
24:43in Minnesota.
24:43Now, Chapman
24:46would still be
24:47a part of the Vikings
24:48as a member
24:49of the International
24:50Player Pathway Program.
24:51He has a roster
24:52exemption.
24:53He's staying regardless,
24:55but Will Reichert
24:57is going to like
24:57this better.
24:5958-yard field goal.
25:01It is good.
25:02And Charles has declared
25:04the punting competition
25:05over in Minnesota.
25:07No offense,
25:07but that's a wrap.
25:12So it's 20-13.
25:13with 7.52 to go.
25:16Well, the Vikings
25:17have a unique schedule
25:18this year.
25:19You look at their
25:19first five games,
25:21and the ones highlighted,
25:23they're going to be
25:24the first team
25:25to play back-to-back
25:26international games
25:28in different countries.
25:30How about this?
25:31They're going to fly
25:32on their purple plane
25:34across the ocean
25:36to Ireland,
25:37where they will play
25:37Pittsburgh in Dublin,
25:39and then after that game,
25:40they'll stay
25:41into short jaunt
25:43down to London
25:44to play at
25:44Tottenham Stadium
25:45against the Cleveland Browns.
25:48So the Vikings
25:48will make history
25:49this year.
25:50They will have their bye
25:51in week six
25:52after that Cleveland game.
25:55How about that?
25:57I mean,
25:59the league has to,
26:00you have to work
26:00with the league,
26:01the league has to work
26:02with you
26:02and be convinced
26:03that you want to do that,
26:05and Minnesota
26:05has embraced it
26:06with this road trip
26:08and how they're going
26:09to go about doing things.
26:10Jason,
26:10the togetherness
26:11that they'll get
26:12over those two weeks
26:13may be invaluable
26:14for them down the stretch.
26:15Jackson on the return.
26:21And it was there,
26:22Thomas,
26:22making the play
26:23on special teams.
26:25And Charles,
26:25you talked about
26:26the togetherness,
26:27and I think
26:27in addition to that,
26:29there are going to be
26:29more international games
26:31in the NFL.
26:32It is a growing thing,
26:33so I think
26:33the Minnesota Vikings
26:35being the guinea pig
26:36experimenting with this,
26:37staying over there,
26:38going to two different countries.
26:39We saw the Jacksonville Jaguars
26:41stay in London
26:42for back-to-back games.
26:44We're seeing teams
26:44expand and try
26:45different things,
26:46trying to figure out
26:47the best way
26:48to attack
26:48the international games
26:50with travel
26:50to make sure
26:51your guys are ready
26:52to go when you
26:52hit the game field.
26:53And we've all,
26:54I think we all
26:55feel and know
26:56we're getting to 18 games
26:57at some point,
26:58right,
26:58regular season.
26:59And if that's the case,
27:01they're talking about
27:0116 international games
27:02per year everyone plays.
27:04So now you take away
27:05that competitive advantage,
27:06disadvantage,
27:07everybody's going to
27:08have to go somewhere.
27:09And that's the next step
27:10for the NFL.
27:14Minnesota opens
27:19on Monday Night Football
27:20against the Chicago Bears
27:22and Tennessee
27:23will be in Denver
27:24week one
27:25before the Titans
27:26play their home opener
27:27against the Rams
27:28in week two,
27:29a game you'll see
27:30right here on CBS.
27:31We just saw Jordan Addison,
27:33remember he'll miss
27:33the first three
27:34for Minnesota,
27:35NFL suspension.
27:37So they're going to have
27:38to find ways
27:39to maneuver in those three.
27:41And that won't be
27:41easy for them.
27:44And the suspension
27:45stems from his DUI arrest.
27:47And we specifically
27:48asked Kevin O'Connell
27:49about putting Addison
27:50out there tonight
27:51since he will not be able
27:53to play in the first
27:53three games of the season.
27:55Did he think about
27:56getting him out there
27:56to get some game action?
27:57And he said he thought
27:58about it.
27:59In fact,
27:59at the beginning of the
28:00summer,
28:00that was the plan.
28:02Yeah.
