00:00Mali is slang for an illegal street drug. It is often thought to be a pure
00:05form of the illegal drugs ecstasy or MDMA. Reports of it entering the TNT
00:11market date back to 2016. Though hearing about it before, National Security
00:17Minister Fitzgerald Hines got a troubling call which prompted him into
00:21action. I received a very painful call this morning from a constituent of mine
00:30who told me that this synthetic drug that they call Mali is easily
00:40accessible to the children in the neighborhood. I'd heard that before but
00:48this morning was a painful call because the caller reported that he had been
00:54talking to a youngster who is known to be using this thing and the things that
01:00were coming from the youngster really troubled him. The synthetic drug now
01:05comes in vibrant colors and designs. It alters mood and perception but also
01:11exposes users to health risks. So I took a little time and I called a number of
01:17other young people from the community and every one of the four of them
01:22confirmed what I said and they don't live in the same street.
01:31So for the sake of money,
01:36this thing is being sold and in some cases given. Hines said he contacted
01:42the National Drug Council. So it's a matter that is now
01:46going to be shared with the National Police and of course the Ministry of
01:52Health because there are public health considerations in this. But from what I
01:57heard this morning, it makes our young daughters very, very
02:09less restrictive on the way they conduct themselves as young women.
02:15Party and frolic and they're not as protective of themselves.
02:22Minister Hines vowed to do something about it.
02:25The caller told me, young man told him the most sad and depressing feeling he
02:33gets is when he is coming off of this drug.
02:38So it's so depressing and so sad he feels that he has to try it again.
02:45To me as a layman, that sounds like quintessentially addiction.
02:50He called for parents, grandparents and guardians to be more vigilant and do
02:55what they can to combat this illegal drug.
