The distinction between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Homeland Security has been confirmed in an official State publication.
And it is now clear which one is responsible for issues regarding illegal migrants and which one is responsible for matters of intelligence and the protection of Government officials.
00:00As the new term of the Parliament opened on Friday, the responsibilities of each member of the new Cabinet were published in the Trinidad and Tobago Gazette.
00:08And the directions of the new ministers responsible for Trinidad and Tobago's security have been made quite clear.
00:16Tunapuna MP Roger Alexander, who is in charge of the newly formed Ministry of Homeland Security,
00:21has a long list of responsibilities that include intelligence, internal security, citizenship, counter-trafficking, cyber security, drug enforcement and interdiction,
00:32immigration and the security of government officials and premises.
00:36According to the Gazette, dated May 23rd, the Homeland Security Minister has line responsibility for the police service, supplemental police,
00:44estate police, special reserve police, the National Operations Centre, the fire service and the prison service.
00:50The Intelligence Gathering Strategic Services Agency, or SSA, has also been placed under the Homeland Security portfolio.
00:59The Gazette also identified the responsibilities of Toko Sanagrandi MP Wayne Sturge in his capacity as the Cabinet member in charge of the newly formed Ministry of Defence.
01:11The list of responsibilities of the Minister of Defence shall include airspace and territorial waters,
01:17counter-terrorism, global security issues, the management of illegal immigrants and deportees, as well as regional security cooperation.
01:26The Defence Minister shall also have line responsibility for the Cadet Force and the Defence Force,
01:32which consists of the Regiment, Coast Guard, Air Guard and Defence Force Reserves.
01:37The lifeguards at the nation's beaches are now under Defence Ministry,
01:41as is the Military-Led Academic Training Programme, MILAT,
01:44and the Military-Led Programs of Apprenticeship and Reorientation Training.
