00:00A notice from popular fast food restaurant Papi says, due to increasing concerns surrounding
00:06crime in the country, management has taken the decision to close the O'Connor Street
00:12Woodbrook location at 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 7pm on Tuesday to Thursday.
00:19Crime has just gone so out of hand. We feel uncomfortable, our staff feel uncomfortable.
00:24We're just trying to take it into our own hands instead of relying on somebody else
00:28to do it because it's been a disappointing result so far. And we're in Woodbrook, which
00:35lots of things happen in that area. We have a very nice community there on O'Connor Street.
00:41We look out for each other. We've recently in the past seen some things on the streets
00:47that are concerning. Also, our staff members leave our premises 10 o'clock in the night
00:53and we can't allow them to do that. They go to other areas of Trinidad and Tobago and
01:00it takes them a long time to get there. We just don't want them to be in danger and we
01:05want to see them the next day.
01:07Papi's is calling for increased police presence on the western end of Arrepita Avenue and
01:12the side streets.
01:14We would love that, patrolling every night, let's say, for a couple of hours every day.
01:20That would be great. If that's the case, we will open every day, you know, if we felt
01:26really good and safe and comfortable. And, you know, we have customers sitting down outside
01:32as well, like eating their food. You know, it's just I know for sure customers just like
01:38to get their food and run to their cars and leave and go eat in their homes. So it would
01:43be nice if they see police patrolling, then they will feel comfortable to sit outside
01:47and eat their food.
01:48Papi's management is also urging other businesses to adopt similar measures.
01:53We hope that the government does see it because it's something that we're screaming and we're
01:58telling you that this is uncomfortable and this is not the way to live. And if we have
02:03to come together as one huge country and just close businesses and a self-imposed curfew,
02:12let's just say, to make a stance that this is, we can't take this anymore, that will
02:19be a great movement if we could do that.
02:22The call comes on the heels of a robbery at Trotters on Marval Road in Newtown last Thursday
02:27night and a robbery at Little Caesars Woodbrook location last month. Three teens were also
02:33shot in the Alberta street on Sunday morning. Meantime, Nallis informs the public that its
02:38libraries will be closing at 5 p.m. on weekdays instead of 6 p.m. during the period November
02:4411th to January 10th. Nallis says the decision was taken in the interest of the safety and
02:49well-being of its staff, given the early setting of the sun at this time of year.
