00:01That's spring right there, baby.
00:04Spring is fun because now everything is starting to grow again.
00:08We're gonna see the return of the geese.
00:11Everyone goes hunting for geese.
00:14I didn't expect to receive goats today.
00:19I'm like a little boy now getting a running machine.
00:22But there's lots of challenges living off-grid in the bush, especially alone.
00:27It's hard to do everything by yourself.
00:28Having animals, it brings company.
00:32You don't have the feeling of being alone.
00:35If you're living out here, no one else is gonna do it for you.
00:37You gotta just be a get up and goer.
00:39Your family is relying on you and you need to provide for your family.
00:59This is our spring.
01:04You know, we have snow for a long time, but then it thaws really fast.
01:09Now it's starting to thaw again.
01:11So we're gonna see the return of the geese.
01:14Springtime is very important in this community.
01:16Everyone goes hunting for geese.
01:17And the geese that we get now is gonna feed us for the year.
01:23This place is good because it's open space and then there's two creeks running.
01:25There's one there and then there's one nearby.
01:26And the geese, they follow the creek.
01:27And when you call them and they'll turn.
01:29So what's the first step for blind?
01:31You gotta dig this out?
01:32Yeah.
01:33The geese, they follow the creek.
01:34And when you call them and they'll turn.
01:37So what's the first step for blind?
01:39Gotta dig this out?
01:41Yeah.
01:43Yeah.
01:44Yeah.
01:45Yeah.
01:46Yeah.
01:47Yeah.
01:48Yeah.
01:49Yeah.
01:50Yeah.
01:51Yeah.
01:52Yeah.
01:53Yeah.
01:54Yeah.
01:55Yeah.
01:56We've got to dig this out.
01:58Yeah, we're going to dig it out and make it a little bit bigger,
02:00because we have a new teammate.
02:02Yep.
02:03She's going to retrieve the goose.
02:05Hopefully.
02:06This is Piper.
02:08She's a bit under a year, and she's a purebred lab.
02:14The reason why we got her is because labs are very good retrievers.
02:17So we brought Piper with us so that I can focus on getting her used to the gunshots,
02:22getting her used to staying close to us in the blind,
02:25and hopefully start training her to start retrieving some geese.
02:36This is a homemade wooden goose.
02:41The wind is coming from that way,
02:44and you've got to place the decoys in the wind direction from the blind.
02:47Okay.
02:50So we're putting all these goose decoys out so that the geese, when they're flying,
02:54they're seeing, like, oh, that looks like a good spot to hang out.
02:57And then they'll come down and check it out,
02:59and then that'll be our time to get some geese.
03:03It's warm enough, and it's sunny, and it's south wind,
03:05so they're going to be here soon because they're hearing them honking by.
03:12That's a camouflage.
03:15Geese are pretty smart creatures.
03:17Sometimes they fly above you and they see you down there.
03:20Then they turn around.
03:21Then they turn around.
03:22We're hoping to get, you know, 20, 30 geese would be nice this year.
03:28We're going to pluck them and freeze them for the year.
03:32The goose can feed the whole family because the goose is like 10 pounds.
03:36They have a lot of protein, and it's really good on the grocery bills.
03:42Where do you want this one?
03:43In the front.
03:44In the front?
03:45It's laying down here.
03:46Right there.
03:48We really got to make the most of our time while we're here.
03:51Soon it's going to get very flooded, the more it melts.
03:53So we have a very small window.
03:58It's really stressful because your family is relying on you,
04:02and you need to provide for your family.
04:05It's looking pretty good.
04:07It'll start to look very camouflaged and we're blending with nature.
04:12Now we can start looking for geese.
04:23Hold on little guy.
04:31We're going to put you here.
04:35Come on!
04:39Well, I didn't expect to receive goats today.
04:44The goats were supposed to be here in five days.
04:47Got a call from the farmer last night, and he said,
04:50OK, I'm going to drop them off, you know, tomorrow.
04:53So I just had time to build a small temporary goat pen,
04:56to welcome them, to make sure, you know, they don't run everywhere.
04:59You in a nice trouble, guys?
05:01Welcome home.
05:03You got here so early.
