Confusion over Bermuda's travel policy has prompted an official clarification from the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs. This comes after media reports suggested that Trinidad and Tobago nationals no longer enjoy visa-free access to the island. But as Achsah Gulston reports, while transit visas may still be required, Bermuda has not revoked its visa-free status for T&T citizens.
Transcript
00:00The Ministry of Foreign and Paracum Affairs is setting the record straight,
00:05following reports that Bermuda had revoked visa-free access for Trinidad and Tobago passport holders.
00:11The Ministry has called the headline misleading,
00:15clarifying that TNT nationals do not need a visa to enter Bermuda.
00:20The misunderstanding stems from a media report,
00:22which suggested that entry to Bermuda not requires a valid U.S., U.K. or Canadian visa.
00:30But the Foreign Affairs Ministry says this is not the case,
00:34adding that the issue is more about transit than final destination.
00:39That's because there are no direct flights from Trinidad and Tobago to Bermuda,
00:44according to the media release from the Ministry.
00:47Most travelers must pass through the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom,
00:52countries which all currently require TNT nationals to hold valid visas.
00:57In a call held on July 19th between the Minister of Foreign and Paracum Affairs and Bermuda's Premier,
01:04it was confirmed that Bermuda continues to welcome TNT nationals without a visa.
01:10The release added that formal communication to Bermuda will be sent in the coming days
01:14to officially document the clarification.
01:18Officials maintain that the relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and Bermuda remains strong.
01:23The Ministry also revealed that discussions are ongoing with the U.K. Home Office
01:28to revisit the United Kingdom's recent imposition of visa requirements for Trinidad and Tobago nationals.
01:34In the meantime, citizens are reminded to verify both destination and transit country requirements
01:41when planning travel abroad.
