00:00all right 105 on the brown detroit still back to your pop and r&b it's your boy showtime the
00:04czar
00:04got a special guest in studio with me today i've become a comedian super funny super talented super
00:10dope tori j what up though what's good what's good what up thank you for coming to the show
00:16first of all how are you i'm good how are you black blessed and fly man thank you for asking
00:21um so before we get into why you're here you got the shows coming up man for people who
00:26don't really know you 100 give me a little backstory about tori j how did you get into
00:30the comedy world uh what made you want to start doing comedy all that good stuff you know i've
00:34been wanting to do comedy since i was a kid like i'm a student of the game um all of
00:40the grades from
00:41eddie murphy jamie foxx uh the storytelling that's that's more my style uh i wanted to do it but i
00:47was a stage fright so i had that real bad so i never really got into it because i was
00:52like
00:52i was the quiet kid i ain't talk for real and um couple years back i was like you know
00:58what
00:58i'm gonna do it somebody pushed me was like man you funny don't nobody know you funny because you
01:02don't talk and i was like i don't know we could we could try it right and um did it
01:07and ever since
01:08then i just been doing it now for like four years um and now i'm like creating my own shows
01:14and
01:14and trying to push it with that but i you know it's funny because i i remember i told somebody
01:19like
01:19i'm doing comedy come to my comedy show and the first thing everybody says nigga you don't talk
01:25right and it's like true but you know i talk on stage you know type right right right uh it's
01:32just
01:32it's been like a fun journey for me because that is my expressiveness like i'm quiet and i get on
01:36stage and it's a different it's a different uh like everything like a whole persona you get
01:42something different and then as soon as the lights and cameras everything's off i'm go time i'm
01:46quiet again how'd you get over the stage fright was it just going up there and doing it or did
01:51you practice at the crib what was that you know actually uh no so what happened was um
01:57bill bouchard comedy castle gotcha uh that he has a class um and what happened was i had injured
02:04myself i couldn't do anything so they was like just go to the class and i was like all right
02:07cool
02:07and uh it was crazy because you go and i'm thinking that they just gonna teach you how to do
02:13stand up
02:13right right and then the first day i was like get on stage and i was like get on stage
02:17oh just threw you to the sharks like that man just they just throw you in there just throw you
02:21in
02:21there and uh so i'm like i'm like oh okay and like for the whole it's like a four-week
02:26process the
02:26whole four weeks like he kept yelling at me pick your head up you gotta talk to us and stop
02:31doing it
02:31stop doing that and then after the first show um it's it's that rush that laughter that like oh man
02:38i really can't do this you know type of thing and uh to this day when he see me now
02:42he'd be like i
02:42can't believe you're the same person that from day one right so when the in the class talk to me
02:48about
02:48that because is it just are they just critiquing like little things like how you stand there how
02:53you said a joke how or is it like they give you a joke and then you got to go
02:57act it out or
02:58so the way that he does it okay because comedy is is your perspective gotcha you know what i mean
03:04uh
03:04at your you might not be for everybody i might not be for everybody right but what he does is
03:10literally he puts you on a stage the very first day he asks you who you are asks you what
03:14you do
03:14asks you a question about childhood and then he say that's the joke really and you're like i mean that
03:24is a little funny you know what you're like what you know so he pulls that out of you to
03:30start
03:30thinking like my everyday life is funny who knew you know and so it's like you know you get which
03:40it's different everybody kind of not everybody get personal with their comedy right you know a lot of
03:45stuff is you know i made this up and i did this and i can give you a thousand one
03:49-liners from
03:49something i just made up off the top of my head right but the more you really get into comedy
03:55you
03:55start to realize that really working the audience is really like being relatable and it's not even
04:01that you came from my background but you're like oh i want to know how do i know and if
04:06they're not
04:07feeling that emotion from you too then it's kind of like so when you first got that like you said
04:13that first laugh from the class we was like okay i got it or was it when you actually got
04:17on the stage
04:17and you was like yeah it was the stage because it was um because comedy castle because it's actual
04:23an actual comedy club people come to laugh which is a little different than when you go to like
04:29bars or things like that no when you go to comedy clubs people come to laugh they don't know you're
04:34not funny until you're not funny got you you know what i mean so when you get a laugh from
04:40people who
04:41you know i know you don't have my background every time i roll you out yeah right so i'm the
04:47only
04:47black person in there you know so it's like i'm like oh man you know and then you getting these
04:54laughing you're like they think that's funny you know type of thing and it's like huh okay i think
