00:00The penalty for a touchback is the 35-yard line, and right away, we see Austin Trammell grab it at the 10, and he's up across the 20.
00:08You see him there looking for a hole at the 30, out to the 33.
00:11The average starting position last year was about the 29-yard line, right?
00:16Yeah, and obviously the closer that you get beyond the 30 to the 35, the odds go up of your team being able to score.
00:23The dynamic kickoff is going to have a huge impact on the numbers that we see this season.
00:27Something that we will watch. The Jaguars led the league in touchbacks last season, so we'll see some of the starters for the Jaguars tonight.
00:34And there's Trevor Lawrence, who missed seven games last year with a shoulder injury and with the concussion.
00:40Travis Etienne in the backfield.
00:43You see right there, Travis Hunter in motion to the slot on the top of your screen.
00:48And movement from right tackle Anton Harrison.
00:52False start. Offense number 77. Five-yard penalty. First down.
01:00It happens. Even though it's a preseason game, the nerves still run high for everybody.
01:04Hopefully we'll settle down after a few snaps, get to playing with the kind of rhythm that we want to see.
01:09Harrison's a guy that they're expecting a lot from.
01:11Former number one pick for the Jaguars and a guy with a lot of talent, but they've pushed him this year.
01:16Yeah, pushed him. It's the go time.
01:18First-round pick, you're supposed to be one of the better players on the team.
01:20He needs to play at that level.
01:22Brian Thomas in motion as Trevor Lawrence sets up in the shotgun on first down and 15.
01:30There's a quick throw, and Brian's got it.
01:33Thomas makes a move across the 35-yard line, and he is pulled out of bounds near the 36.
01:40And let's get right to it.
01:41This is a player's game.
01:43You talked early in the pregame about this being an organization that's more player-led.
01:48Well, the thing about a play caller, man, get the ball to your best players and let them have the biggest outcome on the game.
01:53A gain of eight, so it's second down and seven.
01:56Here, early going.
01:58Preseason opener.
01:59Again, from the shotgun.
02:02Lawrence parks out the signals and the handoff to ETN, who makes a little move back to the inside.
02:07It'll set up third down, which means we'll be looking for the first and 10 line.
02:10Brought to you by Everbank.
02:12Advantage you.
02:13Other banks talk a big game.
02:15We deliver big results.
02:16Step up to game plan at everbank.com slash Jaguars.
02:20Peyton Wilson made that just a two-yard stop on ETN.
02:23ETN, he's a guy who is motivated, got the fifth-year option, playing on a one-year deal.
02:29Two years ago, more than 1,400 all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns.
02:33He's a guy who's got a lot of ability.
02:37So a third down.
02:38Call it five.
02:40Hunter slides in motion.
02:42As Lawrence takes the snap, looks in his direction, and he's got it right short of the first down near the 42-yard line.
02:52They'll push it back inside the 42, so it'll be fourth down and almost two yards as Beanie Bishop makes the stop.
03:00Yeah, a little inside option route, a little delayed.
03:02They get it to him.
03:03Doesn't get beyond the sticks, but it sets up a fourth and one.
03:06And look, we've seen this being a problem area for the Jaguars the last couple years.
03:10Let's see what it looks like in the Liam Cohen era, short yardage situations.
03:14One of the most attractive situations concerning Liam Cohen was what he was able to do with the Buccaneers
03:19and improving their running game last year.
03:21Under center for the first time on this drive.
03:24De'Ami Brown goes in motion.
03:25There's the handoff, and Brown's got it.
03:26How about that?
03:27And he's across the 45 and pushing his way out to near midfield.
03:32De'Ami Brown's got a first down for the Jaguars.
03:35Peyton Wilson, the linebacker, came over the top
03:38and makes the stop after a seven-yard gain.
03:42So I like this one.
03:43I like on short yardage being able to run a little jet sweep.
03:47To me, this is Liam Cohen digging back into his old days with the L.A. Rams.
03:51I felt like this offense has some of that 2018-2019 L.A. Rams vibes
03:56with the balance that you have on offense and some of the creativity that Liam displays.
04:00In one of his first news conferences, he was asked about the ability to gain a yard when you need it.
04:05He said, you don't always have to run between the times.
04:08And it didn't right there.
04:08First to 10 at the 49-yard line.
04:11Play action and a quick turn and throw over the middle.
04:12Oh, no!
04:13It's about Brian Thomas Jr. took a huge hit at the 36-yard line.
04:17But he is up.
04:18The pass could have been intercepted.
04:20It was not.
04:21Sebastian Castro, a rookie defensive back from Iowa, put on the big hit.
04:26Yeah, big hit coming across.
04:28This is a glance route.
04:30And he throws it right inside.
04:31The safety gets a great beat on Trevor Lawrence's eyes.
04:34Delivers a hit.
04:35A little high for my taste.
04:37Big hit.
04:37Luckily, Brian Thomas Jr. got up after that.
04:40Replays this quarter are presented by Heritage of North Florida.
04:43Jacksonville's premier roofing and remodeling company.
04:45So here's second down in 10.
04:49And Lawrence slides the man in motion.
04:51Taylor's adjusting up front.
04:56There's the waist-high delivery and back to throw.
04:58And under a bit of pressure, he'll turn and deliver a dart.
05:00And the catch is made.
05:02And it's near first down territory.
05:04A beautiful job of threading that ball to Brenton Strange.
05:08Yeah, I really like what the Jaguars are doing.
05:10Working the inside portion of the field right over the middle.
05:13Brenton Strange is someone who we expect to have a big year.
05:16Works on the back side.
05:17Trevor Lawrence looks to the front side.
05:19It comes back to the back side.
05:20Gives Brenton Strange enough time to work his route.
05:23He gets open.
05:24Man, nice play by the Jaguars offense.
05:26Moves the change.
05:27It's first in 10.
05:28Jaguars opening this game with the ball.
05:30This is their opening drive.
05:32And with 11.38 to play in this first quarter, it's first in 10.
05:35Near the 40-yard line of the Steelers.
05:37Brown in motion.
05:37Here's the handoff.
05:38Etienne going left.
05:39And cuts it up right inside the hash mark.
05:42And picks up two yards on the game.
