On Thursday's edition of Zolak and Bertrand, the guys reacted to the news that ESPN bought the rights to NFL Redzone. The guys then questioned what's in store for the product going forward.
Transcript
00:00uh red zone is now owned by espn no longer owned by the nfl and apparently we won't notice any
00:09changes but what's happening is the network is going to be owned by espn that's it espn's becoming
00:16a conglomerate and taking that over is that good news bad news how do you feel about it
00:20do you like scott hansen yeah i love scott hansen is he going with it is he gonna work for espn
00:24scott hansen just re-upped his contract and he's he's good good i think he does a good job at that
00:31that's a tough gig he absolutely does bouncing around i have people rip him in that like oh
00:36no he that's a tough thing i've never heard anybody rip scott hansen scott hansen is impeccable
00:41seriously who's ever ripped scott hansen for his work on red zone has anyone done that no i don't
00:47think so universally well liked i think yeah i mean probably has the highest approval rating of
00:51anybody in sports media he's fantastic at his job now red zone red zone itself is worthy of
00:59ripping because what they've started to do more than ever before is only show you when no one is
01:06in the red zone whatever the national game is four o'clock window if it's a cowboys game and no one's
01:11in the red zone they're only giving you that cowboys game and it's behind and that to me is annoying
01:17that to me is a problem for red zone because it's made it a product that is less than what it used
01:23to be yeah those restrictions they suck they used to do a better job of whipping around the league
01:27and and if you were flipping over from the national game you'd have a chance to see a couple minutes of
01:32a different game feel like they've really tightened that up and really clamped down on not doing that
01:37also i do think adding in commercials to that now is insane which they started last season yeah
01:44was the split screen ads last year that was awful something tells me it won't be split screen this
01:50time so espn acquires nfl network and other nfl media assets in exchange for a 10 equity stake in espn
02:01so they gave 10 of espn to the league in exchange for taking over the network and taking over
02:09uh red zone is what they're able to do that's how that all works which tells you how much of a
02:18behemoth espn still is
02:20that'll pay steven a and they're finally launching their app apparently their direct to consumer
02:28streaming service is finally about to launch
02:30which they have an app already and they had watch espn so it won't be that different but you'll be able
02:37to just sign up to be an espn subscriber and turn on espn through an app at any time right see the
02:43programming that's what's coming soon as opposed to espn 3 if you will right where you're clicking
02:50on a mac game like i often did you know to tune in on a saturday afternoon and watch watch my minute
02:56man so that's coming as well how are they going to do this year beetle i think it sucks though
03:02because it's just more consolidation of media period even though this was already a league-owned
03:07entity you're going to get less programming now as a result of this being the same company
03:12there's less and less and less going on there's less options who who's going to be what are you
03:20talking about umass i was asking how you oh i don't know uh there's always hope every year right
03:26that's right yep hope every single year new head coach
03:32got another promising head coach that they've hired my daughter wants to go for a tailgate this
03:38year trying to make that potentially work with the home game so any other fall plans
03:46gorgeous are we going to do it at a time of year that you can do some leaf peeping
03:50oh oh uh excellent farm stands you know the pumpkins and do they sell pies inside they do
03:56they really do i still get asked about that the pie thing it's amazing you do yep we talk about it
04:03too much we celebrate come up a couple times yeah they should actually they should you would think
04:10one of the salespeople would contact them for advertising right for the fall yeah for the fall
04:15apple picking um hay rides all that stuff coming up i could go do live i could show up live and shake
04:22hands he's the restaurant shake that hand there i'm seeing what happened there good i'm all set
04:29with that keep those hands to yourself the hands are fine it's the feet what what'd you do with your
04:35feet in the bathroom nothing feet it's just like you get stuff all over them in that you know
04:40did you take your shoes off before you went in there yeah it's comfortable in here make yourself
04:46comfortable yeah it's hot it's very hot
04:49remote from the honey pot yeah send dennis there oh dennis has been in nantucket for two days
04:59get ready for uh that one fulgur maz doing a remote show this afternoon today we're all checking
05:04maz actually made it over too it's already hopping there it's already hopping there yeah it's great
05:10gorgeous day like already getting hammered at the fairgrounds get hammered that's the name of the
05:17fairgrounds right yeah yeah yeah that's what i thought i was seeing some great uh memes of this
05:21whole red zone thing where they're like it's it's a picture of scott hansen and they're like get ready
05:25for seven hours of football free commercials i'm looking at a live shot
05:32of the table that is set up oh look at that how's it look special guests
05:39it looks great quite frankly that's what i think