05:07Why goats?
05:08It's mostly because I get milk from the goats.
05:11I can make cheese out of their milk.
05:14You want more, huh?
05:15You want more, huh?
05:16Yeah.
05:17Goats, it's like a dog, you know?
05:20They have personality, you know?
05:21You get to know them.
05:22And it's cool to have some company around here.
05:27What I need to do now, and this is urgent,
05:30I've got to build bigger goat pen.
05:34It needs to be very goat-proof.
05:38They're very, very smart animals,
05:40so if there is a hole somewhere,
05:42they can get through and, you know, get away.
05:45Oh, what are you doing?
05:49Eh, eh, eh.
05:50Oh, man.
05:52Yeah, come on.
05:53Come on.
05:55There we go.
05:56So I need to build you a home,
05:58because this one doesn't work.
06:02I'm thinking to use willows,
06:04like an old traditional way of making fence.
06:08This is fast, and I'm sure there won't be too much gap,
06:13you know, in order to keep them inside the fence.
06:21Living up here takes a toll on you.
06:25Sometimes I just get lonely.
06:26This is the hardest part of living off-grid.
06:28But keeping busy helps a lot.
06:39Okay.
06:41Right here, okay,
06:42I don't want the goats to go underneath,
06:45so I need to do a fence of willows.
06:48Going to put the roof on the top,
06:50they'll be happy.
06:59I'm so glad I kept these logs.
07:01I cut them more than ten years ago,
07:03and I'm using it now.
07:06Living off-grid,
07:07you just have to hold on to everything you've got around.
07:10It's an asset, you know?
07:11You might need it one day.
07:16Now I'm starting, you know, the fence.
07:19Right now, the willows are flexible,
07:21because there is sap in it,
07:23but if I leave them an afternoon,
07:26even a day, too late.
07:28It will be so hard to bend them.
07:30They'll become brittle,
07:31because they'll be so dry.
07:37Twist it around.
07:38I'm making a nut out of it.
07:41And the thing is,
07:42when they dry,
07:43they last forever.
07:46Doesn't need any nails,
07:47no screws.
07:57The last one.
08:00Yeah, looks good.
08:01Very happy.
08:04Ah, it's holding very well.
08:07I don't think they're gonna jump over,
08:09and they won't get through it.
08:12Hey, hey, do you like that?
08:14Oh, yeah, they do like it.
08:17Next, I need to cut some trees to finish the fence.
08:21I just want the goats to get in as fast as possible.
08:24One of the most precious resources here is water.
08:39You need water to survive.
08:43Up until now, my water they use in the cabin for drinking,
08:45washing, bathing.
08:46All comes from the pond in buckets that I carry up by hand.
08:51So, I want to build a nice water well.
08:56There's water, dear, look.
08:57Oh, yeah.
08:58You're going across now, look.
08:59Yeah.
09:00Yeah.
09:01Look at that.
09:02You've just got the horn slack in your hand,
09:04and when you're dusting line, they'll start to go on their own.
09:06Don's the one that taught me how to do this.
09:09That first one Dad showed me, I didn't really believe it,
09:11but I'm telling you, look, they're moving on their own.
09:15I'd like to speak to a scientist and really understand
09:17what the hell's happening here with this,
09:19and who figured this out?
09:22The dividing rods really work.
09:23Once you actually put them in your hands, you can't deny it.
09:25They really do pull together and cross to try and pull into the water.
09:29Look, look.
09:30See that?
09:31Yeah.
09:32A little strong there, boy.
09:33There's a good lot of water there.
09:34Right here.
09:35That's where we dig.
09:45Make her easy now, Don, boy.
09:48Nice.
09:50Don's an old fellow I've known for a long time,
09:52and it's having a dream neighbor just down the trail from me.
09:57He's always there to give you a hand whenever you need it.
10:00First things first here, he's got to clear up all this brush,
10:03get to the dirt, and then he'll actually start digging the well.
10:06Yeah, Don's like the cool kid on the block up here
10:08with that little excavator.
10:09You know, he loves that little excavator,
10:11and he's really good at it, too.