05:00i might you know to to get it in the moment it's a rush and then afterwards like i think
05:06i think i
05:06might be able to do this i think if you you know i put it in the work and you
05:10know you you figure out
05:11your writing style and you figure out how to write it and how to make it stronger and stuff like
05:16that
05:16it it kind of it kind of it's kind of beneficial okay so talk about the writing style right like
05:21do you write your jokes or do you freestyle them first what is that process for a comedian because
05:26a lot of people just think people get up there and freestyle ah some people do oh that is a
05:31thing
05:32some people do just get up there and freestyle so now that don't work the thing about the
05:37freestyling thing is at some point or another you run out of freestyle oh that makes sense you know
05:46what i mean so you don't have nothing to fall back on and so that's how you get some people
05:51that you know start to like antagonize in the crowd because oh i'm i know this funny you know
05:55you ain't laughing i'm funny you know that type of thing and it's like you don't got no material bro
06:00you like you know tapped out you're naturally silly but that only works for so long before it's
06:06like okay you're not talking about nothing because some people they will they come to see a show you
06:11have to entertain these people right so they only really go but so far right right so it's like
06:16every and everybody writing style is different um what works for me i know for a fact don't work for
06:21other people you know what i mean so i i when i go to open mics open mics is straight
06:29premises it's
06:30it that is freestyling for me but it's nine times out of ten i thought about something
06:34and i just gotta say it out loud to hear it so that i can add substance got you it
06:42is a lot
06:42more to comedy than i thought it was it's a lot that's but i respect the craft like people
06:47think just because you made your cousin laugh like i can go get up on the stage i'm like nah
06:51no that's only your cousin understood that joke brother yeah exactly yeah yeah exactly so
06:57because the thing about what comedy is like you want to be that person that regardless of what
07:02you're talking about even if it's offensive that's funny i'm glad you brought up offensive
07:07does that make you not want to say a joke sometimes when you get up on stage because how sensitive
07:12the
07:13world is right now and everything is like ah you can't say this about that person can't say this
07:17you look like hell no i'm saying what i want to say
07:21you know what i'm i'm i'm really like i'm really like that person where it's like i do stay away
07:26from
07:27certain topics a little bit um but i stay away from certain topics a little bit in in regular
07:32everyday life i don't care about you got you got you know what i mean but to the my my
07:38i'm a
07:38storyteller so for the most part i'm pulling or drawing from either experiences or just the way i
07:46saw that event take place so at the end of the day i really i'm not going to say that
07:51i don't care
07:51if it offended you but it's my perspective you know what i mean now it's my job as a comedian
07:59because it is a job to be honest it's my job as a comedian to try not to make it
08:05where it's like
08:06i'm beating down on you as the listener when i present it to you i have to i have to
08:12find the
08:13funny in whatever it is to be able to present it to you for you to laugh at it so
08:17people like
08:19funerals is not really funny funerals are hilarious i know i i'm just some people
08:25some people say funeral is not funny but you're able to find the funny at a funeral
08:30and then you're able to present it to them but what if somebody's like yeah that was a
08:34offensive joke about a funeral bro my cousin died my uncle died like that you see what i'm saying
08:39do you feel a ways about that no not really because give it time okay give it time they'll come
08:45around
08:45eventually okay eventually they'll find the funny in in their situation to say like all right i was
08:52funny because sometimes it's just like i i'm i will laugh at a funeral literally and and it's just
08:58because like i find things funny and it's like i'm it's hard for me to like kind of hold that
09:03back a
09:03little bit or what have you but it's life is too serious yeah that's a fact you know what i
09:09mean so
09:09it's for me naturally like i naturally find funny in everything which is a problem in regular life
09:16but i find funny in everything because we all gonna die one day you gotta enjoy it today right
09:23you know what i mean and you know i could be here right now my light set the house is
09:27off you know
09:28what i mean but you're not gonna know it because i'm gonna laugh about it i'm gonna talk about it
09:31because you can't control everything the things you can't control you control cool but you can't
09:37control everything so i'm gonna let it like just put me in a grave no so people get offended by
09:43things it's like revisit this revisit this like two years when like you went through your grieving
09:49period because then you can look back and be like man my uncle did do such and such such and
09:54such oh man
09:55they did you know it's gonna make you laugh later it's gonna make you laugh later right now you're
09:59sensitive because it's it's right now you know what i mean so you you hey i'm sorry you're going
10:05through that but come back later you'll be all right give me some of your uh comedy influences
