00:00We remain committed to trying to get that refinery started, if not in its present form, in some kind of what we need a refinery in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:09It has been the core golden goose for Trinidad and Tobago for over 100 years.
00:13So yes, we are working on it, and I'll let you know as soon as we can.
00:16Prime Minister Kamla Passat-Busessa actually responded to a question from TV6 News about the mothballed state-owned oil refinery in Pointe-A-Pier during the media briefing after the second meeting of her cabinet at the Red House.
00:30The closure of the refinery took place when the former PNM-led government decided to replace Petrotrin with Trinidad Petroleum Holdings Limited as a state-owned oil company.
00:40When we posed our question to Prime Minister Passat-Busessa on Thursday, May 15th, she reminded the media that the administration had only been in office for a short period of time since the UNC-led coalition won the 2025 general election on April 28th.
00:56The coalition includes the oil fields workers' trade union, the OWTU.
01:01Have you set a deadline for the submission of a report to the cabinet with regard to the restarting of the refinery in Pointe-A-Pier?
01:09Not yet, not yet. We have a team working on it, and we have several proposals that have come to us, so we're still working.
01:17Maybe you could give me another 10 days and I can help you. We are working on it. I didn't mean to be facetious. We are working on it.
01:24Last week, the new energy minister, Dr. Rural Munilal, told TV6 News that he had received a report on the proposed restart of the refinery by the Nigerian-based Wando PLC
01:35that was initiated by the former PNM-led government. Minister Munilal said he would speak to this matter shortly.
01:43TV6 News reported on Wednesday that the OWTU and other trade unions are in talks with the Confederation of Regional Business Chambers
01:50regarding plans to restart the refinery in Pointe-A-Pierre.
