00:10this is a little bit longer chapter than last week so first corinthians 9
00:18verse 1 says am i not an apostle am i not free have i not seen jesus christ our lord
00:28are not ye my my work in the lord if i be not an apostle unto others yet doubtless i am to you
00:36for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the lord keep your finger there and go a couple pages
00:42over to first corinthians 15. so one of the things that irritates me sometimes is preachers or pastors
00:51who try to lift themselves up and they use especially when they use this term an apostle
00:56i remember this guy um he came out here he was doing running some kind of uh like a children's
01:06home or something uh in florida and his name was apostle jones i didn't know much about the bible
01:14because i would have said man you sure do look good to be 2 000 years old because we're going to see
01:18the definition we saw it a minute ago we're going to see a real more more of a definition in first
01:24corinthians 15 verse 5 and this is when jesus is talking i'm sorry paul's talking about jesus
01:31and he was seen talking about jesus as cephas which is peter then of the 12 after that he was seen of
01:38above 500 brethren at once of whom the greater part remain and to this present but some are falling
01:46asleep after that he was seen of james then of all the apostles and last of all he was seen of me
01:55also as of one born out of due time for i am the least of the apostles that am not meet to be called
02:04an apostle because i persecuted the church of god so there's no more apostles that nobody can call
02:11themselves apostle i know that the bible talks about he gives people uh preachers and pastors and
02:17and disciples and apostles not going to happen anymore because the definition of an apostle is
02:25anybody who saw jesus christ in what that his resurrected state and nobody can do that anymore
02:33it's done with uh i also find it interesting that he's 500 people at one time saw him
02:40now this is the only place in the bible that i know of that it talks about this but we know it's
02:45true uh but that's the definition definition of apostle if you go back to first corinthians 9
02:53you'll see he said am i not an apostle and then he says am i not free have i not seen jesus christ
03:00our lord so he did see jesus if you remember i believe it's acts 9 when he saw him and jesus blinded him
03:09uh that is when he saw him he was the last one to see him in his resurrected state after that
03:15he's at the right hand of the father excuse me this is one of my pet peeves when people try to lift
03:24themselves up oh that's all it is is just pride calling yourself an apostle something that you're
03:31really not it's just lack of understanding the bible too uh mine answer to them that do examine me
03:37is this have we not power to eat and drink have we not power to lead about a sister a wife as well
03:46as other apostles as a brethren as the lord and of cephas which is peter so apparently by reading this
03:53they did not think that paul was good enough and you got to understand his past we just saw in first
04:03corinthians 15 he said that he persecuted the church for a lot of these people in corinth they knew
04:07that so they're questioning his apostleship they're questioning his uh loyalty to lord jesus christ
04:15and he's trying to explain to them that he has the same spirit he has the same holy spirit
04:21the same lord is that that they're serving and the same one that he's serving and he's trying to tell
04:27them that trying to um make it where they understand that he does have the right he does have the right
04:35to judge them in the things they did last chapter we saw he was judging them about eating things that
04:41were sacrificed to idols and he's telling them i do have that ability because i'm a brother in christ just
04:48like you or i only and barnabas have not we powered a forbear working um
04:57who goeth a willfare at any time of his own charges who planteth a vineyard and eateth not the fruit
05:07thereof or who feedeth a flock and eateth not of the milk of the flock so he's saying that you know
05:13there's there's no farmer out there that grows something corn or weed or whatever and does not
05:20eat it um it's just like if you grow a garden you're gonna eat it you grow some tomatoes or some
05:26cucumbers you're gonna eat it and that's what he's saying he's trying to tell him that because
05:32he is an apostle he has a right according to god's word to live off of the gospel what he's talking
05:41about is that um whatever they bring into the church at corinth he has a right to that for his
05:49ministry um say all these things as a man or say it's not the law that the same is also for it is
05:58written in the law of moses thou shall not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn
06:06does god take care of her oxen keep your finger there and go to deuteronomy 25
06:11deuteronomy 25 this is where this is found
06:18deuteronomy 25 verse 4 thou shall not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn what is that
06:39talking about it's talking about when you're having animals that are producing and they're
06:45treading out the corn or they're plowing the field or whatever because they're doing something good
