00:03EMDR therapy gave Katie Bird a different outlook.
00:06EMDR genuinely changed my life.
00:09She'd sought support from a psychologist to deal with sexual abuse she suffered as a teen.
00:14She credits the treatment with her decision to go to the police.
00:18I would have never made a report if I didn't do EMDR.
00:22I just wouldn't have been able to.
00:26This is EMDR in action.
00:28It uses bilateral stimulation, usually eye movement,
00:34to help the brain process distressing events.
00:38What we think happens is when we ask people to think about the memory,
00:42we get them to put it into their working memory.
00:44And then by focusing on something else,
00:47it helps the brain to process the memory in a way that it wasn't able to at the time.
00:51EMDR is an effective treatment.
00:53It's as effective as the other exposure treatments.
00:57Two years after she first spoke with police,
01:00Dr Bird was told prosecution would not proceed because she'd had EMDR.
01:06Their argument was that my testimony, what I could explain happened to me, was altered.
01:12If we look at the evidence, EMDR doesn't actually lend somebody to actually having false memories any more than anything,
01:21any other kind of intervention.
01:22The Commonwealth DPP says it's unable to comment on specific cases, but that each prosecution is assessed in line with
01:29its prosecution policy.
01:31EMDR advocates say that Dr Bird's case isn't isolated.
01:35I certainly believe that the guidelines should be updated to reflect the latest evidence because I don't think current decisions
01:43about the role of EMDR is consistent with what we know.
01:46EMDR therapy is incredible and it is life changing.
01:51I think that more people are probably going to realise that and I don't want it to stop people from
01:57being able to seek legal justice.
01:59FORGING A PATH FOR OTHER SURVIVORS
02:03The deaths are indeed haveильно and they can't companiesag corporate a family-completed夢 to become more of a misconception.
02:06The deaths are deaths of decades of decades before some rains andrings to come.
