Australia's biggest car festival, Summernats, has roared to life in Canberra. It's not just hot rods on the roads this year. Revheads are facing scorching temperatures amid heatwave conditions.

00:00Rumbling into the nation's capital.
00:07Cars of all shapes, sizes and styles have roared their way down Canberra's main thoroughfare,
00:15officially marking the start of the 38th edition of Summonats.
00:20Summonats is all the same things that we do every year that we know and love.
00:24It's burnouts, cruising, elite show cars, drifting, skid row,
00:28thousands of people having a great time.
00:31130,000 people are expected to attend the festival, most coming from outside Canberra.
00:37I just love it, it's awesome.
00:39I've got plenty of cars myself, so I'll bring up one next year.
00:42There's always some really nice show pieces.

00:47And bringing the young fella around, he wants to get a VL now.
00:50Not a huge car enthusiast, but it's always nice to see him coming past and hear the noises and stuff.
00:56Police say they'll be keeping an eye on attendees after already seizing four cars.
01:01The plan is to come down here and engage in street racing, burnouts, drug or drink driving.
01:07Make sure you pick up a train timetable on the way down because you won't be driving home.
01:11While this is the festival's grand opening moment, there's still four days of events to come.
01:16And with Canberra currently experiencing a severe heat wave, organisers say they're doing everything they can to keep attendees cool.
