00:00Well, thank God, it is Friday where the wait is finally over.
00:17Well, that's because former Manchester United star Dwight York is the new national football
00:22team head coach.
00:23The announcement comes months after former manager Angus Eve was relieved of his duties
00:28back in July.
00:29The former Aston Villa and Manchester United striker has been pleading to be given a shot
00:34at top management and now he has a chance to lead his country once more, but this time
00:40as the head coach.
00:42York was the Soca Warriors captain at the 2006 World Cup and will now have a chance
00:47to guide TNT through qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico
00:53and Canada.
00:55And he will not have to wait very long to man the sidelines with the next FIFA international
01:01window around the corner.
01:03TTFA president Kieran Edwards endorsed the hire stating Dwight's journey from a standout
01:09player to a seasoned leader in football brings a unique vision that aligns with our ambitions.
01:15The TTFA president further stated, we are confident he will guide us forward with purpose
01:20and pride as we work to make Trinidad and Tobago's presence felt on the world stage
01:25Once again, Dwight York, head coach, well, I tell you what, here's a stamp of approval
01:31as one of York's former teammates at the 2026 World Cup, Brent Sancho, shared his pleasure
01:37with the appointment.
01:38Sancho, however, cautioned that York's success will depend on the support of corporate TNT.
01:43Yeah, look, I'm happy to see somebody of York's capacity and international experience
01:51back involved in Trinidad and Tobago football.
01:54I certainly believe that York's success hinges on not just the FA or the government support
02:02but corporate as well.
02:04There is a outlay, a financial outlay that comes with qualifying for World Cup and corporate
02:11Trinidad and the rest of Trinidad have to get involved in this.
02:14This is it.
02:15You know, we now put ourselves in a position that we have to be able to support this to
02:22make sure that everything is given that will be required to qualify for World Cup is there.
02:30And with York at the helm, one of the players he will have to lean on to lead the Soka Warriors
02:35is AK Athens striker Levi Garcia.
02:38And Garcia himself is excited to work under the legend and is hopeful York can make a
02:43difference.
02:45Knowing the legacy that he has created for himself, the experience he has gained, the
02:53light he will come and shine upon the team, you know, it has some youngsters on the team
02:59that find, I hope, like myself, they know how much of a legend he is and hopefully that
03:09could rub off on them, you know, that could give them a bit of motivation because he might
03:12bring some attention around the team and whatnot.
03:17Hopefully he will be able to bring out the best, not only in the team, but in some of
03:21the youngsters to secure their future and his only right with their performances, with
03:29them rising, the national team will rise automatically.
03:33I really and truly hope and wish him all the best.
03:37Hopefully I can do it in person later on.
03:40And he can get the job done, you know, and I really, I really and truly believe in the
03:44experience that he has had and, you know, all that he has done, hopefully he can work
03:51out and he can coach in Korea and we can come together as one and get the country that boosts
03:56and he can help the youths.
