00:00The fight is just getting started. These were the words used by Commissioner of
00:05Police Ula Hairwood Christopher in a statement today, as she revealed that
00:10since the state of emergency was declared, 126 suspects have been
00:15arrested and 17 firearms seized. Additionally, over 675 rounds of
00:22assorted ammunition have been recovered by officers during 257 anti-crime
00:28operations across the 10 police divisions since the SOE was declared
00:33five days ago. During intelligence-led exercises, the Commissioner says 275
00:39priority offenders were targeted by officers and there have been over 1,000
00:44searches since Monday. Commissioner Hairwood Christopher says,
00:48the powers granted to officers under the SOE regulations are allowing us to push
00:53back against the proliferation of gang and gun violence in our country. We have
00:59maintained that our actions are to ensure the safety and security of all
01:03the law-abiding citizens of Trinidad and Tobago." In a statement from the
01:09TTPS, DCP Intelligence and Investigation Suzette Martin says, the police service
01:15is committed to operating within the boundaries of the law and while they
01:19have been granted enhanced powers under the SOE, these powers, she says, will not
01:24be abused. DCP Martin went on to say that law-abiding citizens have nothing to
01:30fear from TTPS officers as their focus remains firmly on criminals and their
01:35actions are guided by professionalism, accountability and respect for the
01:40rights of all law-abiding citizens. Meanwhile, DCP Operations Junior Benjamin
01:47adds that public cooperation is vital during this period and encouraged people
01:52to work with the police by sharing any information that may assist in
01:56apprehending offenders, locating illegal firearms or uncovering criminal
02:01activity. He says partnership is crucial and every piece of information, no matter
02:07how small, could make a significant difference.