10:15Well, Don's going to be busy with that hole for a while,
10:17so I'm going to work on the well liner,
10:18and it's maybe about $500 for a nice one,
10:20or you can go straight hillbilly like this,
10:23get a bunch of old barrels,
10:24and we're going to put them all together like a stovepipe.
10:26We're going to make our own homemade well liner
10:28that we'll put down in the hole,
10:29and it'll hold all the dirt outside of the hole
10:31and let the water sit inside.
10:39One of the things I love about this lifestyle is,
10:41if I can imagine it, I can create it.
10:43It's like being a kid all over again.
10:45What I'm seeing this way also, I'm thinking,
10:49like a little boy inside of me,
10:50it's a great hillbilly slide for the kids.
10:52Take a few of these barrels,
10:53make a nice little wooden frame,
10:55you can rig yourself by a little totally tubular
10:57in your backyard right here in the woods.
10:59It's the perfect backcountry well liner.
11:07That's some hole, man.
11:09You're doing good, Don.
11:12Oh, Don saved my ass on this one.
11:14Without him up here to help with the well
11:15and have the machine, wouldn't have done this.
11:18The toughest part of this whole thing
11:20was getting rid of all that brush on top,
11:22all those stumps, the big rocks,
11:23and now he's gone back for his afternoon siesta.
11:26He's trusting me now to do the digging.
11:30Part of me is super stuck.
11:31I'm like a little boy now
11:32getting to run the machine.
11:38I'd imagine it's kind of like digging a hole in the sand
11:40when you're a kid at the beach.
11:41And you dig deep enough and all of a sudden,
11:42water kind of starts seeping in
11:44and then the deeper you go, the faster it'll seep.
11:46So I think eventually, I'll just take a scoop out
11:48and there'll be a puddle of water
11:50and it'll just keep coming.
11:51But who knows?
11:53It's my first time, so.
11:59At this point, every scoop full,
12:00I'm just waiting to hit that spring.
12:06My God, we must be 20 feet down.
12:11She's looking damp down there.
12:21I see water.
12:24Not that I ever doubted that,
12:25but does the bunny rod work?
12:26There's water here.
12:33That's it.
12:36No, we're doing the reversal we just did all day.
12:38Put it all right back in the hole.
12:40Hey, Ron.
12:46What do you think?
12:48You like the well, Ronnie?
12:50Just napping and watching.
12:52The classic Ronnie, the construction foreman.
12:53Spring is fun because everything was so dead for so long.
13:06And now everything is starting to grow again.
13:08And there is so much stuff you can make.
13:09You can find a lot of supplies in the woods if you just know what's around you.
13:22I'm picking up some popular buds.
13:31I want to make a balm out of it.
13:34I need about 10 times this, and it should be good for a couple of jars.
13:42I use the balm for sores, aches, wounds.
13:46You can even rub it on your chest when you have some cough.
13:49So it's good for a lot of things.
13:54When I moved to Canada, I was in school for forestry and wildlife conservation.
13:59So it's where I learned about flora and the trees and plants we have in this area here.
14:05Anything in the bush can be useful.
14:07It makes you feel like you're more connected to the land.
14:12When I'm in this environment, my home is not only my cabin or my camp.
14:17It's bigger than that.
14:20My home is the Yukon.
14:21It's the Yukon.
14:34Well, I'm cutting some trees here so I can get the view.
14:38The cabin was kind of in this little dark hole.
14:40So opening here, I can see the mountains.
14:46I grew up in the mountains in the Alps in France, so I cannot live somewhere where there is no mountains, that's for sure.
14:52So if I can clear the view and get to see them every morning, it's pretty cool.
14:56And I'm going to use trees to mill boards and start building stuff.
15:02I'd like to build more furniture for inside because right now it's very basic.
15:13I want to make a proper kitchen counter to make it more livable in there.
15:17I don't want this place just to be a crappy little shack.
15:23So I want to have cool furniture and make it my own.
15:26To work your chenso has to be sharp, so sharpening it is a daily task.
15:42My tattoo represents the mountains that are behind my home in France where I grew up.
15:46So it's a nice reminder to remember where I come from.
15:56My face tattoo I got not a long time ago.
15:59Each line has a different meaning.