05:45The stop made by the linebacker, Isaiah Loudermilk.
05:49So, what we're going to see and what's going to be new in 2025, a commitment to the running
05:54game.
05:55The running game not only establishes the physicality and toughness that Liam Cohnan wants
05:59to establish for his team as their identity, but it makes the game easy for the quarterback.
06:04Call it second down and seven.
06:06Receiver stacked at the bottom of your screen.
06:07The tight end and the receiver to the top.
06:09Here's the eighth play of a drive.
06:12And his play action.
06:13Deep in the pocket.
06:14He'll set up the screen.
06:15Etienne makes a man miss.
06:17Turns it up the field.
06:17Got a first down inside the 30-yard line.
06:19A nice little hop step inside the 29 to the 28.
06:24Wilson chases him down.
06:25It's a pickup of nine.
06:26And another Jacksonville first down.
06:28Brian, at practice, we've seen this a ton.
06:31Screen game.
06:32So, a lot of the things that we're doing are easy completions for the quarterback.
06:36A little play action fake.
06:37Drive back.
06:37Swing it out to Travis Etienne.
06:39We talked about him getting back to what he was two years ago.
06:42We had over 1,400 scrimmage yards.
06:44This is a way to do that.
06:45You don't always have to run in between tackles.
06:47Get him to the ball.
06:47Get him to the ball in space so he can go to work.
06:49Line of scrimmage.
06:50To the 27-yard line.
06:51And Brown slides in motion.
06:56Trevor takes the high draft.
06:57Turns and throws it.
06:58That's Hunter.
06:59And he takes a move to the inside.
07:00Tries to spin outside to the 20-yard line.
07:03Flags come in from a couple of different directions.
07:06And it's a gain of seven pending the outcome of this penalty flag.
07:11So, I like how they're using the quick rhythm passing game.
07:14To get the ball in the hands of the playmakers.
07:16Early in the drive.
07:17Brian Thomas Jr. gets a touch.
07:18We've seen Travis Hunter get a touch.
07:20Travis Etienne get a touch.
07:22Your best players need to be involved early so they can get into that rhythm.
07:25Brandon Echols made the stop.
07:28Alex Kemp and his crew were here on the practice field this week.
07:31Jaguars got a taste of how they like to officiate a game.
07:35There were two fouls on the play, both by the offense.
07:39Pass interference.
07:40Offense number seven.
07:41That penalty's declined.
07:43They'll get a block in the back.
07:45Offense number 72.
07:47Ten-yard penalty.
07:48First down.
07:49So, Walker Little picks up his first flag.
07:51By the way, Kemp and his crew threw 265 flags last season.
07:55So, the Jaguars knew coming in.
07:57That's the sixth most a year ago.
07:58They were going to see a bunch of them tonight.
08:01Yeah, it's unfortunate.
08:02A little block in the back.
08:04Yeah, I mean, it was kind of touchy.
08:06The pass interference about Brian Thomas Jr. putting his hands on the defender before the ball was in Travis Hunter's hands.
08:12So, it's first and 20, and they're backed up to the 27-yard line.
08:19And an empty backfield.
08:21And an empty backfield.
08:22Lawrence takes the delivery, turns and throws outside, and the catch is made.
08:26And Parker Washington, who had a terrific week on the practice field, is brought down by Beanie Bishop.
08:32Yeah, a lot of expectations and hopes for Parker Washington.
08:36Liam Coyne talked about him potentially being a wide receiver 2 slash wide receiver 3.
08:40Someone that can play multiple spots and spell Travis Hunter and Brian Thomas Jr.
08:44regardless, he's going to play a big role in this offense.
08:49Gain of 5.
08:50And we were told yesterday that he's been the most consistent player at the wide receiver position so far through training camp.
08:58Second and 15.
09:01And Lawrence is back to throw.
09:03Looking, has time.
09:03Now he's going to run out of the pocket.
09:05He's inside the 30 and down near the 29-yard line.
09:10It'll be a pickup of 3 and set up 3rd down and 12.
09:12Yeah, not a bad move, the decision.
09:15The coverage won on the perimeter.
09:18The pocket didn't necessarily break down because of that, but he didn't have the coverage,
09:21so he tries to tuck it and run, get as much as he can to see if he can put us in a position to get a 1st down.
09:27Still, 3rd and 11 is a long run situation.
09:31Eight and a half minutes to play here in the 1st quarter.
09:34The Jaguars have held the ball since the opening kick.
09:39Lawrence 5 of 6 on this drive.
09:40He's at 5 different receivers.
09:42Let's see what he does on 3rd and long with protection.
09:45Good time.
09:46Fires it underneath.
09:47And Travis Hunter slides.
09:48Has to try to get back up at about the 23-yard line.
09:51And the Steelers were right there.
09:53It'll bring up 4th down.
09:56Yeah, try to hit Travis Hunter on a little underneath route where he can utilize his running skills to get away.
10:02Great tackling and rallyability by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
10:06Now we have a 4th down situation.
10:08Cam Little comes on 4th field.
10:09Chuck Clark made sure that Hunter didn't get back to the outside.
10:13And so the Jaguars will attempt a 41-yard field goal.
10:18And Cam Little, who last year was outstanding, 27 of 29, puts this one right between the pipes.
10:29And the Jaguars' opening drive results in points.
10:327.41 to play 1st quarter.
10:35And the Jaguars are leading.
10:36Not bad.
10:37Not bad on the opening drive, too.
10:3912th place, 44 yards.
10:41Trevor was 6 of 7.
10:44As this kick is fielded in the end zone by Trey Sermon.
10:51And so out comes the football.
10:55To the 35-yard line.
10:58And we'll see Mason Rudolph.
11:00See, that's the deal.
11:01If the ball bounces in the field and goes into the end zone, the ball would come out to the 20.
11:07They want the kicking team to put the ball in the landing zone because they want returnable balls.
11:13If you catch it in the end zone, you get it to the 35.
11:16Yeah, this is about trying to get more returns in the game.
11:20So here's Mason Rudolph with Kenneth Gainwell.
11:24Tight end in motion.
11:28Rudolph play action.
11:30Under a bit of pressure.
11:31Now steps, turns, and delivers a pass.
