00:00Oh man, look at this weather. It is turning quick.
00:05Winter is pretty harsh.
00:07Just the cold in itself is a challenge every day.
00:10Pretty freaking cold right now.
00:13It's minus 45. The cold has an impact on everything.
00:17Working in the winter up here, the snow, the ice, everything is a little more difficult.
00:21The cold up here keeps you humble.
00:23It will be a huge challenge.
00:25Oh, man. Oh my God, man, that's a lot of water.
00:29I can see so many things going wrong already.
00:33It's all smashed.
00:35Okay, stop!
00:37This wall is falling right now.
00:39If it falls, it's real.
00:41Oh my God!
00:44I am done.
00:59Newfoundland has a very unique draw and a power over the people that are born and raised here.
01:11No matter where I went, it could be on the other side of the world.
01:15I was always proud to be Newfie.
01:17A good Newfoundlander is like a migrating bird.
01:21They always want to come home.
01:23I've been back here now for four months and I'm more dug in now than I ever have been.
01:29There's no going back for me anymore.
01:40This is master bedroom, guest bedroom.
01:42As soon as these first three walls go up, you're going to feel like it's going to feel like a whole different space.
01:46It's going to really turn into a little house as opposed to a cabin.
01:49It's going to look good, man.
01:53This one of my best buddies, Adam.
01:55Let's go ahead and get this tacked down.
02:00He's up here to give me a hand at the project to speed up the process.
02:03And right now we're racing against winter.
02:05We're racing the first big storm, so his help is vital.
02:08With a second guy up in the woods doing stuff like this, it goes more than twice as fast.
02:16Especially when it's a very capable person.
02:18It's three or four times faster getting everything done.
02:22It's just enjoyable having your buddy around.
02:25Last time I saw Adam was up in the Arctic in Polotok, we were rowing the Northwest Passage.
02:30So it's a bit of a reunion too.
02:38We were attempting to row the Northwest Passage over a 2,000 mile journey across the Arctic Ocean.
02:42In homemade rowboats we built ourselves with really no rowing experience.
02:49Lowest point of that trip by far was when Adam injured himself and we had to part ways in Polotok.
02:56And I continued on alone.
02:58This is the first time we've been back together since.
03:01You think you ever see me again, Adam? When I've seen you in Polotok?
03:04I figured you'd frickin' wash up on shore somewhere.
03:18It's a great feeling standing back and watching it come together like this.
03:21The whole wall is all framed up, you can see where the windows are going to be.
03:25I can already picture standing down there in that room looking out the window at the woods in the morning.
03:34This is how we're going to erase that wall.
03:39A few of these logs.
03:41I'm not sure it's going to work, but we'll see.
03:43Okay, we'll lift up from the center.
03:52There you go.
03:53The plan is to use the four-to-one pulley system, hook up to this tripod and connect that to the wall and boost all the weight up while Adam secures it.
04:06All right, that should do it.
04:09Hopefully, it's going to make Polotok's wall up super easy.
04:12Yeah, you know, we don't have scaffold or high lift or anything like that here.
04:15So you've got to get kind of creative when you're working out here in the backcountry.
04:19I think we try it.
04:21Just hold it steady.
04:22Yeah.
04:23Right? We don't want this thing to slam down onto the deck.
04:34Guys, hold, hold.
04:37Okay, stop!
04:40She's up.
04:41And that looks good.
04:43It went up really easy.
04:46I was somewhat skeptical of this thing coming out of my head, but we're good.
04:51I'm happy with it.
04:53I don't really see the scale of the cabin now with the wall up.
04:55That's a big wall, a 20-foot wall.
04:58Yeah, that's great.
05:00Two more walls up, we start working on the roof.
05:11I've got a river that runs through my land.
05:17It's hard to get across.
05:20It's a barrier.
05:22And it's a problem because I know there is some very good trees on the other side of the river that could use for lumber for my future projects.
05:31And I really want to get there.
05:33I've never built a bridge in my life.
05:37It will be a huge challenge.
05:51I'm thinking to build a bridge here because the river, it's more narrow.
