Consultation launched for Woodhouse Lane Gateway Plans

Leeds City Council has published £20.9m plans with a view to improve walking, cycling and public transport journeys along Woodhouse Lane, Blenheim Terrace, Blenheim Walk and Albion Street.

00:00A consultation on the Woodhouse Lane Gateway scheme is running until the 16th of December,

00:06with views sought on these £20.9 million plans for protected cycle tracks, new pedestrian

00:12and cycle crossings, new greenery and wider pavements in the Woodhouse area of Leeds.

00:18Results from an initial consultation shaped Connecting Leeds' proposals, which span

00:23two kilometres in length and connect the University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University and Leeds

00:28Arts University, with leisure and hospitality businesses such as The Light, Merrion Centre

00:33and St John's Centre.

00:35The majority of funding will come from the City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement,

00:40and £400,000 is from Section 106 developer contributions.

00:44Planners say over 1,000 cyclists use this stretch of road daily, but there have been

00:49161 reported casualties along the route since 2014.

00:57No disrespect to cyclists out there of the world, scrap cycle lanes, that's what I say.

01:01Scrap the cycle lanes, scrap the bus lanes in my opinion.

01:04You want to have an electric car and own it, go for it.

01:06The country's in debt enough as it is, so £21 million for a strip like that in Woodhouse,

01:11I mean it's complete ludicrous.

01:12I'm an ex-taxi driver, and without a doubt when I come down that road, no, it shouldn't

01:18be finished.

01:19They should stop it as it is, it's not enough, there's not, as soon as they know they can

01:23walk, if they want to come down there they can walk, listen, that road's small enough.

01:27I think £20 million, that's a lot of money, £20 million on bike lanes in Woodhouse today

01:31which is not fair, maybe for uni students they would like it.

01:34Why are we spending £21 million on cycle lanes, yeah, we could have spent that on something

01:37better.

01:38Social housing, care, education, that's more and more important to me, there's pedestrianising.

01:44I don't think it's a bad thing, especially like the places you can rent, like the bikes

01:49and stuff.

01:50I understand how it's good for pedestrians, but 99% of people in Leeds are perfectly fine

01:57how it is anyway.
