00:00If you want to live this lifestyle here in the north, you have to be able to hunt, to trap, to fish.
00:10Oh yeah, I got a fish!
00:13You can make your own clothes, you can eat, you can do everything if you have the skills for that.
00:20Traditions is an extremely important thing, and being on the land is a tradition.
00:25But living up here takes a lot of it for me, a lot of it.
00:38It's hard to do everything by yourself.
00:42The thing with living in a remote place alone is that if something happens, no one knows.
00:48God, the nearest hospital is hours away.
00:50One of the things I love about this lifestyle is, if I can imagine it, I can create it.
00:58Oh yeah, I like it.
01:03We've built this together.
01:05We've really turned this place into a family home.
01:11It's done!
01:13It's the life I want.
01:15It's like a dream home.
01:18I'm dreaming about exploring.
01:21I'm dreaming about what's next.
01:23It was on this Monday morning, and the day becoming fine.
01:24For the Harbour Grace excursion, for the boys to have a time.
01:26And just as a sailor pulled a gangway from the pier, I watched a fella pull my wife aboard a volunteer.
01:29Oh me, oh my, I heard me always cry.
01:32It's hard not to be happy.
01:33Whole new boat.
01:34Whole new dream.
01:35There's a whole house out here on an island.
01:36It's a whole new thing.
01:37It's a whole new thing.
01:38And just as a sailor pulled a gangway from the pier, I watched a fella pull my wife aboard a volunteer.
01:45Oh me, oh my, I heard me always cry.
01:50It's hard not to be happy.
01:54Whole new boat, a whole new dream, there's a whole house out here on an island.
01:59It's a whole new thing.
02:01Growing up in Newfoundland, it's an island in the North Atlantic, so you're always surrounded by the ocean.
02:13And the draw of the ocean and draw to live near that, I guess it's just part of my heritage and something I want to go back to.
02:20So I bought this old house on Little Island, old access only.
02:25What a beautiful sight.
02:27Anyone with, you know, two cents in their head would look at this thing and say throw the match to it.
02:35But even though it looks like a rotten down tub to most, go see the house.
02:40It's a dream come true, it really is.
02:45Oh yeah, look at her run.
02:47She's shining, baby.
02:49There she is.
02:54What a beautiful, beautiful diamond in the rough.
03:00This isn't a cabin like I got up in John's Barn, up in the woods.
03:03Something I built myself.
03:04This house itself is over 100 years old and it's just steeped in history.
03:08Don't get me wrong, I love my cabin.
03:11Come around.
03:12Oh yeah.
03:13But I want to call this place home and have a life revolving around boats and the tides and the currents.
03:23That's real Newfoundland.
03:25This is a traditional Newfoundland salt box built back in the day by old fishermen.
03:34This was a thriving community.
03:36There was over 200 families on this island at one time.
03:39And this house and this house beside me are the only two originalists here.
03:43Everything else is gone.
03:44That's why it's got to be saved.
03:46I was here the summer and went through it.
03:52But with my optimistic eyes, like I'm an over-optimist, I definitely didn't remember being this bad.
04:03I actually bought this cabin sight unseen.
04:06There it is.
04:07I bought this off two grainy old pictures just off the coffin.
04:11As soon as I seen the old picture of this place, I fell in love.
04:14Oh my God, this is cute.
04:17So when I got here, I seen the whole thing of rose-colored glasses.
04:20And you just see this historic, beautiful salt box home on this little hill.
04:24Just waiting to come back to life.
04:25First look.
04:28Oh no.
04:29It's wet.
04:30The roof is leaking.
04:35Oh, it's water damage or not.
04:38It's a real little house.
04:39Right now the way the house is, the rose-colored glasses are down a little bit.
04:46And I'm definitely all in on this thing.
04:49It was a stretch for me to be able to buy, even though it was a deal.
04:53And I'm at a point in my life where I really want to set those roots and not just have a cabin in the woods,
04:58but a real home to set my life up in.
05:04So I'm fully invested.
05:05Just not going back at this point.
05:08This is really the only thing I did this summer.
05:11Try to keep some rain out.
05:13But I'm worried about the wind coming in here, getting inside the house here.
05:21And it's taking this whole wall and just ripping it right off the house.
05:25Hey, me.
05:28Have a look on the inside.
05:34This here is a master squeeze.
