00:00The state of Perikatan National's stability and leadership has come into question after
00:06backing Dr Mahathir Mohamad's initiative to oppose a common enemy of the Malays.
00:12Academy of Sciences Malaysia fellow Jayom Jawan said PN's move clearly shows that there
00:18are unresolved issues between Bersatu and PAS, the two key member parties of the coalition.
00:24He said it also signals a lack of confidence in the coalition's leaders, particularly PN
00:30Chairman Muhyiddin Yassin, who has competitors within Bersatu and PAS who are eyeing the
00:35top post in PN.
00:37On Thursday, Mahathir said he and several PN leaders had banded together to oppose a
00:42common enemy of the Malays, claiming that the Malays had been gradually deprived of
00:47their rights under the unity government.
00:50Political analyst James Chin of University of Tasmania said Mahathir's move appeared
00:55to be more about undermining Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim than about broader national
00:59issues.
01:01He highlighted that Mahathir had never been in favour of Anwar and had repeatedly stated
01:06that Anwar was unfit to lead Malaysia.
01:09Chin added that for PN's leaders, Mahathir's involvement may serve as a strategy to rally
01:15the Malay community under a united front.