05:55It looks like 20 feet.
05:57I'm going to be careful because I don't want to get through the ice on the river.
06:06So this part of the land, I barely have visited, you know?
06:14One base would be here, and the other end of the beam would be over there.
06:20Man, oh my God, man, that's a lot of water.
06:33Did I get wet?
06:35Oh, yeah.
06:36Maybe a bit, but I've got some waterproof boots.
06:39Yeah.
06:40Okay, so I will have to be very careful.
06:42Whoo!
06:48This is a very nice proof.
06:50It's perfect to build the beams for my bridge.
06:59People think living in nature is suffering.
07:03For my part, it's not.
07:05Even if it's hard sometimes, I'm happy here.
07:07Oh, wow, that was a good one.
07:18Whoo!
07:20Oh, man, happy.
07:22Beautiful tree.
07:26Building a bridge like this, it's a huge project.
07:29But I really want to make it big because I want it to last.
07:33I want it to be strong and to use it for years and years.
07:40Whoa!
07:43There we go.
07:47Whoo!
07:48Very happy.
07:50Very great.
07:51Beautiful log.
07:52It's just gorgeous.
07:54And it smells good.
07:55On each side of the bridge, where the footing will be, I'm going to make a big fire in order to melt all the ice and snow, just to see if the ground is little.
08:12Very important.
08:14Otherwise, the bridge would be like this.
08:16I really want to have this base very flat because I don't want the foot of the bridge to collapse.
08:27So right now, I'm just going to let it burn.
08:31It's going to be big.
08:32It's going to be big.
08:45Winter in the Yukon, it's pretty harsh.
08:49Just the cold in itself is a challenge every day.
08:52Your fingers are frozen.
08:53Just walking outside when you have like three to four feet of snow, it's harder.
08:59Everything is more complicated.
09:04In the winter, to get water, I need to find a good spot on the river where the ice is thick enough and where it's safe to travel on and drill my hole.
09:13You need to drink, right?
09:18You need to drink, right?
09:20So, you got to get your water somehow.
09:24It just takes a lot more effort in the bush.
09:30It's a little more hard work than opening the tap.
09:34Living in town or living in the city, I don't think I could do that.
09:38I think living this kind of like makes me stronger when I'm on my own.
09:45I like to be challenged.
09:51Obviously, winter is not smart at all for any log building.
10:00Usually, people start in the summer or in the fall and then your cabin is ready in the winter.
10:04But in my case, I had to start here pretty late. Winter was already started.
10:09And I can't wait to move in because it's pretty freaking cold right now.
10:16The last couple of weeks, I got the floor done.
10:19The walls are almost done.
10:20I just have one row left until I can start on the roof.
10:23I just built those tripods because it was getting too heavy to lift them up by hand.
10:39Every step, I'm extra cautious.
10:42They're heavy logs.
10:43And if I'm crashing their logs, nobody will know that I'm hurt.
10:46That's the get-off crack you don't want to hear.
10:55I just have to adjust them all the time.
10:58They are useful, but also a pain in the ass.
11:05Okay.
11:06It's getting cold now, so it's getting harder to work with the logs.
11:26The logs are frozen, so it's hard to nail them.
11:29You have to be always careful to not make a mistake.
11:39It's looking good.
11:40I just have to cut that piece the right length so it fits in between.
11:47If I cut too short, I have a big gap in the corner.
11:50If it's too long, I can't drop it in, so it has to be kind of perfect.
11:55Perfect.
11:58You don't want to make mistakes.
12:00You can't just replace that log with a 2x4 or whatever.
12:03I have to go cut another tree and drag it back and cut it all over again and bring it up.
12:09So you can't make mistakes.
12:10You can't make mistakes.
12:25Oh.
12:36Nice.
12:37That was the last rope, so the walls are done.
12:45It was a lot of work.
12:46It took a lot of time, a lot of logs, a lot of swearing.
12:52I'm not going to put too much time on the roof.
12:54I'm just going to have a little temporary roof so I can actually move in and start living in the cabin for the winter.