05:46yeah all right i think dennis and hoodie ripped it up last night
05:53uh no no i don't like somewhere i don't think that they ripped it up last night no that was all
06:00work sure the hotel is excited to ask where can i get a burnt burger and a sprite good times
06:06always a good time dennis gotta hustle make the ferry to get back here do the game tomorrow
06:11i hope that ferry's on time hope he has a ticket maz was going down just for the day he's going
06:18down this morning coming back tonight quick trip a little day trip yeah yep a little day trip
06:24they could stay over at mike's right i don't know maybe he wasn't invited yeah wasn't he wasn't asked
06:31to stay over that's true at the compound right all right well i don't think they have the same
06:36relationship we have you know pudley's pub fairgrounds looks like things are uh pudley's pub are ready to go
06:43there they did pay for it so we're not gonna yeah no no have a good laugh go ahead zoe it's a great
06:52name yeah but he's getting things ready we are checking it out yeah looks good looks good uh josh
07:00and walpole what's up josh what's up guys a long time long time not one of beetles here callers
07:06but it is what it is uh just forget the real topic wanted to touch on the breslow thing
07:11uh it's important to remember that hindbloom deserves about 80 of the credit for what the
07:15red socks are doing this year uh secondly i want to talk about will campbell um he's 21 years old
07:22uh like last year every end when we drafted mac the whole topic about a starting quarterback coming
07:27out of the draft as a rookie is like do you sit him for a year and wait for him and i find it
07:31interesting how that's not a topic with the offensive line you expect this kid to get thrown into the
07:35fire and have success uh people already criticizing him about a week and a half in a training camp
07:41um and i think fans have to realize it's going to be bad before there's good uh especially when
07:45he's going to have max crosby miles garrett and tj watt early on in the season um so it's going to be
07:52baptized by fire but i think we need to cut the kids some slack and remember he's only 21 no we
07:56don't yeah i'm glad he brought this up because we had diana russini on we cut fourth overall pick
08:01slack now that's how we do no we don't no no and top 10 top 10 lineman top 10 lineman play can i quote you
08:07can i quote you from one of the first things you said on the show today yeah i thought we were
08:11better than this yeah i thought we were but go ahead so yeah number four pick you play uh like
08:16like drake may last year it was ridiculous he sat sorry um diana russini and we asked her like hey
08:24what are you hearing what are you hearing down there that the most pleasant surprise and one
08:27exciting things is about the offensive line so we all kind of i think chuckled at it because of
08:32like the reporting on it right and the marks and the grades and all that and you know we do a talk
08:37show every day for four hours um and i asked somebody else in the building about they said they
08:41heard the same thing so like this is a thing that it is being talked about down there i don't know
08:47if that's just like a confidence building thing like hey let's push that narrative to give these
08:51guys some confidence but they're liking what they're seeing i mean hey maybe maybe it's coming
08:58together i don't know look look look at how they looked in the red zone against um against the
09:02commanders in the joint we'll see you tomorrow night though see you tomorrow night yeah i mean
09:07there was another guy on the field yesterday laramie tunsell i believe he was 21 when he came into the
09:11nfl did he sit with his gas mask gas mask gas mask on they just let him sit in his room he was doing
09:17a hell of a bong hit the night he got drafted i think he was 21 i think he was a top he wasn't quite
09:21four he wasn't top five he was top top half of the draft yeah but he's a pick he's a high pick
09:26joe alt a year ago was 21 years old he said did everyone say cut him some slack he's going to be
09:32bad before he's good number three pick a year ago is that what they said about joe alt a year ago
09:36because they didn't say that about joe five ago they said he had a ton of experience at notre dame
09:40he's ready to play in the nfl what did mike rabel and elliot wolf and ryan cowden and anybody else who
09:45supported that pick when they made it what did they tell you a lot of starting experience at lsu he's
09:50ready to play in the nfl so we're going to find out if he's ready to play in the nfl and i won't be
09:54sitting here making excuses for him because i don't do that yep that's for you josh you can do
10:01that all you want but if he sucks we're gonna say hey he sucks you drafted him fourth and he can't
10:06block with that said he had a good day yesterday he did so if he's good we say he's good and
10:12yesterday he was he had a good day yesterday encouraging day for him yesterday so that makes
10:19up for some of the bad days he did have early in this camp he looked good did the job and did it in
10:23real live reps which is encouraging in the sense that maybe he's a guy who needs that
10:28and i don't blame any player for that for for not being able to be their best in practice that they
10:33need it to be to have something on the line to get the adrenaline going to be their best
10:38and he's got short arms so you know maybe he needs that adrenaline to get that extra
10:42eighth of an inch you know out stretch him out so get excited yeah stretch him out get him going
10:49yeah
10:53yeah
10:56yeah
10:57yeah
11:01yeah
11:06yeah
11:08yeah