16:02The first line is mostly to remind me that even if I do things differently
16:07and if someone doesn't like it, it's fine and, you know, I own it.
16:10And the second one is to remember my own power that sometimes I tend to forget.
16:19And when this is fully accepted inside of me, I will draw a third line when I actually own it for real.
16:26Different times of the year we have different harvests.
16:32That's what I love about this place is like every season has something attributed to it.
16:36All right, let's wait for the geese to show off now.
16:37Let's get comfy.
16:38Right now in the spring it's geese, so this is when we harvest it for the year.
16:40When you're out hunting, it's a big fan of geese to be around the world.
16:43Love to get around the world and see if it's really my chest.
16:45It's growing up for the weather and the winter.
16:46I've got a lot of agnostic Padman here but I love to see if people can absorb the針 of the belleınçuş.
16:49Different times of the year we have different harvests.
16:51That's what I love about this place is like every season has something attributed to it.
16:53All right, let's uh…
16:56Wait for the geese to show off now.
16:58Let's get comfy.
17:01Right now, in the spring it's geese, so this is when we harvest it for the year.
17:06When you're out hunting, it's like the world.
17:07When you're out hunting, you never know if you're going to get something
17:10or if you're going to go home empty-handed.
17:13And that's one of the challenges of living off the land.
17:21Hey, look, there's a black dog over there taking s**t.
17:25But she's smart. She's pooping away from the blind.
17:29I think I'm going to try to train Piper when we're waiting for the geese.
17:32Hopefully we get real geese so she can smell them.
17:37Piper, sit. Sit. Good girl.
17:44Go get it.
17:47She becomes a retriever. That'll save a lot on your legs.
17:52Go get it.
17:53And save time.
17:55Good.
17:56Well, that's a start, eh?
17:58She'll get it. For sure a geese. She'll go after, like instinct.
18:03I think she'll prefer a real one.
18:04Yeah.
18:07Oh, geese s**t. There's geese.
18:15They're gone.
18:17Yeah.
18:20It's good. Now we're ready.
18:22So we're going to be on guard now.
18:24Hopefully there's going to be more of those.
18:29So come on, goose.
18:31Timber!
18:38Oh!
18:38Right on the fence.
18:58Oh, well, you held well.
19:00A three can fall on the goat pen, and the goat will be safe.
19:12This kind of fence is very well known here in Quebec.
19:15People have it around, you know, their fields and property.
19:20It's very common.
19:21I'll see how it goes.
19:27Maybe later on, you know, I'll have some more animals.
19:30Chicken are very easy, you know.
19:32They can have eggs.
19:34So a good omelet.
19:37Having animals, it brings company.
19:40It brings a lot of joy.
19:42You don't have the feeling of being alone.
19:51All right.
19:55This is done.
19:57Whoo.
19:58Very happy.
19:59This is great.
20:06I'm going to reuse this nail because I cannot make my own nails.
20:14Reusing the old rusty nails and some old boards is not a matter of being cheap.
20:20It's just a matter of survival here.
20:23This is a way of life.
20:27But when you use, you know, old wood, it's harder to make a straight building.
20:34The goats won't notice, though.
20:43Plywood is so rare here.
20:45I don't have it too much.
20:47But that was some leftover.
20:49So I'm just going to use it for the roof way faster.
20:53It's what I call doing the best I can for the sake of the goats.
21:02Oh, man.
21:03I feel the shade.
21:04It's very cool here.
21:06Voila.
21:07C'est fini.
21:08Next will be the fence.
21:09A little bit higher up.
21:10And the door.
21:11And after the goats, they're welcome here.
21:12That would be the new home.
21:13And after the goats, they're welcome here.
21:14That would be the new home.
21:15.
21:16.
21:17.
21:18.
21:19.
21:20.
21:21.
21:22I'm going to measure for my counter.
21:23I need two boards.
21:24Okay.
21:25Okay.
21:26building my own stuff as women.
21:27I'm going to measure for my counter.
21:28I need two boards.
21:29Okay.
21:30Building my own stuff as way more depth.
21:31Than just putting the wood.
21:32I'm going to measure for my counter.
21:33I need two boards.
21:35Okay.
