00:00Welcome back to the TV6 News. In anticipation of the rainy season, which will soon be upon us,
00:06the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government has launched a flood mitigation
00:11exercise targeting watercourses, distilting major waterways to prevent excessive runoff
00:17and flooding. Speaking at the launch earlier today, Minister of Rural Development and Local
00:22Government, Khadijah Amin, says her ministry is putting essential equipment into places for
00:27distilting exercises and drain and watercourses around the country. Basically, a clean-as-you-go system.
00:36In the past, what would happen is that they would do work on a ravine and they're waiting two weeks
00:43for the rubbish to move from the side of the road. So, which is why we have trucks included in our
00:49equipment. So, when we move into an area, we'll be doing everything that is required before we move
00:56to the other area. Complete work. The minister said her ministry will be working closely with other
01:03municipal corporations, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Agriculture,
01:09CPAP, Disaster Preparedness, and Management and Public Health Officers to help mitigate the flood
01:15flood situation in the country. You know what this has done? This has sparked a national drive for flood
01:25mitigation and a partnership that includes the Ministry of Agriculture to target reducing floods affecting
01:34our farmers, which drives up food prices. Our national watercourses, which the former minister failed so terribly in maintaining.
01:48And now, our current Minister of Works, Ms. Jolene John, will be on the ball with us.
01:53Present at the launch was Minister of Agriculture Ravi Rattiram, Mayor of Shogona, Spike Mohammed,
02:00and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, Peter Mitchell.
