00:07reduction in trade dependence on the U.S. for greater long-term economic resilience.

00:12Jayant Menon, a senior fellow at the IC's Yusof Isha Institute, said the current uncertainty in

00:18U.S. trade policy makes it critical for ASEAN countries to diversify their trade patterns.

00:24He said ASEAN nations should negotiate collectively to reduce or eliminate recent

00:29tariff hikes while also working to decrease their dependence on the U.S. market.

00:33University Malaya economist Go Limtai supported this view, saying ASEAN must

00:38diplomatically engage the U.S. but also act decisively in shifting trade strategies.

00:44Jayant and Go pointed to the ASEAN Economic Community, a regional integration initiative

00:49launched in 2015 to create a single market and production base, as a valuable but underutilized

00:54platform to reduce reliance on U.S. trade despite its slow progress due to member states' protectionism.

01:01However, Jayant said the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, a 15-nation trade pact that

01:07includes China, Japan, and South Korea, may be more relevant than the AEC as it connects ASEAN

01:13countries to a wider network of complementary economies beyond the region.
