The Prime Minister says she will "make no apology for putting the interests of Trinidad and Tobago first" as she maintains her administration's full support for the U.S deployment of military assets in the waters near Venezuela.

These were some of the Prime Minister's comments in an interview with the Express newspaper.

00:00Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Besessa has doubled down on the declaration of her administration that Trinidad and Tobago stands in full support of U.S. efforts to dismantle drug cartels as she responded to questions in an interview with the Express newspaper about recent statements made by former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley on the matter.
00:18Prime Minister Passat-Besessa also told the Express newspaper that the government stands in full support of Guyana against any act of aggression by Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro.
00:28In response to Dr. Rowley's statement on Facebook on Monday that, quote, the government just mortgaged our sovereignty without a serious national conversation, end quote, Prime Minister Passat-Besessa told the Express, quote,
00:40The serious national conversation occurred in April 2025, and the majority of citizens voted for the UNC fully knowing my views on the Venezuelan and American governments.
00:49Many seem to be so blinded by their irrational hatred for President Trump that they don't see the benefits of the U.S. military thwarting the cartels in our region.
00:58About 10,000 citizens have been murdered in the last 25 years, end quote.
01:03Prime Minister Passat-Besessa further said Trinidad and Tobago is, quote, awash with drugs, guns and illegal immigrants.
01:09What zone of peace are these people speaking about when we have the sixth highest murder rate in the world?
01:15Our country is in a mess in terms of finances and security, end quote.
01:19And then the Prime Minister said her government will adopt a Trinidad and Tobago first policy in the next five years.
01:26Dr. Rowley said that if Trinidad and Tobago abandons CARICOM today for convenience, then tomorrow we will face the world alone, small and exposed.
01:33Prime Minister Passat-Besessa told the Express newspaper several CARICOM nations, namely St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada and Dominica, are ALBA signatories and openly backed Venezuela's president and condemned the U.S.
01:47The Prime Minister further said that CARICOM unity had already been fractured before her comments and she makes no apology for standing firm against narco-trafficking and gun smuggling.
01:58Prime Minister Passat-Besessa declared to the Express that she makes no apology for defending a CARICOM neighbour Guyana who is under threat
02:05and also makes no apology for putting the interests of Trinidad and Tobago first, that every member state of CARICOM can speak for themselves on this issue
02:14and that with American engagement now we can make ours a zone of peace.
