00:00Hey, it's Sarah, and I was so lucky to be in the building for the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert
00:04that happened at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Here's a few of my takeaways from the show.
00:09Taylor Hawkins put out a funky solo EP in 2016, and Range Rover Bitch had a brief lifespan as a
00:15radio single, as heard on MMR. In a night full of star power and classic hits, here was a nod to
00:20Taylor's quirky solo project fronted by Justin Hawkins. No relation there, he's the singer of
00:25the darkness. There was something mystical about seeing the trio of Joe Walsh, Jimmy Foxx, and Dale
00:30Peters bring it back to basics on stage. Walsh in particular was on fire. They came together
00:36specifically for these two tribute shows, which Taylor Hawkins, a James Gang worshiper, would have
00:41loved. Who better to play Van Halen than a Van Halen? Wolfgang got the entire Forum on their feet
00:52for a raucous set of Panama and every drummer's favorite, Hot for Teacher. Wolf later posted that
00:57the night was a celebration of not only Taylor, but also of his father, Eddie Van Halen. Pat Smear could
01:02barely contain his joy as he set up this jam session. Members of Def Leppard joined the Foo Fighters and
01:08Pat Wilson of Weezer behind the kit for Rock of Ages, and that hook of long-lived rock and roll hit a
01:14little different that night. Miley Cyrus stepped out for photograph while oozing Debbie Harry vibes.
01:19Taylor Hawkins loved big, bombastic hits, so it was fitting that his Laguna Beach brothers and Motley
01:24crew joined in on this night. Derek Day of Classless Act stormed the stage and left our jaws agape. He
01:30absolutely nailed Live Wire and Home Sweet Home like he was Vince Neil in his prime. And it was amazing.
01:36Pink's powerhouse voice was a perfect match over Nancy Wilson's iconic Barracuda riff.
01:41Pink also joined Queen later in the night to sing Somebody to Love and absolutely ripped
01:53through the Pretender with the Foo Fighters.
01:55Black Hole Sun was one of my favorite songs as a kid, and I never thought I'd see the surviving members of Nirvana
02:07cover that song with the guys from Soundgarden. Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless on vocals
02:12was the perfect choice.
02:23You can get the full set list from the Taylor Hawkins tribute show on WMMR.com, and keep an eye out for the
02:29inevitable 16-part special that Dave Grohl is going to put together on this thing.
02:33Because you know he's going to do it, right?