13:00And then, in the spring, when it's warmer, I will do a proper roof.
13:17Ready?
13:19All right.
13:20Oh, wow, this is heavy.
13:21Yeah.
13:24That cold was brutal.
13:26Good thing we have a pencil and not a pen, eh?
13:28It would have been frozen.
13:33Today's definitely been the coldest of the year.
13:36It's minus 45.
13:37We haven't had a really cold day yet, and I'm glad we're having them because our rivers and lakes need to stay frozen so that we can use our ski-doo and go up to our cabin.
13:47And this is the best time to haul some stuff in the winter because we can use a snowmobile.
13:53So the plan right now is we need to build a flat sled so that we can bring really heavy things to our cabin.
14:01The most important item that we need to bring is our brand new stove.
14:05A wood stove is the heart of a cabin.
14:07Like, it's what keeps you warm and dry, so we need a stove to survive.
14:12Ever since moving here, like, having these minus 40 and below temperatures,
14:19now I'm realizing how much the cold has an impact on everything.
14:23Pressure's on.
14:25Is that going to work in this cold?
14:34We're going to warm it up.
14:42Oh, that looks really good, Gilbert. You did really well.
14:52You don't want to make it too wide.
14:58If you make it too wide, it's going to become a problem.
15:01You're going to hit trees.
15:04I learned this from my uncles and my dad and my mom.
15:08My mom. She's a really good carpenter.
15:13Something that's really important to Gilbert and I is to really teach our kids all these skills that can be lost.
15:20You're going to hammer this in?
15:22For them to learn their roots, not a lot of kids get that opportunity.
15:26You know, be really hands-on like that.
15:27Good job, Danny.
15:29Mikel, you want to come help Daddy?
15:32Mikel.
15:34I think he stops functioning colder than minus 40.
15:38Just like the chainsaws.
15:39He wants to fly yourself.
15:55The fire has been burning for about three hours.
15:57The ice and snow needed to be melted in order, you know, to level it.
16:01And everything is fub.
16:04So I'm very happy.
16:05happy the other fire did a very good job hey very easy i'm gonna set up the base of the bridge
16:19which is called gabion it's like a cage with rocks inside so gabion will stay there
16:28and it will hold the bridge forever
16:30look at this it's just between the lines so happy perfect look at this so now i just need to fill
16:49it up of rocks a lot of it the best way to find the rocks it's here in the river underneath the ice
16:59oh it's very cold yeah there's about two feet of water i just put my hip withers on
17:08all right and now that will be rock fishing
17:12i wouldn't swim in this water oh man it's colder than i expected actually
17:25but you know the work has to be done
17:28there is no shortcut when you're in the bush it's so much work
17:35but it is great to have this feeling of self-reliance
17:40all right it's done a few hundred pounds of rocks so heavy oh man way more rocks than i expected
18:00now two beams one two going across and i will be here at the base of the bridge
18:11next step i'm gonna bring the big beams using the snowmobile pulley system
18:19and it's a big big job
18:23is this a new stove
18:39yeah it's brand new
18:40whoa that's heavy
18:41cast iron
18:43the plan is uh we're gonna be hauling that flatbed to bring our heavy duty cast iron stove
18:50to our camp
18:50i'm worried about it because it's glass what if we break it
18:55we're very gentle
18:56getting the stove to our cabin is very hard because it's very heavy but we need a stove to survive
19:05to be dry warm it's essential
19:07how's that it's good i can see so many things going wrong already oh boy
19:14all right ready mount up
19:20everywhere on the line here there's trails there's old trails from hundreds of years ago there's new trails
19:34so we've been using a mix and now we'll be doing a bit of a new trail so we'll be cutting through
19:41and making our own trail to our cabin
19:43that hit a tree
19:47that hit pretty hard eh
19:49all right let's go check it out
19:51oh no
19:54our horse broke
19:56both of them broke
19:57oh man
19:59it's all smashed
20:01i'm glad the stove looks okay
20:04i mean this is not so bad but the slope would have been terrible
20:08yeah the trail's too tight
20:11yeah so i guess we'll have to remove
20:13that one and then this one too right
20:16you want to go remove that one over there
20:20yep
20:21so do i just cut straight across or uh like a v
20:26emily's always trying the new things the chainsaw one thing chopping down some trees
20:36this big one
20:38this big one yeah they were good
20:39i feel like i've been relying a lot on gilbert and i've never used a chainsaw