21:36Building my own stuff as way more depth.
21:38Than just buying it in the store.
21:39When I build something, I make it from scratch.
21:40So there is a story to it.
21:41There is memories.
21:42There is sweat.
21:43It's more like a lot of work.
21:44I'm going to measure for my counter.
21:45I'm going to measure for my counter.
21:50I need two boards.
21:51Building my own stuff as way more depth.
21:53Than just buying it in the store.
21:58When I build something.
22:01I mean, I make it from scratch.
22:03So there is a story to it.
22:04There is memories.
22:05memories there is sweat it's more than just a thing it's my table here I have a
22:12very small amount of tools it's always a little more challenging so I just got
22:18to make the best out of what I got and if it's not perfect it's that's how it
22:23is
22:25this is the top of the log that I cut that's what I'm gonna use to put those
22:36two together I like using hand tools you don't need to go fast all the time it's
22:47uh it's nice to slow down sometimes and take your time but also because I don't
22:51have power so I don't have much of a choice I don't come here to work fast I
22:58love just living it like the old days it takes more time but it's more rewarding
23:04and I'm happy when I make something work with just a few tools I have it's it's
23:08cool well that's it that's the top of the counter not too wide not too narrow it's
23:20going to be nice I'm still learning but I'm confident in my skills I moved to Canada when
23:33I was 18 and I started from nothing so for sure it's it's a long process I'm kind of the black
23:42sheep of the family of course I live in a different world that them they live in town in France you
23:51know they go to work every day nine to five so sometimes it's just hard to to really explain what
23:57I'm doing but uh it's a getting better because they just accepted who I am now and they're happy
24:02that I found my path it does look almost like a counter being my own it's hard it's hard to do
24:15everything by yourself sometimes having someone would help it's just frustrating this easy task
24:34most of the time is just being a little takes more time this one is higher I guess this is upside down
24:44of course
25:04well's been here all night should be lots of water oh yeah that's two barrels up so that's a
25:18good four four and a half feet of water overnight when it works me that's that's a well up until now
25:24I've been drinking just straight at the pond so having a well is definitely a luxury first bucket the
25:31difference between the well water and lake water is that this well is actually come from the spring
25:36and it's purified through the earth through all the sand through all this gravel with no bacterias
25:40and mites and all that junk in it it's clean well water one day at work yesterday now we got a well
25:46for life just like that but digging the well and putting the liner in liquid it was really only the
25:53first step now we need to build a big water tower then we can pump out of this fill that and then
25:59gravity feed into the cabin into the kitchen sink I do love being out here and I love my time in the
26:07woods every minute of it but still I want to enjoy the basic comforts of life it's like you know just a
26:13little cold water run into the kitchen sink not too much to ask you know if you're living out here
26:18no one else is gonna do it for you you got to just be a get-up-and-goer that's a spring log look how easy
26:30that is it's a dream way easier than wintertime peeling it's definitely a real blessing having all
26:39the trees you want in your backyard it really is like a little lumber store out here and now these trees
26:45get the privilege of being the legs for my water tower for the next 60 years at least lucky trees
26:53you ask me oh final piece baby look at that reveal come out all the way to the end come out look that's
27:05spring right there baby you can't do that in fall I can't that anywhere that's spring that's a spring log
27:09saves me so much time and energy okay start building look how long these are I don't know I was planning
27:26on building the CN tower or what but my god we could use 12 inch logs perfect I almost think I measured that
27:37this will be the framework actually holds the water barrel up here it's a thousand liter barrel so it's
27:53going to be heavy this is a huge upgrade from Holland buckets water you really become water conscious real
28:01quick when every leaders hold up by hand there'll be enough water in this thing once it's full I'll
28:06be able to last probably six weeks two months and this will cover all my drinking water my water for
28:12washing dishes cooking bathing that's it that's our high-rise dance floor ready for the go-go dancers
28:25I mean come on right now we just got a flimsy platform up in the air every single brace we put
