00:00It's a really hot day, a very hot day in the capital today.
00:07Canberra was heading for a top of 42 degrees.
00:10That is the capital's hottest day in six years.
00:14It nears the all-time record for Canberra as well,
00:17which was 44 degrees recorded back in January 2020.
00:21It makes Canberra the hottest capital city in Australia today.
00:26Many people got out and about early in Canberra
00:29to get their exercise done before the heat of the day.
00:32Around swimming spots in Canberra,
00:34there were a few people out and about trying to keep cool.
00:37Most people, though, did heed those warnings
00:40and tried to stay cool inside.
00:43Authorities certainly were concerned about some of the issues
00:46that come with heat waves like heat-related illness.
00:49ACT Ambulance Service said that they were going to have,
00:52you know, preparing for a surge in workload over today
00:56and over the coming days as well.
00:59The good news when it comes to this heat wave in Canberra
01:02is that we haven't seen elevated fire danger.
01:05While the fire danger is high,
01:07it hasn't reached those levels where a total fire ban has needed to be declared.
01:12But fire crews certainly are on standby to respond to any breakouts that do occur.
01:17But the heat wave is certainly not over yet.
01:21This was supposed to be the peak today.
01:24Over the coming days, we will still see some really high temperatures into the high 30s.
01:30We're not expecting some cool conditions to return to the capital until late on Sunday
01:36when there is a forecast for some welcome rain, which a lot of Canberrans are hoping for.
