A boom in the Agricultural Sector and lower food prices can be expected soon.
This as the Minister of Youth and National Service, Foster Cummings tells of initiatives undertaken by his Ministry to expand employment for the young people...
00:00We have trained 1,400 new farmers, we have the homestead program, we have the shade house program, we have the aquaculture program, and now we have now introduced a community fresh vegetable program.
00:12The minister expects that the number of farmers from the program will increase to 1,500 by the end of this year. He tells us there will be added benefits for both consumers and the economy.
00:26There definitely will be. As soon as these young persons move on to their lands, and we're preparing lands at this point in time, we've given out the first batch in Chatham, and they start production. We expect cheaper food prices, we expect reduction in importation of some of these fresh vegetables that we import, and even in terms of agro-processing, those persons involved in agro-processing will have a reliable supply of raw products.
00:54The minister says the young people are really gravitating to the programs, and several training centers have been set up in various communities, Laventil, Malik, California in Central Trinidad, Malabar, and Enterprise, just to name a few.
01:11We take training into your community, so there's no excuse, really, as to the young person wanting to be trained and not having access to that training, because of course, you know, we have this unfortunate border issue, where persons can't go from one community into another community, and therefore we take that into account, and we put the resources within the community so you can be trained there.
01:35He says his aim is to assist the youth in becoming the best version of themselves, instead of being recruited by the criminal elements.
