Over 100 people ave been arrested, close to 700 rounds of ammunition and close to 20 firearms have been recovered by police since the SOE was declared on Monday.

These figures were given by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service in a public statement today.

Giving her remarks, the Commissioner of Police says these arrests and seizures merely represent the begining of what's to come under the current state of emergency.

00:00The fight is just getting started. These were the words used by Commissioner of
00:05Police Ula Hairwood Christopher in a statement today, as she revealed that
00:10since the state of emergency was declared, 126 suspects have been
00:15arrested and 17 firearms seized. Additionally, over 675 rounds of
00:22assorted ammunition have been recovered by officers during 257 anti-crime
00:28operations across the 10 police divisions since the SOE was declared
00:33five days ago. During intelligence-led exercises, the Commissioner says 275
00:39priority offenders were targeted by officers and there have been over 1,000
00:44searches since Monday. Commissioner Hairwood Christopher says,
00:48the powers granted to officers under the SOE regulations are allowing us to push
00:53back against the proliferation of gang and gun violence in our country. We have
00:59maintained that our actions are to ensure the safety and security of all
01:03the law-abiding citizens of Trinidad and Tobago." In a statement from the
01:09TTPS, DCP Intelligence and Investigation Suzette Martin says, the police service
01:15is committed to operating within the boundaries of the law and while they
01:19have been granted enhanced powers under the SOE, these powers, she says, will not
01:24be abused. DCP Martin went on to say that law-abiding citizens have nothing to
01:30fear from TTPS officers as their focus remains firmly on criminals and their
01:35actions are guided by professionalism, accountability and respect for the
01:40rights of all law-abiding citizens. Meanwhile, DCP Operations Junior Benjamin
01:47adds that public cooperation is vital during this period and encouraged people
01:52to work with the police by sharing any information that may assist in
01:56apprehending offenders, locating illegal firearms or uncovering criminal
02:01activity. He says partnership is crucial and every piece of information, no matter
02:07how small, could make a significant difference.
