Calypso's Cape Crusader, Dr. Roy Francis Cape, passed on last week. Roy Cape transitioned on Thursday at the age of 83. Family, friends, artistes, bandleaders and pannists were among those giving the legendary musician his flowers upon his passing. Rynessa Cutting has more.

00:00Some called him the Duke Ellington of Calypso music, others dubbed him Calypso's cape
00:29crusader. Those closest to him affectionately called him Pappy. Regardless of what name
00:36he went by, the name Roy Cape is synonymous with big brass soca, calypso, culture and
00:42good old times. Dr. Roy Francis Cape was the last of the veteran band leaders with over
00:5660 years in the business. The Roy Cape All Stars was formed in 1980 but years later was
01:02changed to The All Stars. The band boasted artists like Blacks and Ricardo Drew now both
01:08deceased and the Queen of Bacchanal Destra Garcia. Colleague and friend Hollis Mighty
01:14Chalk Dust Liverpool recounts how Roy Cape came into the business. He says, Roy Cape
01:20had a very hard life having grown up in an orphanage but thankfully music saved Roy Cape.
01:50Following news of his passing, family, friends and fans shared tributes to the renowned saxophonist.

02:03of my great and loving friend Dr. Roy Cape, this one hit me hard. Every week we talk and
02:09laugh about the old times we are traveling and performing all over the world. May you rest in
02:14peace. Fly with the angels above until we meet again, end quote. Meantime, his mentee Kurt Allen
02:21said, RIEP King Roy Cape papi, we have shared great memories to last two lifetimes and I will
02:28be forever thankful for the opportunities that you provided since I was the age of 17. Walk real
02:34good, end quote. Roy Cape fathered five children. His daughter, Joanne Cape Julian, shared words of
02:41comfort. Y'all know that my brother passed away last year. So I'm still dealing with that. And now
02:48my father passed away yesterday. Um, but this morning I want to declare to you that God is
02:53still good. You know, he is a stronghold. Okay. And in him, I put my faith and my trust in and he
03:00will take me through this. My family is grieving. Yes, we have lost an icon. But this morning I
03:08want to declare to you that no matter what you're going through, God is still good and he's still
03:12worthy of the honor and the glory. In 2011, Roy Cape received an honorary doctor of letters from
03:19the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.