20:45yes it's intimidating but i don't want to be someone that he has to do everything for
20:50so i'm really trying to learn as much skills as i can
20:54and now i feel like i'm a little bit more self-reliant
20:57good
20:59it's good yeah
21:01it's already getting colder eh
21:02let's go before the night time comes
21:04yeah before we freeze
21:06we've had a lot of challenges today some delays
21:19it's getting pretty late in the day and i can already feel the temperature dropping
21:24so by the time we would make it to camp if we were to keep going it would be so cold
21:29so we're gonna set up a camp right in the trees and um yeah we'll start up again tomorrow
21:34the best fire starters these little branches here
21:41gilbert's spirit name basically means fire keeper
21:46he can make a fire out of anything anywhere anyhow
21:50he just lights it up within seconds so it's really fitting
21:54coffee tastes really good right now
22:03you know when you spend the whole day outside your food tastes better your sleep is better
22:08i like the fresh air
22:10yeah for sure feels good
22:13i love it
22:15it's such a beautiful night lots of stars so we're just gonna relax and recharge and admire
22:23the beauty of it
22:26we have everything we need we have our shelter our warmth we have each other we had a lot done
22:34and there's more tomorrow
22:36last one ready okay pull
22:51yeah i got a new friend and alex is my partner we've been together for a year now
23:10he lives in the bush too hunting and guiding and uh he came here to spend some time in the bush with me
23:19it's good because he's just coming in when i'm gonna start the roof so it's gonna be a good help
23:26she's already got the walls up and she's been working pretty hard on this it's been quite a big job
23:33and uh it's nice i can give her hand
23:36it's very important to me that the person i want to be with can share this part of life with me
23:43because it's it's not just a hobby it's it's me it's what i want to do it's how i want to live
23:49we're good partners
23:51push it my way yeah okay stop is it holding yeah
23:58is it high enough on your side
24:04sure work out in itself to climb in and out of this now yeah
24:19close to where i'm building there is an old trapper cabin it's an abandoned cabin everything was left
24:31behind so this place is pretty much my hardware store
24:38i'm hoping i can savage this door for the new cabin it looks like it's in pretty good shape
24:44it's not rotten that's a good find
24:48it's gonna save me a couple hours of work that uh are gonna be useful for something else for sure
24:58it's not everywhere in the bush that you have the chance to have a
25:01old cabin like this full of treasure so if you have it uh use it
25:07well that would be perfect yeah i think that should be good
25:24it's time to uh cut the hole for the door we're just trying to square the door as much as we can
25:33but we're not squaring it from the floor because the floor is probably not level anyway
25:37everything is crooked right it's logs and it's bush carpentry
25:41i spent so much time working on those logs everything is nice and tight and now i have to cut that big hole in the wall
25:50if i up the hole is there forever so it's kind of nerve-wracking
25:56it's a door it's a door oh man that's great feels like it's a an actual cabin now it was just a
26:13pile of logs and now it's a pile of logs with the door that's sweet and straight-ish
26:36this wall is falling right now and i'm scared of my role because they kind of move hard when i try that
26:57the two-by-four the logs moved a little bit i don't want this wall it would fall down
27:10not good
27:27i wouldn't change my life absolutely love it up here and that's the best part is really feeling like you have everything you need around you
27:38it's about simple things standing back in your nice little warm cabin and just just being there in the moment
27:45you got everything out here you know when you really boil it down like all we're really meant to do
28:00is what you're doing out here is you know hunt fish trap feed the fire
28:06it just doesn't get more basic than that really you know
28:10you know yeah there's a lot of sacrifices that come with it but i mean
28:14there's a whole lot of payoffs also just like waking up every day is your own
28:19this is it for me
28:21wild boy for life
28:23the only part that's missing from this whole equation is a good woman
28:25absolutely
28:26a good partner
28:27it would be that much better
28:29couple of dirty little barefoot kids running around potato sacks on
28:32oh man i would raise some feral ass kids up here
28:35i know
28:36that's really what's missing
28:38that's coming to you
28:39that's coming yeah
28:40all right let's crack on
