00:00This is our friend Catherine and she's going to show us how she surfs.
00:03Uh, I don't think this board is going to work for either rest.
00:06We need to get a different one.
00:07Okay, let's do that.
00:09And Catherine, does your wheelchair go in the water?
00:12No, you have a lot to learn. Let's go.
00:14So what is this that we are rolling on?
00:17Yeah, so this is just a beach access mat and it's great because
00:20it makes it really easy to push your wheelchair or your stroller or whatever over the sand.
00:24Out of curiosity, can we see what it's like if you're just in the sand?
00:27Sure, let's go for it.
00:28Yeah, I'm pretty stuck in here.
00:34You know, you can kind of move, but it takes a while.
00:36It would require a lot of energy too, right?
00:38Yeah, oh yeah.
00:38Yeah, I think I'd be too tired to surf.
00:40I thought these were just like, oh, you know, nice to walk on the, you know, beach.
00:44Well, I think they're nice for everybody, right?
00:45It's always easier for you to walk on this than sand too.
00:48Everybody wins when we make the world more accessible.
00:50Yes!
00:51Let's go get our energy up and get an acai bowl before surfing.
00:54So, Katherine, how are we actually going to get to the acai bowl place?
00:58Um, well, my car has plenty of space, so I'll just drive it though.
01:01Wait, you can drive?
01:02Yeah, I'll show you how.
01:04Oh.
01:05I'll get the wheelchair in the back.
01:07Got it.
01:08Yeah.
01:09So, I keep my wheelchair in the trunk because I can actually walk a little bit, but most
01:13wheelchairs are probably going to keep it up in the front with them.
01:16This is how I like to drive.
01:18Okay, interesting.
01:19I didn't know that you could drive.
01:21Yeah, yeah, I think it's, people are kind of shocked to hear that, but it's pretty easy.
01:26These are my hand controls.
01:27This is a lever here that you push forward for brake and then you pull back for gas.
01:33And then this knob here just makes it so you can steer with one hand.
01:37Oh, okay.
01:38Yeah, yeah.
01:39Okay, so you're driving with one hand on the wheel and then one hand on the...
01:42And then one hand on the gas and brake.
01:44And is this like an attachment that you can add to any car?
01:47Yeah, yeah.
01:48So, you can pretty much adapt them for any car, which is great.
01:51So, I guess I want to know a little bit more about the back story.
01:54Why do you use a wheelchair?
01:56I use a wheelchair because I have something called cerebral palsy, which is something that you're
02:01born with.
02:02It affects your muscles, it just makes them really tight and weak.
02:07As you see, I can walk a little bit, but it's just really not safe or effective.
02:11So, are you saying that using a wheelchair is more convenient for you?
02:14You know, it kind of started out as like something that just made my life a little bit easier,
02:19but it's really, has become more like an extension of my body almost.
02:24Because I don't go anywhere without it.
02:25We're going to get some off-laying goals so we can get our energy up for surfing.
02:29Because those waves look pretty gnarly, so...
02:31They do look big.
02:32Yeah, especially when they're going to come hit you in the face.
02:35Get ready for the GoPro footage later today.
02:39Okay, got the fruits from God.
02:43So, how long do you normally surf for?
02:45It depends.
02:46You know, I could be out there for a couple hours.
02:48Sometimes if the ocean is really rough and I'm getting beat up, I'll be like 20 minutes
02:52and I'm like, I'm done.
02:53I've had moments where I've just like broken down in the water and cried.
02:56I'm like, why can't I paddle to get a wave?
02:58Definitely.
02:59There's some times when the ocean really isn't working with you.
03:01So, are you saying that when you go surfing it's different than when I go surfing?
03:05The thing about adaptive surfing, especially when you're first starting out, is it's
03:09really like a team sport.
03:10You need a lot of help to get out into the water, to catch a wave.
03:13I'm here to see how your friends help.
03:15I don't know what that looks like currently, so we'll find out later.
03:18So now, I think it's time to get some wetsuits and surfboards and the waves.
03:23The final step.
03:24Almost there.
03:27The wetsuits.
03:28Got to get something warm.
03:30They don't get cold.
03:31Turn it over.
03:31This is the outside.
03:32Okay.
03:33Zippers in the back, not in the front.
03:35Cool.
03:36So far, you listened?
03:37Got it.
03:38If not, you'll let me know.
03:39Snowboard.
03:40Okay.
