Transcript
00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Hewson-Bertz and today we're going to be
00:03talking about Pride. It's coming up this weekend and promises to be a phenomenally good time
00:07and there's so much that you need to know about what's on offer so if you can put up with me
00:11talking at you for three minutes you'll get to hear about some of the great acts and amazing
00:15performances that you'll be able to get to as well as all the road closures and probably
00:19transport issues that are absolutely not going to ruin this weekend for us. Now let's start with
00:24the big stuff. Pride is going on between Friday the 22nd and Monday the 25th of August with
00:28attendees to the official events is still able to buy VIP weekend or day tickets on the Manchester
00:33Pride website. Those tickets will get you into the Gay Village party as well as the new Mardi Gras
00:38event over at Frey Island and Depot Mayfield. The parade is obviously free and will be marching
00:43through the city on Saturday the 23rd of August. We'll start with the parade. It kicks off at 12pm
00:47from Liverpool Road and the route takes it through the city centre via Deansgate then moving onto
00:52Peter Street and Oxford Road before moving through Princess Street, Whitworth Street and then concluding
00:56at Fairfield Street at around 3pm. The theme for the parade this year is love which is obviously so
01:02vital to the queer community both in the form of love and support from allies who care for their
01:06friends and family and in terms of the self-love that the community has relied on through its history
01:10as a source of strength and resilience. Now head down to the streets and line the route if you can to
01:16give your love for those participating in the parade. There's also an accessible viewing area
01:20opposite the Midland Hotel on Peter Street too. The parade last year was a joy to be a part of so
01:25definitely get down there and give it a watch if you can. On to the Gay Village Party now and
01:29there's no time for downtime. On the Friday you'll have performances from people like
01:32Samantha Mumba and Fat Pride as well as a silent disco. On the Saturday we're seeing one of the big
01:37headliners take to the Alan Turing stage with Bewitched bringing their denim-clad hits to
01:42Manchester and promising a wonderful performance with the Gaydio Dance Arena on in the indoor arena
01:47at the very same day so you really are spoiled for choice. On Sunday you've got stars such as Sister Sledge,
01:52Danny Beard and so much more as well as the huge plethora of bars down in the Gay Village
01:56with their own performances and vibes going on. Heading to Frey Island and Depot Mayfield
02:01from Mardi Gras will reveal even more brilliance though the space is set to be completely transformed
02:05to create the perfect performance area for the stars that you're about to hear mentioned.
02:09You'll have people like Leigh-Anne, Billy Porter and much more coming on the Saturday
02:13with Sunday promising performances from Ollie Alexander, Talisa and the newly announced headliner
02:18Nelly Furtado. There's also a space outside for dancing, there's bongos, bingo, drag spaces and some
02:24brilliant drag performances too and I can't put into words how excited I am to see some of these
02:28things taking place. Finally, Monday brings us to the candlelit vigil, a time for reflection and
02:33emotion as the community comes together to remember those who lost their lives to HIV and fought to
02:37change perspectives on gay, trans and queer people everywhere. It's an emotional end to a weekend of
02:42love and pride and even if you can't make it, a pause to remember those who would have genuinely
02:46loved to see the people turning out to celebrate this brilliant community would not go amiss.
02:51For now though that's all, thank you very much for watching, enjoy this weekend and we'll see you
02:55again soon at Manchester World.