05:38Sometimes I wonder where I get these crazy dreams, that's for sure.
05:41A lot of people will consider this a nightmare to have to repair this.
05:53It's a little overwhelming how much work is here, because this place is shagged.
06:00And really the only way to save her is this whole wall is going to come down, tear it right off.
06:11This place is so remote.
06:21I'm the only human around for thousands of square kilometers.
06:28It's pretty much just pure forest and wildlife and mountains and me.
06:35So last year my main goal was to build that cabin, which worked out pretty good.
06:48And this year I really want to focus on trapping and make more trails and just go way further into the territory.
06:54So this year I brought a dog team with me and I'm going to be traveling with dogs, which is going to be way more efficient.
07:03I had to fly everybody in because the strapline is so remote that I couldn't just get here on a sled.
07:16There is no trail access. There is nothing. So we had to fly in together.
07:19We all had to come by bush plane, so that was a big, big adventure for them.
07:30They've never been in a plane, but it went pretty smooth.
07:38But we made it and they're pretty happy. I like it so far here. Yes, I love you too.
07:46These dogs are Alaskan Huskies. They're completely adapted to this environment and this kind of weather.
07:57But even though these dogs are Nordic dogs and they're used to the cold, they still need shelter to protect them from the elements.
08:07No, we're not going inside now.
08:10Right now it's technically fall, but there's lots of snow already.
08:14And when I got here, it was minus 40. It was a huge transition for the dogs because the last couple of weeks were not that cold.
08:24So I need to get dog houses built as soon as possible.
08:27I'm not going to do a fancy building for that. I just want something airtight, a good roof, a small door so there's not too much heat getting out.
08:41And it should be good.
08:45Come here.
08:47Oh, happy dogs.
08:51This extreme cold weather got me off guard.
08:53It's not that cold that early usually.
08:56But that's how it is here. Weather is pretty unpredictable.
09:02So I have to deal with it and find a way to get this done.
09:06The logs are pretty frozen right now so the mail doesn't stick as much.
09:15I didn't grow up in cold temperatures at all.
09:18In France, the winters are pretty mild.
09:20So it was new for me when I moved up north.
09:25And I never had dogs growing up.
09:29My parents are not really dog lovers at all.
09:32But I'm making up for it now.
09:33That's it.
09:42Little mini cabins for doggies.
09:44This one just took a couple hours compared to this one that took a couple months.
09:51And I just have to do seven more of these and it should be good.
09:57I feel really responsible for these dogs.
09:59I have to make sure they're safe and they're happy.
10:05It's not just about taking care of myself.
10:08There's nine of us here now.
10:22This land has been in my family for four generations.
10:26Tradition is just special to me.
10:30Old, old, old.
10:36But at the same time, there's something inside me that's pushing forward all the time.
10:42Everything is rotten here.
10:45It's like, oof.
10:47I don't feel safe anymore in this cabin because of the roof.
10:53It can collapse this winter, okay, from the heavy snowfall.
10:57So the roof is done.
11:00I need to change it.
11:01And I've got to do it now because maybe in a few weeks the snow will come and winter will be here.
11:07I guess I'm going to start from the inside.
11:16There's dust everywhere.
11:31It was hard to breathe.
11:34Okay, so change of plan.
11:35I've got to do it from the outside.
11:38And it's high up, man.
11:40Living off grid here, you need plan A, plan B, plan C sometimes.
11:43You have to be creative.
11:55I'm always learning.
11:56I'm always experimenting new things.
12:04And I have to do it.
12:06If I don't, it's not possible to live in this home.
12:09The cuts is done.
12:11I'm just going to put the chain into the big hole there.
12:15And I'm hoping everything will just come off the roof.
12:21So that's the plan.
12:23Hopefully this one is going to work.
12:25Otherwise, I don't know what I'm going to do.
12:28I'm going to cry in the woods.
12:36All righty.
12:37This is a good job.
12:39This is very stressful, actually.
12:47The first one is always the worst.
13:04Come on.
13:06Come on.
13:07Come on.
13:10Oh!
13:15Come on!
13:17Ah!
13:22It's stuck there.
13:24Ah!
13:26Yeah!
13:40Snow shoes.
13:42Snow shoes.
13:44Right now we're in the fall months.
13:46once. The snow just came about three days ago. Coming up, the river is going to freeze.