10:11you talked about it earlier you watched a bunch of great tours some of the greats that you studied
10:14and you know you like saying you said you were a storyteller so who's some dope storytellers eddie
10:19murphy i thought you was gonna say eddie murphy is my number one eddie murphy is my number one and
10:24and it's funny nowadays like people don't even know that's where he started in comedy you know and
10:29but eddie murphy is like number one to me uh red fox um of course you got richard priors you
10:37got the
10:37i love sinbad that's one i don't hear a lot that's a storyteller you know what i mean it's how
10:44you set
10:45it up how you put it it didn't matter what sinbad was talking about it was funny and it was
10:49like
10:50because of how he presented his story jamie fox jamie fox is good yeah very storyteller like and and what
10:57i
10:57love about them is it's not just you know the stories that they were telling or or it was the
11:03writing behind it it was the theatrics behind it it was i believed you i was there with you even
11:08though
11:08i wasn't there with you you know it was the ability for them to like create certain characters
11:15and like really like bring you in that you know what i mean you know what i'm saying so it
11:20was like
11:21you could he could be talking about one thing and he just lillian and you just sitting there like
11:25oh my god lillian listen why you're not listening to daddy you know what i mean it's just like
11:28and it's like but it was the way that they told the stories you know um so it's it's it's
11:35a few
11:36but i love a good storyteller i love it when you present it um but that's like that's like probably
11:42like my my definitely my top five like red fox he wasn't necessarily a storyteller but he was raw
11:48yeah yeah red fox yeah he was raw he ain't he ain't give a damn what he said you know
11:54it was
11:54richard pyre was raw too i think he but he was at a time where he had to be because
11:57it was like
11:58the times yeah it was it was yeah he was daring to to be that raw at a you know
12:04and that's but
12:05that's what really kind of made him in my opinion is the fact that like you know i'm not supposed
12:11to
12:11say this because it's the it's not politically yeah black politics one phrase i don't like when
12:18it comes to comedians is ex-comedian is not funny now personally i think you know comedian or comedy
12:25is subjective but i don't it's you can say such and such is not funny to me but to say
12:32it as if they
12:33are it's a fact i think that's that's corny because you might not laugh at it but somebody else
12:38you know thinks it's funny how you feel about that do you think when people are critiquing
12:42comedians is it cool to say such and such ain't funny to me to like you said to me because
12:48like
12:49like you said subjective it may not be my style of comedy right oh you cuss every other sentence
12:55that might be for somebody it's a room for everybody got you and that's what people fail to realize
13:02you can go uh new way have open mics on on mondays and when you go to new way it
13:09is a different
13:11you get a different type of comedian in there every five minutes
13:17and you're going to hear somebody say that's not he's not funny he's not this but he could take that
13:21same joke and go to this one particular room and just straight destroy it and it's like he wasn't for
13:28you got you yeah you know what i mean like you could be a bill bird friend but then hate
13:34jamie foxx
13:36or you could be you know it's different it's different styles so it's like i could say all
13:41day like i don't think he's funny to me but at the end of the day that man on 85
13:46televisions
13:47somebody think he's funny somebody think he's funny you know what i'm saying he piqued somebody's
13:51interest right so it's like you know critiquing i don't critique me personally if i can't help you i
13:57i ain't got nothing to say you know what i mean if i can't make you better it's nothing for
14:01me to say
14:03that's just me you know what i mean you in a fairly male dominated industry man what is it like
14:10being
14:10a female in comedy um now there are a lot more female comedians nowadays um can you speak to a
14:16little bit about that do you like obviously you like seeing that because you did a show not too long
14:20ago where you had kyla shay on there and she's super funny to me so uh talk about being a
14:25female in
14:25this comedy space you know what it doesn't bother me personally now i hear stories all the time
14:33about what some of the female artists go through uh dealing with a lot of people or i hear that
14:38you
14:39know oh well you know so and so don't mess with you because they don't they won't have a chance
14:43with
14:43you because yes i am female but i am a part of the letters so it's a different perspective oh
14:49i don't
14:50they don't talk to you they don't rock with you because they they not gonna have a chance with you
14:53i hear that a lot too and it's just like okay i'm so like i mind my business i don't
14:58care me
14:59personally you know what i mean so it doesn't it doesn't bother me but i do see a lot of
15:04the things
15:05that like some of the women the straight women go through dealing with male comics or just certain
15:10venues or different things like that um so i'm not going to say i'm completely excused from it because
15:15i'm not you know things are you know certain situations happens and they don't um but overall
15:23what i will say is it's a lot of gatekeepers and unfortunately a lot of them are the males
