Severe storms to leave the Northeast saturated just in time for Debby's impacts

  • last month
Severe thunderstorms are soaking the Northeast early this week, leaving behind a soggy mess just before Debby tracks up the East Coast with even more rain.
Transcript
00:00to help us break down the forecast with also a touch of what's going on right now in the northeast
00:05separate from Debbie we're joined now by AccuWeather hurricane expert and also northeast forecast
00:10expert Matt and Ben so Matt thanks for making time for us here today uh you know separate from Debbie
00:16there's a trough in the northeast not quite deep enough to scoop Debbie up but it is causing some
00:21trouble out there right now and really the precursor of what's going to be some issues
00:25with Debbie later on this week so we're dealing with this trough digging through the northeast
00:29producing widespread not only heavy rain but severe weather concerns here for this evening
00:34stretching from Ohio all the way back to New Jersey parts of New York and of course a good
00:38chunk of Pennsylvania that is the main concern here for this evening the heavy rain threat but
00:42then on top of that we have flash flooding isolated tornadoes and the risk for severe
00:47thunderstorms with strong gusty winds but it's a fact that these storms are just training over
00:51the same spot they keep moving over these similar spots that they're producing heavy rainfall
00:55that's leading to the flooding threat here across portions of the northeast and especially
00:58through the central Appalachians that'll be the concern Jeff as we headed this evening and into
01:03tonight and Matt if we take radar we can zoom in on the New York metro a lot of pavement here about
01:0822 million people facing a flash flood threat in the immediate New York metro and right now we have
01:13some ongoing flash flooding on the north side and we have additional heavy rain coming in from north
01:18central New Jersey so the concern Matt is pretty significant in these areas that have lots of
01:23pavement and accelerated runoff so how do you expect the evening to play out here in New York
01:28and even parts of the Philadelphia metro yeah a couple rounds moving through here Jeff so you
01:32have one round moving through now you look towards central Pennsylvania there's another round of
01:36storms and then the third round back into the western part of Pennsylvania all these moving
01:40from west to east inundating similar areas that have been hit hard already so obviously all the
01:45rain coming down at once not a good thing because like you mentioned so many so much the area is
01:50paved the water has to go somewhere and unfortunately it just piles up in a lot of spots
01:54so a couple rounds of heavy rainfall into tonight is going to exasperate the flooding concerns here
01:59in the northeast particularly the major metro areas and then if we jump ahead to the future of
02:04Debbie kind of finally by Friday we expect Debbie to begin to move and that'll be a help to the
02:09southeast but it's to the detriment of the northeast so we are expecting after a brief break
02:15for some though heavy rain to return so do we expect to see additional flooding on Friday and
02:21how how much of the the ground do you think will be saturated so will we have a chance to recover
02:26from round one before Debbie comes in yeah obviously all we have all the rain that's coming
02:30down here for this evening and tonight it's going to saturate the ground out there and then here
02:34comes Debbie and just not much of a break here we're talking about a break tomorrow into Thursday
02:38then already by Thursday night that rain starting to move northward towards the northeast heading
02:43into Friday and that is a big question right now just how fast is that rain going to come down this
02:47is a tropical air mass so it's going to produce intense rainfall amounts over a very short period
02:52of time you can see especially the interior areas of the northeast anywhere from four eight inches
02:57from Maryland back through Pennsylvania up on into upstate New York and keep an eye out even the areas
03:01that have not been hit hard with rain maybe in the last day or two but uh northern New England
03:06remember Vermont's been hit hard over the last couple of weeks all of these folks will have to
03:11keep an eye out as Debbie comes northward with this intense rainfall expected with the storm
03:16all right we appreciate your analysis uh and if you if you're not aware Matt Benz worked for quite
03:21a bit in local television as well where most of us on the broadcast side come from uh so uh Matt
03:26you're a natural and you still got it my friend thank you very nice all right