13:56We're going to be able to go hunting soon. So now is the right time to start building
14:00a cache. Are you good? Oh yeah.
14:04The food cache is very important because we're hoping to get some caribou. We want to be
14:09able to store it up there, away from the elements and away from the animals as well.
14:16You've got to cover your head because there's going to be a lot of snow flowing.
14:27Our homestead is a work in progress. We have so many ideas and dreams for this place.
14:34Living off the land. Nice. We've got a rabbit.
14:38And teaching our kids traditional bush skills.
14:41Pick it up and smack it down.
14:44Yes.
14:46A food cache is going to be new for me and I love learning.
14:51I'd like to take this.
14:52Okay. I'll start taking branches off of this one.
14:55All right.
14:56Back away from my tree, man.
14:58All right. I'll do this one. See?
15:01How far up? Just here.
15:02Okay.
15:03Polar bears, they can't get up here because they don't know how to climb.
15:14But anything else, they can still get it. But we're going to put like metal containers
15:18and then we'll put a lid on it.
15:20All right.
15:21Because we've got really smart animals around here like wolverines.
15:28So we need four posts. We have three already. Natural trees. And then the other one's going to go right here.
15:35Do you have a gun nearby?
15:48Yeah. Where is it? Right there.
15:50Right there.
15:51Okay. Good.
15:52It's a little bit iffy for polar bears.
15:57Usually they go out into the Hudson Bay to go hunt. Like a month ago, they would have done a month ago.
16:03But this year, the ice froze too late.
16:07It's scary too. The ones that starve and I just want to kill, you know?
16:11Yeah.
16:12To eat.
16:13This is what happened to my uncle.
16:15He was target shooting.
16:17Luckily, he was reloading his rifle and a discharge at him.
16:21It was a polar bear.
16:22And he shot it.
16:24Mm-hmm.
16:25Just wanted to eat.
16:28Running into a polar bear, that threat is always there.
16:33And I know it's not the best thing to do, but I just think about that all the time.
16:51About this old abandoned house.
16:54She's a ticking time bomb and she would fall apart at any moment or any gust of good wind.
16:59So there's no time to waste.
17:01I just want to save her as quick as possible.
17:11Yeah, this is pretty rough around here.
17:13I mean, you can't even stand up there without coming through the floor, so.
17:16This needs to be reinforced in here before we can tear this wall off.
17:24If we didn't put these supports in, once we take the whole front of the house off,
17:28this will just be hanging in the wind.
17:30And this will just sag right down or snap off.
17:33Who knows?
17:34So it's just temporary for now to hold everything in place.
17:37There's definitely concern in this whole place falling down.
17:47If you were in the city, you'd be wearing a hard hat right now and a safety inspector would have this place shut down so quick.
17:52I have no desire to have a house in the city.
17:57To have a house like this, remote on an old island, that's my kind of real estate.
18:03It's a lot more than just fixing up old house.
18:06It's trying to preserve a way of life from my people, where I come from.
18:11And it's dying fast.
18:18All right, that's looking good.
18:19It's basically, instead of using a jack, every smack we're pushing the roof up higher and higher.
18:26She's coming up.
18:29As you can see, that's how much we've come up already.
18:37Something went wrong there.
18:39That's all right.
18:40We're going to maintain with the traditional building technique, which is zero measuring tools.
18:46Just get it done with scraps and stones and stick it together.
18:53Wow, that's off.
19:02Oh, my God.
19:05I mean, we're leveling this up, but I can already tell, but let's not come square.
19:09There's a big hollow here on the floor.
19:12The thing I'm going to have to do is go underneath right here, jack up the floor a little bit, square up the rest of the house.
19:17If that makes sense.
19:19We'll see.
19:24I don't mind a lot of things.
19:27But something about crawling underneath this old house and so tight down there,
19:32it really does make you feel a little bit uneasy.
19:36I'm just going to have to do it, I guess. I don't know.
19:40We're a long way from the hospital.
19:42I really like my solitude in the bush.
19:45It's just your little world.
19:46But sometimes you can get lonely.
19:47So...
19:48Okay, come on.
19:49It's nice to have company.
19:50Kate, Wolf.
19:51Come on, guys.
19:52Kate, come in.
19:53Come in.
19:54Oh, good boy.
19:55Oh, good boy.
19:57Oh, good boy.
19:58Oh, good boy.
