15 January - National evening forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Hello, ice and fog patches likely to be a problem for the morning commute.
00:06But before we get there, some heavy rain still lingering through Thursday evening over eastern England.
00:11It is on its way out, but it's been a very soggy day over parts of the Midlands and eastern England.
00:16That weather system also generating some gusty winds through Thursday evening before finally clearing out into the North Sea.
00:23Following on behind, quite a few showers for Wales and southwest England, but many places becoming dry.
00:28With the clearer skies across Scotland, northern England, that's where we'll see the lowest temperatures.
00:33Quite a widespread frost here and also some thick mist and fog patches are likely to form.
00:39Temperatures dropping down to about freezing or a degree or so below in towns and cities.
00:44But where there's snow lying on the ground, certainly across parts of Scotland, temperatures could be as low as minus 5 to minus 8.
00:50Not quite as cold further south, a bit too much cloud around here, certainly over eastern areas.
00:54But generally, quite a murky, misty start to Friday.
00:59Overall, a much drier day over the Midlands, East Anglia and the southeast compared to Thursday.
01:04But still a few showers drifting in here.
01:06The heavier showers further west, the western side of Wales, southwest England, the eastern side of Northern Ireland and parts of southwest Scotland.
01:13Seeing a feed of potentially quite heavy showers, even the odd rumble of thunder is possible.
01:18Elsewhere, many places will be dry.
01:20I can't promise sunshine everywhere.
01:23It should get a bit brighter.
01:24But at this time of year, it often stays quite dank and quite dreary.
01:28So some places just staying misty and murky throughout the day.
01:31And that'll make a big impact on the temperatures, of course.
01:34If we see a bit of brightness, we could see those numbers jumping up to 7, 8, maybe 9 or 10 across parts of the south.
01:40But for many places, temperatures close to or a touch below average, particularly if it does stay fairly drab and murky.
01:46And certainly feeling cooler when these heavy showers come along across parts of the west.
01:51They'll continue to feed in on this southerly wind through Friday evening.
01:56So a continued risk of the odd rumble of thunder.
01:58Some heavy showers perhaps generating more widely over the Midlands and southern England as we head into the early hours of Saturday morning.
02:05Perhaps also some feeding into East Anglia and drifting up into southern Scotland.
02:09It's a bit of a messy picture as we head into the weekend.
02:12All thanks to this area of low pressure, we call a flabby low, so not particularly intense, but not really moving very far.
02:19Just kind of hanging out across the Republic of Ireland, generating a southerly breeze, quite a lot of clouds and a few showers.
02:27I suspect many places will be largely dry through Saturday.
02:30But there will be some showers drifting north from northern England into Scotland, some continuing through this area into the east of Northern Ireland and affecting West Wales.
02:39Showers further east, few and far between.
02:41As I said, many places dry.
02:43But again, I suspect with light winds, it's hard to shift the low cloud once it's come in.
02:49So can't promise a lot of sunshine.
02:51Temperatures again close to average might squeak into double digits across the southwest.
02:56And it's a messy picture as we go into Sunday as well.
02:59If you want more details on that, check our full weekend video with Alex Burkill that is available on our YouTube channel.