11:32And this one is caught.
11:34A flag is thrown as the catch is made near the 46-yard line in Jacksonville territory.
11:39Roman Wilson comes down with the ball and a 19-yard pickup.
11:42Yeah, yeah, 19-yard pickup called the Jaguars and a 3-D coverage.
11:48Prior to the pass, holding defense number 22.
11:52That penalty's declined.
11:53Result of the play is a first down.
11:55We got Jarrion Jones.
12:02So it's first down for the Steelers in Jacksonville territory on one play.
12:09Head coach Mike Tomlin.
12:1118 NFL seasons as the head coach of the Steelers.
12:15Never had a losing.
12:21Play action again.
12:23Rudolph dumps it short.
12:24And the catch is made.
12:25But a nice open field tackle.
12:29Ben Skoranek makes the catch.
12:32And is tackled immediately by Dewey Wingard after a 3-yard pickup.
12:36Yeah, good job by Dewey.
12:37You're going to see more zone coverage from the Jaguars this season.
12:41Here's Dewey.
12:42He's hanging out in the curl flat area.
12:44Sees the ball thrown.
12:45Reacts quickly.
12:46And doesn't give up a lot of yards after catch.
12:48Which is what the defense is intended to do.
12:50Second down and 7 at the Jacksonville 43-yard line.
12:54There's play action again.
12:57Trying to hit the quick screen.
12:58And the Steelers do.
12:59Inside the 40-yard line goes Roman Wilson.
13:03And he'll go down near the 38.
13:05And set up a third and short after that 5-yard pickup.
13:09Yeah, good job on the quick screen.
13:11They get it outside.
13:12This is one where you have to have the defense running and rallying to the ball.
13:16Third and 2.
13:17Rudolph going to throw again.
13:18Turns and slings the ball.
13:19And it is caught.
13:20It's a first down for the Steelers.
13:22Making the grab.
13:23Brandon Johnson.
13:25Yeah, it caught Tyson Campbell in off coverage.
13:28So Mason Rudolph just took the easy completion on the outside.
13:32Tyson Campbell did a good job of closing, making the tackle.
13:34But it's a first down for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
13:35Inside the 35-yard line.
13:37Inside the 34.
13:38It's first down and 10.
13:44Tight formation here.
13:46And Rudolph under center.
13:49Surveying that defense.
13:54Making some adjustments to the veteran quarterback.
13:56Has Caleb Johnson behind him.
13:58And he gives it off to the rookie from Iowa.
13:59Trying to bounce it outside.
14:00And he does find room.
14:02He got away from Eric Murray.
14:04And stumbled forward for a pickup of 2.
14:07Yeah, Eric Murray showed up in a hurry.
14:09Tried to get in there to make the cut.
14:11Tried to tackle Caleb Johnson low.
14:13Couldn't quite get him down.
14:14He stumbles for 2 yards.
14:16But still, that's a win for the defense.
14:18Long yardage situation on 2nd down.
14:22Steelers break the huddle and set up at the 32-yard line.
14:252nd down and 9.
14:29Back to throw.
14:30Rudolph spins and turns and throws it out of the backfield.
14:34And Caleb Johnson makes the grab.
14:36Goes inside the 30.
14:37But there's a flag down to the offensive backfield.
14:40It looks like he might have a holding call.
14:42Illigo use of hands to the face.
14:43Offense number 76.
14:4510-yard penalty.
14:472nd down.
14:49That's the big right tackle.
14:51Last year's number one pick who missed a lot of the season.
14:54Troy Fautano.
14:56Yeah, Troy Fautano is a really good player.
14:59But he managed to mess up.
15:01Now this is a favorable situation for the Jags.
15:03We'll see if they begin to heat him up, bring a little pressure.
15:07There's the shotgun snap on 2nd and 18.
15:09Rudolph turns and throws over the middle.
15:11Catches Nate inside the 30-yard line.
15:13And brings up a big 3rd down opportunity.
15:17Scotty Miller reached for the ball on a 15-yard grab on 3rd down.
15:20And there's some communication issues, perhaps, in the secondary.
15:23Because a couple of guys have been wide open.
15:25Yeah, a couple of guys have been wide open.
15:26And some of this is what you're going to see.
15:28A little more bend-but-don't-break defense from the Jaguars
15:31as opposed to the high-pressure approach
15:33that they tried at times in previous seasons.
15:37Big tight end.
15:37Darnell Washington's in the ballgame now on 3rd down and 3.
15:43Taronic slides in motion.
15:44He's to the right.
15:46Here's the inside handoff.
15:47And it's a first down for the Steelers.
15:50Caleb Johnson following the right side.
15:53Getting in behind Zach Frazier.
15:56Picks up 4.
15:57And he'll move the chains for Pittsburgh.
15:59Now, for the Jaguars, this has been a problem area in the past.
16:03The run game.
16:04We talked about having a team that wants to be tough
16:06and a physical team.
16:08The only way that you can impose your will on people
16:10is you have to be able to stop the run on early downs
16:12so you can dictate the terms on later downs.
16:15There's Anthony Campanile,
16:16who has gotten rave reviews in his first season with the Jaguars so far.
16:21The players love his approach to the game.
16:24And they're excited to play for him.
16:25See if they can get him a stop.
16:27There's a quick toss.
16:28And the catch is bad.
16:29And an immediate tackle.
16:32Robert Woods got free.
16:33The veteran receiver inside the 20 to the 19 for a pickup of 4 yards.
16:38Yeah, really creative play.
16:39This is a bootlet slide concept.
16:41Meaning you're going to boot one way, come out the back door.
16:43Robert Woods starts on the right.
16:45Slides out the back door to the left.
16:47Tyson Campbell's on the spot.
16:49Still decent game for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
16:51Pittsburgh Steelers sets up a second and six.
16:54Tyson Campbell's had a really strong performance so far in training camp.
16:57And I've seen him all over the field this evening.
17:01Rudolph again in the pocket.
17:03Throws this one.
17:03It's caught by Washington for a Pittsburgh touchdown.
17:0619 yards right up the middle.
17:14And Washington's celebration apparently is going to draw a flag.
17:18Yeah, it's going to draw a flag.
