00:00A few months ago, the Tunapuna community was rocked by a number of senseless murders
00:05taking place due to gang activities.
00:07Today, Neil Budasinghe from the Tunapuna Police Station Community Council said he noticed
00:13an increase in extortion in the district, adding extortion is the latest and newest
00:17form of crime being committed in this country.
00:21Budasinghe said the TTPs need to be more involved and up to date with what is happening.
00:27Crime has evolved.
00:29Crime has gone to a different level and we in Tunapuna believe that we need to assist
00:36the police in also evolving with their tools and evolving with their systems and their
00:47crime initiatives need to be evolved also.
00:51He said business owners are being monitored by criminals daily and he's pleading with
00:56all business owners to be on their alert and aware of their surroundings.
01:01This is their job and they are becoming more efficient at it and we as business owners
01:10have to make ourselves hard targets.
01:13We have to change our times, we have to do things differently.
01:17We have to be alert of anything.
01:23Mr. Budasinghe also made mention of a project that was launched last year entitled Project
01:28Eagle Eye.
01:29He deemed the project a success and his goal is to get more businesses on board.
01:34We installed cameras in a partnership with the community and the TTPs that are viewed
01:41directly in the Tunapuna station and now with these cameras being installed and the element
01:49realizing that they are being looked at, they are moving out of those areas but they
01:54are going into the areas that are easy targets.
01:59I said before that we need to make ourselves a hard target and one of the first initiatives
02:04is to get on board with this camera system with the Eagle Eye and have it installed in
02:10your neighborhood.
