Well it's not every day that athletes get scholarships to study do sports abroad. However, two lucky female athletes got that opportunity recently through a new start-up non-profit organisation called I support athletes. They outlined their plans moving forward.
Transcript
00:00The founders are calling it the I Support Athletes Movement.
00:04Their aim is to help athletes take their sporting careers to a new level.
00:08The organization was founded by Richard Woodruff, who is the father of sprinter Dylan Woodruff,
00:13and Akai Webster, who is the mother of Revel and Reese Webster.
00:16Beyond that, we wanted to give athletes an opportunity to transition.
00:22She indicated the opportunity came after an unlikely meetup.
00:25As Richard said, one day he was running around the savannah and he met Anthony Roy from Anthony Roy's college,
00:31Pelagic Placement Services, and they had a conversation.
00:35And this was where the dream of starting a transition from Trinidad to the U.S. College started.
00:44It was born on that day.
00:46Sprinter Leticia Campbell and long jumper Nataniela King from Concord Athletics
00:51are the first to be chosen for the scholarships to Wayland Batista University.
00:55I feel excited because it's been a dream of mine to go to a college and perform for my country and my family.
01:03So it's really a good opportunity.
01:04I'm hoping to study cyber security.
01:07So, yeah.
01:09How are you? Why that?
01:10Why cyber security?
01:12Well, I'm good with computers.
01:13I like to code and stuff like that.
01:15It's a hobby that I do, so I decided that that was really the best place for me to go.
01:20Do you think you'll prefer long jump over 100 meters eventually?
01:25Yes.
01:26Where are you leaning to?
01:27I'm more leaning to like long jump, triple jump.
01:30My hopes and dreams for the sport is to reach as soon as I could reach.
01:35I don't like to set limits.
01:36Setting limits to me is just the same.
01:38When you reach there, okay, that is it.
01:40I don't have to go any further.
01:40But I'd like to reach as soon as possible.
01:43Do you think you'll have to make a transition in a different culture?
01:48Yes.
01:49A big transition.
01:52I mean, Trinidad, we love the vibes.
01:54We love, we're very energetic.
01:56You're not too sure where you're going, if it's energetic or not.
02:00But I guess you have to carry that culture over there and children, what Trinidad has.
02:04Woodruff indicated further opportunities will be offered as they grow and develop.
02:09Sergio Dufort, TV6 Sport.