17:19Celebration penalty.
17:20The part that's concerning for the Jaguars is unit three, the unit bit of his own coverage.
17:26He stretches the scene.
17:27Mason Rudolph did a good job of looking to safety to the front side.
17:30Touchdown is good.
17:31After the play was over, unsportsmanlike conduct.
17:34Pittsburgh number 80 dumped the goal post.
17:36That's a 15-yard penalty on the extra point.
17:43So, the Steelers marched down the field.
17:48Rudolph is 6-of-6, so they did not impact him with the pass rush.
17:52And they struggled to get to the receiver before the ball.
18:00And here's Ben Sauls.
18:03He'll try to give the Steelers a 7-3 lead with 2.56 to play in the opening four.
18:11Yeah, I mean, a few things that you don't like on that drive.
18:14Too many big plays in zone coverage.
18:18Had a third-long situation.
18:19He picked up a significant game.
18:21Then he gave up the big touchdown pass.
18:24Got to tighten it up on that zone coverage.
18:26Here's a 48-yard extra point.
18:30And the left-footed kicker has it up on the way.
18:33And he gets it.
18:35Jaguars trail the Steelers 7.
18:44The continuer to do it.
18:44I don't think so.
18:45I just want to take it.
18:45I want to laugh.
18:46All those guys.
18:46I want to think so.
18:48Thanks for the reason.
18:48Everybody looks so great.
18:49Thanks for interested.
18:49Thanks for the reason.
18:50Everybody feels such a great vantage.
18:50I'm not sure you're just willing to do it.
18:51I'm going there.
18:52I'm not sure that the weather is going to be on the ground.
18:53I'm not sure if you go to the Slack guy.
18:53I'm not sure that the weatherでき만 be on the ground.
19:00As the weathervellian is absolutely destructive.
19:03And the weather will be able to catch up for the weather.
19:06And the weather will be an extremely рук of weather.
19:07And we are trying to catch up weather that.
19:08We start like her gauge the weather-rate.
20:39So far tonight.
20:40And Mullins to throw, and he gets it to Parker Washington, who gets outside and manages
20:47to scoop just past the first down marker.
20:50That's the kind of effort we've seen from the third-year wide receiver.
20:54Yeah, Parker Washington has been terrific throughout training camp, and this is also
20:58one of the things that we're seeing from Lynn Cohen.
20:59A little creativity on these third and short situations.
21:03Jet sweep, bubble screen, doing things that go against the grain when it comes to how
21:07you attack the defense in an obvious run situation.
21:12The reason there was room outside was because Trenton Irwin was doing a heck of a job blocking
21:15that corner.
21:16Here's first to 10 at the 47-yard line of Pittsburgh.
21:19Washington slides in motion.
21:21Play action back to throw.
21:23Mullins turns and fires it to Washington, and he is cut down for a loss of almost three yards.
21:28Yeah, just a really good job by the Pittsburgh defense, staying on top of that.
21:34Didn't go with the jet sweep fake.
21:36Even Mick Mose looked down the field, had to drop it off to Parker Watson in the flat, but
21:40there was no room available.
21:42Great job by the coverage of Pittsburgh.
21:43Brandon Echols got him, and it'll set up second down and a little more than 12.
21:51Play clock and game clock are aligned, so the Jaguars need to get this one off.
21:55Four receivers, and now Bixby makes five out of the backfield.
22:01Mullins barks out the signal and takes the waist-high delivery, turns and delivers a pass,
22:06and it's dropped at the 45-yard line.
22:10And it'll bring up third down and long, and Washington, for all the accolades,
22:14couldn't bring that one in.
22:15Yeah, couldn't bring that in, and that would have really been helpful because it would have
22:19cut the yardage in half, never looking at a third and long situation.
22:23And against the Steelers, in normal situations, this would be a blitz-heavy down,
22:27a lot of zone pressure to see if they can trick the pass protection,
22:30which is the Jaguars' regular handle.
22:31LaQuint Allen, Jr., Jaguars draft choice.
22:36He's in the backfield now with Mullins on third down and nearly 13.
22:38There's plenty of time.
22:39He'll turn and launch the ball.
22:40He's got a receiver.
22:41The catch is made.
22:42That'll be a first down for the Jaguars.
22:44And coming up with it, Joshua Cephas, who's had an excellent training camp,
22:48and he gets an exclamation point with that 18-yard catch.
22:53This is the end of the first quarter.
22:54Jacksonville first down.
22:56That'll bring us to the end of the first quarter.
22:58The Jaguars trail the Steelers 7-3, and we're back after this.
23:07We've seen good things so far.
23:09Mullins, the seventh-year quarterback from Southern Miss via the Minnesota Vikings,
23:14is under center.
23:14Slides the tight end in motion, has Bixby in the backfield.
23:16Here's the handoff, and he's looking for room, and he is pounding his way to the 30,
23:21the 29 for a pickup of three.
23:23I think maybe he missed a big hole out to the right.
23:25Yeah, he did.
23:26And look, he's so focused.
23:27Remember, last year, tank Bixby got caught dancing a few times,
23:31and so he's been more focused on being downhill, getting the shoulder square,
23:35attacking the line of scrimmage, and really picking up those dirty yards.
23:39Jaguars averaged four yards per rush in the first quarter.
23:43Here's the eighth play of a drive with the Jaguars facing second and seven.
23:47Opening minute of the second quarter.
23:497-3, the Steelers lead.
23:52Hunter Long, the tight end.
23:53Comes from wide at the top of your screen to line up tight,
23:56and here's the draw play, and there goes Bixby to be outside this time.
23:58He's got speed and power, and he gets to the first down marker,
24:02plus some down at the 21-yard line.
24:04Yeah, what you're seeing is a guy who's really very comfortable
24:07running the rock downhill.
24:09Here we have a little fake bubble screen handed to him downhill.
24:12He gets to the next level and understands,
24:14a guy have to get north-south as much as possible.
24:17Don't want to lose in the yards.
24:19Always want to finish falling forward.
24:22Yeah, the first-and-ten line today is brought to you by your local Toyota dealers.
24:25No matter your destination, Toyota goes with you.
24:28Toyota, let's go places.