20:00I place the dog houses around the cabin so I can keep an eye on them and see it in the bush.
20:02You see it in the bush?
20:03It's just your little world.
20:05But sometimes you can get lonely.
20:07So...
20:08Okay, come on.
20:09Okay, come on.
20:10It's nice to have company.
20:11Kate, Wolf.
20:12Come on, guys.
20:13Kate, come in.
20:14Come in.
20:15Oh, good boy.
20:16Come in.
20:17Come in.
20:18Oh, good boy.
20:23I place the dog houses around the cabin so I can keep an eye on them and hear them at night.
20:34There's a lot of wolf activity around here and I want to keep them close.
20:38You're always that comfy?
20:40It would break my heart if something would happen.
20:43They're my best friends and my kids.
20:45Go back to sleep, bud.
20:47And I take care of these dogs but they also take care of me.
20:52Because it's been a dream for a very, very long time to be able to trap with my sled dogs.
20:58And those dogs are my only way to get me to the places I need to go.
21:06Wolves hate having other canine around.
21:09They will come check it out either by curiosity or just getting rid of the competition.
21:14Last year, when I was building the cabin, I had to shoot one right next six yards from my tent.
21:23So, of course, there's wolves around and I want to be careful.
21:27Right now, I have half of the dogs free and half of the dogs tied up.
21:34Oh, good girl! What were you?
21:36Some of the dogs, I don't trust them fully loose around the cabin because I know they would run pretty far away from the cabin.
21:44I'm scared because I have traps set up and I don't want them to be caught and hurt.
21:55So, that's why I want to build a pen here.
21:57So, for the dogs that I can have fully loose, they will be loose in the pen.
22:03And I know the wolves won't be able to get to them if they come sneak around.
22:07And they can play and be chain free, you know?
22:10Buckeye, come here!
22:23Buckeye, come on, stop it!
22:25Buckeye is a bro digger and spends probably like 22 hours every day to dig holes everywhere.
22:38Working in the gold is challenging. Everything takes more time, more effort.
22:45The tree is frozen.
22:47But you can't let the cold stop you.
22:51There are so many things that need to be done you can't stop.
22:59That's it. I can try to break dogs in and see if it works.
23:04Come on, guys!
23:07Come in!
23:08Oh, good boys!
23:10Michael!
23:11You ready, man?
23:13You're going to be nice.
23:14Good boys!
23:17Come on, Nummy!
23:18Oh, I know you want to escape. I don't trust you.
23:19I don't trust you.
23:25Hey, bud!
23:27You guys like to get?
23:29Oh, they're cute.
23:31You're going to pee all over the place now.
23:35Last one.
23:37Buckeye, come here!
23:39Come here, Buckeye!
23:43Buckeye, come here, bud!
23:44Buckeye is always loose.
23:46Hey, guys! Where is Buckeye?
23:48But usually he's following me everywhere, so I'm not sure where he is right now.
23:57Buckeye, come on, buddy!
23:59I'm wondering if you took off further than usual.
24:05It makes me so worried because of wolves around and all the traps I have.
24:11If we get caught in a trap, we would definitely be hurt or be killed if it's a big conny bear trap.
24:18So, yeah, it's not good.
24:26Come on, bud!
24:27Everything you do for the first time, it's hard.
24:42But I'm not scared of failing because I'm learning.
24:45All right, come on!
24:46All right, it doesn't work.
24:47It's still stuck there.
24:48Whoa!
24:49Whoa!
24:50Whoa!
24:51Ahh!
24:52The roof is farting down inside!
24:55It's still stuck there.
25:09Whoa!
25:12The roof is falling down inside.
25:16I'm going to try to lift it up.
25:19Put some shingle on the knees to make it slide better
25:22because now if the roof goes down inside, I am .
25:33Oh, yeah.
25:34Okay, at least the roof is going hot.
25:40Okay.
25:42What I have to do now, put a pulley over there
25:46so it's going to pull upward and not downward.
25:53I really want to make it done before it gets dark.
25:59Sometimes some work can be overwhelming.
26:02I am the only person on this instead.
26:06So the job needs to be done by me.
26:10There is a responsibility to it and also there is a pressure.
26:13Okay.
26:16If it doesn't work, you know, I'll have to cut it in pieces.
26:22You know.
26:24That's a lot of work, though.
26:27Oh, man, that's...