28:02But he thought Addison
28:03got so many reps
28:04with the first team
28:05in the joint practices
28:06in their Wednesday
28:07scrimmage
28:08that he said,
28:09you know what,
28:10I think Jordan's good.
28:11And he said
28:12he had an exceptional
28:12camp.
28:13Yep.
28:13Yep.
28:14All right.
28:15I think we're having
28:16our first virtual
28:17measurement of the night.
28:206.41 to go
28:21in the fourth quarter.
28:22We talked about this
28:23earlier with our
28:24rules analyst,
28:25Gene's territory.
28:26Again,
28:26the officials still
28:27spot the ball.
28:29And now you get
28:30the virtual measurement
28:31to determine
28:32if it is a first down.
28:37And it's good
28:38for a first down.
28:41This about whether
28:44balls in or out
28:45with the lines
28:46and you know,
28:46the crowd is
28:47just a rhythmic clapping
28:48leading up to the call
28:49with something like that
28:51spread in the NFL
28:52at some point.
28:53Who knows, right?
28:57The entire purpose of it,
28:59I think you just saw.
29:00It took less time
29:02to do that
29:02than if they had
29:03brought the chain gang
29:04out on the field
29:05and then taken them
29:06off the field.
29:06But the chains stay
29:08because remember
29:08the visuals.
29:09Jason, you played
29:09your whole career
29:10looking for those chains,
29:11right?
29:12Coaches and players
29:13are still doing that.
29:14It'll take a while
29:15before the chains
29:15are no longer
29:16quote-unquote
29:17necessary
29:17to be out there.
29:19This is much more
29:19for looks
29:20and a backup
29:21in case the system
29:22goes down.
29:23And to get back
29:30to the conversation
29:31about Jordan Addison,
29:32there's been rumors
29:33that the Vikings
29:34are shopping around
29:35looking for veteran
29:36receivers elsewhere.
29:37And it's to your point,
29:38Charles, earlier
29:39as we talked about
29:39the backup quarterback
29:40position,
29:41this is a team
29:41that feels like
29:42they have the pieces
29:44necessary to make
29:45a legitimate run.
29:46So not only
29:47is Jordan Addison
29:48suspended for the
29:49first three games,
29:50but Jalen Naylor
29:51is dealing with
29:52a hand injury
29:52and he's banged up.
29:54So knowing who those
29:55guys are going to be
29:55out there
29:56for a young J.J. McCarthy
29:57to be able to count on
29:59is such a big deal.
30:01And that's why
30:02the rumors,
30:02and they're just rumors,
30:04of Adam Thielen
30:04a possible reunion
30:06makes sense
30:06because he knows
30:07the system,
30:08but he's also
30:09valued quite highly
30:10in Carolina as well.
30:12Dan Morgan,
30:13the GM of Carolina,
30:14he'll take the call
30:15from Puey Sehdafomenta.
30:17But he's going to tell him
30:18you're going to have
30:18to come across big
30:19because he has a young
30:20quarterback in Carolina
30:21that needs Adam Thielen.
30:23No doubt.
30:29Third down and two
30:30for Trevor Simeon
30:32and the Titans.
30:33He approached five minutes
30:34to go.
30:35Swing pass,
30:36Mims,
30:36first down.
30:37Knocked out by Powell.
30:38And that'll keep the drive
30:41going for these
30:42Tennessee Titans.
30:45Tennessee had an interesting
30:46summer.
30:47And Charles,
30:47you were a big part of it
30:49calling their
30:49preseason games.
30:51But Brian Callahan
30:51took his team
30:53on the road
30:53for nine consecutive nights.
30:56They went to Tampa
30:57for joint practices
30:58and then their
30:59preseason game
31:00didn't fly home after.
31:02Went right to Atlanta,
31:03joined practices
31:04with the Falcons
31:05before their
31:05preseason game.
31:06And look,
31:07that's a long time
31:08to take a team
31:09on the road
31:10not coming home.
31:11But he said,
31:12I think we're a much
31:12better team now
31:14than before we left
31:15on that trip.
31:16And we'll see if it
31:16pays off for Tennessee.