24:29First-and-ten, and here's Bixby again running to the left this time,
24:33and the hammer just goes inside the 19-yard line for a gain of three,
24:39and they'll put it at the 18.
24:40Yeah, and we have to get used to seeing this.
24:42There's going to be a shared workload in the backfield at running back.
24:46Travis Etienne, for all the wonderful things that he does,
24:48running on the edges, catching the ball at the backfield,
24:51sometimes you do want the hammer to be able to establish that physicality
24:54and toughness in your run game.
24:55But if you're able to get equal distribution, Tank Bixby, Travis Etienne,
25:00this offense could be the physical offense that Liam Coren envisions.
25:04Which could set up play action beautifully for Trevor Lawrence,
25:08Brian Thomas Jr., and company.
25:11Tenth play of the drive.
25:12Play action this time rolling wide.
25:14Mullins looking to throw the ball.
25:15Fires it.
25:15It's caught.
25:16Joshua Cephas pulls it in inside the 17-yard line.
25:20Not a lot, but at least he did get the ball on a two-yard gain.
25:24And replays this quarter are presented by Farah.
25:27And Farah, the exclusive injury law firm of the Jaguars.
25:32Yeah, Brian, what you like, this is another play action pass.
25:35You roll to the right.
25:36You cut the field in half.
25:37Easy read for the quarterback.
25:38You're looking for the big corner, but it's not there.
25:41Drop it off to the wide receiver running the snag route,
25:43which is what Nick Mullins was able to do.
25:46Third down five and three receivers plus the tight end.
25:49Mullins in the shotgun.
25:50Marks out the signals.
25:51Now moves long from the bottom of your screen to the top.
25:55Drops back to throw.
25:56Looks for Bixby.
25:57Bixby's got it.
25:58No, he can't quite pull it in.
26:00It was heading right for him, and the linebacker got over there
26:02and knocked it away just as he was snatching it.
26:06Cole Holcomb made that happen,
26:08and so we'll see Cam Little come on and try another few.
26:11Yeah, and this is the play that we've seen them run
26:14in practice time and time again.
26:16A mesh concept with a rail by the back.
26:18Nice delivery and throw.
26:19Tank Bixby needs to come up with that pass.
26:24Second field goal attempt of the night for Little.
26:27Second-year kicker.
26:29We try a 35-yarder.
26:33Cut into that stealer lead with 12.22 to play.
26:37From the hold of Logan Cook,
26:39the swing of the right leg,
26:40and this one is up on the way,
26:41and it is good.
26:43However, there is a flag down.
26:49And Hunter Long is telling the Jags bench.
26:5112 players on the field.
26:53Offense.
26:53Five-yard penalty.
26:55Fourth down.
26:57You don't like that,
26:58but in your preseason game,
27:00sometimes you have somebody who's trying to get the king south.
27:02From the game clock to 12.22.
27:04Listen, the acronym is FAST.
27:08Fundamentals, right, is the first word,
27:11and that's what he's looking for.
27:13That's one of those things he's going to point out
27:14when they get into the team meeting.
27:16Yeah, and sometimes the difficulty of managing a preseason game,
27:19so many different combinations,
27:21starters in, starters out.
27:22Some of the young guys are in.
27:24You have to be aware
27:25who is supposed to be in the game in these moments.
27:27So 35 becomes 40.
27:34So perhaps we'll see another sub-opportunity.
27:4012.22 to play here in the first half.
27:43Second drive for the Jaguars.
27:45We'll end with a field goal attempt of 40 yards.
27:49And this is well, well, well within the range of Cam Little.
27:56His career-long is 59 yards.
27:58There's the snap, the placement by Cook.
28:00This went up on the way,
28:02and it is good.
28:037-6, the Steelers lead it.
28:05We're back after these messages from your local station, Jacksonville,
28:08because of what he was able to achieve with that offense in Tampa.
28:11Are you seeing signs of it?
28:12I know we didn't see touchdowns.
28:14We saw field goals,
28:15but are you seeing what you thought you'd get?
28:17Well, I'm going to give one small edit.
28:19I give Shod a ton of credit,
28:20because Shod was really the one who identified Liam
28:24as somebody he really felt like could be the right head coach,
28:27and then being brought into the process
28:28as we did the in-person interviews,
28:31Shod nailed it.
28:32He absolutely nailed it.
28:34And that in-person interview,
28:36the final thing is watching him communicate
28:39and articulate what his vision was for the organization
28:43was beautiful and knew right away
28:44he was the right guy for the job.
28:46You know, Tony, one of the things that has been taught about,
28:48players and coaches, communication and trust,
28:50you know as a player how important it is.
28:53But why was it important for Liam
28:54to really impose that and act that with this program?
28:57Well, I mean, I think everything's new this year.
29:00I mean, we're setting a new standard, how we want to operate.
29:02I heard you talking about fast, you know, the style of play,
29:05what's the culture, the type of individual we want in the building.
29:08And so to do that,
29:09you've got to communicate very clearly what you expect
29:11and then hold everyone accountable to it.
29:14And Liam's done a great job as our head coach
29:16of really delivering that message.
29:17And our players have bought in.
29:19We've had a great camp
29:20and really excited what's ahead of us.
29:22You know, one of the things that Liam said
29:23in a meeting early on in his tenure
29:25was that elite communication is required
29:28for a team to play elite.
29:29Are you getting the sense that this team
29:32is going to be an elite communicating team?
29:35Hold on, I was just watching.
29:37Just a note real quick for our fans.
29:38For the first time, seeing a guy go both ways is pretty fun.
29:41And Travis Hunter starting the game off on offense
29:43and then now coming out here on defense,
29:46exactly why we brought him into this building.
29:48So excited about what Travis is going to bring.
29:50And it's a lot of fun.
29:52Sorry about that.
29:53The elite communication.
29:54Listen, that was a better story.
29:55I kind of jumped off all of you.
29:56You're a broadcaster at heart.
29:57You know that.
29:58You're a football player now turned EVP.
30:00But talk about the decision, Tony,
30:02and the bold move to go and move up and get this kid.
30:06But I'll go back to what you're talking about in communication
30:09because a lot of that was critical in my sack right there by Smoot.
30:14Good to see Smoot back in the Jaguar uniform.