26:30Yeah, let's do it.
26:32Yeah, let's do it.
26:34Yeah, let's do it.
26:48Whoa!
26:50Come on!
26:52Oh!
26:59I'm very disappointed now.
27:02Oh!
27:06Maybe I have an idea.
27:10Butter!
27:12It's here.
27:15Something stuck here.
27:16It wasn't completely cut.
27:21Oh!
27:23Yeah!
27:25Oh, yeah!
27:27That side is completely free.
27:33Twenty minutes.
27:35Sun left.
27:36Sun left.
27:50Whoa!
27:54Whoo-hoo!
27:56Let's go!
27:57Come on, come on, come on!
27:59Whoo-hoo-ha-ha-ha!
28:01Whoa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
28:03Whoo-hoo!
28:05They're so busy!
28:07Hey!
28:09You know, ten minutes to sunset.
28:12Oh, man.
28:14Whoo!
28:16Oh, that was a big job!
28:20Whoo!
28:22Ah!
28:24Ah!
28:26Ah!
28:28Ah!
28:29Ah!
28:32Are you ready?
28:33Ready.
28:35The word for a cash in Cree is a dish of Patagon.
28:39Lift.
28:41And knowing Gilbert, he'll probably want to go big.
28:45This project here is the best project for me,
28:49because when I was growing up, I used to make three houses.
28:52And this reminds me of that.
28:56Let me know when you're ready.
28:57Ready?
28:58Yeah.
28:59Right there, yeah.
29:01Slowly.
29:03Whoa!
29:07Okay, nice.
29:08Now just hold it.
29:09Okay.
29:10I'll hold it.
29:11Uh, Gilbert?
29:12Hmm?
29:13How do we take down this rope?
29:14No, we just leave it.
29:16Yeah?
29:17Yeah.
29:18Okay.
29:20So I guess we'll work on the main beams, eh?
29:21Yeah, main beams first.
29:22First.
29:30We don't need to go buy any lumber for this project.
29:33This is just as traditional as it gets, other than maybe the nails we're going to be using and these hatches.
29:40Am I doing the holding or am I doing the nailing?
29:46Nailing.
29:47I'm doing the nailing?
29:48Okay.
29:49I'll do the nailing.
29:50Okay.
29:51Gilbert.
29:52Hmm?
29:53Didn't we say we were putting it on the inside?
29:54Yeah, it doesn't matter.
29:55Because we're going to lay these other ones here.
29:56Okay, but then what was the point of putting these up?
29:57Oh, yeah.
29:58Maybe the long ones need to sit on top of these, of this.
30:01Yeah.
30:02Yeah.
30:03Yeah, yeah, that's true.
30:05We adapt and change as we go.
30:07We've been doing that since we had kids.
30:09So we're used to it, we're like experts.
30:13Yeah.
30:15Yeah.
30:16Yeah, that's true.
30:18We adapt and change as we go.
30:21We've been doing that since we had kids,
30:23so we're used to it.
30:25We're like experts.
30:30Let's try to finish this now before the sun goes down.
30:36You want to try it?
30:38Very nice.
30:40Maybe I should do this while you get logs.
30:42No way, give that back to me.
30:46There's plenty of these and there are fish.
30:58Yeah.
30:59It's a fairly straightforward, simple project,
31:02but it's a lot of work to get to that.
31:05You know, it's easy to say we'll just take down poles
31:08and get the poles going,
31:10but you also have to haul them, strip them, hammer them.
31:17Good?
31:18Yeah.
31:19It's starting to look like a cache.
31:24All right, last one.
31:30Wow.
31:31Yeah.
31:32The height is good and it looks fairly straight, eh?
31:34Yeah.
31:35Go on top of it now.
31:37Mmm.
31:38Do they?
31:39Uh, no.
31:41I really don't like heights and right now,
31:44my arms are sore, I'm cold.
31:49I will come up tomorrow when there's more brace.
31:52Sometimes there's risks that you need to take,
31:56and this isn't one of them.
31:59As soon as you look under here, you can really see that they just used whatever they had.
32:16Looks like there's an old wooden toolbox down here holding up the house, for God's sakes.
32:21It's certainly sketchy.
32:22It would not be fun to have this thing fall on your head,
32:25especially this far in the woods.
32:28My God, they really didn't care about safety one bit after the day.
32:37I'm going to get this done and get the hell out.