28:39on every nail we add we'll make it stiffer and stiffer until it's just one rigid piece that won't move
28:44I've heard of somewhere in life that comes a building structures triangles are good so making triangles
28:54look at that this thing is way bigger than I had imagined it's amazing really really really happy with it
29:08well looking at the goats the small one will be able to jump between these lights so what I'm gonna
29:32do I'm just gonna put some chicken wire from the bottom all the way here and that would be enough
29:37even the mother won't be able to jump over the fence I need chicken wire in order you know to keep
29:48them inside keep them safe we are in the wild there is coyotes there is even mountain lion here so I
29:59really don't want them to get hurt there we go whoo they're resting now it's good of course I need a gate you
30:14know to let them in and let them out so what I'm thinking is just maybe some board sliding down like this
30:24one last post here all right looks good to me they won't be able to to push it open so it's gold proof
30:46okay there is no gold that's gonna leave this place it's impossible yeah they're gonna love it oh
30:56man it's a nice beautiful bed you're gonna have beautiful gold pen are you ready to go in your new
31:03home there's yeah yeah yeah yeah I'm coming I'm coming I'm coming
31:14hurry pretty there we go this is your mommy and your new home
31:19water now
31:22what are you doing here you're not supposed to do that oh and you're just for the surprise
31:34you're that will need to be patched up no big deal there we go
31:44so you like it here do you like it here we're bigger right you've got room here
31:54you know just by looking at them I know they like it yeah they've got enough room they've got food
32:04they've got shade yahoo
32:11just jumping around
32:14it's cool you know to to have life here you know it feels it feels more like home because they're here with me
32:21well you're gonna have fun here but you've got to stay inside
32:26did you hear geese no the wind is this way we can hear something coming from a mile away
32:44spring hunt is really important for most indigenous communities everything stops and you focus on harvesting geese
32:53this is my double badger I find it's pretty good like you can have a 22 on top and you're 410
33:02and then you have two triggers you know if you don't get your goose with your 22
33:07then you could try with the 410 it's like you have two shots you know two tries
33:12the main reason why I got this one is my dad was telling me that my grandfather used to hunt with
33:19a double badger 410 22 when I showed this to my dad he said it looks pretty identical
33:26so I think to me it's my way of being closer to my grandfather
33:30he's coming
33:42we got one
33:44is there more?
33:46hey Gilbert what's that over there?
33:47I got . I shot it
33:48no! there's two Gilbert
33:51what?
33:52there's one right there just waiting for his friends
33:53for his friend, see it?
33:54Oh, okay, okay, okay.
33:56That's really fun.
33:57I hope we're gonna get a little bit.
34:10Did you get it?
34:11Yeah.
34:12I'll just have to go get it with the skinny.
34:13Okay.
34:14Good job, Gilbert.
34:20First time you kill something,
34:21you'll get the shaky knees.
34:23Even caribou, geese, it doesn't matter.
34:25You just have to respect that.
34:27And you know, these animals are not gonna go to waste.
34:32I don't enjoy killing geese.
34:34Personally, you know, I have a little bit
34:35of a hard time with every kill.
34:37I respect the animal, and at the end of the day,
34:39I remind myself that this is to feed our family.
34:44Got it!
34:46Yeah, it's big, eh?
34:47Yeah, it's very big.
34:49Like a turkey.
34:51Oh, yeah, man.
34:53So we're gonna use this as a decoy.
34:54We're just gonna add to what we have over there.
35:03Look, this is a goose.
35:04I just want Piper to smell the goose, just to get familiarized with the smell.
35:13This is her first time that she smells it raw.
35:15There was a lot of, like, high tension.
35:17You know, there's geese, you're stressed, you're trying to hurry up.
35:19And she stayed really calm the whole time, so that's good.
35:23And then, hopefully, one day, she'll be our goose retriever.
35:27We're lucky that we're getting two birds today.
35:35It'll get better as the days go by.
35:38We'll get more geese.
35:39We'll get more geese.
35:40We'll get more geese.
35:43Let's go.
35:46Crooked.
35:58I think it's just my pose that is all crooked.
36:07I can't get it straight.
36:11It can be frustrating sometimes working with logs.
36:14You have to be okay with things not being perfect and straight, but that's bush building.
36:22Okay, well, that's just how it's going to be.
36:25Nothing is really straight here anywhere.
36:29I'll just nail that down and done.