06:51you don't muzzle them means you don't put them in the barn and keep them doing if they're producing
06:56something if they're plowing a field if they're grinding a millstone or whatever you don't put
07:03them and say hey he's doing this we're going to leave him out no you use them you try to you know
07:09you try to use them as much as you can that's what he's talking about it's not that he's talking about
07:13putting a muzzle over them where they can't do it it's not where they put a muzzle over the animal
07:18that they can't do anything i go about the first corinthians uh that's what he's saying he's saying
07:24you know not to put a muzzle on him because he's bringing people to the gospel he's preaching
07:29um and he's saying does not god take care of her oxen or saith he altogether for our sakes for our
07:37sakes no doubt this is written that he that ploweth should plow in hope and he that threshes
07:44threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope so if you've ever planted anything whether it be a
07:51garden or a food plot or or whatever crops you know when you throw those seeds in the ground and
07:58you bury them there's a aspect of hope you don't know if it's going to grow the seeds i mean this day
08:04in time they may be genetically modified and they may grow and someone may not but even back then not
08:10all seeds will turn into anything because a seed has to die for something to grow into it so sometimes
08:18they just don't work that's what he's saying is that when you pluck when you throw seeds you're plowing
08:23in hope and hope that something grows and he said if you're doing anything else it's just like the gospel
08:29you're doing that and hope that what you're doing is whether getting somebody saved or trying to bring them
08:37closer to god or whatever he said if we have sown unto you spiritual things is it a great thing that we shall
08:45reap you carnal things if others be partakers of this power over you are not we rather nevertheless we have not
08:52use this power but suffer all things which means allow lest we should hinder the gospel of christ he's
08:58saying look i'm out here preaching the gospel in hopes that somebody will get saved do i know that it's
09:05going to happen no he said i don't know i'm hoping these things are doing it but just because he's hoping
09:11doesn't mean that he stops doing it uh there's no guarantee you know uh do you not know that that they
09:20which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple and they which wait at the altar or
09:25partakers with with the altar even so that the lord ordained that they would preach the gospel should
09:31live of the gospel so first place i want you to go to is leviticus 6
09:36goes back all the way to the old testament to the levitical priesthood
09:43of where the priest his family they lived of what was brought to the altar let me show that to you
09:53leviticus 6 verse 14
09:57and this law of the meat offering talking about a food offering we're not it's just not flesh it's it
10:05could be some kind of bread or whatever the sons of aaron so aaron at this time is the high priest
10:11and his sons are help him in the daily administration of the the temple shall offer it before the lord
10:20before the altar and he shall take of his handful of the flour of the meat and of the oil thereof and
10:28all the frankincense which is upon the meat offering and shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet
10:32savor even the memorial of it unto the lord so every time i've read this i've seen frankincense i smell
10:40it i know somebody has a piece of it and smell it to cook something in it is just kind of strange to
10:47me maybe it's different when you cook it because it's got a it does have a sweet smell to it um
10:53but i guess that's what they did that's what the lord wanted done so that's what they did
10:57and remainder thereof so the remainder of what they give as an offering
11:02shall aaron and his sons eat with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place in the court of
11:10the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it it shall not be bacon with leaven which is yeast
11:17have given it unto them for their portions of my offerings made by fire it is most holy as is the sin
11:25offering and the trespass offering all the males all among the children of aaron shall eat of it it
11:31shall be a statute forever in your generations concerning the offerings of the lord made by fire
11:37everyone that touches them shall be holy so if you know anything about what jesus christ did this is
11:46what it's talking about talking about the unleavened bread uh a lot of times yeast or leaven has to do
11:54with sin that was the whole idea of having the unleavened bread because the sacrifice is without sin
12:00for sin and what i'm trying to show you here is that whatever was remaining i'm sorry remaining of
12:08the altar that's what they ate they took part in what was given to the tabernacle as an offering
12:16whatever was left they lived off the tabernacle um now go to luke 10
12:23because we saw a verse where paul said basically that it was ordained by the lord which is talking about jesus
12:34so we need to see where the lord ordained this look at luke 10 verse 3
12:42go your ways behold i send you forth as lambs among wolves
12:50carried neither purse nor script nor shoes and salute no man by the way
