The Opposition is accusing the government of using states of emergencies as its crime-fighting strategy, noting that thus far, there have been no charges with respect to the plot to kill State officials. Rynessa Cutting has more.
00:00With the extended state of emergency due to end in January next year, the opposition is asking, when will it really end?
00:08It has been argued that under justification that the required or requested extension is not a crime plan.
00:20Well, we have not heard any plan, but what we have heard specifically is that several critical operations are in train and they are in the process of dismantling gangs and criminal networks.
00:34To my respectful, simple mind, Mr. Speaker, that is normal policing.
00:45Do you require a state of emergency to dismantle gangs?
00:52Do you require a state of emergency to dismantle criminal networks?
00:57Then we will be, as it seems we are heading, in a perpetual state of emergency.
01:04Scotland notes the government had previously indicated that the threat which prompted the SOE had been neutralized.
01:12Now, however, officials say the SOE is necessary to continue to complete critical operations.
01:18He's calling for evidence.
01:19To date, there has been no arrests in relation to the alleged plot, no charges in relation to the alleged plots, and in fact, no persons have been actually detained or interrogated relative to the alleged plots.
01:35Scotland is warning of potential economic fallout from the continued SOE extensions due to decreased investor confidence.
01:43And with tens of thousands now on the breadline, he's sounding the alarm.
01:48Nationally, we are on edge.
01:51The country is in a mood, Mr. Speaker, that people don't know if we're coming or if we're going.
01:58Internationally, we have dipped in the eyes of all those who matter.
02:11And we are now, in my respectful view, on the brink of war.
02:15What I say, Mr. Speaker, is this.
02:23This government, in less than six months, will go down in the annals of history of being the worst government that has ever had the reins of power in China.
02:31We're not supporting that.
02:33The opposition's support was not required for the approval of the extension.