31:18Jason,
31:18I'm guessing you did it
31:19both ways
31:20where you went away
31:21for camp
31:21and then sometimes
31:22you're at home
31:22in your training facility
31:23for camp.
31:25These are the first
31:25five games for them
31:27at Denver.
31:27The Rams come to town.
31:29Indianapolis in the division
31:30at Houston
31:31in the division
31:32at Arizona
31:33who believes
31:33they can make
31:34some noise this year.
31:35Not a great
31:36opening set
31:38of games for them
31:39but Brian Callahan
31:40wanted to recreate
31:41old school training camp.
31:43Go someplace,
31:43be together,
31:44spend all that time,
31:46extra time
31:46with the young quarterback
31:47Cam Ward,
31:48guys extra time
31:49with each other.
31:50The word he used
31:50all summer
31:51was connected.
31:52He wanted that team,
31:53wants this team
31:54to feel more connected
31:55than they did last season.
31:56I think it's great
32:00when the teams go away
32:01and the bills
32:02still go away.
32:03They go to Rochester
32:04for a couple weeks.
32:05Josh Allen said
32:05it's one of the best things
32:06they do as a team.
32:07St. John Fisher
32:08for so few teams
32:09that do that
32:10compared to
32:11maybe even 10,
32:1215 years ago
32:12when the majority
32:13would go away.
32:14Yeah, to your point,
32:15Charles,
32:16I never did it.
32:17You always array
32:18at the facility.
32:19When I was here
32:20in Tennessee,
32:20Cleveland,
32:21New England,
32:21Miami,
32:22they all did it
32:22the same way
32:23and especially
32:24for this Tennessee
32:25Titans team
32:25who has a young team.
32:27That is such valuable time
32:29of just hanging out
32:30whether it's in a meeting room,
32:31whether it's outside
32:32of someone's hotel room,
32:33that time
32:34where you're getting
32:35to know guys
32:35beyond just the X's
32:37and O's.
32:37But, Charles,
32:38I get to know your why,
32:39what has gotten you here,
32:40your journey,
32:41and that is such a big deal.
32:43That pass is caught
32:44by Xavier Restropo,
32:47the undrafted
32:48free agent rookie
32:49from Miami
32:50who was teammates
32:51with Cam Ward.
32:53Boy,
32:53he put up big numbers
32:54at the University of Miami,
32:56over 200 career catches,
32:58back-to-back
32:581,000-yard seasons.
33:00He looks like
33:01the ideal slot receiver,
33:02strong,
33:04squat build,
33:05gets off the line
33:06of scrimmage,
33:07but he ran 4-8-1
33:08at the combine
33:09and that just hurt him
33:10in a big way
33:11in terms of people
33:12saying,
33:12is he that guy?
33:14All I remember
33:15is a guy named
33:15Anquan Bolden
33:16who ran about 4-8-1
33:19and then caught
33:19100 balls
33:20as rookie year.
33:21I had quite a few battles
33:23for Anquan Bolden.
33:24I can honestly say
33:25I was on the losing end
33:26of most of those,
33:27but he made a good point.
33:30Anquan Bolden
33:30was so physical,
33:32whether that was
33:32at the line of scrimmage,
33:33whether that was
33:34at the catch point,
33:35he did such a good job
33:36of winning those battles.
33:38Vikings call timeout
33:40with 2-17 to go.
33:41You've got to remember
33:47that obviously
33:48it'll be a very tough day
33:50across the league
33:52on Tuesday
33:53when the rosters
33:54are pared down
33:54from 90 to 53,
33:56but then there's
33:57a 17-member
33:58practice squad
33:59and a guy like
34:00Restrapeau
34:01who might not
34:02make the 53,
34:03probably will not,
34:04could still stick around
34:05in the practice squad
34:06and have a chance
34:07to stay with him.
34:07I think they would love
34:09to have him around,
34:10but here's the other
34:11part of it too.
34:13Jason,
34:13we're going to have people,
34:15hey,
34:15you made the squad
34:16on Tuesday,
34:17but then the waiver wire
34:18kicks in,
34:19and I think Tennessee
34:19will be very active
34:20in that,
34:21so there will be
34:22five, seven,
34:23maybe a few more guys
34:25that maybe make it Tuesday,
34:26may not make it Wednesday
34:27as they bring other people in,
34:29and Minnesota may be
34:30doing the same thing
34:30with receivers.