28:43yeah i'd say it's looking pretty good
28:56it's a real looking roof solid man
28:59having adam here he's going way faster
29:04he's a professional carpenter
29:06i mean i'm a professional hillbilly
29:08it's really starting to look like something i really feel how big the space is going to be
29:20it's a whole fifty percent extra the size of the cabin i mean it's a small house now it's so exciting
29:27some heavy clouds
29:35there's a newfoundland snowstorm on its way right now it's supposed to blow hard you know over two three feet of snow
29:42you really shouldn't be roofing in the middle of winter back here like we are but if we don't get things sheeted and shingles on before sundown and the storm gets here this is going to be just a damn mess
29:57look at this weather it is turning quick am i losing light
30:11shingles got wet and they froze and the tar really doesn't like the stick to a wet shingle
30:24working in the winter up here the snow and the ice everything is a little more difficult
30:29keeps you humble that's what it does the cold up here keeps you humble
30:35these shingles have got to get on before the snow comes
30:54i was looking at the radar earlier and we got 30 mile an hour winds coming in tomorrow
30:58yeah man this is right down
31:00right down to the water
31:02there's ever been a trial by fire for a hastily built roof
31:06it's uh gonna come in the next 24 hours
31:09yep
31:11around here when you get bad weather you get bad weather and when it blows it blows
31:22we got the roof on it just in time and then the storm hit
31:33the weatherman wasn't lying the storm was definitely blowing proper
31:36and uh i woke up very happy when i seen that fresh bed of snow
31:41to know that the shingles were on tights and done the night before
31:44you leave anything undone
31:55when i'm here i don't miss too much the city
31:59you know i miss most of the people i miss my friends
32:06i really like my solitude in the bush
32:08but i also need company just to share the experience
32:14i'm not one of those weird hermits that want to be completely isolated
32:19i still love my family i love my friends i still want to be connected
32:23today's a really nice day couldn't ask for any better weather
32:39we're gonna finish our travel and hopefully we'll make it all in one piece
32:42all right okay you think you can make it that's really steep
32:57we have a big hill at the end to go up to get to our camp
33:01i i'm anticipating some issues some challenges
33:04gilbert's already flipped out on the steep hill with that skidoo so
33:09you got to be careful how much you're carrying
33:12probably better if i come off and then i'll meet you at the top
33:16that would be easier that way
33:18so i'll see you up there
33:21it doesn't look super steep but it's deep enough for it to be a problem
33:25when you have that much cargo
33:27there's so many things that can go wrong
33:29i just don't want gilbert to get hurt
33:30so far i think it's okay
33:37oh my goodness
33:41ooh oh
33:43oh that looks so heavy oh my god
33:56oh no i came off
33:57the cable
34:00the cable snap
34:02yeah i'm surprised it didn't slide all the way down the hill
34:04yeah
34:05man i'm happy i wasn't on that skidoo
34:07like the runners were just going up
34:09it would have been so scary
34:13all right we're almost there
34:15yeah we're gonna leave it there because our camp is close
34:17we dropped us off
34:19okay and then you'll come back to get that one over there
34:20yeah
34:24you think it's just bringing lumber there building a cabin put the floor walls and the roof and you're done
34:30but there's a lot more work behind it
34:32lots of obstacles and lots of travel and i'm glad i'm getting to experience it
34:36our camp is close we're lucky this didn't happen further away
34:43there's still a lot of work to do but i feel like the biggest piece is done now like we were waiting for the winter to be able to haul all the heavy stuff
34:54good it made it yeah i made it that's a big load off my shoulders
35:01yeah i feel like the most important piece that we needed for the cabin is the stove
35:07i'm really happy it made it
35:08it's gonna be a lot easier to travel back home now
35:12yeah and the trails made we're good
35:15we've made it just on time today that we can get back before nightfall and we'll get to see your kids before they go to bed
35:23let's go home
35:24all right let's go
35:25be quick
35:38so you see that vent because i just cut i'm scared and there's nothing to hold on right now in between so
35:54and
35:56camping all winter
36:00the remedy is to not cry
36:03i need to try to uh... nail something inside to hold the walls together
36:13hopefully it's good enough
36:23can i try it in there?
