11 August - National weather forecast presented by Honor Criswick.
Transcript
00:00Hello there, good afternoon. Temperatures are on the up with the fourth heat wave of
00:05the summer well underway. But why is this? Well, it's all to do with our bigger picture
00:10and our set up. So low pressure situated to the southwest, high pressure across continental
00:15Europe and that means a south to south easterly flow across the UK. So we're dragging in that
00:21warmer air for mainland Europe and at times it is going to be particularly hot across
00:25parts of the south and southeast. Though today it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to
00:30be dry and sunny. Across Scotland, for example, plenty of cloud here, some outbreaks of rain
00:35drifting their way northeastwards. Once again across northern parts of England, a chance
00:39we could see more cloud, possibly even some showery outbreaks. And later on into the afternoon,
00:44we just need to keep an eye on this system pushing up from the southwest. Parts of Wales,
00:49Devon and Cornwall will start to see more cloud later and a chance we could even hear the odd
00:54rumble of thunder too. But the main story of today is that things are set to still continue
00:59to be quite hot, particularly across central areas of England. Parts of the east and southeast
01:04too are expecting to see highs of around 31 degrees Celsius. Still warm across the north,
01:09even where we see more cloud. Temperatures widely in the mid-20s here. Later on into the
01:16evening and overnight, we'll eventually see this area of rain across Scotland clear northeastwards,
01:20moving into the northern isles. And then once again, this band of clouds, possible showers,
01:25possible heavy, thundery showers drifting its way northeastwards into parts of Wales and central
01:30parts of England through the early hours of the morning. But what we are going to notice
01:34into the overnight period, it's set to be warm and quite muggy, particularly across parts of
01:39central England, parts of the south. Some towns and cities not really dropping much past
01:4318 to 19 degrees Celsius. So it's certainly going to be fairly warm overnight. A little fresher across
01:48northern areas, but even still here, towns and cities around 13 to 15 degrees Celsius.
01:55So a warm and possibly quite muggy start. Still some outbreaks of rain clearing the northern isles,
02:01eventually sweeping their way northeastwards through the course of the morning. But into tomorrow,
02:05it's likely we'll see less cloud around. Still a chance of some showers as that band moves its way
02:10northeastwards, these being quite sporadic in nature. And overall, many of us are going to see
02:15much more of those blue skies and hot sunshine. But this time, the temperatures, a little bit of
02:20a change as to where we see the highest ones. Central areas of England, parts of Wales are
02:25widely going to be pushing into the low to mid 30s, even northern parts of England, mid to high 20s,
02:31and parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland too. So Tuesday, there is going to be more sunshine around
02:35and temperatures up by a degree or two. So it is going to feel particularly hot where we do see
02:40those sunny spells. And then into the evening, we do have a band of cloud just starting to clip in
02:44to the far northwest of Scotland. But otherwise, many areas are going to see quite a pleasant evening,
02:49largely dry, plenty of clear skies and a continuation of those warm and muggy nights.
02:55Then for the rest of the week, we still find ourselves with low pressure to the west,
02:58high pressure across mainland Europe. So we'll continue to see that southerly flow at times,
03:03high pressure largely dominating. So mostly dry, settled. There's still going to be lots of sunshine
03:08for the rest of the week. The peak of the temperatures likely on Tuesday, but even for the rest of the
03:12week, it is still going to be above average, so feeling warm. But of course, for more updates
03:17on the week ahead weather, you can catch Alex Birkhill later on YouTube.
