00:00With voter registration now closed for the 2025 general election, the Elections and Boundaries Commission is reporting an increase in voter registration.
00:11A total of 1,154,708 people are registered to vote this year, an increase of 20,573 eligible voters from the 2015 election.
00:26However, with a large number of people choosing to abstain from exercising their franchise each election year,
00:33Prime Minister Stuart Young is urging everyone to enter the polls on April 28.
00:39I start off by asking every citizen who cares about Trinidad and Tobago to go out and vote on the 28th of April.
00:51Don't stay home. Don't take anything for granted and say, well, I'm not voting.
00:56Because you see, in the past, some have made that mistake.
01:01And you led Trinidad and Tobago to the brink, to the brink where we were almost destroyed.
01:09In 2020, voter turnout was a meagre 58%.
01:14The PNM secured the popular vote, inching out the UNC by just over 13,000 votes.
01:21This time around, the newly installed Prime Minister is hopeful that his initiatives, which include a new council, will be enough to turn the undecided red.
01:32We have a carnival. We have a steel band. We have our parties. We have that whole entertainment industry.
01:42We have artists that are unlike any in the world. I intend to harness that, to work with them, to form a council.
01:51And I'm going to establish the Art and Cultural Innovation Council to work with us, to bring their innovative ideas, because they're exporting it.
02:00Minister of National Security Marvin Gonzalez shared the following message to all eligible voters.
02:07Do not just give us 21 seats. Do not just give us 22 seats.
02:12We need a constitutional majority to go to the Parliament and make the necessary changes.
02:21Change of the Service Commission. Change of the management of the Police Service. Change of the management of the Defence Force.
02:29Change of the management of all of the structures, the judiciary.
02:33Because these are the changes that we need to make to return Trinidad and Tobago to a place of safety.