30:17A lot of fun.
30:18But you talked about communication from the head coach.
30:20I think something James, Liam, and I all hold dear
30:23and really emphasize is communication and collaboration
30:27amongst the three of us.
30:28When Sean made the move to make the changes here,
30:30bringing the three of us in,
30:32the expectations were set that the three of us,
30:34each very well-defined roles,
30:36but together to come together and communicate
30:38and come up with big decisions and make big decisions.
30:41In that case, Travis Hunter, that was led by James.
30:45It's a player that all three of us identified
30:48as someone we really valued
30:50and thought was the best player in the draft by far.
30:54And for a long time, we were trying to figure out scenarios.
30:56How does he get to number five?
30:58Well, it was clear that was not going to happen.
31:00And then James came in one day and had the idea
31:03and the strategy of how to do it.
31:05The three of us talked through it at length,
31:08beat it up, pros, cons, everything else.
31:10And when we walked out of that room,
31:12we were lockstep together.
31:13This is the move.
31:14And then James went next to you, executed me.
31:16I gave him all the credit and did a great job
31:18of bringing it to life.
31:20You talk about James Glass, Tony.
31:21He talked about changing the culture,
31:23not necessarily with slogans and those things,
31:25but bringing the right people in.
31:27Tony, what kind of players are the right kind
31:29to be in this organization?
31:30Yeah, I love how you said that, Bucky,
31:32because we talk about culture a lot
31:33and obviously I value culture and it's important.
31:36But at the end of the day,
31:36your culture is what is lived out.
31:59You mentioned quite a bit this offseason by GM James Gladstone.
32:29And this guy has all of that, even off the field,
32:32in the locker room, in the team headquarters,
32:34the vibe, the juice, as they call it.
32:36And he brings that electric smile.
32:38That's part of the reason that the Jaguars drafted Travis Hunter.
32:42Also, guys, he's all football all the time.
32:45He loves fishing as well,
32:47but this is how much he's been locked in on football.
32:50He's yet to fish here in Jacksonville,
32:52which is a great place to fish for any fisherman.
32:55He even bought a boat, just hasn't used it yet.
32:57He will find plenty of time in February.
33:02The other hunter, Hunter Long, just dropped the ball,
33:06and so it's second down and 10.
33:08Jags at their 23-yard line, trailing by a point.
33:119.24 to play here in the first half.
33:14Hank Bigsby to the bottom of your screen,
33:16so an empty backfield for Nick Mullins.
33:19Mullins turns and fires it over the middle.
33:21This time it's caught, and it's a first down,
33:23and that's Trenton Irwin, who goes across the 35 to the 37,
33:29streaking for 15 yards, and a Jacksonville first down.
33:32Yeah, first down for Jacksonville to go.
33:34Empty formation.
33:35It clears the picture up for the quarterback.
33:38Nick Mullins is able to spot the weak matchup.
33:40Trenton Irwin wins on a quick slant.
33:42Big play, 13-yard game for a first down.
33:46And so Mullins gets four more,
33:48and he's got Bigsby in the backfield.
33:49Two receivers, tight to the formation.
33:54And here's the handoff to Bigsby, starting left now.
33:55Wants to cut it back.
33:56Steelers are all over it.
33:57He does manage to kind of submarine near the 39
34:01for a pickup of nearly two.
34:03Yeah, hard-nosed run.
34:05The one thing that we're seeing from the Jaguars,
34:07they're trying to avoid the negative plays in the running game.
34:10A little more downhill.
34:12Runners understand with discipline.
34:14They have to stick their nose in there and get the dirty yards,
34:16trying to avoid those long-yarder situations
34:18where you're behind the chains.
34:19The head coach told us he liked this matchup with the Steelers
34:21for opening day of the preseason
34:24because it gave him a chance to test his team's toughness.
34:27He wants a physically and mentally tough team.
34:30And the Jaguars are running the ball with that kind of toughness.
34:35Second and eight.
34:36Mullins turns and slings the ball.
34:37He's got a receiver.
34:38And Cephas makes the catch at the 44-yard line.
34:42Couldn't get away from the defender.
34:44It'll bring up third down and four after that five-yard pickup.
34:48You know, what's funny, Brian, is Lane Cohen has talked about
34:51wanting to have a physical football team, wanting to run the ball.
34:54But they're very balanced in their approach.
34:56We're seeing them run the football and show a commitment
34:58while also retaining the balance to keep the defense at bay.
35:02This is a nice approach so far from the play call.
35:05Parker Washington checks in.
35:07He's at the bottom of your screen with Irwin.
35:08Long the tight end now goes to join Joshua Cephas at the top.
35:13Mullins takes the snap and drops to throw.
35:15Under pressure.
35:15Turns and launches this one.
35:16And it is tipped and knocked away.
35:19Echols made sure that Trenton Irwin couldn't even get a beat on it.
35:23And the Jaguars will come up short and punt for the first time tonight.
35:27Yeah, this was a good play by the Pittsburgh defense.
35:30Jaguars will run a bit of a smash concept.
35:32Five-yard out with a corner.
35:34Nick Mullins was trying to find Trenton Irwin over the top.
35:37Corner did a good job of playing halfway in between.
35:39Made a great play to bat it down.
35:41Logan Cook, Pro Bowl punter a year ago.
35:43In my never-to-be-humble opinion, I think he's one of the best punters in pro football.
35:49Maybe the best.
35:49He's got a great leg.
35:51And this one is a perfect knuckleball.
35:55And it is caught.
35:56And the Jaguars, special, special teams, just came through big.
36:01Excellent tackle made there.
36:04And we're back after this in Jacksonville.
36:08Holding.
36:09Offense number 60.
36:10Penalties declined.
36:11Fourth down.
36:13First-time head coach working through the motions.
36:16He told us that for him, this was part of it.
36:19It was his preseason opener as well.
36:22Yeah, it is his preseason opener.
36:24Trying to work through all the mechanics of running the entire operation
36:28as opposed to just one side of the ball.
36:29And the more reps that he has as a head coach, the better he would be
36:33in terms of managing, delegating, being able to own different parts of the program.
36:38So Trammell stands near the Jaguars' 30-yard line.
