00:00As several parts of the country were under inches of water following today's heavy rains,
00:06Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzalez officially launched the ministry's rainwater
00:11harvesting program.
00:13Imagine this heavy rain that is falling right now in Portisbien.
00:18If every single building in Portisbien has a rainwater harvesting system installed on
00:26their building, this water, as opposed to it going into our water channels and creating
00:34flooding all over Portisbien and disrupting your lives, this water can be fetched, contained,
00:42used by employees when they are going to their bathrooms, etc.
00:49And as the country prepares for the impact of two weather systems currently under formation,
00:54Governor Gonzalez notes the rainwater harvesting systems will also prove useful in times of
01:00natural disaster.
01:02If a storm or hurricane hits Trinidad and Tobago, the comfort of knowing that a community
01:08center or a school in your community, you can go there, establish a shelter, knowing
01:16that you will continue to have access to water because of rainwater harvesting systems that
01:21have been installed in some of these communities, adding resilience.
01:26The minister was speaking at a distribution ceremony for successful recipients of the
01:31ministry's social sector assistance program, which includes the re-electrification program,
01:37the electrification program, and the water tank assistance program.
01:43Over the last decade, over 129,000 people would have benefited from our social programs
01:54to the tune of $73 million.