12:59so they're saying look don't care you you change purse or money or shoes just walk just go don't even
13:08don't even say hello to people and into whatsoever house you enter first say peace be to this house
13:15and if the son of peace be there your peace shall rest upon it if not it shall turn to you again
13:22so if you go to a house and you talk to them and say hey i'm here blah blah blah and they say hey we like
13:30you come on in stay what what is supposed to happen they're supposed to stay there and in that same
13:36house remain eating and drinking such thing as they give for the laborer is worthy of his hire go
13:43not from house to house so he's saying look you stay at that house and you do what you got to do get
13:49them saved and then but he's saying don't go live house to house supposed to stay in that one house
13:55because they've showed you hospitality they've showed you peace and heal the sick oh i'm sorry and
14:04in whatsoever the city you enter and they receive you each such thing as they're set before you
14:10and heal the sick that are therein and say to them the kingdom of god is nigh unto you
14:16but in whatsoever city you enter and they receive you not go your ways out in the streets of the same
14:23and say even the very dust of your city which cleaveth on us we do wipe off against you
14:31notwithstanding be you sure of this that the kingdom of god has come nigh unto you but i say unto you
14:36that it shall be more tolerable in that day for sodom than for that city
14:41woe unto thee chorazin woe unto thee best seda for if the mighty works have been done in tyra and
14:49zidon which have been done in you they had a great while ago repentance sitting in sackcloth and ashes
14:56but it shall be more tolerable for tyra and sidon at the judgment than for you and now capernum which
15:02art exalted to heaven shall be thrust down to hell and he he that heareth you heareth me and he that
15:08despises you despises me he that despises me despises him that sent me so i wish somebody would show these
15:18verses to the the preachers that just want to goo goo gaga about israel and about the jews because it
15:28clearly says if you go out soul winning and you try to give somebody the gospel and they say i don't want
15:34to hear it i hate you they're hating jesus and then jesus goes one more step further and says not all they
15:41hate me they're hating me the one that sent me which is who god the father and we know that in first
15:47john it says you don't have the son you don't have the father i'm not going to belabor that fact we
15:51know that but i was thinking about last weekend with all the stuff going on with israel and iran
15:57i'm sure there's some preacher out there that says man it's my opportunity to say that jesus is coming
16:02anytime now israel's getting attacked jesus is coming wrong he's coming but he ain't coming anytime now
16:09um but anyway go back to first corinthians 9 that's where paul's talking about that the lord
16:17ordained that that means he he said that's the way things and it'd be and that's what they did
16:22they went from house they went into the first house that received them they stayed there and
16:27then they go out giving other people the gospel but they keep coming back to that house eating and
16:32drinking and staying there um and i'm sure rewards are going to be given to those people for that
16:38and that's what he's saying in verse 14 verse 15 but i have used none of these things
16:43paul's saying look i've not done any of these things i've got the right to do that he said i've
16:48got the right to live off the gospel i've got the right to go into people's houses because the lord
16:53ordained that he said but i've not even done that and he's trying to tell them you're judging me
17:00because and i'm not even taking part i'm not taking advantage of anybody that he's not doing that
17:05um neither have i written these things that it should be so done unto me for it were better for
17:13me to die than that any man should make my glory glory void for though i preach the gospel i have
17:21nothing to glory of for necessity is laid upon me yea woe is unto me if i preach not the gospel he's
17:29saying look i preach the gospel and he says i have nothing to glory in because i'm not jesus
17:34he said but if i don't preach it woe is unto me and if you read revelation uh you'll see the woes
17:42that are talked about the first woe the second woe the third woe these when it talks about woe in
17:49the bible it's a bad thing and he's saying woe unto him if he doesn't preach the gospel
17:55for i do this saying willingly i have a reward so he's saying if i just do this and i'm not doing
18:06it willingly i'm just doing it because i'm supposed to he said and clearly the bible tells us that he
18:13will not have a reward but if he does it willingly he wants people to be saved he realizes you know the
18:19bible talks about in another place that just came to my mind that because of hell and we know the
18:25judgment of god it makes us want to give people to gospel because we don't want to see people to go
18:30to hell um for i do this willingly i have a reward but if against my will a dispensation of the gospel
18:39is committed unto me so this word dispensation i did a whole sermon on it one time i do believe
