Not so fast, says Transport Commissioner Clive Clarke in an immediate response to questions about the THA Chief Secretary's concerns. He says it's no true to state that the THA was not informed of the presence of Licensing Officers in Tobago, as he personally met with the Chief Administrator. Mr. Clarke spoke with TV6's Elizabeth Williams.
00:02 I want to take the opportunity to say that on my visit to Tobago, to this trip, and for this exercise,
00:11 I took the opportunity to also meet with the Chief Administrator,
00:19 and we had some cordial discussions on operations,
00:23 and what we think will even make the relationship one that will quell some of the challenges and issues we have been hearing in the public domain.
00:35 I want to put it that way.
00:36 So I met with the Chief Administrator, and we are seeing how we can treat some of the issues that will quell some of the concerns we have been hearing from the political side of things.
00:47 Transport Commissioner Clive Clark sought to make one thing clear.
00:51 There is a difference between information and permission.
00:54 This exercise, normally we will come here, once we are conducting enforcement, it is not the norm for us to seek permission to conduct enforcement.
01:05 However, on this exercise, we did come here in that, in the midst of a collaborative effort with the TTPS of Tobago.
01:13 And once there is enforcement, we don't really take the opportunity to seek approvals for such.
01:19 But I share the view, it might be healthy for us to start to look at the possibilities of providing of level of information.
01:28 Sir Clark said there is a greater concern in Tobago, and already two people have been brought before the courts in Tobago.
01:35 One for driving without being issued a driver's license, and one for driving while being disqualified.
01:43 There is a bigger problem in Tobago, and that is the issue we are facing with persons who are driving and breaching the laws every single opportunity.
01:52 And we are saying we need to find ways and create ways to create a higher and greater level of licensing, presence and enforcement in Tobago. That is of concern.
02:02 Exercises continuing in Tobago on Monday, with officers stationed in the village of Pembroke.