34:31It's such a good point,
34:32and the waiver wires
34:33when guys get released
34:34from other teams,
34:36the Titans have
34:36the first opportunity
34:37to claim a guy
34:39and bring him
34:40to their roster
34:40before the 31 other teams,
34:43so that's a day
34:44that a lot of young guys
34:45you don't realize,
34:46you think you made the team
34:46to your point,
34:47Charles,
34:48and then another guy's
34:49coming in that next day
34:50to take your spot.
34:52That takes us
34:53to the two-minute warning
34:55here in Nashville.
34:56Third down and ten
34:58coming for Tennessee,
35:00and they lead by seven.
35:02It was a good night
35:03for that man,
35:03Cam Ward,
35:04and Brandon Allen
35:05who looked good
35:05at quarterback
35:07as well for Tennessee
35:08and head coach
35:09Brian Callahan.
35:15There's J.J. McCarthy,
35:16only played one series
35:18this preseason.
35:20His confidence is sky-high,
35:22and he's ready to go
35:23to lead the Vikings
35:24against the Bears
35:26in week one.
35:28How about that?
35:29That's a Monday night
35:30football game
35:30on the road,
35:32and his leadership
35:34and a play
35:36will be invaluable
35:37in that one.
35:38They've got to have
35:38a team that believes
35:39in a young quarterback
35:40who hasn't played before.
35:41Can you see the 70
35:42on the back of the helmets
35:43for the Vikings?
35:44That's for Jim Marshall.
35:45Their 14-year,
35:4714-consecutive-year
35:48captain,
35:49played in like
35:50200-something games
35:52consecutively,
35:53almost 200 games
35:53consecutively,
35:54one of their
35:55all-time leaders,
35:57and they,
35:58you know,
35:58Kevin O'Connell
35:59wants his team
36:01to know what
36:01that leadership
36:02was like,
36:03and when they
36:04pick captains,
36:05they want him
36:05to emulate Jim Marshall
36:06who passed away
36:07this year
36:07from one of the
36:08all-time great Vikings.
36:10And the period
36:10of four Super Bowls
36:11passed away in June,
36:12and the Vikings
36:13will honor his memory
36:14throughout the year.
36:18Kevin O'Connell
36:19will use another timeout
36:20for his fourth down play,
36:221.54 to go.
36:23In case you're
36:24wondering at home,
36:26there is no overtime
36:27in the preseason.
36:30What took the league
36:31so long to get there?
36:33Remember that?
36:34Overtime was on the books
36:36up until what,
36:36two, three years ago?
36:37Yeah.
36:38Yeah.
36:39No more.
36:42Joey Sly
36:43is going to come out
36:45and attempt to field goal
36:47on fourth down.
36:48This chip shot for him
36:49after what we saw earlier.
36:51Yeah.
36:51Hit from 63.
36:52This is from 53 yards away.
36:55He won't even let it all out
36:57on this one.
37:01Out of the hole,
37:02the punter,
37:03Johnny Hecker.
37:09And Sly's kick.
37:12Doink and no good.
37:14No, it went in!
37:16How about that?
37:17Joey Sly with the kiss.
37:26That's a 10-point Tennessee lead.
37:27Did he go upright crossbar?
37:30Did he double hit it?
37:31There's one.
37:35There's two.
37:36Wow, how about it?
37:37I thought you jinxed him
37:38for a second, Charles,
37:39but he got it to go in.
37:40Look at that.
37:41I mean, I was like,
37:42that's not even...
37:43And you see the man right there
37:44in the front?
37:45Bones Fossil.
37:47Brand new special teams coach
37:49for the Tennessee Titans.
37:50One of the better special teams
37:51coach in the league.
37:52An incredible...
37:52Great acquisition
37:53in the offseason
37:54for the Titans
37:55getting him from Dallas.
37:56There he goes right there.
38:04Now three for three
38:06on field goals
38:07hitting from 63,
38:0930,
38:10and 53.