32:41All these wedges out scares the hell out of me.
32:45Crazy to think that at some time this house was sagging,
32:49that some guy crawled in here, put a toolbox down it,
32:52and then a bunch of little rocks and scraps of wood called it good.
32:58Yeah, it's an old toolbox.
33:02Really, this whole foundation is just a lot of jack work.
33:05And you can't do it all at once.
33:06If you do it all at once, the house would crack in half.
33:08You need to just inch her up over the weeks and over the months
33:11until eventually she's nice and level.
33:13Good as new.
33:16Ready for a dance floor.
33:18But right now I'm happy with just getting her square enough
33:21to try and get my framing in.
33:36The work here, it's all dictated by modern nature.
33:39Rain is coming in two days.
33:44Rain can destroy floor of my cabin, the interior.
33:49So today I need the trust to be on the roof.
33:53No, no, no.
34:03Yeah, awkward.
34:08All right.
34:10Yeah, these are pretty heavy.
34:11Like we'll say like 60 to 80 pounds.
34:14It's pretty awkward and heavy to lift it up.
34:19Looking back 20 years ago when I finished to build the roof,
34:26my dad said, you know, I should put trusses on.
34:29And I told him, you know, that I didn't want to.
34:31I really wanted to do it my way.
34:36And now I've got real trust.
34:38All right.
34:40This is the way my father wanted me to do it.
34:43Take your turn.
34:44Okay.
34:46My dad passed away about, yeah, three years ago.
34:49Oh!
34:51But I'm pretty sure, you know, if dad would be back,
34:54he would be very pleased, you know, that I'd finally listen to him.
34:57What a beautiful day.
35:07Oh, man.
35:08I love when everything goes fine.
35:11You know, I'm just trying to do my best to make sure everything.
35:15It's right.
35:17Oh!
35:20Oh!
35:21Anger or joy.
35:30Nothing is permanent.
35:33Changes is part of life.
35:36And we have to add them.
35:42They have no choice.
35:51It's about at least 10 feet.
35:52So, oh yeah, I can hurt myself very much here.
36:00There we go.
36:04It's heavier than I thought.
36:07As always.
36:09Thank you, baby.
36:11You can do that.
36:14When I talk to myself when I'm kind of scary.
36:17Oh, right.
36:18Oh, man.
36:19It's a good way, you know, to breathe.
36:24Yeah!
36:25And I'm more in control.
36:27Compared to just...
36:29Oh!
36:30Oh!
36:34Oh!
36:42Oh!
36:43Oh!
36:44Oh!
36:45Oh!
36:47Oh!
36:48Oh!
36:49Oh!
36:51Oh!
36:52Oh!
36:53Oh!
36:54Oh!
36:55Oh!
36:56Oh!
36:57Oh!
36:58Oh!
36:59You know, I'm so happy, but I'm just tired.
37:00I just want a beer and a good bed.
37:01Oh!
37:02Oh!
37:03Oh!
37:04Oh!
37:05Oh!
37:06Oh!
37:07Oh!
37:08Oh!
37:09Oh!
37:10Oh!
37:11Oh!
37:12Oh!
37:13Oh!
37:14and it worked.
37:15But right now, because of the weather,
37:18I need help just to make sure the job will be done fast,
37:22but also safely.
37:24All right, be careful, man.
37:26Almost there.
37:27I asked a friend to a friend, Jeremy,
37:29to help me out.
37:31So does it fit?
37:32Yeah.
37:33Okay, cool.
37:34And we're gonna make it done today.
37:44I'm so glad we are two, though.
37:51It's a relief, actually.
37:52It feels so much stress, you know, lately,
37:55doing everything myself for now.
37:57It's just, wow, a lot of weight off my shoulder.
38:03I didn't quite beat the rain, but it's almost there.
38:10This place, it's so important to me.
38:14It's like I belong to this place,
38:16so I'm glad I did it right.
38:30These past couple of days, it's been fairly warm,
38:32but today, it's gotten pretty cold.
38:36North wind is really picking up.
38:40It's cold, eh?
38:4110 degrees is a big difference, right?
38:44Yeah, it's crazy how much the colder weather
38:47really changes the way you work.
38:48It's a gig.
38:50The nails are really cold, the metal's cold.
38:52It's a gig.
38:53It's more lovable, and it's cold.
38:56What are you doing?
