The strategic crime plan 2025 to 2027 is being rolled out across the country. This from Acting Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin, who spoke with TV6'S Elizabeth Williams as he met with officers in Tobago on Wednesday.
00:00So we have four major pillars. One is community partnership, organizational development and operational excellence and public safety. So we are using those four pillars to drive that team and we want the officers to be part and parcel of the process that we are at least implementing at this time.
00:21The acting commissioner of police, Junior Benjamin, spoke with the TV6 News at the Division of Community Development. He said the strategic crime plan is being rolled out with a three-tier approach, offering more boots on the ground with additional resources for Tobago.
00:39It's going to be about, again, crime prevention, crime suppression and crime intervention strategies. Therefore, as we seek to deal with gang problem, as we seek to deal with the crime problem, we want to see that we put the necessary intervention strategies so that when we leave a place, it must be left better than how we met it.
00:59So therefore, this is what you're going to be seeing coming out. You're going to see more police officers there. We have already issued at least three vehicles to Tobago because we want to see the response time increase.
01:13Top cop Benjamin said he wishes two main goals from his officers in taking Trinidad and Tobago forward as a country.
01:21Well, I have two main goals. One is that we want to see a reduction in crime. And that is paramount because I think that Trinidad and Tobago, that is one of the mandate that is expected of the police service. But more so for me, it is very important that we also seek to reduce the fear of crime. And therefore, the way in which we treat the public, we're very critical to that. So we are also stressing on the importance of customer service.
01:47Commenting on the Minister of Homeland Security speaking to the absorption of SRPs in the police service and the abuse of sick leave by some, Officer Benjamin said he would look into these matters.
02:02We have officers who will abuse the sick leave and therefore I think it's our responsibility to ensure that we look at those situations carefully. Sometimes the reason why they abuse the sick leave is what needs to be looked at.
02:17And therefore, I would be looking into that and by really encouraging my leaders to really have that one-on-one with our officers where we recognize that the sick leave has been abused because of some police indiscipline. We are going to take a zero tolerance on that.