36:32All right.
36:46Looks pretty good.
36:48It's quite heavy, so it's going to be fun to bring inside.
36:52We'll see if it fits the door.
36:53Sweet.
37:12That's going to be the kitchen area, and there's a little shelf here, so it's going to be more storage.
37:17I might put a sink at some point, so it's easier to, you know, do dishes and stuff.
37:23Probably have another little counter here and a couple shelves up.
37:26Then it's going to look more like a real kitchen.
37:34It's awesome to be able to just harvest stuff you can find around here and, you know,
37:38make your own medicine, make your own little bombs.
37:43So I'm mixing olive oil with the balsam poplar buds
37:48that I'm going to let boil over the steaming water.
37:55I'm going to let it cook a little bit, and then I'm going to drain the buds.
37:59And I'm going to melt some beeswax and put everything together in the little tins.
38:08It smells very good.
38:11I do want to be self-sufficient.
38:13That's why I chose to live this way.
38:15And especially here, it's just you don't have the choice.
38:17You have to be self-sufficient.
38:20Well, I think it turned out pretty good.
38:23Just got to wait for it to cool down before closing the lids.
38:26A couple of hours later, you can use the bomb.
38:32The more you learn, it gives you confidence that you can make your life here.
38:36It's powerful.
38:51This here is the crown jewel of the whole project.
38:54This is what we did all that work, building that base, is to hold this big old behemoth.
38:59A thousand liters of crystal clear well water void, gravity feed, right to the faucets.
39:06The only real issue I see is just getting it up on the roof.
39:09I see what happens.
39:18It's going to flip.
39:19Flip.
39:19I need to reassess.
39:35I think the smart thing to do is take this ladder and move it up on the front patio.
39:38This patio is a lot higher than the ground here.
39:40It'll be a lot more gentle of a slope and be able to push it up easier, I think.
39:46There's lots of challenges living off-grid in the bush, especially alone.
39:50That's one of the real big draws of this lifestyle to me,
39:53is always being put up to challenges that you've never done before.
39:57Learning new things and just kind of figuring out on the floor.
40:00That's what makes me get up in the morning.
40:05Try this again.
40:14There it is, look at that.
40:38Looks so good.
40:39Okay.
40:45Feed this down.
40:47Bedroom is right below me.
40:48We'll go through the wall into the bedroom and then around to the kitchen.
40:56Ooh, look at that.
40:58All the way in.
41:02Water tanks right here.
41:03Now we're gonna make the turn here, go around the room.
41:06There's that wall right to the kitchen.
41:09Oh, look at that, come on.
41:20That's it, shell plumbed in, faucets are in.
41:23All's left to do now is get out the water pump, string the hose to the well, and fill the water
41:28tower, turn it on.
41:29Oh, wow, the sink looks so different all these years.
41:31I've been looking at the sink with no faucets there.
41:34Let's see it with faucets there.
41:37Trippy.
41:39Now we get down and fill the baby up.
41:45In the city, you take running water for granite.
41:48But here, there's a whole lot more to it.
41:52So we'll stick our suction hose down through the pump, run our line all the way up to the
41:57back to the water tower, start it off and let her buck.
42:11This is it.
42:12It's a big reveal.
42:19I hear air.
42:21Come on, baby.
42:21Don't let me down.
42:22We got flow, baby.
42:34Ooh, that's good water.
42:36That doesn't look like a whole hell of a lot around here.
42:38That's just something to brag about.
42:39It's nice and clear.
42:41Aria, the only thing left to do now, have a first test.
42:45This is the very first glass.
42:47Oh, yeah.
42:53Oh, yeah.
42:55Well, you know.
42:56By the way, myrets will take care of.
42:59Thanks.
43:00Oh, yeah.
43:01Thanks.
43:04Thanks.
43:05Thanks.
43:06Thanks.
43:07I'll let you know what my biography then is here.
43:09Thanks.
43:09Thanks.
43:10Thanks.
43:11Thanks.
43:11Thanks.
43:11Thanks.
43:13Thanks.
43:13Thanks.
43:14Thanks.
43:16Thanks.
43:17Thanks.
43:18For the help.