36:42And he's been impressive returning the ball tonight, both on kickoffs and punts.
36:47Here's a left-footed boot.
36:49Boy, is that a booming kick.
36:51Trammell retreats to about the 18.
36:52Makes the catch.
36:53Looking for the right side.
36:54Now tries to stutter step and find room up the numbers.
36:57Can't quite get free.
36:587-6 Steelers lead.
37:00And we're back after these messages from your local.
37:02Bolt of lightning when he finds room to run.
37:06Play action.
37:07Pressure coming.
37:08Mullin steps, turns, and throws.
37:09He's got a receiver.
37:10And it's dropped.
37:12Irwin dropped it at the 50-yard line.
37:14Incompletes.
37:16Man, that was a strike.
37:19Great play by Nick Mullin.
37:20Stepping up in the pocket.
37:21Waiting for Trenton Irwin to uncover.
37:23Great route by Irwin.
37:24Just didn't finish it the way that you would like to see a wide receiver finish.
37:28Right in his hands.
37:29Perfect throw.
37:30Just a drop by the veteran.
37:32And it brings up second down and 10 at the 25-yard line here.
37:355-24 to play in the first half.
37:39Jaguars have had a couple of drops tonight.
37:41A couple of penalties have thrown their drives off kilter.
37:45In the shotgun now.
37:46Moving Tootin to his left.
37:48And Long to his right.
37:50And here's the handoff to the rookie.
37:54And he finds some room.
37:55Look at him go.
37:56He's across the 30 to the 31.
37:58Nearly the 32.
38:00And it's a run of almost six yards.
38:02Yeah, a lot of excitement over Tootin.
38:04The Virginia Tech standout by wearing North Carolina A&T.
38:07Has big time juice.
38:09The ability to take it a distance from anywhere on the field.
38:11But what you saw there.
38:12The patience, the balance, the body control.
38:14To get from the front side to the back side.
38:16And gain positive yards.
38:18Clock running under five minutes here.
38:21One of the things that the head coach told us is he wants to seem to be efficient.
38:24Get up to the line of scrimmage.
38:26And get set.
38:28So that they can see what the defense is doing.
38:30And they're filling all the gaps right now.
38:32On third down.
38:34Mullins turns and launches.
38:35And he's got a receiver.
38:36And this one is incomplete.
38:38He was looking for Parker Washington on a wheel route.
38:42And Bishop read that one perfectly.
38:44Yeah, this is unfortunate because this was a perfect pick-rub situation.
38:49Parker Washington comes free on this rail route.
38:52Delivers it.
38:53If Nick Mullins can just push it down the field a little more.
38:56This should have been an explosive play for the Jaguars.
38:59Concept was great.
39:00Execution was good.
39:01Up until the point, we had to throw and catch.
39:04And so here's Logan Cook.
39:06Backed up slightly.
39:07Miss own 17-yard line.
39:10That's the first three and out in four possessions by the Jaguars tonight.
39:17Williams is back to retrieve this one for the Steelers.
39:20Beautiful driven punt.
39:22And Williams has to fade and then drop back inside the 10-yard line.
39:26Trying to get outside.
39:27Jaguars have him cornered.
39:29A flag is thrown.
39:30They don't put him on the ground.
39:31Steelers returning this one across the 30 to the 35-yard line.
39:35The Jaguars missed an opportunity to get him inside the 20.
39:38It's a 59-yard boot and a 15-yard return.
39:42And Logan Cook is the one who made the stop.
39:45We'll see what his penalty says.
39:47During the return, holding, receiving team number 38.
39:5110-yard penalty.
39:52First down.
39:54Timeout.
39:557-6 in to run the ball.
39:57And you don't trade for DK Metcalf.
39:59They're going to throw it.
39:59Here's Skylar Thompson handing the ball off.
40:02It's a short game for the Steelers.
40:03A little extra effort there makes it.
40:05About a 4-yard pickup for Caleb Johnson.
40:08The Steelers drove down the field on their opening possession.
40:13And had four first downs en route to the touchdown to Darnell Washington.
40:16They've only gotten one sense.
40:17So the Jaguars have figured a few things out.
40:19Yeah, they have.
40:20After maybe getting some of the butterflies and the kinks out,
40:23they've really settled in.
40:24We've seen the zone have a little tighter coverage on the receivers down the field.
40:28And then they've been really solid against the running game.
40:31Second down and six.
40:34Jaguars adjusting up front.
40:36Down a couple of defensive tackles with injuries to Eric Armstead and Mason Smith.
40:41A lot of young guys have gotten playing time tonight.
40:44Here's the handoff.
40:45And Johnson finds yardage out near the 24.
40:48He'll be very close to a first down.
40:50It'll bring up third down and short.
40:52Emmanuel Obat, the veteran defensive end, most recently with the Miami Dolphins,
40:56makes that stop.
40:58Yeah, Brian, you bring up one of the biggest issues when it comes to the personnel on the team.
41:03The defensive tackle position, the injuries, being without Eric Armstead,
41:07being without Mason Smith, is a completely different team.
41:10And we know great defenses are built right in the middle.
41:13Hopefully those guys can get back soon.
41:15Thompson in the shotgun for Pittsburgh on third down in New York.
41:20Slides a receiver in motion.
41:22And it's a high snap.
41:23He gets it down to the back.
41:24And I believe it's first down yardage running right across the 30 to the 31.
41:29And it is for Johnson at the 26.
41:39Jordan Jefferson, second-year defensive tackle, makes the stop.
41:42Ticking down to the two-minute warning here.
41:50Well, it feels like it's been a really quick first half in the preseason open.
41:54Steelers up 7-6.
41:56First and 10 at their own, 26.
41:59And Thompson is up.
42:02Marking out.
42:04Instructions.
42:05And Caleb Johnson is caught in the backfield.
42:10And I thought they were going to get Miles Cole with a face mask.
42:13And it appears that's exactly what they've decided.
42:17Yeah.
42:18He reached up.
42:20Got in there.
42:20But the penetration was great.
42:22Made him bounce.
42:23He had a negative play.
42:24Just got to make sure you try to keep your hands in place.
42:26Ever play, sometimes those things happen.
42:28Yeah.
