Son charged with murdering his parents in Sydney's west

The son of a couple who were found dead inside their takeaway shop in Sydney's west has faced court, charged with their murder.

00:14Hua Tek Chiem and Kim Hien Gao were found yesterday morning.

00:19We're all very heartbroken and sad.

00:21It's just devastating.

00:23They're such a nice couple.

00:25Us as kids and our kids have all, at one point of time, come to this fish and chip

00:30shop to be served by these wonderful people.

00:32Today, the couple's 31-year-old son, Alan Chiem, was arrested at their family home in

00:38Canley Heights and charged with their murders.

00:41I've been here 58 years and this is the worst thing that's ever happened here.

00:46It's understood these images captured Mr Chiem on a nearby roof, just before police say they

00:52were called there by a family member.

00:55Officers found the 69-year-old man and 68-year-old woman with significant injuries inside the

01:01business they ran for more than two decades.

01:04I worked for them years ago in the shop with them.

01:07They were very polite and considerate and always happy and wanting to chat.

01:13At Parramatta Bail Court, Mr Chiem did not apply for his release on bail.

01:18A professional will be engaged for the purposes of assessing my client's mental health.

01:22Alan Chiem's lawyer told the court there may be a release application on the basis of rehabilitation

01:28when his client next faces court in January.

01:32As homicide detectives continue searching for answers, locals are organising a vigil

01:38for the much-loved couple.
