00:00Former Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin passed away this morning at the age of 86.
00:08Daim's lawyer, Gurdiel Singh Nijjar, confirmed his death when contacted.
00:14Daim served as Finance Minister twice, the first stint from 1984 to 1991 under former Prime
00:20Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's administration, during which he played a key role in managing
00:26Malaysia's economy and implementing structural adjustments. He later returned for a second
00:32term briefly from 1999 to 2001, again under Mahathir, to address economic issues following
00:38the Asian financial crisis. Earlier this year, Daim and his wife, Naeem Makhalid,
00:45claimed trial in court on charges of failing to comply with the terms of a notice from the
00:49Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission regarding asset declaration. Daim was accused of failing
00:55to declare his ownership in 38 companies, 19 plots of land, as well as six properties. He was
01:01also alleged to have failed to declare his ownership of Amarnasaham Nasional Berhad
01:06and Amarnasaham Nasional Accounts, as well as seven luxury vehicles.
