00:00What a difference a day makes.
00:05After the heat and sun of the past few weeks,
00:08Lake Burley Griffin was today grey, choppy and quiet
00:11as some Canberrans opted for indoor activities.
00:14We were planning on going for a walk around the lake,
00:16but I don't think we will.
00:19Others were relieved by the dip in the mercury.
00:22It's actually pretty comfortable.
00:23It's a lot better for walking around.
00:25And it wasn't just people benefiting.
00:27It's given us an opportunity to get back out in the gardens
00:30and have a look around, make sure we get the water up to our plants
00:35and to check in to do some of the jobs that we can't do when it's really hot.
00:40According to the Bureau of Meteorology,
00:42the temperature peaked at 20 degrees this afternoon,
00:45compared with the low to mid-30s experienced throughout December and January thus far.
00:50Temperatures are forecast to remain below 30 until next week,
00:54with a chance of some thunderstorms.
00:56We're in the high-risk weather season here in the ACT,
00:59so if we're not in that fire season, we've got the risk for storms and flooding.
01:04With crews having been called to multiple grass fires in recent weeks,
01:08the Rural Fire Service is warning against complacency during the cool snap.
01:12Fires can start at any time of the year.
01:15They can move quickly.
01:16They develop quickly.
01:18And just because we've got a cool day and a little bit of moisture around
01:21doesn't mean that we won't get fires.
01:23We've still got three months of the fire season to go.
01:25A possible La Nina would be good news for crews,
01:28but one expert is warning it's too early to call it and it may be weak.
01:33The outlook for the next couple of months in this part of the world
01:36is that we've got slightly above average chance of having good rainfall,
01:42but it's only very slight.
01:44A warning the reprieve is just that.