15:28because it is a male dominant you know thing or what have you so you have to deal with this
15:33or deal
15:33with that or the buddy systems that goes on but um i i personally i don't deal with it much
15:40i'm not big
15:41going like if it if that ain't my door yeah you know gotta go open something else so i you
15:47know
15:47i don't i don't stress it i don't make a big thing about it um whereas like i probably could
15:52you know
15:53what i'm saying but it's pointless my thing is at the end of the day funny or not people gonna
15:58see it
15:58people gonna people gonna recognize it and it'll go from there i'm not i'm not waiting for one person
16:05or another to open the door for me so that and that's just me so it's like you don't have
16:12to like
16:12me yeah i don't care right right you know but i try to keep it a balance like when i
16:17put on my shows
16:17i try to keep it a balance where it's you know male female male female just because you go your
16:25audience give them something different to see uh experience everybody talking about something
16:30different and for the most part so it's like i think it's stupid yeah to be honest like oh you
16:36know well you know we doing this and it's like come on everybody funny right what did um what your
16:42mom or your dad or you know your grandparents whoever you know took care of you when you was
16:48younger what did they say when you told them i'm gonna be a comedian my mom said i'm not funny
16:51um wow that's crazy that was like i told my mom i was like hey well i'm gonna do comedy
17:00she was
17:00like but you're not funny and i'm like but i bet you laugh every day boy black mamas they take
17:03the
17:04truth don't they that's crazy i was like what now you know i'm not funny yeah like bye dang you
17:09killed
17:09my drink but what did she when she saw you get on stage what did she say after that you
17:12know what
17:12i love it now because thank god she's around to see it you know what i mean but uh now
17:18she's like oh
17:18man you funny like she pushed me that's fire she pushes me to be like talk about your family talk
17:23about your family you need to do this more when you do this i'm like oh now you my manager
17:27i wasn't
17:28funny a second ago you know what i mean so like just to see that or like like i said
17:34i was a quiet
17:35person so like even making jokes i stayed out the way so like all of that like i'll giggle to
17:40myself
17:40in the corner somewhere but nobody really knew like you know you kind of funny low-key like
17:47honestly if we weren't in a relationship and i got comfortable around it you really didn't know
17:52so it took for one of my exes to be like you really should try it like go ahead and
17:58push that
17:59nice and i was like all right let's see what happens that type of thing but it's cool to how
18:05they support
18:05now fire that's dope now let's talk about your shows you got two shows coming up um one is the
18:1121st and
18:12one is the 28th right yes okay so i think it's the uh tory j and friends that's the 28th
18:18tory j and family oh tory j i'm sorry tory j and family has got uh my guy mike larry

19:15up to go back

19:53uh and
19:55big chuck big there you go big chuck won the tory j madness open mic uh oh fire yeah so
20:03he gets to open
20:04this show nice nice so what can people expect from the tory j and family yes tory j and family
20:11so i'm
20:12about family and everybody i feel like because like i said i'm not in competition with nobody
20:16so i feel like everybody that work with i consider you family we here now we gonna put on a
20:22great show
20:22we're gonna make these people laugh um and and we got two we got two vets in the game we
20:28got 20 plus
20:28years with mike larry and shawnee d um mike larry i think he just hit three million on his um
20:34his special
20:36on tubi nice yeah he been telling me about that special shout out to him for that shawnee d been
20:42in the
20:42game for 30 plus years going back to comic view and she's been traveling the country she's been
20:47all over the place so that's always doing it now with her daughter i believe so yeah yeah yeah so
20:53just just i mean for me personally just to be like i said i'm a student of the game so
20:57just to be able
20:58to share the stage with people that's been doing this 20 30 years i'm only for you i'm a baby
21:02i'm i'm
21:03a nobody in a sense what what did was there any advice that either one of them gave you
21:08um in terms of like comedy or just pursuing it you know what just in just in passing over the
21:14years
21:14um just keep going uh mike mike larry has like really spoke some great things every time i see
21:21mike hey man hey man you gonna get that netflix special before i get it hey man uh uh we
21:28need to
21:29get you out of detroit man hey man you know so it's it's it's always love uh encountering both of
21:35them anytime they're in a room and it's it's even better when when like being a newcomer you get
21:39that feedback and they're like nah you you're on the right track i keep doing what you're doing because
21:44it's that's great because i don't do comedy in the city often like most i travel mostly for my comedy
21:49so to be able to like i'm like i gotta i gotta bring my fan base here like i need
21:54a fan base here
21:55you know when i shoot my special i want my city to show up for me so like to have
21:59them just be like
22:00just supportive keep going do better with this and when you do that don't shy away from that just
22:05the advice and it's i love it dope dope all right tell them when the show both the shows are