38:58Let me work.
39:01But this isn't something I do in the summer
39:05when there's a bunch of bugs around us, you know?
39:07Definitely.
39:08The time where you can't breathe.
39:09Can't breathe.
39:10In June.
39:19You want me to come up to put in an anchor and get a hoist up?
39:22Well, yeah.
39:24You want to do that?
39:25No, but I should.
39:29You can have fears, but you have to be able to confront them.
39:32It's really part of living up here, because fears are going to hold you back, and it makes
39:41you a much stronger person.
39:42Don't drop the nut.
39:43It's going to be hard to fire.
39:45How much weight do you think this is going to put on?
39:50It says 1,000 pounds, right?
39:51We'll have to test it.
39:52Oh.
39:53Oh, Gilbert, don't fall.
39:54See?
39:55Oh.
39:56Gilbert.
39:57I'm just kidding.
39:58I'm just kidding.
39:59All right.
40:00Let's test it out.
40:02This is definitely a nice addition to our homestead,
40:04because there's already been a bear that's been around here,
40:07and I'm just kidding.
40:08I'm just kidding.
40:09I'm just kidding.
40:10All right.
40:11Let's test it out.
40:12This is definitely a nice addition to our homestead,
40:14there's been a bear that's been around our cabin,
40:16and they're known to destroy things,
40:18even things you wouldn't think about, like a gas can, for example.
40:21So being able to put all our stuff up here, it's great.
40:26You ready?
40:27Yep.
40:32It's working.
40:34Way easier than hauling stuff off the ladder.
40:36Yeah.
40:41That poor street looks like it's going to bend.
40:43Yeah, bend.
40:44All right.
40:45All right.
40:46Let's go.
40:47All right.
40:48You got it?
40:49Yeah.
40:50See?
40:53Time for a drink.
40:54Yeah, we should have coffee.
40:56Yeah, to celebrate.
40:57I mean, it's not wine, but this'll do.
41:02Looks nice from up here.
41:03Yeah.
41:04Well, I'm happy we got to do this together.
41:06Mm-hmm.
41:07Yeah.
41:08Feels like a date, right?
41:10Okay.
41:11All right.
41:12Let's move on now.
41:13Let's move on now.
41:26My dog, Balkeye, is missing.
41:28Balkeye, come on, buddy.
41:30It's just very stressful.
41:31I'm starting to be a little bit worried.
41:32Balkeye usually doesn't take off.
41:33It's usually always by my side.
41:35Come on, bud.
41:36I have a lot of traps set, and the river is not completely frozen.
41:41There is wolves around, so...
41:43It usually doesn't take off, so I'm a little bit worried.
41:47I'm going back to the cabin to see if it's...
41:50oh, .
41:51That's my bait bag, but it's empty.
41:55It was hidden under the table.
41:58Hey, buddy.
41:59Hey, buddy.
42:00This is the bucket table.
42:01I have a lot of traps set, and the river is not completely frozen.
42:05There is wolves around, so...
42:07It usually doesn't take off, so I'm a little bit worried.
42:11I'm going back to the cabin to see if it's back now.
42:15Oh, .
42:17That's my bait bag, but it's empty.
42:19Hey, bud. Are you here?
42:23Oh, hey, buddy.
42:25What are you doing here?
42:27Come here.
42:29Good boy.
42:31So innocent.
42:33Good boy. Come here.
42:35What were you doing, big boy?
42:37I was worried about you, bud.
42:40The first time he goes under there, I guess I just moved that wood, so I gave him some ideas, I guess.
42:49That's a beaver. That's my bait.
42:56It wasn't there, so I guess he stole it and went under to hide it and had a little feast, I guess.
43:04You were just hiding. Come here. Let's go. Come on.
43:12What was the word for you?
43:15So, good beavers.
43:19My dogs are not just pets. They're also my working dogs.
43:24Like, without them, I couldn't be that efficient here.
43:27Watch out. Coming in. Coming in.
43:29Good boys. Everyone happy? You guys happy?
43:33Oh, yeah.
43:33They helped me in a lot of chores, like trapping, pull my gear, pull firewoods.
43:40They're involved in everything I do here.
43:43They're very important in that lifestyle.
43:46My goal was to give them a safe and happy place, and I think it worked out.
43:53You guys go play. Come on.
43:54Good boys.
43:56Good boys.