42:28Miles Cole, a second-year defensive end.
42:32There were two fouls on the play.
42:34One by each team.
42:36Personal foul.
42:37Face mask.
42:38Defense number 58.
42:40Holding.
42:41Offense number 83.
42:43Those penalties offset.
42:45Repeat the down.
42:48I think he missed 59.
42:49Because this...
42:5158 is DeJuan Smoot.
42:53He's off the field.
42:54So it'll be 1st and 10 again.
42:59But they won't even get a playoff.
43:00Yes, it is the middle half.
43:02The 2-minute warning.
43:032-minute warning.
43:042-minute warning.
43:04The first half.
43:057-6.
43:07The Steelers lead here at Everbank Stadium.
43:10And we're back after this short message from our friends at Everbank.
43:151st and 10 at their own 26-yard line.
43:21Scott Thompson will play action deep in the pocket.
43:23He's got time.
43:24And he dumps it out.
43:25It's caught by Johnson.
43:26And the rookie has got it across the 30-yard line to the 31 for a pickup of 5.
43:39Steelers hurrying up here.
43:41Working on the 2-minute.
43:43And looking left.
43:44Thompson turns and throws.
43:45He's got a wide-open receiver.
43:46And it's a 1st down.
43:47And out of bounds goes Brandon Johnson.
43:49Yeah, nice.
43:52Nice play by them.
43:53They're working underneath areas of coverage.
43:55Right now, Jacksonville is trying to keep everything in front.
43:58Not surrender to big play.
44:00And then as they get closer across the midfield, they'll tighten up.
44:02Kane of 8.
44:03Thompson deep in the pocket.
44:04Now fired over the middle.
44:05It is wide open.
44:06Talk about an explosive play.
44:07To the 39-yard line.
44:09Scotty Miller holds it in.
44:11And the Steelers are all of a sudden looking like they're in business.
44:14But if his tackle is short, we'll just kind of run into the half.
44:19This gives them a chance.
44:20The ball is close enough to midfield.
44:22Where if you do hit a big play, Cam Little's range is significant.
44:25He may have an opportunity to try a long-distance field goal if you want to get that done.
44:29How long-distance would you think with Little?
44:33Man, I think if you can get to the 35-yard line, 52 is what we're talking about.
44:38That's reasonable.
44:39How about unreasonable?
44:41Ooh, I think we could probably get to the 40 and see.
44:44Mullins under pressure, avoids, turns, throws.
44:47It's incomplete.
44:48I was thinking a little further than that.
44:49Oh, you think he can get 62 if we get to the 45-yard line?
44:53Do I think he can hit it?
44:54I know he can hit it.
44:55We can hit it in the game, right?
44:56In live action.
44:58His long is 59.
45:02Mullins had no time.
45:04Scrambling, trying to throw.
45:07Steelers are all over him.
45:08Five seconds left.
45:11How aggressive are you being?
45:13Well, I mean, if you're trying to get a long-distance field goal range, you can try to quick out those things.
45:17Depends on how soft they're playing, but it's going to have to be out quick.
45:23Littles hit him from well beyond 50 yards in warm-ups, but this is not going to get it done.
45:30It is going to get us to the end of the first half.
45:3414-6.
45:36Before the clock expired, timeout, Jacksonville, their second.
45:41No, no, no, no.
45:4230-second timeout with one second left.
45:45Remember I asked you, how long would you try?
45:48I mean, this is – holy smokes.
45:5270-yarder?
45:53I know.
45:54And it's fun in a preseason game.
45:56But they do have a lot of confidence in this kid's leg.
46:0370?
46:0470 yards?
46:0570 yards?
46:06Yeah, why not?
46:11Okay, now here's the thing.
46:12There's no one back.
46:13One second left.
46:14But in a normal situation, you've got to make sure that your field goal team is ready to cover
46:18because the return could be on.
46:20You were talking 52-55.
46:23Liam Cohen's thinking, why not go 70?
46:2470-yard kick?
46:27Listen, we're not joking.
46:28This kid can really drill the ball.
46:32Holy smokes.
46:33They got a shot.
46:34He just kicked a 70-yard field goal.
46:39Are you kidding me?
46:40That's crazy.
46:41I've never seen that.
46:43The NFL record.
46:46That would be an NFL record.
46:48This is the end of the first half.
46:49Holy smokes.
46:51That's unbelievable.
46:5370 yards.
46:55Great kick.
46:56Hey, you're thinking mid-range, Bucky Brooks.
46:58You're thinking mid-range.
47:00That changes everything going forward.
47:04That is unbelievable.
47:07Justin Tucker holds the NFL record with a 66-yarder.
47:13That doesn't count because it's preseason.
47:15But that's a sports center highlight.
47:1870 yards.
47:19I've never even seen a 70-yard field goal attempt.
47:25We'll get some NFL veterans in the booth.
47:26Have you ever seen a 70-yard attempt?
47:29Wow.
47:30I mean, Logan Cook knew it was good the minute he hit it.
47:37That's unbelievable.
47:38Unbelievable.
47:40It sends a message, doesn't it?
47:41Oh, it changes everything now.
47:43When you're Liam Coyne, you're beginning to plot out points and where you need to get to in certain areas of the field.
47:50Hopefully we can see improvement in the second half.
47:52Listen, it doesn't matter what happens the rest of the game.
47:55That is the story.
47:56And it doesn't count, obviously, in the record books.
47:59Justin Tucker will hold that still with his 66-yarder for the Ravens against Detroit.
48:04But I should point out, that one hit the crossbar and bounced in.
48:07This one would have been good for 72.
48:09I mean, it was easy.
48:10Easy money.
48:11You look, you saw it.
48:12It was coming.
48:13I didn't think they were kicking, but great job by Cam Little.
48:16And here's Little putting this one into the end zone, and it'll come out to the 35-yard line.
48:21I just, I've watched him up in the practice field to know what he's capable of.
48:28And Liam's an aggressive-minded coach, so I thought you were going to say 60.
48:34He'd go 60, and I would have said, yeah, that's pretty aggressive.
48:36Let's go.
48:3670?
48:37I didn't think that.
48:38Never, but it goes back to what we talked about earlier.
48:41Communication and trust.