03:41Zach, is this a paddleboard?
03:43Huh?
03:43This is a paddleboard, not a surfboard.
03:44No, it is a surfboard.
03:45What do you think about this surfboard?
03:47I think this surfboard is way better for you than the scary little one that you had
03:50on the beach.
03:51That's a good point.
03:52Alright.
03:53So what is going on right now?
03:55I'm doing a little trick where you put a plastic bag on your foot and hopefully it
04:01makes it easier to slide the wetsuit on.
04:03You want to maybe help me with this actually?
04:04Of course.
04:05Request for help.
04:06Hold it open so I can get my foot in there.
04:10Oh, so this kind of just helps it go.
04:12Yeah, so because I can't move my feet, it makes it really difficult to get a wetsuit
04:18on.
04:19Wetsuits in general are just so tough to put on.
04:21It's like, okay, this is the fun part.
04:24Oh, these are tight.
04:27Oh, yeah.
04:28Oh, that's great.
04:30I'm still curious to how you surf.
04:33That question hasn't been answered yet.
04:35We're almost there.
04:36How are you feeling right now?
04:37Oh, I'm excited to get out there.
04:39The waves look a little bit big, but I think we can handle it.
04:42It's happening.
04:43Here we go.
04:44So where's your surfboard?
04:46It's right here.
04:47Oh.
04:48Yeah.
04:49It's my buddy, John.
04:50What's up, John?
04:51Nice to meet you.
04:52Nice to meet you, too.
04:53Adaptive surfing is oftentimes a team sport.
04:54And so this guy is on my team.
04:56Is this like a surfboard that I would have or what's the difference with this?
04:59It's a little bit different.
05:00So it's got handles here so I can hold onto it, don't fall off.
05:03And then this is kind of scooped out to keep me hopefully locked on.
05:07It's designed so you lay down on it.
05:09Got it.
05:10Okay, so you're going to surf laying down.
05:11So I'm not, yeah.
05:12It's like advanced bodyboarding.
05:14Let's do it.
05:15Let's do it.
05:16Here we go.
05:17Here we go.
05:18I'm excited.
05:19We've been building up a lot of anticipation for this surf session.
05:22What we have here is the beach wheelchair.
05:24So this floats in the water?
05:26It will, yeah.
05:27It'll get us all the way down to the shore's edge.
05:28Shout out to Adaptive Freedom Foundation for letting us borrow this beach wheelchair.
05:32So what's going on now?
05:33So I'm just going to, why don't I just transfer you?
05:35One, two.
05:36Perfect.
05:37Alright.
05:38Woo!
05:39Wow.
05:40This is how you get in the sand.
05:43It's happening, guys.
05:44We're going to get in the water.
05:45I've learned so much in this video.
05:46I didn't know anything about beach wheelchairs.
05:48I'm still curious to see how she actually, like, gets from the wheelchair into the surfboard
05:53and surfs.
05:54We're about to find that out.
05:55Make sure to subscribe.
05:56I'm going to get you out a little ways.
05:59We're getting in the water.
06:00We're about to find out how people in the wheelchair surf.
06:03Let's do it.
06:04Okay.
06:05This is it.
06:06We're getting in the water.
06:07We've got some assistance.
06:08We've got the floating beach wheelchair.
06:09It's in the water right now.
06:10And I think they're going to switch into the surfboard.
06:12Oh my god.
06:13Woo!
06:14What?
06:15Why are we here?
06:16It's too big for us.
06:17Woo!
06:22It's going to be a better day.
06:23These are pretty big.
06:25Alright.
06:26We're in the water right now.
06:27Now it's time for the hard parts.
06:28Paddle out.
06:37Oh boy.
06:38Oh boy.
06:39Paddling is so tough.
06:40I'm so weak in this.
06:41Yeah, me too.
06:42How do the handlebars help?
06:43Nice.
06:44Yeah.
06:45Oh my gosh, yeah.
06:46For the last time, if I try to turn, I'll just fall right off.
06:47Yeah.
06:48Is this the one?
06:49Oh yeah.
06:50Okay.
06:51Uh oh.
06:52Uh oh.
06:53Uh oh.
06:54I missed it.
06:55This is the last one.
06:56Yeah?
06:57Okay.
06:58This is it.
06:59I'm going for the last one.
07:00Yeah?
07:01Okay.
07:02This is it.
07:03I'm going for the last one.
07:04Yeah?
07:05Okay.