18:45uh but the word dispensation what i think about is a pez dispenser if you remember that sermon it's
18:53just like if you remember i remember at christmas time when i was a young kid i'd get a different
18:58pez dispenser it's a little plastic thing you you would spin their head up a little piece of candy
19:02comes out it's probably stupid now i don't even know if you can find them but uh that's what it is
19:08he's like a pez dispenser of the gospel means that he's he's supposed to dispense the gospel show
19:14people to gospel well what is my reward then verily that when i preach the gospel i may make
19:20the gospel of christ without charge that abuse not abuse not my power in the gospel
19:26um for though i be free from all men yet have i made myself servant in all that i may gain the more
19:35we saw that with jesus christ he wanted he told peter let me wash your feet he said no don't wash my
19:42feet you know you're the lord but he was trying to show the disciples that you know even though you
19:48may be free and by us being saved we are free that we're supposed to be a servant unto people and
19:55that's what he's trying to tell he's trying to serve the church of corinth and showing them the
19:58right way he doesn't have to do that that's what he's trying to prove to them is look i'm an apostle
20:03i'm going to heaven just like you you know i can go on and do my own thing i'm trying to show you
20:08the right way for you to for you for your benefit that's what that's what the whole chapter is about
20:13that i may gain the more and unto the jews i became as a jew and i don't mean that he started
20:22becoming a christ-rejecting judaizer or whatever and he started circumcising people and all this
20:28stuff what it's saying is and this verse has been twisted i know uh when i went to another church
20:35had some guy tried to explain to me this that you don't just hit people with are you going to
20:40heaven and you just don't ask them that kind of stuff you got to kind of be friends to them
20:44well meanwhile while you're being friends to them the next day they may not come out of church because
20:49they're dead and in hell so i he was trying to use this verse to say that i was doing it the wrong way
20:54i didn't listen to him obviously because we're just going to go with the model that jesus and paul used
20:59which is to be bold but what he's saying is is it's not that you can be like somebody else to gain
21:08their um their respect and their whatever and he did that paul did that if you're reading the book
21:15of acts you remember when he was with the uh the tribal men or whatever and he stuck his hand
21:23and the snake bit him and came out and bit him you know he's hanging out with him doesn't mean that
21:28you lower your standards and what i'm trying to tell you is that you're not you don't say hey i'm
21:34going to the bar to give somebody gospel god does not expect us to do that everybody has a house they
21:39have a place to live he does not expect us to put ourself in temptation or to lessen ourself
21:48to defile ourselves for the gospel he does not want us to do that
21:53but if you can you know you can't go out to the poorest neighborhood
21:59wearing your armani suit that ain't gonna work but you do have to look somewhat like them because
22:07they're going to be turned off real quick when they see you like that and that's what he's trying
22:11to say to make yourself kind of like them as long as you're still under the law see the next part
22:18to them that are under the law as under the law that i may gain them that are under the law
22:22so he's saying look as long as you're staying under the law and that's that's not talking about the law
22:28of the world he's talking about the law of god that doesn't mean that you defile yourself to become
22:33like them god does not expect us to do that he expect us to be holy he expect us to be above
22:40above other people not in a haughty manner but to a manner that we are to be an example
22:50you can't go to a bar like i said and say hey i'm gonna drink a beer with you and give me the gospel
22:56first of all they're not gonna listen to you they're gonna think you're hypocritical it's just
23:00not gonna work he doesn't expect us to go to the tattoo parlor and why are you getting a tattoo of mom on
23:05you talking to him to the gospel that's not the way it is he does not want us to defile ourselves
23:10but if there's a way that you can become like that person to have an understanding of where they've been
23:18what they're doing and have them think that you are like them that can help and i don't know if i'm
23:25explaining that right but he the biggest thing is he does not want us to go out of the law to them
23:31that are without law as without law being not without law to god but into the law to christ
23:37that i might gain them that are without law so he said look even if they're not under the law and
23:44they're not obeying the law he's saying i've still got to obey the law i can't come out of there just to
23:50gain them because because i'm trying to get them he said it's not it's not worth it to the weak became i
23:59was weak that i may gain the weak so now he's saying that he acted like he was weak um you know
24:06maybe when he was in prison you know while he's in prison and he's uh tied up or chained up you know
