Three days before the country celebrates Emancipation Day, the government has committed to giving the Emancipation Support Committee $1.4 million.

The commitment comes following some concerns raised by the Ministry of Culture and Community Development about the Committee's handling of previous subventions.

Rynessa Cutting has more.

00:00Despite expressing concerns over the Emancipation Support Committee's handling of past allocations,
00:07Minister of Culture and Community Development Michelle Benjamin has taken the decision to
00:12subvent this year's Emancipation Celebrations. As Minister of Culture and Community Development,
00:18I wish to confirm that the Ministry has committed $1.4 million to the Emancipation Support Committee
00:25of Trinidad and Tobago for this year's Emancipation Day celebrations and the operation of the village.
00:34While there may have been differences in tone or language, I want to emphasize that our dialogue
00:41with the committee has been ongoing and open. The two parties met today after the Emancipation
00:49Support Committee lamented that year after year, the national festival is threatened by
00:55lack of funding. When this administration came into office, there was no financial provision
01:02made by the previous government for emancipation. Despite this, I made it a priority to find the
01:09necessary resources and we have done so. The ministry remains fully committed to working alongside the
01:16committee as we have from the very beginning. And I am confident in our shared commitment
01:22to honouring the legacy of emancipation with dignity and respect it deserves. We move forward
01:30together, standing united for a common cause. The minister says the government remains committed
01:38to supporting this and other national celebrations. This funding will be provided through the ministry's
01:46national days and national days and festivals vote, which supports a range of nationally recognized
01:52observances, including Spiritual Shout-a-Baptist Day, Easter, Idur-Futur, Indian Arrival Day, Independence Day,
02:01Republic Day, and Christmas. Between October 2024 and July 2025, the ministry have supported 89 organizations,
02:12with the total allocation being $3.9 million approximately. This figure does not include the
02:23ESCTT's spending allocation. Renessa Cutting, TB6 News.
