As the investigation into the murder of Andy Daniel widens, it is being linked to the Strategic Services Agency. Police believe that Daniel's phone may contain critical information to help them in his murder case.

But as Mark Bassant explains, there's a potential hurdle investigators now face in gaining access to information on his phone.

00:00 Andy Daniel's assassination was described by several intelligence sources as a methodical
00:06 hit engineered from the bowels of the Strategic Services Agency, the SSA, as mentioned in
00:12 an exclusive Sunday Express article written by this investigative journalist.
00:17 Daniel was shot and killed by highly trained personnel that police believe were attached
00:21 to a hit squad within the SSA.
00:25 It was last November that Daniel met his demise near the car on the flyover when he pulled
00:29 a side on the shoulder.
00:31 Following the shake-up at the SSA two weeks ago, in which SSA Director Major Roger Best
00:36 was sent on administrative leave for allegedly hiring several members of the Jerusalem Bride
00:41 Church who were unqualified, a broader picture of a national security threat was unravelled
00:47 that included the death of Daniel, who several intelligence sources say had been under surveillance
00:52 for several weeks prior to his murder.
00:55 And now, months later, as homicide investigators continue their investigation into Daniel's
00:59 killing, they believe that key information from his Apple iPhone could assist them in
01:04 further piecing together the last few months of Daniel's life and other key information
01:10 that could prove useful in his murder investigation.
01:13 However, there's only one problem.
01:16 Daniel's iPhone is locked.
01:17 Senior sources told TV6 News that this will pose some challenges as they now have to write
01:22 to Apple in the US to gain access to his phone, which is password protected and encrypted.
01:28 This in itself could also pose a legal challenge for the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service,
01:36 who may need to approach a US court to have its request granted.
01:39 In 2014, Apple started building encryption into iPhones that can be unlocked only with
01:44 a given device's password, meaning even Apple cannot bypass the security.
01:50 The technology has frustrated US law enforcement authorities, who say Apple has given criminals
01:55 a safe haven.
01:57 Sources in the know about Daniel's ongoing murder investigation say that their key camera
02:02 images of personnel were possibly at his Arima Crossings home when he left the country in
02:06 July.
02:08 Sources say that the app on Daniel's phone allowed him to detect motion near his home
02:12 and also access camera footage on his iPhone, which would have shown exactly who was on
02:18 his property at that time.
02:20 The locks in Daniel's house were changed while he was away and police believe that the video
02:24 images on his phone show exactly who changed the locks to his home that he shared with
02:29 a senior SSA relative.
02:31 Meanwhile, sources say that they expect further shake-ups at the SSA following information
02:36 reported by several intelligence sources outlining several breaches of security at the SSA over
02:42 the last few years.
02:44 Mark Besant, TV6 News.