24:12that might be where he's talking about i made all things all men that i might by all means save some
24:17so that's his main goal is to be like the jew to be like the weak is so that he could get them saved
24:25that's the main goal again not defile himself
24:29uh verse 23 and this i do why for the gospel's sake that i might be partaker thereof with you
24:39know you not they which run in a race run all but one receiveth the prize so run that ye may obtain
24:48so this is the only place in the whole king james bible that the word race is used
24:53we're all of one blood we're all of adam and eve or you want to go further into the future and go
25:01all the way back to noah in fact most people will tell you i don't suggest you do it because you don't
25:07want the government to have your dna and they have been taking the dna on the 23andme but if you did
25:12have a dna test they'll tell you the furthest they can go back is about 2500 years which is when noah
25:18was when the flood came they can't go any further back because there's no record um so it's not about
25:27race white black whatever wall of one blood but what he's saying is when you go to run a race
25:33there's only one price you know and everybody's striving their best to run that race to get that
25:41prize and he's kind of comparing that to the christianity life that we're all running a race
25:49but we're running a different race and not like we're all running against each other we're running
25:54against ourselves i guess so to speak and it's not a sprint it's a long distant run it's a marathon
26:02and then he goes to explain so run that um that you may obtain and every man that striveth for the
26:09mastery is temperate in all things now they that do it to obtain a corruptible crown we for an
26:17incorruptible crown he's saying like if you go run a race you may get a medal or trophy and one day it
26:22can be burned up you know you can rust something could happen to it it could be stolen but he's saying
26:29when we strive the race that he's talking about is not for a corruptible crown but an incorruptible
26:36crown meaning that you know the rewards in heaven it can't be corrupted it can't be destroyed
26:40i therefore so run not as uncertainty so fight i not as one that beateth the air he's saying when i'm
26:49i'm not running a race with uncertainty to what's going to happen he said i know that there's a reward
26:55waiting for me because god has promised it that remember jesus he said that there would be rewards
27:01and then he says i'm not one that beateth the air so if you think about a shadow boxer that's
27:07punching the air you know that's what he's talking about in verse 27 uh i'm fixing to read it to you
27:14in niv it's just goofy uh but i keep under my body and bring it into subjection lest by any means when i
27:22have preached to others i myself should be a castaway so what is he saying here i mean doesn't common
27:29sense say he's talking about running race shadow boxing but he's talking about keeping his body under
27:35into subjection means that he doesn't let his body uh he's trying to control his body so that he can
27:41accomplish these things that um you know whenever he preaches the gospel he's got his body in subjection
27:49controlling his body now there's a catholic doctrine i don't know if it's a doctrine but i know a bunch of
27:56monks sometime i don't know what year what time of the year it is maybe it's around easter maybe it's lent
28:02i don't know but they go there and they beat themselves you know i mean wouldn't that be a great religion
28:07to just sit there and beat the mess out of yourself and think that because you're doing this godly
28:12and it comes out and this is where the niv changes the word of god so you look down at your bible
28:19verse 27 and i'll read it to you in the non-inspired niv which says no i beat my body i beat my body
28:28now folks i don't know where god tells us to beat ourselves up and make it my slave
28:35so that after i have preached to others i myself will not be disqualified for the prize
28:41what people are crazy so the bible's telling me paul's telling the corinthians hey i'm going in there
28:50to beat my body to make it a slave and there's people that do that there's people that uh monks and
28:55people they torture themselves they they beat themselves they punch themselves i mean they they cut
29:03themselves and they do that because they think the more they do that that god's looking down on them
29:09he's probably looking down on them saying you're an idiot i mean i don't know what you're doing
29:13but this is a catholic doctrine and some other things that what they do they do this in the
29:18philippines mainly but there's nowhere in the bible about that god does not want us to hurt
29:24ourselves in fact i've told you that most of the time say people they don't they are unable to hurt
29:31themselves because of the holy spirit but this is what makes these new bible versions so silly that
29:38god would tell them to beat themselves up and to make their body a slave so that they can preach to
29:43others so they're not disqualified in the race for the prize that's why the king james bible will
29:50always be the bible and these other ones are stupid uh let's bow our head and have a prayer
