As T&T braces for more heavy rainfall from two weather systems, Public Utilities Minister, Marvin Gonzales, launched the Rainwater Harvesting Programme, which he says will prove crucial in times of disaster. Rynessa Cutting reports.

00:00As several parts of the country were under inches of water following today's heavy rains,
00:06Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzalez officially launched the ministry's rainwater
00:11harvesting program.
00:13Imagine this heavy rain that is falling right now in Portisbien.
00:18If every single building in Portisbien has a rainwater harvesting system installed on
00:26their building, this water, as opposed to it going into our water channels and creating
00:34flooding all over Portisbien and disrupting your lives, this water can be fetched, contained,
00:42used by employees when they are going to their bathrooms, etc.
00:49And as the country prepares for the impact of two weather systems currently under formation,
00:54Governor Gonzalez notes the rainwater harvesting systems will also prove useful in times of
01:00natural disaster.
01:02If a storm or hurricane hits Trinidad and Tobago, the comfort of knowing that a community
01:08center or a school in your community, you can go there, establish a shelter, knowing
01:16that you will continue to have access to water because of rainwater harvesting systems that
01:21have been installed in some of these communities, adding resilience.
01:26The minister was speaking at a distribution ceremony for successful recipients of the
01:31ministry's social sector assistance program, which includes the re-electrification program,
01:37the electrification program, and the water tank assistance program.
01:43Over the last decade, over 129,000 people would have benefited from our social programs
01:54to the tune of $73 million.