38:12You know,
38:12Bones coaches
38:13in cleats
38:13out on the grass.
38:15Oh, he's full of energy.
38:16Right?
38:17I've seen him in action.
38:17I mean, he is locked in.
38:18He usually...
38:19He doesn't wear the cleats
38:20on game day,
38:21but he'll have the cleats
38:22on in practice.
38:23Always has the wristband
38:24on the left side.
38:26And then he always
38:27comes out in pregame
38:28and he's got like a...
38:29A boxes...
38:30Like a UFC fighter's glove
38:32and a forearm pad.
38:33And he's working with him
38:34on punching the ball out
38:36to make sure his punt returns
38:37take care of it.
38:38Bones is fully immersed
38:40in the process.
38:45Miles Price
38:46just barely takes a knee.
38:50What did...
38:50You said it, Andrew.
38:51What did Kevin O'Connell
38:52tell him?
38:53Field it cleanly.
38:54And there's something to that
38:57because as high-powered
38:58as Minnesota expects
38:58our offense to be,
39:00Jason and Andrew,
39:01how many times
39:02you heard a coach say
39:02the next snap
39:04better be our offense?
39:06So, you punt returners
39:08or kickers
39:08think you're slick?
39:10We better have the ball.
39:12That's bottom line.
39:13We just need the possession
39:14and let that offense
39:15go to work.
39:16Brett Ripp in the Minnesota
39:20quarterback here
39:22to finish up the
39:23final preseason game
39:24for the Vikings and Titans.
39:27And he'll just hand it off
39:29to Valaday
39:29who's taken down
39:31by Timmy Horn.
39:34Fourth-year defensive tackle
39:35out of Kansas State
39:36who spent all of last year
39:38on injured reserve
39:39with the Giants
39:40after a torn Achilles.
39:41Valaday again.
39:50Valaday again.
39:53And Joe Gaziano with the tackle for the Titans.
40:14Looks like Minnesota's just content with running this one out.
40:19Jeff Simmons has not left Cam Ward's side.
40:22We're going to remake my bodyguard right here.
40:28Jeff Simmons is like, oh no, you're not getting near my quarterback.
40:42Up, see?
40:43They did fight on Monday.
40:45There they go.
40:45About to throw down again.
40:47I mean, Ward and Simmons, so much was made about that.
40:51They both downplayed it.
40:54And that should be the final play of the preseason for the Vikings and the Titans.
41:00The next time we see Cam Ward in Tennessee will be week one on the road at Denver.
41:12And for the Vikings and Kevin O'Connell and J.J. McCarthy, week one at Soldier Field, Monday Night Football against the Bears.
41:2223-13, the final score.
41:27Tennessee finishes the preseason 2-1.
41:29The Vikings 1-2.
41:31Well, you've got two teams.
41:41One, hoping to get a lot better in Tennessee.
41:44Yep.
41:44They think that they will be.
41:46Minnesota, they're thinking big.
41:48In the best division of football last year, where 14 wins got you a five seed.
41:53They understand the task ahead of them with a quarterback who's not a rookie, but it really is one because he hasn't taken a snap in the league yet.
42:01And that's the balance of cutting down these rosters.
42:04For the Tennessee Titans, you're trying to build a roster with young guys that you can grow and develop and continue to improve with your rookie quarterback and Cam Ward.
42:14For the Minnesota Vikings, you're understanding, hey, it is our moment.
42:17We won 14 games with Sam Darnold at the helm.
42:20We believe in J.J. McCarthy.
42:22That's why we moved up and drafted him in the first round.
42:25Let's make sure we build a roster where he doesn't feel like he has to do too much.
42:29Just do your job, and we're going to be exactly where we need to be.
42:33Fun night here in Nashville.
42:35Enjoying it with you guys.
42:36For Charles Davis, Jason McCourty, A.J. Ross, Gene Steratore, our entire crew.
42:43This is Andrew Catalan saying so long from Nashville.
42:47Once again, the final score.
42:48Tennessee 23, Minnesota 13.
42:52You've been watching the NFL on CBS.
42:57Have a great night and so long from Nashville.
