Transcript
00:00It's pandemonium at the UNC headquarters in Chaguanas as the party screens for five seats
00:08Tunapuna, Cuva North, Cuva South, Mayaro and Karimi Central.
00:13The MP for Cuva South, Rudian Darsing, has offered himself up again.
00:17My work speaks for itself.
00:19It has always been on the side of the people, what the United National Congress stands for
00:26in terms of people-centred development and improving the quality of life and standard of living
00:33under the leadership of Kamala Hussain.
00:37Newcomer to electoral politics, Nicholas Morris is hoping to get the nod from Mayaro,
00:42a head of the current MP, Rashton Parry.
00:46How does Morris fare compared with unexperienced politicians?
00:50I am coming into politics, I am coming here to screen as 15 years under UNC Executive.
00:56I have served as a Commonwealth Youth Parliamentarian, a Commonwealth Youth Ambassador
01:00and I have served as a Parliamentary Researcher at the Energy and Parliamentary Procedure for over nine years.
01:04So compare me to Rashton Parry 2015 and Morris of 2025,
01:08I think I have more experience compared to Rashton 2015.
01:12But this is not about Rashton Parry today, this is about Mayaro, this is about Trianta Begu.
01:18And the past five years, the past ten years, we have seen our country under attack from the PNM.
01:22A constituent of Kuva North, which is currently held by Ravi Rathiram,
01:27Attorney-at-Law Kyle Tak-Lalsing hopes to bring the seat home for the UNC in the upcoming 2025 general election.
01:35I have no criticism of any brother or sister in the United National Congress.
01:40We are one party going forward.
01:42What would give you a cut above the rest?
01:45I think for my personal self, I have a lot of experience in legislation and constitutional law
01:51and I can make my best contribution in Parliament.
01:53My entire career has been about service, serving people, serving the downtrodden, fighting for rights
01:59and I want to do that in the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago.
02:02For each of the five seats being screened, there are more than one person being screened.
02:07The opposition leader says democracy is alive and well in the Yellow Party.
02:12It indicates that people are very interested in representation.
02:15They are brave enough to put themselves forward, I think it's a good sign.
02:20It is about the democracy that people are willing and able to come forward to represent constituents,
02:27to represent the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
02:29I think it's a very, very good sign.
02:30There are so many people, the interest is tremendous.
02:33Confident of a general election win, Pisar Besasa says aside from MP positions,
02:39there will be many other governance roles to be filled,
02:42even if one is not selected to represent the UNC at the polls.
02:46She disputes a suggestion that she has gone right-winged.
02:50I want to disagree with you, I have not gone right, I am dead centre.
02:56And that is what the country needs, I think the world needs for all of us to be dead centre
03:00so we can look after the interests on the left and on the right
03:03and bring everybody together, united for better development and sustainability.
03:07As it relates to women's reproductive rights and controversial issues,
03:11under her government, a referendum, she says, will pave the way for any legislative decisions.
03:17On those very, very controversial issues, women's rights, on gay issues and so on,
03:22I think those are matters for the population.
03:25Some kind of a referendum consultation that the population must tell us where to go.
03:31We should not impose our own views and our own thoughts and our own policies onto the population.
03:37It must be, it must be coming from the people of Jordan Island.
03:41Between Friday and Monday, more progress has been made as it relates to the Coalition of Interests,
03:47with the Wednesday fielding of two candidates from the OWTU who will contest under the flag of the rising sun.
03:54UNC polls suggest, alongside crime, citizens are concerned about another burning issue.
04:00Well, from our polling, whilst crime scored like number one in almost every sector where we did the polling,
04:07independent polling, health is running close for a second.
04:11So the two major issues from polling is crime and you will not need health care.
04:17Because if you're dead, you can't enjoy anything else.
04:19And the health sector is so bad.
04:21So that is very, very high of what they do, their polling.