36:24yep
36:34workin'
36:38yeah
36:39take a look
36:40it's loud
36:42you think that's good?
36:43yeah i think that's way better
36:45not too scary anymore
36:54done
36:56now it's gonna be great i can be way faster now that i don't have to climb in and out all the time
37:03the next step is i have to start putting the purlins
37:09the purlins are the beams that go across the cabin length
37:13there we are
37:19and on top of the purlins i need some bowls
37:21a few years ago part of this valley was burned in the forest fire so there's thousands of little dry pools like this around here and they're perfect for the roof of my cabin
37:37this one right ahead of me is good
37:38i'll cut this one
37:39i'll cut this one
37:59i'll cut this one
38:00About 20 on each side.
38:18So once all the poles are nailed down to the temporary roof,
38:22just got to put a tarp over it.
38:24Then I can actually move in and start living in the cabin for the winter.
38:28Then I can just focus on trapping and go have fun.
38:33I'll assign you.
38:43I'll hold it and you pull a little bit tight.
38:46I'm pretty tight on that side. It's great.
38:54Amazing.
38:54It's not going to be a very great insulated roof, obviously.
39:00It's just for now to have a little shelter.
39:03And in the spring, when I have more time and it's a better weather,
39:08I can build a permanent roof.
39:16Hold on.
39:18The roof is on.
39:20It's a big accomplishment. I'm happy.
39:24I mean, this was just a couple of trees around here,
39:26and now it's starting to look more like a home.
39:31Like a dream home.
39:32So this is the second beam that I cut for the bridge.
39:52To get the lug on the other side, that's about 20 feet.
40:03So with the rope on the other hand,
40:05I'm just going to take this lug all the way to the other side.
40:12It's going to work.
40:13So now I've got to pull fast enough to make sure that I've got enough momentum
40:22to get this lug across the river.
40:26It's very important because if this big piece of lug
40:29gets stuck in the middle of water, I am done.
40:37It's done.
40:38You know, I was just too worried.
40:50You know, I didn't have enough momentum,
40:52but I had too much momentum.
40:54The good news is I got it across, okay?
40:57So, but the bad news is, well,
41:01the other hand, it's almost in the water.
41:04I don't know how, but I will need to lift it up
41:07and put it back here.
41:11One step at a time.
41:15This is the first bridge I'm building.
41:17I'm learning a lot here.
41:20I'm always asking myself,
41:21how can I solve this problem?
41:24Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
41:26Go, go, go, go, go, go.
41:28Woo!
41:30That's good.
41:32Woo!
41:34I just do my best.
41:36That's it.
41:37I'm not a bridge builder.
41:39I'm just a guy in the woods.
41:46Woo-hoo!
41:50Woo!
41:56He looks liable.
41:58Wow.
41:59I'm building a bridge
42:01in the middle of my land.
42:05It's amazing.
42:09You know, I see it now,
42:10and I say, oh, wow,
42:12this is another part of my land
42:14that I will be able to see
42:15and to travel
42:16and to get to woods and everything.
42:18It's a new world, you know?
42:19Woo!
42:19Woo!
42:20It feels so great
42:33just to work on my land
42:34to keep this place alive.
42:39This is the moment of truth.
42:44Building a bridge,
42:45it just inspired me
42:46to dream big.
42:49I'm dreaming about exploring.
42:51I'm dreaming about
42:52taking care of this part of the land.
42:55Dreaming about what's next.
42:57you are always going to fear.
43:11And now because I might go to
43:21this situação
43:23for a reason
43:24to love
