00:00 Midfielder Kieran Backus is one of three MacArthur FC players charged over the betting scandal,
00:07 which allegedly involved the manipulation of yellow cards for the purposes of spot fixing
00:12 during two matches late last year. Police allege MacArthur captain Ulises Davila took
00:18 instructions from a man, believed to be in South America, to organize yellow cards at
00:23 certain points during the two matches. It's alleged Mr Davila recruited Mr Backus and
00:29 fellow MacArthur player Clayton Lewis to participate by paying them $10,000. The allegations relate
00:35 to two A-League matches in November and December, and police allege failed attempts were made
00:40 to manipulate yellow cards in another two matches in April and early May. Detectives
00:46 from the gaming unit of the state's organized crime squad arrested the three men a fortnight
00:50 ago, charging them with numerous offenses including engaging in conduct that corrupts
00:55 the betting outcome of a game and participating in a criminal group. Mr Backus fronted Campbelltown
01:02 local court this morning where he didn't enter a plea, and his matter was stood over until
01:07 next month. He walked from the court on bail and he won't be required to appear at his
01:13 next court mention. Police say investigations into the matter are continuing.
