Transcript
00:00Good to see Theodore Tapa-Whitmore.
00:02Well, it's football, the equivalent of the football Oscars,
00:06as the Ballon d'Or award for the sports best player was awarded today.
00:11And it came down to two players, Barcelona's Spanish sensation Lamin Yamal
00:14and the man who Yamal replaced, former Barcelona and PSG's French winger, Ousmane Dembele.
00:22I mean, Rinaldo, Dino, whatever you want to call it, you can't unbail it.
00:30Ousmane Dembele.
00:42Ousmane Dembele.
00:46Ousmane Dembele receiving it from the GOAT himself, Ronald Dino.
01:03Well, the curtains came down at the World Championships in Tokyo yesterday,
01:06and it also came down on the career of probably the greatest female sprinter in history,
01:12Shelley Ann Fraser-Price. The Jamaican known as the Pocket Rocket closed with 17 medals,
01:17winning silver in the same country she won a first.
01:20And she said she was happy to have literally passed the torch to the next female Jamaican stars.
01:26In 2007, I was actually the reserve on the 4x1 team and I anchored that team.
01:33And we got a silver medal.
01:35Tonight, same, I started it tonight.
01:39And to be able to hand over to our young, upcoming superpowers and queens is truly fantastic.
01:52To be able to give them the opportunity to go for gold, because ultimately that's what I wanted to do.
01:59I really wanted to make sure I gave them a great start, because I knew we had a good team and we were contenders.
02:05And, you know, for me, we didn't get the gold, but we got a silver medal from a brilliant one.
02:11So all in all, we didn't put any medal on.
02:13So we have to be grateful for what we accomplished.
02:18Mommy rocket.
02:19Well, there's no love lost between India and Pakistan.
02:22However, India are unapologetic about their dislike for their neighbours,
02:26as they insist it's no longer a rivalry between them.
02:30Well, both teams refuse to shake hands again following India's six-wicket win over Pakistan at the Asia Cup.
02:36This is the second time the sides have met since a four-day conflict between the countries in May.
02:41Pakistan posting 171 for five from their innings in Dubai.
02:46But a 105-run partnership from Abhishek Sharma and Shubham Gill helped defending champions India to a six-wicket win.
02:54Both teams have two more matches in this Super 4 stage and could still meet in the final.
02:59India have now won 11 and tied one of their 15 T20 matches against Pakistan,
03:04something India's captain was keen to highlight after the win.
03:13I believe that you should stop asking questions about this rivalry.
03:17Because to me, if teams are playing 15 to 20 matches, and if it's tied at 7-7, or if one is ahead at 8-7,
03:25then you can say that's good cricket, or a good rivalry.
03:29Now, if it is 13-0 or 10-1, I'm not sure what is the exact statistic.
03:35But this is not a rivalry anymore.
03:37TNT, Guyana.
03:40All right, let's head to the tennis courts where it was a mixed day for the Americans in two finals.
03:45The American women were trunced by the Italian women in the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup.
03:50But they tasted success in the Lever Cup final after outlasting Team Europe as part of Team World.
03:56Italian World No. 8, Jasmine Paolini, winning the decisive contest against World No. 7, Jessica Pegula.
04:05The Europeans won both singles ties in straight sets, so there was no need for a doubles match.
04:11They are very strong today with the United States.
04:19I think we didn't expect to win.
04:24They are really strong. They play amazing.
04:27So we're really happy about this win because we know that was really tough.
04:33They'd already built up a big 9-3 lead with a clean sweep of Saturday's matches.
04:38But top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz gave the Europeans some hope, beating Argentina's Francisco Sarundolo in straight sets to leave his team three points behind.
04:48Roger Federer enjoyed that.
04:50Germany's Alexander Zverev had the chance to level the scores to force a doubles playoff.
04:54But he was beaten by American Taylor Fritz as Team World completed a 15-9 win,
04:59sparking celebrations from their captain and eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi.
05:04It's their third trophy in eight editions of this tournament.
05:08Just the energy from the team, it just, it feels, the moments of winning feel so much better.
05:16The moments of losing feel so much worse because you're doing it for all these guys.
05:21So it just, it fires me up so much.
05:23I've always just felt like I play my best tennis in these team environments.
05:26Seeing a legend of the sport like Andre jumping out of the seat cheering for me,
05:32it's just, it's impossible not to be so fired up and just like give it everything you have at every point.
05:39Oh, the old Andre Agassi.
05:41Eastern Europe fills our need for speed where Max Verstappen has worked his way back into contention for Formula One title.
05:48Well, that's after he led the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from start to finish in a disastrous race for the overall leader,
05:56Oskar Piastri.
05:57The driver crashed out on the very first lap of the race in Baku, having started down in ninth place.
06:05It cuts his lead in the standings from teammate Lando Norris.
06:08Out in front, four-time world champion Verstappen led from start to finish,
06:12winning with Mercedes' George Russell in second and Carlos Sainz clinching Williams' first podium of the season.
06:20Oh, let's get Red Bull in the mix as they officially parted ways with former team principal Christian Horner
06:28after firing him back in July.
06:30Horner was released after a female employee accused him of sexual harassment.
06:35Horner, though, walked away with a severance of $108 million.
06:41Horner was released from operational duties in July, 17 months after being accused of inappropriate behavior by a female colleague.
06:50But Red Bull have only now announced the Britons' formal departure.
06:54The 51-year-old spent 20 years at the helm of the six-time F1 Constructors champions.
07:00All right, let's pedal across to Africa, where the Cycling Road World Championships is happening in Kigali, Rwanda.
07:07And Belgium's Remco Evantwoel is off to a great start, winning three of the four-time trials to take the lead in the championships.
07:13At the Road World Championships in Rwanda, Belgian cyclist Remco Evantwoel has won a historic third straight time trial world title.
07:25He caught and passed Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar, despite starting a couple of minutes after him.
07:31Evantwoel was the only rider to break the 50-minute mark on a tough 40-kilometer course through the capital Kigali.
07:37It's the first time the championships have been held on the African continents.
07:40Well, ticky-tack-tack, it's a wrap.
07:44You know, play of the day.
07:48It's a lovely day for cricket in Australia.
07:50Kirkley Ambrose steams into Geoff Marsh, and Gus Logie holds on to a beauty at short leg.
07:56Wait, error detected.
07:57Forgive me for getting carried away with thinking of a West Indies versus Australia test match.
08:06It was just brilliant from TKR against Guyana Amazon Warriors in Sunday's Republic Bank CPL final at Providence Stadium.
08:13The short vote from Andrew Russell to Quinton Sampson resulted in Karen Pollitt taking a beauty close-in to send him packing for note.
08:20For the night riders.
08:20That's what you call using your grave matter.
08:25And it led to a win in the end, which is why the pair of Russell and Pauly combined for tonight's TV6 play off the day.
08:33Well, now we finally know that Sampson had other weaknesses besides Delilah.
08:38Well, that's it for sport for the team.
08:40I'm James Saunders.
08:41For the team, I'll catch you later.
08:42I'm James Saunders.
